Ahead of the next conference on Climate Change scheduled for Egypt, Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, is advocating climate justice for Africa, noting that a just transition would mean more energy and must include ending global energy poverty.

Prof. Osinbajo stated this at a virtual event on climate finance themed “Climate Finance and a Just, Equitable Energy Transition for Africa”, organized by The Atlantic Council.

The Atlantic Council is a nonpartisan organization that galvanizes US leadership and engagement in the world, in partnership with allies and partners, to shape solutions to global challenges.

According to Prof. Osinbajo, “we are already seeing the investment rules limit the technology choices of African countries in ways that do not apply to wealthy nations. Applying a set of standards to Africa that you can’t apply in your own country is the opposite of climate justice.”

Continuing, the VP said “if the global energy transition is going to become reality, if we are truly, in this climate crisis together, then the priorities of African nations cannot be sidelined. Climate justice must include far greater for countries with the greatest needs and who contribute the least to global emissions.

“It must include investments, not only to mitigate carbon emissions but also to ensure that developing countries can adapt to the impacts of climate change caused by the rich polluting nations. Climate justice must include ending energy poverty. Anything else would be the opposite of justice.”

Speaking to the issue of a just and equitable transition for Africa and others, the VP said “what is a just transition for countries with no coal and deep energy poverty? A Just Energy Transition means something very different for every other African country, including my own country, Nigeria. For us, a Just Transition means a lot more energy, not less.”

He noted that “climate justice must include ending global energy poverty. Every person on the planet deserves to have modern energy. Every person deserves a job. All modern economies require abundant affordable and reliable energy.

“And with the impacts of climate change bearing down on us, every nation must have enough energy to build resilient infrastructure, deliver essential public services, and provide the cooling and air conditioning to withstand a warming planet. I’ll say this again: climate justice must include ending energy poverty.”

On expectations at the forthcoming Conference of Parties, tagged COP27, in Egypt later in the year, Prof. Osinbajo said “every nation must play its part in solving the dual crises of global poverty and climate change.”

His words: “Africa must be committed to solving both of these emergencies because both poverty and a warming planet affect us more than any other region. We are absolutely clear that Africa must be proactive, we must be assertive of our needs, and we must do a better job of making our views heard. That is what to expect in Egypt.”

On Nigeria, the Vice President noted that the country remains committed to the net zero emission by 2060 but would require the and partnership of other stakeholders.

“Nigeria will require huge investments in new infrastructure. We’re going to build more roads, ports, industrial parks, and especially power systems. For every Nigerian to consume the Modern Energy Minimum of 1,000 kilowatt hours per year by 2050 would require a 15-fold increase in our national power generation.

“To ensure every household has access to cleaner cooking will require access to LPG, biogas and electric cooking for the tens of millions of families still cooking with wood and charcoal.”

He also explained that “an immediate priority is to create 20 million jobs and rebuild our industries. We must add more than 200 gigawatts of new power capacity, principally utility scale solar by 2060.

“We will need to upgrade our power infrastructure, especially for transmission and distribution, using a strategic mix of grid and mini grid systems. To be successful we will need partners.

“The majority of investment in our energy transition will come from our own national resources. But we estimate we need an additional $410 billion above business-as-usual investment to meet our goals.”

Another point raised at the meeting by Prof. Osinbajo was the use of alternative technologies. He stressed that “every country must find its own path to a low carbon future. The EU decision to label both gas and nuclear as green energy is a clear recognition that Europe knows that countries need a wide range of options.

“The United States too has a long-term plan that includes an array of different technologies that meet the needs of diverse communities across the country. Africa too will find its own path. Africa too will use an array of technologies that meet the needs of diverse countries across the continent.”

The VP expressed optimism that Africa will get it right at COP27, noting that “Egypt will be a crucial moment for African leaders to explain their common position and for Western leaders to show they are hearing us and living up to their commitments and responsibilities.

“Egypt can be a turning point for fighting climate change and for ending global poverty. The win-win is there for the world to grasp. We can succeed. But only if the needs of developing countries are heard.”

The Climate Finance virtual event is one of the preludes to the COP27 event scheduled to hold in Egypt later in the year to further galvanize efforts towards a just transition.

