Thanks Cochtrane you are one of the key resource persons on this thread and I don't dispute your post. I didn't want to respond but to put things in perspective to avoid potential contention as I see @AZeD1 has also picked this insufficient POF thing.

Now, before my trip I never even intended carrying the cash of about $20k being POF for family of three on me it just happened that I had a bad experience when I tried buying the dollar I was to carry on me. Few days before the trip I had printed my bank statement and also collected receipt for treasury bill I still have, these amounts even exceeded my required POF. I did this because I envisioned they might ask proof of my total POF. Some people on this thread have even stated where they had to to their mobile banking app to show evidence they had the money.

That being said please don't go confidently with few dollars without back up info on your financial status and expect some over zealous border officer won't ask you about your total POF.

What I meant in my post was that even if you don't carry the total physical cash on you, you fit still enter as there are hundreds of PRs a lot of whom I know that have crossed into canada without carrying in physical cash their total POF please. Showing balance, investment certificate or statement has been proven to work in different instances in addition to the physical cash you have on you.

cochtrane:

Interesting gist. Wish you the best in Canada!

I don't think the above is correct. Insufficient POF is usually enough reason to turn anyone back at the border. It's clearly spelt in the instructions, but is left to the discretion of the border officer. I'm sure the officers certainly felt you have enough POF (in the bank), but have only chosen to travel with smaller cash.

‘’LANDING GIST’’

I've benefited quite a lot from this thread and even the Express Entry thread, 95% of the resources I used for this journey came from Nairaland and though I am silent most of the time I really want to encourage and thank especially those who constantly respond to questions here. We got PPR since march last year but had to sort out some things in naija hence our landing now.

Our journey started from Calabar, family of three, we had to send some baggage through Courier to my Sister in Abuja where we eventually took off.

Take off date was 19th January with Ethiopian airline, and we arrived the airport at about 9.25am for a flight of 1.30pm. It was too early to part with family so we had to proceed with checking in to come out later for final goodbyes and the cry cry.
First check in point with immigration dem bounce our 75cl palm oil but lucky for us one escaped. I sharply collected it and gave the baggage guy to give my mum outside, if we no fit carry am travel Immigration no go flex on top our oil. They still probed further about our honey but I talked that one through.

Next we went to get boarding which was smooth except for when it came to baggage weight wahala. I used the old school scale at home so I knew one of my bags was like 28kg. I argued with the guy that online check in should give me 5kg free but he insisted that the information on the website is misleading and doesn’t suffice, I sha still argue small and finally he waived it. I tipped the guy at the baggage scale because he did small magic too.

Subsequent checks before boarding were smooth, once them see that Canada immigrant Visa remain make dem salute us to , chai naija port don suffer person. I was now thinking to myself what would happened when person get that Canada port finally. We left for Addis Ababa flight was smooth, inflight entertainment on point, food just manageable, lay over time about 2.30hrs, their wifi wasn’t functional at the time so couldn’t reach family. Flight to Dublin was cool too lay over of about an hour for re-fueling and crew change. We took off for Toronto afterwards and arrived at about 7.30am local time but the snow was something else so it took a while before we even disembarked. I just knew we’d miss our connecting flight to Calgary which was for 9.30am. We were later rescheduled however for another flight.

Now, getting to the immigration officer at the POE was traumatic for us because we had a terrible experience while trying to get dollars the day before our trip. The transfer we did to the BDC till now has not even impacted and neither has the funds been reversed back to our so we only had cash of $2,000 on us for a family of three and with all the news of immigration officers being strict with showing POF we sha bolded up and met the guy, he asked how much we had and I said $2k the guy now looked at me and asked me again you said how much and I answered $2k, I was now trying to explain that I have the balance in my blah blah but he wasn’t even interested and just stamped my declaration card and told us to proceed and that was it oh. We met another immigration officer and he expressed shock too at us just having $2k but he still let us in without much hassle. Just be confident in your response and hold God POF isn’t enough reason for them to turn you back at the POE.
We landed Calgary exhausted and three of our bags didn’t land with us and they had critical items in them. This stressed us further but they promised to deliver them which they didn’t as there was now some communication mix up and I had to still go pick them from the airport 24hrs later.

Accommodation for us was easy as we already had a place before landing, we got a referral to a naija landlord who gave us a very warm welcome, cooked for us and even stocked our fridge reasonably. We also had a family friend who helped signed off as guarantor, picked us from the airport and welcomed us warmly.
The cold no be here oh but I understand it’s been the mildest winter in a long while so we’d just enjoy it while it last. You can never be too prepared for this journey, just do your best and leave the rest to God.

Another thing, we deliberately mistakenly omitted declaring the fish we brought in but thank God dem no catch us else I understand it would have been a serious issue for us, so it’s always safer to declare to avoid being caught out as the trauma wasn’t here waiting to know if dem go catch us or not. By the time I spoke to someone who advised I declare correctly dem don cross off the “yes” option so I couldn’t adjust it again.

We've gotten SIN and ed for our Health Cards, opened s and credit cards are on the way. Going to the immigration service centres later this week to get a settlement councilor. There's still so much to do but na one step at a time. Everybody dey run different race just do you cos what works for person A may not work for person B. You suddenly realize 24hrs a day isn't enough any longer but I'm very positive that we would settle down effectively, get jobs and start our respectively school/certification programs soonest so we can level up.

Thanks guys for reading through and may we fight less please and if we must fight may it be very constructive and beneficial to all.

Every dream begins with a dreamer but dreams don't come true by magic, it takes hard work, determination and sweat. Let's keep being positive and pushing, our dreams will surely come true.

God bless us all.

