TODAY MARKS A TRAGIC ANNIVERSARY





The pretty woman whose picture appears above was Aasiya Zubair, also known as Aasiya Hassan. She was born on June17, 1972 and she was murdered on February 12, 2009, exactly nine years ago. She was just 36 years old.


Aasiya was the founder and owner of New York based Bridges TV Network, the first American Muslim English-language television network. Aasiya founded Bridges TV to challenge negative perceptions of Muslims in America. She resigned from her lucrative job as an Architect to fulfill her dreams of creating better relationships between muslims and mainstream America.

On this day (February 12) in the year 2009, Aasiya’s dead body was found beheaded, at the Bridges TV station after her estranged husband, Muzzamill Hassan,turned himself in to a police station and was charged with her murder.

Muzzamill Hassan had lured Aasiya to the television studio where they worked together, on February 12, 2009. He attacked her with two hunting knives, stabbing her forty times; he then proceeded to cut out her eyes, and finally he beheaded her.

During his trial, Hassan alleged that his wife had allowed her popularity as the founder of the first Muslim television station in America to fill her with pride and she was refusing to behave like an obedient muslim wife. He claimed that he had tried all the methods prescribed by the Quran including scolding and beating Aasiya, but all had been in vain. He later discovered that Aasiya had filed for divorce against him on grounds of domestic violence and he decided that he had to kill her in order to avoid the personal embarrassment it would have caused him in the muslim community as a man who was divorced by his wife.

Muzaamill Hassan was found guilty of second degree murder and sentenced to life imprisonment which he is presently serving at the Clinton Correctional Facility in Dannemora, New York.