Nigeria’s Senate President, Ahmad Lawan, has assured of the party’s victory at the 2023 polls, as he led the National Assembly caucus of the All Progressives Congress (APC), to meet with Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, SAN, at his official resident, Aguda House, in Aso Rock Villa, Abuja.

The Tuesday night meeting was the breaking of Ramadan fast session hosted by Vice President Osinbajo for the Senate caucus of the 9th Assembly.

Lawan, who addressed the media at the State House, said the Senate is working hard to ensure the party retains power in 2023, while he said his team of Senators wished the Vice President well in his presidential aspirations, after he briefed the Senate APC caucus about his intention to run for the office of the President in 2023.

VP Osinbajo, had, in a video posted online on Monday, declared his intention to run in the 2023 presidential election.

“We had dinner with the Vice President to break the fast and thereafter, we had a brief interaction on our government and the Vice President’s declaration to run for the president’s office.

“Naturally, the Vice President told us he had expressed his interest and that he needed to consult with the Senate APC caucus.

“He wanted us to hear from his mouth and that we did; and he was seeking our in whatever way we can at the appropriate time; and we wished the vice-president good luck in this endeavour.

“Let me assure everyone that the Senate APC caucus and indeed, the National Assembly caucus of the APC will continue to work very hard for our great party the APC, to continue to provide services to Nigerians.

“We shall also work hard to ensure that by 2023, the next istration is an APC istration at the federal and states levels by the Grace of God,’’ Lawan said.

The Leader of INRI Evangelical Spiritual Church, Primate Elijah Ayodele, has dismissed claims that Vice President Yemi Osinbajo betrayed Bola Tinubu, National Leader of the All Progressives Congress, APC, by declaring for the Presidency.
Since Osinbajo declared his intention, individuals and groups from Tinubu’s camp have been describing the Vice President as a betrayal for making such a declaration knowing fully well that his political leader has the same ambition.

However, Primate Ayodele said Tinubu is only experiencing nemesis due to some of the sins he has committed in the past.

He said if Tinubu isn’t careful, a local, state and federal politician will betray him and he may lose Lagos State.

In a statement signed by his Media Aide, Oluwatosin Osho, the clergyman said Tinubu had made people cry, hence will suffer for it.

He said: ‘’Don’t blame Yemi Osinbajo for Tinubu’s political crisis, he has not realized it, he will later, they will keep him off the track completely. Tinubu is facing all of these because he also betrayed some people, the law of Karma is simply playing out. Osinbajo never betrayed Tinubu, He has done worse than these to people so I wonder what brought about the wailings.

’Tinubu has made people cry, he is just facing the same ordeal he put people through but unfortunately, instead of asking him to retrace his steps, his followers are deceiving him. God has given him Lagos but if he isn’t careful, he will lose the state and that will be worse.

’He has not seen anything, he better not put too much strength on the presidency rather he should return to Lagos if not, they will still betray him in Lagos. A local politician, state politician and federal politician will betray him, this is nemesis fighting Tinubu and it’s only God that can cancel it, he has not seen anything yet.’’

HOTPEN – To start with, I attended St. Thomas’ Secondary School, Kano. From the name, you can guess the owners, s, sponsors, and managers of the school.

But perhaps, just like me, you aren’t good at guessing. Fine! St. Thomas’ Secondary School is a Catholic missionary high school that has been in existence in Kano state since 1959. To date apart from Mrs. Hannalore Olufemi a German who was married to a Yoruba all former and current principals are Reverend Fathers. Do you know who Rev. Fr’s. are and what they do? Google. 60% of St. Thomas’ students are Christians with a major percentage of that 60% as mission boys and seminarians groomed to be Reverend Fathers and Priests respectively.

Every Friday, a school assembly was held and at the beginning, Christians & Muslims are given the chance to open with prayers. Sometimes when there is any religious event, the Christians converge at the church while we (muslims) assemble in the school hall where Islamic lectures and quranic recitations were done.

I know you may be wondering why a Kano indigene would attend such school despite having numerous options. Here is why – just after my primary school, my father went to the Kano ministry of education in the quest for the best secondary school in Kano and they referred him to St. Thomas’ they were right as St. Thomas was and remains the best school to beat in Kano state in of discipline academically and morally plus zero tolerance to examination malpractice of whatever form.

The school gate closes at 7:20 am and classes start at exactly 7:30 am. To the best of knowledge, I was never late all thanks to Baba. That is how disciplined St. Thomas was and still is. Despite being dominated by Christians, none of us (muslims) was ever cajoled directly or indirectly to denounce our faith and neither was any of us stopped from praying during zuhr prayers held at 1:45 pm at the school mosque seen at the entrance of the school.

So, please, if as young and naive as we were coupled with insufficient knowledge of Islam, and faith then as compared to now no one ever attempted to Christianize us despite the oratory skills of reverend fathers, how can Pastor Yemi Osinbajo dare attempt to Christianize Nigerians who are of sane ages and strong faith of whatever religion they practice including ‘atheism’.

As a student, I wasn’t the best academically as I suffered some setbacks, especially in JSS2. After school resumed, our then Principal Rev. Fr. Joseph Salihu asked me to see him in a camera (I had to ask for the meaning). I met him in his office. I was extremely frightened but his approach calmed my nerves. ‘Are you Dantiye’ he asked and I nodded in the affirmative.

He proceeded “I have seen your results and you must understand that we want the best for you or dont you want the best for yourself” he interrogated. I giggled and replied “I do, Fr. ” “Great, you can go back to your class, good luck!” he said. I replied ‘Thank you so much” and I left. At that moment, Fr. Salihu could have taken advantage of my vulnerability and preached whatever he wanted just so to make me reconsider my faith thereafter he may wish to help augment my marks. He didn’t, instead, those were his words. Full of wisdom, encouraging & motivating.

Today, I hold an MBA in Finance which I completed at the age of twenty-four and am the Chief Responsibility Officer of an Legal-Tech Company in Lagos. A privilege even the most brilliant can not brag of at the moment. God is wonderful.

Another unpleasant yet lesson-full experience in St. Thomas’ was when I once scaled the fence (St. Louis primary school fence) which was the demarcation between it and St. Thomas and that was on a Thursday afternoon. The next morning I was welcomed with the news “Dantiye jiya Father Habila yazoo Neman ka” – Dantiye – Father Habila came looking for you yesterday. Do I need to tell you how I felt in my heart, and stomach including my kidneys? Oops, Father Habila was our then Principal his full name is Rev. Fr. Habila Musa whom I had a personal relationship as he has ‘invited’ me to his office on different occasions just to give me some pep talks.

His words were always “Your Father is a good man, he is so ionate about your education. Please be the person he wants you to become. I know you can do it” during such talks, nothing about Christianity not even a slip of tongue talkless of trying to sell the idea to me. Is it Osinbajo that you think can sell RCCG to Muslims/northerners?

Now back to the ‘fence-scaling’ story. A few hours later I sighted him heading to our class. Nowhere was to hide, no lie to tell, nothing to do. I decided to face my fears. He came straight to my seat – ‘Dantiye, where did you go to on Thursday’ he asked with his husky voice. Imagine my face and eyes.

I replied “Home,” he asked how and why. I implausibly explained. He gave me that look and added ” Go and wait for me in my office” While at his office he asked for my Father’s number to report me, I tried apologizing but he insisted. I obliged. In my mind, I was wondering why he was asking me for a phone number that I believe he had hitherto as he was in with Baba from time to time. I dont know what made him change his mind but I was neither punished nor reported. Perhaps because I told him the truth. Maybe because he was trying to give me benefit of the doubt or probably the “Suratul Yaseen” I recited all through that trying moment. I learned one major lesson – honesty.

Whatever the situation, try and say the truth. It shall always set you free. It did set me free. I know I am not as honest as I am supposed to be, but certainly, I am not a habitual liar. I am only human.

If you are still pondering how these experiences are related to Pastor Yemi Osinbajo’s presidency, and how he is perceived to Christianize Nigeria, think of how St. Thomas’ Secondary School never recorded a case of Christianizing any of its students. Mind you, today, St. Thomas’ is 63 years and still being run by the Catholics.

Let me conclude with an excerpt from the Lord’s prayer “And Forgive Us Our Treses As We Forgave Those Who Tres Against Us, And Lead Us Not Into Temptation, But Deliver Us From Evil.

I welcome Prof. Yemi Osinbajo SAN, GCON as one of the Presidential candidates and my candidate.
PY0 2023!
