Before being annexed by Benin, Akure was under Ijesa and the first Deji was the grandson of the legendary Owa Atakunmosa. The full meaning of Deji is Owafadeji meaning The Owa gifted him a crown. The Benin invasion was repelled at Ikeji ile Ijesa but they remained in control of Akure before Akure was able to turn the table against the Benin. Akure ended up making Benin its tributary later. You can say Akure has come to their own but their monarchy and crown was originally Ijesa. No debate about that. I think it is better they revert to what they were before the Benin invasion which is Ijesa. Efon Alaaye for instance speak exactly the same language as Ijesa but the Alaaye crown is not an Ijesa crown unless they choose to because of proximity. Secondly, if you say Akure is more of Ekiti, you can as well say the whole of Ijesa should identify as Ekiti. Akure was a part of Ijesa land before it was occupied by the Benin and later won her independence. That is enough for the people and land to identify as Ijesa. There are many towns in Ijesa land whose monarchies were not inaugurated by any Owa Obokun of Ijesa land having being in existence before Ijesa was inaugurated. Akure is okay to be part of an Ijesa state.

There was no time in history where Akure was part of Ìjèsà. Deji used to be part of Ekiti pelupelu Obas.

Ekiti towns without such ending are now in ondo and kwara states. Although it`s high time this is removed.

Ekiti people are in Ekiti, Kwara and 3 LGAs in Ondo state: Akure North, South and Ifedore. They have close groups like Ijesas, Okuns, Igbominas, Ondos, Akokos and Owos as neighbours.

They are one of the largest Yoruba subgroups.
A king in Ekiti Kwara and Deji of Akure used to be part of Ekiti kings' Pelupelu. Recently, Ekiti in Kwara is associating more with their Igbomina neighbours because they're in the same state and have same challenges. Although there have been moves to their kins in Ekiti State several times; Otun Ekiti was calved into West Central State (Kwara) initially in the 60s but fought very hard to be in Western State and Ondo State (now Ekiti State).

It's so odd to find out that someone from Odo Owa (where Pastor/Prophet Ayo Babalola of C.A.C came from) a stone throw from Erimope-Ekiti is a northerner. Just like many Ekitis, Igbominas, Okuns and Ibolos are forced Yoruba Northerners.

On the import of the proverb, our forebears said something profound: eni koko e ye lo moo lo. Its akin to saying olowo laye mo.

Most folks that I've asked to attempt the proverb often says it means people acknowledge only the successful. Well this is right too.

Howbeit, the direct meaning is given and going by the translation, its the man whose business thrive that's really experienced.

The core of the proverb is not subjective veneration of success but appreciation of the experience of the successful in a free market or an agrarian economy.

Having that understanding at the back of the mind would go a long way.

My people would say, "Ẹ kú làákàyè".

I couldn't have written it in English orthography.

Koko is quite different from "ikoko": please pay keen attention.

Eni koko e ye lo moo lo.

The one whose cocoa survived is knowledgeable at twisting it.

Here's an exercise for you.

Give it a try.

Pardon me, not too deep in Yoruba proverbs.

And the language is tonal;

'Eni Koko e ye lo moo lo'

Without tonal marks, one can interpret the above proverb as:

1. Whoever has his/her pot tottering/leaning/inclining uses it better.

2. Whoever tottered her hip knows its use.

3. Whoever understands her pot have better use of it.

I will appreciate use of tonal marks to complete the exercise; doubt if I have heard this proverb before.
