Governor of Ebonyi State, David Umahi, has revealed that the President-Elect, Bola Tinubu, was instrumental in his stepping down for the former Minister for Niger Delta Affairs, Godswill Akpabio, in the race for the 10th senate presidency.

The National Working Committee of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Monday ratified the zoning formula proposed by Tinubu with Akpabio favourite for the senate’s top job.

Despite the supposed consensus, some party rejected the candidacy of the former Akwa Ibom State governor, insisting on the inclusion of other geo-political zones.

But speaking at the newly constructed Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Onueke, Umahi disclosed he had to accept Tinubu’s request for greater regional unity.

“The leader of the party who is the president-elect called me and I feel it is an honour to have called me and I consulted with him while he was in Paris and he said we were going to talk about it,” he said while speaking to newsmen on Monday at the Muhammadu Buhari International Airport, Onueke in Ebonyi.

“So, when he came back he called me and we had a meeting and he said please I Have committed myself and it is his right to do that, this is the president-elect, 29th May, he is going to be the president of the country so if he had made promises of course when you are running for such office you must make promises So I won’t be a c the wheel of his progress, so I had to accept.”

The Ebonyi State governor was, however, optimistic that those party faithful will eventually reap the rewards for their loyalty to Tinubu’s istration.

“So, I also accepted for the interest of the South-East let it not look as if we are in opposition, we just oppose everything. Politics is all about dialogue, it is about give and takes and if we surrendered now or I said No, what will have happened?

“So, I had to in the interest of the South East, so since we didn’t get that one I am sure by God’s special grace the efforts some of us made in marketing APC in the South East, we are going to get some other things that are tangible.”

A fuel-laden tanker has fallen and spilled its content around Ibafo area of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday morning.

According to a source in the Federal Road Safety Corps, the crash occurred as a result of the driver's fatigue and loss of control.

This has caused traffic on both sides of the expressway.

Officials of the FRSC on ground confirmed that no life was lost in the crash.

The fourth batch of Nigerians, who were evacuated from war-torn Sudan, arrived at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja on Sunday from Aswan International Airport in Egypt.

The first batch of 376 evacuees arrived Nigeria from Egypt on Wednesday night.

The second batch of 130 evacuees arrived in the country from Port Sudan on Friday while the third batch of 132 evacuees arrived on Saturday.

The commission announced the arrival of the fourth batch and shared videos of their arrival via its Twitter handle on Sunday, with the caption, “Another batch of Evacuees: 410 Nigerians that departed Aswan International Airport, Egypt, landed at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport around 10:30 am local time on May 7 via MaxAir.

The third batch of Nigerian evacuees were received in Abuja from Port Sudan by Federal Government officials on Saturday.

According to the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, the returnees made up of 131 people, mostly women and children, landed at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport at 1:45pm.

The officials expressed optimism that the process would be successfully completed.

Their arrival came after the second batch of Sudanese evacuees arrived in Nigeria on Friday afternoon.

The second batch arrived at the Abuja Airport in Abuja around 3pm with about 130 persons aboard a Tarco Airline aircraft.

Earlier on Wednesday night, the first batch of evacuees arrived in the country from the war-torn North African country.

More Nigerians are expected to arrive in the coming days as four other airlines including Air Peace, Max Air, Azman Air, and Tarco Aviation are expected to convey them back to Nigeria.

Dr Desmond Izunwanne, a lecturer at the Imo State University, Owerri has been suspended for allegedly slapping female students who arrived at a class session behind schedule and in non-departmental uniform.

It was learnt that the management of the university approved the immediate suspension of the lecturer till further notice.

This was made known in a statement signed by the spokesperson for the University, Ralph Njokuobi, noting that the lecturer’s action was “barbaric and unbecoming.”

Njokuobi also announced that a three-man disciplinary committee was constituted to “unravel the immediate and remote causes that led to his uncouth behaviour.”

The statement read, “It has come to the notice of the Management of the Imo State University that the viral video circulating around the globe about the indecorous actions of a lecturer of the university, Dr Desmond lzunwanne of the Physiology Department, Faculty of Basic Medical Sciences of the Imo State University, Owerri, against four students of the university.

“Management viewed the action of the lecturer as barbaric and unbecoming of such a person occupying that position.

“At the end of the management meeting held on Tuesday 2 May 2023, management approved the suspension of the lecturer, Dr Desmond lzunwanne, till further notice and has set up a three-man disciplinary committee to unravel the immediate and remote causes that led to his uncouth behaviour.

"The university implored the general public and indeed all Human Rights Organisations to allow it conduct a proper investigation and recommend appropriate sanctions where necessary in line with the staff conditions of service.

“Management will not accept any breach in the academic and moral standards expected of any lecturer irrespective of how highly he is placed in the university and sincerely believe in rules of engagement between lecturers and students.

“The University is on top of the game as it affects the matter under review. Thanks for your understanding and patience,” the statement added.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Peter Obi, has said he was never arrested or detained the last time he travelled to the United Kingdom.

According to him, he didn't commit any offence, but was only called for questioning at the airport which didn’t last beyond 20 minutes.

Obi made this known during an interview on Arise TV on Monday.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has said Nigeria cannot get anything right unless workers’ welfare is well taken care of.

Obi, who spoke on Monday at the commemoration of this year’s May Day celebrations at the Eagle Square, Abuja, noted that this is the reason he is insisting on moving the country from consumption to production.

“The topic of today is socioeconomic justice. When we talk about that, we talk about justice for all,” Obi told the workers who were gathered for the global annual event used to celebrate workers’ achievement.

Nigerian students gathered in preparation for their departure from the crisis-ridden Sudan.

Foreign countries had rushed to evacuate their nationals from Sudan as deadly fighting raged into the second week between forces loyal to two rival generals.

The PUNCH reports that the Federal Government said it was making preparations to evacuate about 5,500 stranded Nigerians out of Sudan through the Egyptian town of Luxor, adding that it was seeking Egypt’s so that the stranded Nigerians could be moved to the town.

The Liberian National Police has disclosed that actress Empress Njamah’s ex-boyfriend, Nicholas Jack Davies, known as George Wade, has victimised over 20 women.

Recall that Wade had fled the country in January after releasing actress Njamah’s nude videos on social media.

In a trending video on social media on Monday, Wade was spotted in handcuffs while being led out by security operatives.

Confirming his arrest during a press briefing shared on the internet on Monday, the Liberian Police Chief revealed that 20 Liberian women have complaints against the suspect who operated in Nigeria with the name Josh Wade and carried out a similar act against Empress Njamah.

He said: “Notorious scammer Nicholas Jack Davis has been arrested by the Liberian National Police severally and charged to court. Fortunately, he returned to the community after bail and carried out the same actions he was previously charged with.

“There have been several complaints against the 39-year-old, of which the suspect has victimized over twenty females. As a result, he is involved in absconding with their personal belongings and expensive materials.

“With the recent report brought against him, we began a robot search, and he was arrested at Miami Beach while attempting to victimize other females. There is prior information of the suspect carrying the same act in Nigeria on an actress.

“He spent approximately 70 months in the country before committing the crime against the female actress. We can assure the public that all the victims will get justice and anyone with other information should visit the Liberian Police Station to their complaints to ensure the suspect does not go with impunity.”

Datti Baba-Ahmed, Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate in the February 25 election, has urged President Muhammadu Buhari not to hand over to President-elect Bola Tinubu on May 29. He also urged Olukayode Ariwoola, the Chief Justice of Nigeria, not to swear in Mr Tinubu.

Mr Baba-Ahmed begged Mr Buhari to ensure there is no handover ceremony on May 29, arguing that handing over power to Mr Tinubu would amount to handing over power to a military regime.

According to him, the incumbent president will act unconstitutionally if he hands over power to Mr Tinubu, whom INEC declared Nigeria’s president-elect.

“Mr President, do not organise that handover. CJN, your lordship, do not swear in this man so long as that problem is not (sic),” he said. Swearing in Alhaji Tinubu is as good as swearing in a military regime. They are both unconstitutional,” Mr Datti-Ahmed said Tuesday on ARISE TV.

Nigerian laws set out the process of resolving electoral disputes through the election petition tribunal and, ultimately, the Supreme Court in cases of unsatisfactory tribunal rulings.

It is unclear why Mr Baba-Ahmed is advocating for an unconstitutional extension of Mr Buhari’s grip on power when the legally set out procedures have not been exhausted.

Earlier in February, the Labour vice-presidential candidate in the February poll ed Mr Buhari’s flagrant violation of the Supreme Court order regarding the old naira notes. He railed against state governors who sued Mr Buhari’s regime over the new naira notes policy.

