The Federal Government has said it would no longer succumb to any form of blackmail and intimidation that will make it enter into agreement with unions that will be difficult to implement. The government’s position is coming on the heels of the face-off between it and the four university based unions that culminated in a strike which has lingered for about six months. Recall that the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, had commenced a month warning strike on February 14, 2022, over the alleged inability of the federal government to attend to some of the concerns it raised and had continuously been rolling over the strike after its expiration. The three non-teaching staff unions, the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities, SSANU, the Non-Academic Staff Union of Allied and Educational Institutions, NASU and the National Association of Academic Technologists, NAAT, also proceeded on strike a few weeks after ASUU downed tools. Some of the contentious issues yet to be resolved between the federal government and the unions include the non-release of the revitalization fund, non-payment of earned allowance, and renegotiation of the 2009 Agreement, among others. To resolve the ime, the government set up the Professor Nimi Briggs Renegotiation Committee to interface with the four unions. However, Vanguard was told that the Federal Government has vowed not to enter any agreement that would be unimplementable. Multiple sources at the Ministry of Finance, National Income, Salaries and Wages Commission as well as the ant General Office of the Federation told Vanguard that the government wanted to be careful in order not to sign an agreement that will be difficult to implement. One of the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, said: “The Federal Government will no longer be blackmailed to sign any agreement that will be unimplementable. “Before we put pen on paper, all the necessary government advisory team, including the Ministry of Finance, the Budget Office, the Office of the ant-General of the Federation and the National Income, Salaries and Wages Commission, will sit together and take a decision that would not lead to another crisis. continue Reading: https://mgissioninfo.com.ng/blogpost/ASUU-and-fg-issues/

There was a team of security officials, including men of the Nigeria Police Force, at the main gate of the University of Lagos, Akoka, following a planned protest by a group of students over the lingering strike action of the Academic Staff Union of Universities. Student groups had earlier declared mass protests across the country for Tuesday. The locations announced in some of the fliers obtained by our correspondent were, the University of Ibadan main gate, UNILAG main gate, and in some places in Edo State. As of this morning, a tight security presence was sighted at the main gate of UNILAG. Pictures also showed that some students had gathered at the main gate of UI, under the aegis of “Fund Education Coalition”, with their banner bearing captions like “we say no to commercialisation of education”, “every one of us must rise to defend education”, “we stand with ASUU revitalisation demand”. The strike action of the lecturers which is entering its fourth month has left public universities shut since its inception following the lecture’s demands, which the Federal Government had, allegedly, not met. One of the students at the scene, identified simply as Tolu, confirmed the development at UNILAG to The PUNCH. One of the students at the UI convergence point for the protest, who made comments to our correspondent, Solomon Emiola, said, “we are converging now”. ASUU had accused the government of poor commitment to the payment of academic earned allowance; the continued use of the Integrated Personnel Payroll Information System and refusal to adopt the Universities Transparency and ability Solution, among others. https://mgissioninfo.com.ng/blogpost/ASUU-strike-unilag-gate/

The Academic Staff Union of Polytechnics (ASUP) has threatened to shut down all Polytechnics in Nigeria if the Federal Government fails to meet up with its demands. "We are deploying this medium to equally appeal to of the public to prevail on the government to do the needful and avoid a shutdown of the sector. "In choosing to extend the long-expired three months suspension period of our industrial action, we are convinced that the extra window of one month typifies our level of restraint and consideration for our students and other of the public even as we hope that the government will take advantage of this opportunity to avoid a shutdown of the sector," Asafe said. The Minister of State for Education, Emeka Nwajiuba, has said the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) cannot dictate to the Federal Government what platform to be used in paying their salaries. He stated this in Abuja while addressing journalists shortly after receiving his presidential Nomination Form of the All Progressives Congress (APC) purchased for him by the Project Nigeria Group. "It is impractical and incongruous to continuously expect that somebody who is paid a salary continues to dictate to the someone who pays him: 'This is how you must pay me'. This is where this anomaly is," the minister said. "We have pleaded with ASUU that 'If there any areas where your salaries fall short, kindly address them within the ambit of IPPIS because that's what the government has now." Mr Nwajiuba also appealed to the striking lecturers to return to the classroom as the Federal Government is working to address some of their concerns. According to him, the strike embarked upon by ASUU was uncalled for, and expressed worry over the impact of the union's action on the education of Nigerian students.
