Gutter journalism! Pointblank to the pit!

Following the publication of a patently false story against her by POINTBLANK NEWS, an online news medium, the Coordinating Minister for the Economy and Minister of Finance, Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala has sued the medium for N10 billion.

The minister is claiming the amount against POINTBLANK NEWS COMMUNICATIONS INC. and its directors – Jackson Ude and Churchill Umoren – as general damages for libel and the same amount as exemplary and aggravated damages for libel.

The suit is with regard to a news story titled “Okonjo-Iweala buys N1.2 billion Abuja mansion!”published on January 10, 2012 which, among other false claims, alleged that the Minister purchased the “mansion” from Chief Fabian Nworah, owner of EFAB Properties Ltd in November 2011.

In response to a rebuttal issued by the minister’s office, POINTBLANK NEWS responded that it had “overwhelming evidence to prove that she owns the mansion but if she insists we are wrong she knows where to seek redress”.

Chief Nworah issued a statement in which he denied that he or his company sold the alleged property – No 3 Nworah Street, Off Gana Street, Maitama, Abuja – or any other property to Dr Okonjo-Iweala. He added for emphasis that the property described in the story was in fact still available for purchase at the time the story was published.

In the statement signed by Chief Nworah: “It is a fact that we have properties for sale but nonehas been sold as at today – January 11, 2012. We are still looking for buyers and we want to say categorically that we did not sell any of the houses to Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala.”

In confirmation that its intent was malicious rather than professional, POINTBLANK NEWS refused to retract its story and in fact continued to prominently display the egregious falsehood on its website, in defiance of all standards of professionalism and decency.

India to push for ‘ own’ World Bank boss

INDIA could field a candidate for the post of World Bank president with a formidable push from the emerging global power centre, BRICS. The term of American Robert Zoellick, the current and eleventh president of the World Bank, will end in June. India could push for a candidate from the developing world, preferably Nigerian finance minister Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, and get it endorsed during the March 28- 29 summit of the BRICS nations — comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

Speculations were rife and some initial discussions were held within the government.India and China will hold a preparatory meeting for the BRICS summit on Thursday where the organisation’s stand on the global economic crisis, the Eurozone trouble and IMF reforms were expected to figure.China’s foreign minister Yang Jiechi arrived in New Delhi on Wednesday for the discussions.

Ngozi Okonjo- Iweala, sources said, was qualified for the World Bank top job as she was its managing director between 2007 and 2011.
Earlier, a global alliance of 57 organisations floated the name of rural development minister Jairam Ramesh to succeed Zoellick.

Former Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and Turkey’s former finance minister Kemal Dervis are among the nine on the list along with Ramesh.
However, US President Barack Obama was likely to name Zoellick’s successor, continuing with the tradition of an American heading the World Bank and a European getting the top job at the International Monetary Fund ( IMF).

’s Christine Lagarde faced a contest to succeed Dominique Strauss- Kahn at the IMF in 2011. Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia was in the fray, but his age did not allow him the opportunity.

She wil definitely run down world financial system, a person dt cannot explain what has happened in her place of work for past 6 years(a presenter on AIT asked Iweala during subsidy removal?s saga dt what has d fed govt done with money saved 4rm diesel's subsidy removal, Okonjo replied dt she knew nothing about dt) & besides she is a silent politician & Jeffry Sach has finished d talk dt World Bank needs neither politician nor Wall Street Banker. 4 dis reasons she is not fit 4 dt post, i reserve my comments!

Dr. Iweala is able and qualified to hold that position as the head of the World Bank. She has the expertise and wealth of experience. She is a world renowned economist!

991:

this roly-poly woman is a total failure back home, just another soft-witted political instrument with dozens of advisers, unable to think anything out of her brain for the good of her country.

You don't understand how economics works. That is the reason you could open your ignorance.

[b][b][b][b]TOWARDS TRANSPARENCY IN THE FUEL SUBSIDY PAYMENTS

To ensure effective channeling and transparent management of subsidy resources, the Federal Government has mandated PPPRA to change the modalities of the subsidy regime.

The new regime will focus on transparent selection of genuine marketers with proven track records and capacity, and those whose operations can be easily monitored.
Best.