“They did not challenge Buhari when the Naira fell from N200 to N750 or more now to the dollar. They have not challenged him. It is only the few weeks before elections that they are challenging the president to the extent of giving counter orders of treason. It is close to treason. Lawyers will tell you that better,” Mr Datti-Ahmed said in a press conference, referring to Governor Nasir El-Rufai’s directives which retained the old naira notes as legal tender for commercial activities in the state in line with a Supreme Court ruling as opposed to Mr Buhari’s disobedience.

“Like it or hate it, Buhari’s government was duly elected and sworn in. Nigeria is a sovereign state and currency matters are a sovereign issue. No state governor… has the right to challenge the (federal) government. This is a treasonable offence,” Mr Datti-Ahmed added.

He later argued after the conference on TV that the currency issue lies solely with the president, accusing the opposing state governors of undermining Nigeria’s sovereignty.

“Why I called it treason is that a commander-in-chief gives his order and a state governor gives a direct counter order to that… call it anything, the bottom line is a commander-in-chief gives an order a state governor says don’t do it, do mine, that is treason,” Mr Datti-Ahmed claimed. “You’re undermining the sovereignty. …there is no way you can undermine a commander-in-chief by saying go and do the opposite of what he has the power to say. This is highly disrespectful.”

The Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Idowu Owohunwa, has denied reports of widespread violence and voter suppression in the governorship and House of Assembly elections held on Saturday, March 18.

The police chief disclosed this on Saturday, in an interview with Channels TV

He affirmed attacks on the electorate and electoral officers recorded at some polling units in the state but disputed the attacks were widespread.

He noted that the police responded swiftly to most of the attacks as expected.

“It is true that we’ve recorded instances of violence in some areas within the state. The incidents were not as widespread as to affect the general dynamics of the process.

“Most of the instances were properly responded to by the police because we anticipated them,” he said.

When asked if the command had anticipated the violence, he said, “Yes, in some instances.

“We anticipated and then we integrated that into our general operational plan and we activated that protocol effectively in this instance. Most of those breaches, the police were able to respond promptly.”

The police chief, while responding to a video of voters said to be overpowering a young man alleged to have snatched a ballot box disclosed it as illegal.

He said the man was rescued by the police and other security agencies, adding that the suspected electoral offender was receiving medical attention.

“He’s stable; he’s not dead,” Owohunwa said

Owohunwa futher noted that a lot of arrest were made and ballot papers were recovered.

“In most of those cases of ballot box snatching, we recovered virtually all the ballot boxes,” he said.

The presidential candidate of the APC, Bola Ahmed Tinubu has suffered yet another gaffe during the APC presidential campaign rally in Kebbi days ago by urging his ers to vote for him on 25th January.

APC presidential standard-bearer Bola Tinubu has called on governors nationwide to disregard President Muhammadu Buhari’s order that N500 and N1,000 notes are illegal tenders.

Mr Buhari announced in a state address on February 16 that the old N1,000 and N500 notes were no longer legal tender and that his regime would only reissue the old N200 note, initially outlawed, until April 10.

This announcement was met with widespread opposition from governors, including Governor Nasir El-Rufai, Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, and House of Representatives Speaker Femi Gbajabiamila, who stated defying the Supreme Court’s ruling to maintain the status quo was an invitation to anarchy.

In a circular shared on Friday by an APC presidential campaign spokesperson Dele Alake, the former Lagos governor urged “friendly governors” to follow suit with Mr El-Rufai’s and other governors’ actions disregarding Mr Buhari’s order in compliance with the Supreme Court’s ruling.

The circular added the apex court must have the final say as globally practised in a constitutional federation.

“All friendly governors must replicate Kaduna address immediately to assure the integrity of the SC (Supreme Court) and (the) rule of law for the local & international community. This is the essence of constitutional federation with the SC having final say and follows USA best practice,” the circular stated.

Mr El-Rufai on Thursday accused the Buhari regime of plotting to instigate a military coup in Nigeria to avoid transferring power to a civilian istration when his tenure expires in May.

Kano Governor Abdullahi Ganduje on Thursday said President Muhammadu Buhari did not achieve anything throughout his eight years in office, and is now determined to ruin the All Progressive Congress (APC) before leaving office in May 2023.

