A man infected with the novel coronavirus who went to a Filipino pub earlier this month saying he wanted to “spread the virus” died Wednesday at a hospital in central Japan, investigative sources said.

After testing positive with the pneumonia-causing virus on March 4, the 57-year-old man from Gamagori, Aichi Prefecture, went to the pub in the city that evening despite a request by health officials to stay at home. The local authorities said they did not have power to prohibit him from going out.

Police launched an investigation into the man, whose identity has not been released, last Friday after a woman in her 30s working at the pub tested positive for the virus that causes COVID-19. The woman’s nationality has not been disclosed.

The police had planned to question him on suspicion of obstruction of business after he left the hospital, to which he was itted March 5.

The man stayed at the pub for about 40 minutes after spending 15 minutes at an izakaya Japanese-style drinking establishment, according to Gamagori city officials.

At the Filipino pub, the man sang karaoke and put his arm around a female employee who was serving him, a source knowledgeable of the situation said.

Although the female employee tested negative for the virus, another female worker developed a fever March 8 and later tested positive, Toyota municipal officials said last Thursday. The woman lives with her family in the city.

Both the izakaya and the Filipino pub temporarily suspended business from March 4, with the pub manager filing a damage report to authorities last Friday.

The man had tested positive for the virus a day after his parents, with whom he lived, were found to be infected. He had serious pre-existing conditions, sources close to the matter said.

Before going out by taxi March 4, the man told his parents he wanted to “spread the virus,” according to the Gamagori municipal officials.

Aichi Prefecture currently has the second highest number of domestic COVID-19 infections at about 120, after Hokkaido, where some 150 cases have been confirmed.

Japan has so far found 13 clusters of people infected with the pneumonia-causing virus, according to the health ministry, including one at a day-care center for the elderly in the central Japan prefecture.

In a separate incident, police Monday arrested a man in Kiryu, Gunma Prefecture, on suspicion of obstructing business after he told engers on a train he was infected with coronavirus, causing the operator to suspend the line for around one hour.

The 54-year-old man, Kiyoshi Kogure, was confirmed not to have been infected with the virus and was drunk at the time of the incident, according to the police.

Last Friday, a 44-year-old man in Shimane Prefecture was arrested after he pretended to have contracted the novel coronavirus and also threatened to spread it at a local train station.

China's government researchers say they have found the Japanese-developed anti-flu drug Avigan effective in treating patients infected with the new coronavirus and will promote its use.

Zhang Xinmin, director of the National Center for Biotechnology Development, named the drug at a news conference in Beijing on Tuesday.

He said the drug was found to be effective in clinical trials by two medical organizations in the country. He said the medicine worked for coronavirus-related symptoms including pneumonia and had no obvious side effects.

The director said the tests were conducted in the cities of Wuhan and Shenzhen and involved 240 patients and 80 patients respectively.

He said those who were given the medicine in Shenzhen turned negative for the virus after a median of four days after becoming positive, while it took a median of 11 days for those without the drug.

The trial also found that X-ray photos confirmed improvements in lung conditions in about 91 percent of the patients who were given the medicine. The number stood at 62 percent for those without the drug.

The director said the drug is highly safe and its effect is obvious, and formally recommend the use of the medicine as a way to tackle the virus.

A Chinese firm that has licensed the drug from its Japanese developers got government approval last month to mass-produce the medication.

China on Monday confirmed 21 new cases of the virus infections, bringing the total in the country to more than 80,000. It's death toll now stands at 3,226.

Chad is repaying Angola a debt of $100m (£82m) with cattle, Angola's state-run newspaper has reported.

The unusual agreement is seen as creating a win-win situation for both nations - Chad is short of cash while Angola needs cattle.

More than 1,000 cows arrived by ship in Angola's capital, Luanda, as the first payment, Jornal de Angola reported.

In total, Angola would receive 75,000 cattle over 10 years, meaning it has accepted payment of $1,333 per animal.

Chad would send a further 3,500 head of cattle later this month, the report added.

The scheduled hearing in the appeal by the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Adams Oshiomhole has been put off by the Court of Appeal, Abuja.

The court had, last week sent notices of hearing to parties in the appeal. But, when parties got to court today, a of three Justices led by Justice Stephen Adah sat to hear other cases.

The later rose, with a promise that another will be reconstituted to hear Oshiomole’s appeal.

Parties were however, taken aback when, rather than having a new , a female official of the court announced to a packed courtroom that the court has elected to hear Oshiomole’s appeal on a later date to be communicated to parties later.

Oshiomhole and his ers, who have been in court since a little over 8 am, are currently meeting with their team of lawyers on what next steps to take.

As he exited the courtroom, with his ers behind, Oshiomhole told journalists that he would await the court’s decision in the case.

Oshiomhole’s appeal is against an earlier judgment of the High Court of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT) which among others, restrained him acting as the National Chairman of the APC.

quote author=Geeoriginal post=87453714] Ekiti was never under Oyo empire. The attempt to extend the empire to part of Ekiti was what led to Ekiti parapo war, with Ibadan soldiers fighting against the Ekiti army led by Ogedemgbe agbogungboro and Fabunmi.
In the real sense, Alaafin was not a bigger king than other kings that are direct descendants of Oduduwa. Alaafin became rich and powerful at a point and overcame some Yoruba towns where such towns were made to pay "isakole" to Oyo. At no point was he able to get the whole of Yoruba under him.
I initially thought the Alaafin's letter was fake, where he was describing some obas as subordinate. The present chairman of Ekiti traditional rulers council has better claim to Oduduwa than some of the 16 obas in question.
Unfortunately, the 16 Obas are the making of the colonialist and making our traditions as subjects of colonialism decision is belittling.
The Alaafin ought to have come in to settle issues by talking to everyone involved instead of a letter with tone of a command to people that are not his subjects.
Nobody wrote any position in stone, the first class obas in Ekiti by my understanding are 22 in numbers and they are sovereign in each of their domain.

My brother you lacked the basic knowledge of Yoruba history and for your information the Sixteen years Ekiti-Parapo War
(1877-1893) which ended all wars in Yorubaland and coincided with the establishment of British Colonial Rule
in the hinterland of Yoruba country. I am bold to say that If British had not intervened in the war Ibadan armies would have won the war though it may drag on further. Ibadan was in total control of all the ekiti/ondo areas towns prior to that war and it is the overzealous of Ibadan representatives in those towns that actually caused the war.

A senior US government official has summoned China's ambassador following online comments by a Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson that suggested the US military might have brought the new coronavirus to China.

Zhao Lijian wrote on Twitter on Thursday that it might be the US army who brought the epidemic to Wuhan.

Assistant Secretary of State for the Bureau of East Asian and Pacific Affairs David Stilwell summoned Cui Tiankai to the State Department on Friday to lodge a protest.

A State Department official told NHK that Assistant Secretary Stilwell gave a very stern representation of the facts to the Chinese ambassador and the ambassador was very defensive.

The official added, "Spreading conspiracy theories is dangerous and ridiculous. We wanted to put the government on notice we won't tolerate it for the good of the Chinese people and the world."
