Nigeria’s UN Humanitarian Assistance to Terminate in 2026
The Journal Nigeria May 29, 2025

Iliyasu Abdullahi Bah

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) will end its activities in Nigeria in 2026 due to challenges in funding, head of the organisation, Trond Jensen, said.

Jensen however said the organisation will still operate remotely and make periodic deployments to humanitarian action, local ownership, and long-term resilience despite the funding challenges.

“We are not leaving entirely, but our footprint will shrink,” the official said.

OCHA, which made this known when he paid a courtesy visit to Yobe State Governor, Mai Mala Buni in Damaturu, said major donors have either completely stopped or reduced their funding by half.

The countries, he said, include the United States which had announced total stoppage of critical funding, the UK with a 40% reduction, as well as and the Netherlands with 50% cuts.

Jensen expressed concern that cuts in critical funding of humanitarian activities came when there was a surge in the need for humanitarian intervention.

He particularly said that presently, the ability of the organisation to treat malnutrition in Borno, Adamawa and Yobe states has been reduced by half, just as the number of severely malnourished children has doubled from 500,000 to one million this year.

The UN official said there should be stronger partnerships between local governments and NGOs to fill the gap. He praised Yobe’s Durable Solutions Group for allocating 25% of its budget to displaced populations, and emphasised the need for more efficient transparent systems to sustain operations.

In his response, Governor Buni said Yobe remains committed to rebuilding conflict-affected communities, ensuring returns of IDPs with access to farmlands, livelihoods, and critical infrastructure.

Governor Buni reaffirmed the istration’s readiness to innovate amid the funding gaps.

Despite the lingering insecurity in the northeast, it didn’t stop us from celebrating our young stars - their joy is unstoppable. The even featured fun activities such as like sack race, blind race and egg race.

But beyond the speeches, promises, and photo ops, it’s time to move from words to action.

Let’s work together to secure a future worthy of these children’s dreams.

With an army of SANs (and trust me, they don’t come cheap) defending him every week, you’ve got to wonder - whose deep pockets are keeping this legal circus running?.....curious me.

Let’s talk about a practice that has become a norm in Nigeria’s National Assembly - the sacred act of bowing to the Mace. Yes, that fancy staff that our lawmakers treat with utmost reverence, like it holds the key to paradise (or at least to budget approvals).

But here’s the million-naira question: Is it biblical?

Exodus 20:4-5 clearly states: "Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image... thou shalt not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them." Now, before you say, "But it’s just a tradition," let’s pause and think.

The Mace is a crafted object, an official symbol of authority, yes - but at what point does it become an idol? If people must bow before it to show respect, are we skating on thin spiritual ice?

Some argue that bowing to the Mace is just a formal gesture, no different from standing for a national anthem or saluting a flag. Others insist that it crosses into dangerous territory- because why bow to a carved object when God strictly warns against it?

So, dear Nairalanders, let’s dissect this: Is bowing to the Mace just tradition, or does it flirt with idolatry? Your thoughts please.

Why do Nigerian pastors seem to focus on healing unknown persons with disabilities while popular figures like Cobhams Asuquo and Yinka Ayefele, who also have special needs, remain untouched by these "miracles"?

We hear of countless testimonies of the blind seeing and the lame walking, yet these well-known personalities remain as they are.

It raises a question: is God still in the business of creative miracles, or is something else at play?

I recently my car of similar model for the same reason of high fuel consumption.

Car was gulping too much fuel for no reason. Had to sell it after three years of use.

Good thing is, I made 500k off the amount I bought for it in 2021.

I went to the popular spare parts market in the city of Maiduguri to get some parts for my car, and right in front of me were men dressed in plain clothes welding firearms.

With the dwindling insecurity in the country, where unknown gunmen are on the loose, security personnel shouldn't be seen carrying arms on plain clothes.

What do you think?

All i receive is this same error message, "sorry, the service provider is currently unavailable, please try again later".

Has my access bank been deactivated?

Considering the economic situation in the country, a roasted maize seller was spotted dividing a maize into half in order to sell to those who can not afford to buy a full maize, which sells for between 150 and 200 naira depending on the size.

Things are really tough for many.

Elementary gospel vs deep revelations (rhema), which has helped us?

Me: I'm tired of deep revelations. Deep revelations have not helped us in anyway. Infact they are our problems. Just gimme elementary gospel found in Exodus 20. "Love your nebor as yourself." periodt!

If you were to live in the first century - in Jesus' days, which Bible character would you have being? given the circumstance.

Me: Thomas

Reason: Omo! Jesus did things (miracles) that defied logic, science, and human understanding.

So, it would have been only natural to question them - before believing lol grin grin🤔

Mine had a similar issue last week.

My mechanic diagnosed it as an ECU problem.

I spent 80k on a new ECU. After programming it, the last gear works perfectly.

I would suggest you change the brain box.

For me, the best Nigerian president remains Olusegun Obasanjo.

Though I may not have been born in the 60s when Nigeria gained her independence, but i have been around for a while to witness different istrations.

OBJ was intelligent and brutal especially when faced with opposing views. And had an enviable sense of humor sauced with savagery grin

Recall when Eedris sang " Nigeria Jagajaga", Obj put it to him ASAP that; "Na your mama and papa jagajaga" grin

Anyways I also think he was in the best position -no Nigerian President may ever have- to salvage this country from the bricks.

Reasons:

The long nights of Military juntas had just ended. And a joyous daybreak of Democratic values had begun in 1999.

Going by OBJ's military background, Nigerians werent so sure - the nascent- Democracy had fully come to stay. Thus were still scared, naive and skeptical about the ex-military man. And not many wanted to oppose his views on issues - dissenting voices weren't so vocal like they are today.

If Obasanjo had gotten it right, no doubt Nigeria would have been on the highway to prosperity and developments.

As much as I still prefer his istration to any other one, I also think he shares a huge blame-chunk of where we are as a country today.