In a televised discussion on Thursday, Mr Ganduje, who spoke in Hausa, reminded the people how Mr Buhari had failed in his three previous attempts before 2015 when political parties merged to form APC and dislodge the Peoples Democratic Party from office.

Mr Ganduje further stated that Mr Buhari has had no tangible achievements to point out throughout his stay in office but had instead decided to destroy the party that brought him into power.

“In the first term, nothing of great importance can point out as his achievement, same as in his second term. So, why is he bringing out all these policies now? why not seven years ago? He just wants to collapse the party that produced him,” he said.

“How could care for Nigerians and then propose such a policy as the naira redesign? Why not seven years ago or after the election? This shows he is not a good leader; if he is, he would not remain calm seeing people setting properties on fire out of frustration,” the Kano governor added.

“This is why we went to the court and stand against them because we know that their motive is to prevent free and fair elections. By God’s grace, all of their efforts will be in vain because we will reverse all these policies as soon as we win the election.”

The APC stalwart also mentioned that he would adhere to orders of the Supreme Court that recognised continuous usage of old naira notes, even as the presidency and the Central Bank of Nigeria, (CBN) are asking the banks to stop accepting the notes because they had ceased to be legal tender in Nigeria.

“People’s businesses are suffering, and you are asking for more time. I’ve ordered the closure of any supermarket that rejects old naira notes. Supreme Court recognizes the notes, and you are asking banks not to accept the notes. Who is more powerful between the Court and them?” Mr Ganduje, an ally of the president, said.

A spokesman for the president did not return a request seeking comments about the Kano governor’s comments on Thursday night. The attack came as other of the president’s party were intensifying their pushback again the decision to delist N200, N500 and N1,000 banknotes across the country. The politicians, mostly governors of the ruling party, said Mr Buhari’s action was designed to plunge the nation into chaos.

Governor Nasir El-Rufai said the Buhari istration was working towards a military coup in Nigeria, saying an army general had already been pegged down to lead an interim government when Mr Buhari’s tenure ends on May 31. The president has denied any nefarious motives behind the policy, saying it was designed to curb money laundering and vote buying during the general elections.

Former Edo state governor, Adam Oshiomhole, on Wednesday, came to the rescue of the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, has he left netizens rattled following another gaffe during his presidential rally in Rivers.

Tinubu rattled social media s when he threw up his hands during the recitation of the national anthem.

The APC flagbearer was seen holding up the staff with two hands as soon as the announcer instructed everyone to stand up for the national item.

While others in his entourage, including the APC vice-presidential candidate, Kashim Shettima and Oshiomhole stood attentively for the anthem as norm requires, it was only Tinubu that unconsciously acted otherwise.

Noticing the massive blunder by Mr Tinubu, Mr Oshiomhole had to intervene by tapping him to return Tinubu back to consciousness and subsequently turn his hands downward.

This is the latest episode of blunders by Mr Tinubu since the APC presidential campaign train began travelling the states across the federation.

The governor of Kogi State, Yahaya Bello has said that everyone in Nigeria is suffering because of the naira scarcity caused by the naira redesign.

Bello disclosed this to newsmen after the adjournment by the supreme court on Wednesday.

The presidential candidate of the Labour Party (LP), Peter Obi has explained that the Oba of Lagos, HRH Rilwan Akiolu was not “readily available” when he requested to visit him during his campaign in the nation’s economic capital.

“On my arrival in Lagos, I did ask that I wanted to visit the Oba whom I regard as a father figure,” Obi said Monday on Channels Television’s special election programme, The 2023 Verdict.

It is customary for presidential candidates to pay homage to first-class traditional rulers when they visit states to campaign but controversy had surrounded Obi’s inability to meet the Lagos monarch during his outing in the state.

However, the former governor of Anambra State said the reports that the first-class monarch refused to see him were untrue.

Obi said what happened in Lagos wasn’t unusual as it had happened during his planned visits to traditional rulers in states he had campaigned. According to him, one or two monarchs were not readily available to receive him in the past but they fixed future dates.

He said, “Some even say, ‘Oh, he (Oba of Lagos) refused to see me’. It is not true.

“The truth is that when we arrived, we wanted to do what we want to do: arrive and drive to the palace and see the Oba but we were told that he is not readily available and that we should apply and come at some other date and that we intend to do because he remains a highly respected father to me and to the entire nation.”