Same thing I did it was very easy and straight forward. I even got the e-ticket earlier than I expected. I thought you've landed already sef.

Newmum0615:
Nope. Their numbers are listed on their website. I did a transfer to one of them and they sent my ticket via my d email. It's a simple process.

This is quite selfless and I commend you. I would really love to be part of this but not landing till sometime in December. I hope we can work out something by then.

SixSigma1:

With @vascey asking about mentoring, it got me thinking about how I can contribute to the success of my fellow citizens who are already in Calgary and surrounding areas (Airdrie, Chestermere etc) in their Canadian dream . In view of this and despite my very busy schedule, I have decided to offer crash course in Lean Six Sigma Black Belt FREE OF CHARGE for Nairalanders in Calgary and surrounding areas. The course will take place on a Saturday and it will take 4 hours. You will learn the basic Lean Six Sigma tools and the basics of Lean Six Sigma to enable you decide if it is something you want to do to boost your existing career or to jump start your career in Canada.

In order for me to do this and for it to be worth my time and effort there has to be minimum of 3 people interested in taking the course. When we get the required minimum number of people we can use one of the libraries in Calgary as the venue of the course. I know that some libraries in Calgary have meeting rooms that they give out free of charge for this type of community activity. So, we can take advantage of that.

If we have more interest than the meeting room can take, I am willing to have multiple sessions to accommodate all interested Nairalanders. If you are not in Calgary but willing to come to Calgary for the session you are also welcome to attend.

The only two things I am asking for in return for this free course are:
1. For you to also help other people succeed free of charge in any capacity you may have. Let the circle of help continue.
2. Not to take the offer for granted by coming late to or being absent at the sessions scheduled date just because you are getting it for free. Please be mindful of my time.

Finally, if you are interested, make your interest known by posting here on the general platform.

Please clarify further and I'd also love the landed seniors to make inputs here. Do you imply that with my Local DL I can't drive when I arrive calgary for the first three months? My DL expires soon and I intend renewing but going by what you just said it makes no sense since I can't drive with it and I can still use the expired one to apply for Canadian DL.

walexlo78:
Hi efam,

SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT FOR CALGARY BOUND IMMIGRANTS, YOU CAN ONLY DRIVE WITH BOTH YOUR LOCAL DL AND INTERNATIONAL DL FROM NIGERIA. I have always thought our local DL alone is sufficient to drive for 3mths.

Congrats to all who got ITA yesterday and I pray everybody is favoured on this new thread whatever stage you are in.

In other news my COPR has been sleeping at AVO since 9th April and there's a new policy I understand before they release your documents to the courier guys. You need to do an authorisation mail to [email protected] and [email protected] with [email protected] in copy else they won't release the documents like mine which has been chilling there.

So guys take note.

Long post alert!!

My timeline below. Now I'd be as detailed as possible because I drew a lot of strength from the timelines of others and hope mine gets to inspire somebody.

IELTS - 30/9/17 LRWS 7.5,8.5,8,7.5 FIRST ATTEMPT
IELTS - 14/10/17 LRWS 8.5,7.5,8,8 SECOND AND LAST ATTEMPT
ECA - 23/01/18 (IQAS)
ITA - 26/01/18
AOR - 08/2/18
IP1 - 10/2/18
NA1 - 14/2/18
MEP - 18/2/18
NA2 - 21/2/18
IP2 - 27/2/18
PPR - 19/3/18

I started my ECA August 2017 after struggling to get my MBA result for masters I finished since 2015 so my battle started with getting statement of result first. Whatever your battle is it must .

For IELTS i used ieltsbuddy.com, ieltsessentials.com,ieltsliz.com. I used youtube mainly for listening cos after I had 7.5 for my first listening eye clear me and I had to burn that data and livestream practice modules.

ECA with IQAS can be crazy because the wait time is killing. I used them as I didn't want the wahala of going back to beg for verification especially as I no trust this NASU guys. They evaluated my Executive masters as canadian equivalent.

Now for POF I used Treasury bills certificate for about 70% of it while I used 25% of my pension fund to make up the balance. Half of the Tbills matured on 15th march sef and it had been running since October last year.
I didn't include my statement of deliberately for personal reasons and I didn't also include any reference letter from the bank.

My employment reference letter is where my heart was thumbing as my employer look me for eye tell me say dem no go give me reference letter but God is not man and God man. You can imagine with 9yrs work experience. Thanks to post shared here I spoke with my immediate boss beg the guy tire and he now signed a reference letter on plain sheet, I notarized it and added his id card and mine. I included my to and fro mail with HR wey dem no gree give me the reference as evidence then included some work mails and payslip. I still dodge to include my statement.

I had three UK visa refusals in the past, those guys almost messed up my self esteem but thanks to canada for my trouble God has given me double. I stated the refusals and included the refusal letters sef ( yea been keeping them since 2013 ). I also included schedule A.

For the port for EAPR I didn't adjust nada na how I snap am for studio 24 in anticipation of PPR with the 50 mm x 70 mm dimension na so I am especially since the instruction said at least 35 mm x 45mm. I also ed my expired port data page with stickers and stamp pages.

Now guys that's my story in summary and I hope it inspires someone that no matter the challenge facing you now in this journey be it ECA,IELTS,POF or awaiting PPR just remain focused, calm and prayerful and you would conquer. I never believed I would get PPR after 41 days despite all this my comma.

This thread has been immensely helpful and to think I read everything from thread 1 though I ed midway there, it can only be God. I encourage us to read extensively and do our own research too and as much as you can when submitting include every every.

Wonderful people too numerous to holla but God sees you all and would bless us in this journey.

IT HAS ENDED IN PRAISE, though the journey still continues.

linuslynx:
