Go for the latter.

Federal government work is the best, anytime any day insurance cover you. And your retirement benefits, your pension and all.

If you need freedom to run your personal business, the Govt job will do.

It all boils down to what fits into your long term plans.

My dear, it's incomparable. Take the government job. Most private jobs honestly have nothing to offer. They will use you, stress you and who knows if you have a mean employer, they may even be cutting your salary for flimsy reasons. I could working in a place and the salary was around 80k, but at the end of the month, thank your stars if you get up to 50-60k because they would have cut it for very flimsy reasons. We even used to work on Saturdays and even some public holidays. Unless it's a proven multinational, and they will even pay you much better. The way government jobs are structured, that 40k might just be your basic salary. They pay some allowances heer and there (depending on the ministry and parastatal) and you are sure you own your time. My dear there is barely any difference between 40k and 70k (don't let what's' in-between fool you). With the 70k, i assure you that you will do work of 200k in the private sector

I've worked in private sector and can confirm that Nigeria private sector jobs are terrible. For that 70k a private sector company will take 140k worth of work out of you. Most of the times, even though official timings were 9 to 5 Monday to Saturday, I rarely left my office at 5 and most of the days left around 7pm and sometimes even worked on Sundays.
Now I'm in govt job, I arrive at office at 9am and leave at 5pm without any problem.

In private job I was happy with salary initially for 2 -3 months but after that I realised few things:

1. I was getting fat because of only 5 hour sleep and drinking sugary coffee to keep myself awake in office

2. My private job was making me work 2–3 times more than normal and only paying 70k

3. No time with family and the little time I got was used by me to sleep and recover physically than interact with family

4. Since all Saturdays were working I had no time to visit bank or to do any household chores as on Sunday also I needed to take rest and could hardly move a muscle.

5. Everyday I used to curse my job but still had to work and give 100 percent otherwise I would get in the bad books of boss.

6. After 1 year of struggle the private job increased my salary by 5k, and my salary became 75k. But that hardly satisfied me as I realized expectations from me had increased even more. That meant I was given even more work than I could take.

7. Now I'm in govt job which pays me 60k a month plus benefits. And I'm happier. More respect for work done. The public gives a heartfelt thank you when I do work for them. I feel I'm contributing to the nation. I spend more time with family.

Once you have worked in Pvt and govt sector you will realise that govt sector pays more for per hours work done than Pvt Sector.

I know we all are too busy focusing on the cons of a private job. While at it, also consider the possibility of being transferred to Kano or Maiduguri at your government job without any relocation plan for you and your family.

Government job is not an old people's home where people go to sleep and relax. That LASTMA guy you see on the road, under the sun is a government worker too. People go through stress. Government job is sweet bla bla bla until they post you to Kano from Lagos without an idea who did the posting and zero relocation plan for you and your family

Na that time you will know the difference between Abuja connect and your HR office in your private job.

If you're married, government job is ur best bet...

If you're single and have a hustler mind, go for the latter... Cos as a single guy or girl, wetin u dey use ur time do if not to work and gather money?

The 30k difference is something to consider as a single individual... Just ignore the stress.

However, being self-employed is way better than both...

Unless you are using the free govt time to do your personal dealings and taking in �. In my opinion stick to the private job, learn few skills port to the next higher paying private job.

Don't grow old and weight for pension that one "idiot" will steal. Its better to enjoy when your taste buds � are still functional than when you can't separate fish � from chicken�.

Though this look like a cooked up story on NairaLand as usual but I will not leave with sharing my experience....

After my NYSC, I got an appointment in the banking sector with a relatively good salary but I work for the money...the banking job is so stressful and time consuming...
Along the line, I got a Federal govt job, though the salary was poor I have time to do so many things....luckily for me, I was posted to one juicy office, I built two bedroom flat within a year with my poor salary....the money I was making daily was double of my salary...

So, my advice for the young graduate is that they should always commit their ways to gods hands and he will direct their paths...

Private job isn't even something to consider, the labor laws in Nigeria is useless. Slavery still exists and i know that for sire working with private companies is slavery.

I was on probation for 3months before i was handed the employment letter to sign, of which even by they i was already drianed, i got sick every 2weeks me that hardly get sick at all. I left the office sometimes 9pm, i thats supposed to close by 5:30pm.

Y'all need to see the slavery letter the man wanted me to sign, looking at the rules alone scared d shit out of me. U can't do anything else, u can be fired without pay, u can be fired without cause, u will only get an increase after 5years, u will work 2months without pay incase u will have to leave, etc. that was slavery and all the works were being done by me alone. I instantly tendered the keys and ran away b4 i die b4 my time.

Am very sorry to say this, but they need to give you an award for the dumbest Nigerian alife for asking such a question, everybody knows that govt job comes with security and pension but private job dont have such. My friend once had a job were he was being paid 200k monthly but got dropped after a year in the private company. Please grab the govt job with both hands, forget about the small salary now, but trust me you will smile later. BUT PLEASE I HOPE THE GOVT JOB IS NOT NPOWER? I think most of us here are confusing Private Jobs for a One man Company.
Private Jobs include Jobs in Multinationals such as Shell, Chevron, Total e.t.c as well as Local companies like Glo, Oando, Nestoil e.t.c
Government Jobs range from Local Government secretariat jobs to Jobs in the likes of NNPC, NIMASA or DPR.
Every job should be treated on a case by case basis.
Ask yourself pertinent questions like, how much career improvement does your job give you; Private or Government.
I Worked in a Government Ministry many years ago during my NYSC. There were talks of retaining me, but i refused. I was seen as a Star for the little contribution is made. That alone would have made me remain mediocre and not develop myself. I understood i wanted more, so i left. I do not regret my decision one bit. However, if i was offered a job back then in NNPC for instance, i would have grabbed it wholeheartedly.
So, each job should be weighed based on the prevailing circumstance

Why should funds meant for the provision of resources to the entire public go to pay for "workers" who want to simply sit around doing nothing, collecting bribes and running "side hustles"?

Nigeria's state and federal payrolls could be slashed by 90% with no visible difference in outcomes - the country needs radical privatization and deregulation, so all you lazy grifters wanting to do nothing on the public teat are forced to earn your living by providing goods and services people actually need or want. Children are going hungry, pregnant women are dying in childbirth, the sick are going without hospitals, and everybody is going without clean water and decent roads, just to subsidize the parasitical existence of all you government "workers" who think the world owes you an effortless living.

Here is the logic using 5 years and additional qualifications.

Stay in that private for 5 years because of 30k difference but the thing is you might still be receiving that 70k in the next 5yrs in prvt company even if you acquire additional qualifications.

But if you pick the govt job, in 5 years time you will have get promotion and earn better than 70k if you have additional qualifications.

I will rather earn 40k in govt than 70k in private because govt will come with health insurance, pension remittance, and more other benefits, unlike private that will even deduct pension from your pay without remitting it. Not to talk about job security.
