PDP chieftain to resign over Atiku’s choice of Okowa as running mate

The PDP official says Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike deserves the nomination more than Governor Ifeanyi Okowa.

A former commissioner for Information in Edo State, Kassim Afegbua, has given notice that he would be leaving the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) over the choice of Delta Governor, Ifeanyi Okowa, as the party’s vice presidential candidate.

The PDP presidential candidate on Thursday afternoon presented Mr Okowa as his running mate in the February 25, 2023 presidential election.

But Mr Afegbua, who was also a former spokesperson to former military dictator, Ibrahim Babangida, said Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike, deserves the nomination ahead of Mr Okowa.

Mr Wike came second in the PDP presidential primary on May 29 in an election in which Mr Okowa led his state’s delegates to vote for Atiku.

However, Mr Afegbua described Atiku’s choice of the Delta State governor as a reward for treachery, noting that Mr Okowa had hosted the meeting of the Southern Governors’ Forum in Asaba last year where the governors demanded that the next Nigerian president should be produced by the southern region.

Mr Afegbua spoke Thursday afternoon during a popular Arise News show, The Arise Interview.

In protest at the alleged betrayal of the declaration by Mr Okowa in ing Atiku at the primary and in accepting to be his running mate, Mr Afegbua said he would stand aside from the PDP and the candidate of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Bola Tinubu, in the presidential election.

Mr Afegbua stressed that he would not be ing the APC but would only be campaigning for its standard bearer.

The outspoken former commissioner had also rebelled against the PDP in 2020 for handing Governor Godwin Obaseki its ticket for reelection after the governor was disqualified from the APC governorship primary for alleged forgery of an academic certificate.

Mr Obaseki went ahead to win the election on the PDP ticket as the party suspended Mr Afegbua for alleged anti-party activities.

Leke Abejide, lawmaker representing Yagba East/West/Mopamuro constituency in the house of representatives, says he earns a total sum of N691,911 as salary monthly

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) lawmaker allowed Channels Television to display the credit alert for his May salary during Sunrise Daily on Thursday.

Abejide said he receives N113 million annually for constituency projects, but that the government takes 18.5 percent of it.

The Kogi lawmaker said coupled with this, the monthly demands from the people of his constituency is more than N30 million monthly.

Although the lawmaker did not reveal the amount he receives as allowance, he said after all deductions, he goes away with less than N1.5 million monthly.

“That’s what I get in a month. The only difference you see is the constituency project,” he said.

My constituency project is N113 million in a year, and in this N113 million, the government will take 18.5 percent. The tax is five percent, VAT is 7.5 percent, stamp duty is one percent. Then the agency where the project is domicile will take five percent, that’s the minimum, some take more than that.

“As a new member, in order to satisfy my people, I have used up my allowance. I have police, personal staff, then people in the constituency are also there waiting for me.

“In a month, I don’t think I always have up to N1.5 million, and I have a family to take care of. So, if you’re coming to this system and you’re someone who has been working on your own, you won’t like to continue.

“There was a time I was contemplating leaving because the demands coming from my constituency in a month is in the range of N30 million and N40 million every month.

“That’s the danger of this assembly. I told people that in the next election, I’m not going to contest, that they should allow someone else to experience what I’m experiencing, but people insisted that I must go.

“So, if you’re not a man of means, and you come to this seat, people will be stoning you.”

Ohanaeze apologises for not providing rallying point during PDP, APC presidential primaries

Following Governor David Umahi’s outburst against the leadership of Ohanaeze Ndigbo over its attitude during the last Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential primary elections, which saw a woeful performance of candidates from South East, Ohanaeze, yesterday, tendered an apology to Ndigbo, Umahi and others for not providing a rallying point for them to garner more delegates for the zone during the two primaries, insisting that it’s not over for South East.

It will be recalled that Umahi, who is also the Chairman of, the South-East Governors Forum, had, during the matriculation of Kind David University of Medical Sciences Ubuntu, criticised the President General (PG) of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor, for his alleged role in the failure of aspirants from the region in the just concluded presidential primaries, declaring he would no longer recognise him as the PG of the pan-Igbo cultural body.

Umahi, a former presidential aspirant of the APC, alleged that Obiozor was partisan. He said: “Instead of making himself a rallying point during the struggle for the presidency of Igbo extraction, he failed to stand for the South East when it mattered most, saying that it is a shame.

Meanwhile, in a statement in Abakaliki, the Secretary-General of Ohanaeze, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, called for a truce and calm, adding that the blame game should lessen, stressing that they are back on the drawing board, in partnership with stakeholders in the South East as it’s not over until it’s over.

Isiguzoro stated that the Igbo organisation shares in the traumas and pains of Ndigbo, particularly in the lamentations of Umahi, noting that Ohanaeze tenders unreserved apologies to Ndigbo and the South-East governors.

Precious Chikwendu, the ex-wife of former aviation minister, Femi Fani Kayode has appreciated him for giving her the opportunity to reunite with her kids.

The ex-beauty queen and the former Minister have been in a nasty custody war over their 4 kids.

Chikwendu and Fani-Kayode have been enmeshed in a legal battle for the custody of their four boys since 2020.

It seems the extranged couple have set aside their differences to put their kids first.

Precious took to Instagram hours ago to thank him for the opportunity he gave her to see her kids.

She wrote, “The way to slay to a play date with your sons. 4eal_ffk. Nice".

Kemi Filani news recalls Precious Chikwendu had started an online petition on change.org to force her estranged husband, Femi Fani-Kayode, to allow her have access to her children

The online petition named ‘Justice for Snowhite and sons’ is addressed to the United Nations and seven others.

A brief note about the petition reads, “Precious Chikwendu, Miss United Nations 2014, cohabited with former minister of aviation of Nigeria, Femi Fani-Kayode who has a history of abusing women. She experienced severe mental and physical abuse for the period 6 years they were together. She was locked up in a mental home where she was injected with substances on the orders of Femi Fani-Kayode to enable him create a situation to take over her kids. Since Precious walked away on August 2nd 2020, she has not been allowed any form of access to her children.

“In December 2021, the former Minster disobeyed court orders to allow her access to her children. Several court suits to have access to her children through the Nigerian court system have been met with a roadblock as Precious still has no access to her kids who are all below the age of six. She has taken all legal steps as permitted by her country but the country has failed her as the former minister still walks around like a hero and free even with proofs of domestic violence, assault and battery.

“Precious is seeking justice and custody of her children. This bill will help her bring her problem before the International community.”

The petition came about 48 hours after she penned a sad, public note to her first son Lotanna on his birthday.

Encouraging the public to sign the petition, Chikwendu wrote in an Instagram post, “If you believe we can, then kindly append your and share by visiting my bio or using the link below. We would reach all international agencies reachable so please don’t get tired of my request.”

More than 6,000 persons signed the petition, with the target been 7,500.

The Chairman of the independent National Electoral commission (INEC), Mahmood Yakubu, says sensitive electoral materials will in the meantime no longer be routed through the Central bank of Nigeria (CBN).

He also specifically notes that, beginning from the Ekiti state Governorship election, INEC will not keep its sensitive materials with the CBN.

According to him, this decision is to guarantee that electoral materials for the lined up Elections are not compromised

The INEC Chairman stated this while responding to questions in an ongoing dialogue in Elections in Abuja.

Several individuals and groups have raised serious concern about the sanctity of Elections materials kept with the CBN, after stories about the CBN governor, Mr Godwin Emefiele, indicating interest to contest for the country’s presidential seat hit the airwaves in recent months.

GNI is indeed a confused man.

From contesting governorship elections in Ogun State in 2011 and 2015 under the Peoples Party of Nigeria (PPN) and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) respectively, to now struggling for Senatorial ticket with political heavy weights like Solomon Adeola, Tolu Odebiyi and Isiaq Akinlade and now going lower to settle for House of Rep ticket only shows he doesn't know what he wants.

Former President Olusegun Obasanjo, on Thursday, said Nigeria required a leader driven by ion and ‘madness’ to rule the country and put it on the right footing.

Obasanjo said he had no other country he could call his own and had no other country he could go to.

Obasanjo stated this when he played host to a presidential aspirant under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, Mohammed Hayatu-Deen, at his penthouse residence in the Olusegun Obasanjo Presidential Library in Abeokuta, the Ogun State capital.

The former President also played host to Godswill Akpabio who is running for the presidency on the platform of the All Progressives Congress.

Our correspondent gathered that Hayatu – Deen in the company of his team first arrived at about 12:30 pm and went straight into a closed-door meeting with Obasanjo which lasted for about an hour.

Obasanjo and Hayatu-Deen after the meeting spoke before the newsmen briefly, describing the visit as a friendly one.

It was also gathered that Akpabio arrived at exactly 2:20 pm while the Hayatu Deen team was exiting the Obasanjo’s residence

Akpabio recently resigned his appointment as the Minister of Niger Delta to allow him to contest for the APC presidential ticket.

Obasanjo, in his remarks, lamented that the current situation in Nigeria was not only agonising for him, but for other Nigerians who also desired a better Nigeria.

According to him, Nigeria requires a leader who has a ion, innovation, and vision for Nigeria and some who possess adequate knowledge about the challenges confronting the country.

He insisted that Nigeria can overcome its security challenges within two years with the right leader who would be willing to make tough decisions.

Obasanjo, therefore, urged Nigerians to brace up and be ready to make sacrifices to put the country back on the right path.

He said, “It is an agonising situation for you, obviously, and also for me. I want to emphasise the point that the Nigerian situation, as bad as it is, will only be put right by Nigerians at the forefront of our situation. So, Nigerians have to brace themselves up to do what needs to be done to put Nigeria back on the right path.

“And you are right in saying that, wherever you go now, one of the things you hear is that Nigeria is not on the table, but why shouldn’t Nigeria be on the table? What does it cost Nigeria to be on the table?

“I will say four things, of which I was reminded this morning. One is knowledge. If Nigeria is not at the table, maybe the knowledge that we should have of ourselves, of our situation, of our continent, and indeed of the world is not that adequate, if that knowledge is adequate, we will do what is right, when it is right and how it is right.

“The second is vision, what is the vision that we have? And if you have no vision, you may have eyes, but you are blind. And I believe that is part of our situation.

The third is ion. And when you said, that you are involved in this, with a ion and I was telling some people this morning that, ion means madness, that you are mad about Nigeria, I am and I have no apologies for that because I have no other country I can call my own and I have no other country I can go to and say yes, I have come to live here.

ion means being mad about Nigeria, having a touch of madness, and I look at you (Hayatu-Deen) and say yes, you are mad about Nigeria too.

“Fourth one is innovation. We cannot be doing the same thing that we have done in the past that did not pay us and continue to repeat it and expect any change, we have to move out it, we have to innovate, we have to re-strategise.”

Earlier in his remarks, Hayatu-Deen declared that Nigeria was “decomposing and dissolving very fast”, and there was a need to urgently rescue the country.

Hayatu-Deen, a former Managing Director of FSB International Bank, later met with the PDP delegates at the party secretariat in Abeokuta and sought their in the forthcoming presidential primaries.

In his remarks, Akpabio said he visited Obasanjo to intimate him of his presidential bid, saying the former president remained “partyless’ and whose elderly advice is required at all times.”

He urged Nigerians to judge him by his records of achievement and not based on religion or ethnicity.

The former minister promised to replicate his “uncommon achievements” in Akwa Ibom State as the governor if elected president.
