i would say the answer is pretty obvious, particularly considering the way the question has been addressed, anyway best avoid the situation if you can, it can be pretty sticky if you get caught, and everyone knows how self-righteous and indignant men can be when they think they have been wronged.

For some reason I always thought it was French. I think I vaguely recall seeing it in ' Afrique' Book 2 when I was in secondary school. I may be wrong though

the way I see it dear, it depends on your boss if he's going to be petty about it then there's really nothing you can do in which case you would definitely be right to leave his establishment. Notwithstanding if you have a career plan I think you should stick to it, you are only responsible for number one.

ganza: Still here … I guess the problem is that sometimes we go into the profession just hoping to come out as lawyers without any idea of what area we intend to specialize in. And for those of us that schooled in Nigeria, we all know that six years of study (excluding ‘strike’ periods) is no joke. Let’s not even talk about the conditions of study or the crap you have to put up with from your lecturers (who may not necessarily be evil but may just be frustrated with the system themselves). Possibly some of us shouldn’t even have studied law. The common perception was that once you were not an ‘arts student’ in secondary school, you just had to study law. I for one would have studied ing or something similar and been out of school ages ago if I had not been misled to think that arts/future law students weren’t good at mathematics which I discovered is utter bollocks ‘because I’m pretty good with figures. Bottom line is, before even entering university to study law you need to decide which path you are going to follow. Are you interested in litigation in which case your apex could either be as a JSC or an SAN? Another option could be Corporate/Commercial law and forgetting about any major litigation practice (which I think is overrated, but that’s a story for another day). Then there’s the decision about what corporate sector you’re going to be in, aviation, Energy, Tax, IP blah blah blah. Even then you would then need to decide whether you would be a practicing corporate lawyer, or legal adviser in a company. Obviously, by this time you would have realized that if you would rather be a company secretary, your role would be slightly diminished to something somewhat more istrative than legal (ganza why were you surprised, forgotten that CAMA indicates that even an ant or qualified could be company secretary? ![]() Once you decide what you want to do be prepared to stick with and put up with the crap that comes your way, keep your eyes open and for goodness’ sake network! (even if you are naturally anti-social) I’ve read all the comments about stingy principles, but those guys are only looking out for number one, and like it or not they have the one thing that places them above juniors… experience. And we all know that degrees and grades don’t mean a damn thing to clients. A client with real cheddar would rather settle for an old experienced lawyer than a fresher with three LLMs and a PhD. After all shey they said Gani came out with a third class. If after all the planning, it still doesn’t pay, abeg look for something else to do. As I tell my friends - don’t seek for emotional satisfaction from your job, seek for money and get the emotional satisfaction from your folks at home. I don’t expect absolute alignment with my comments from most people, but I believe that’s the way the cookie crumbles. In addition, when we get to the top (by His grace) let’s to pay our juniors reasonable wages and forget the ‘injustice’ we suffered at the hands of senior lawyers, after today’s seniors were yesterday’s juniors, abi? |

@kamikaze thanks for the info, in my shortsighted manner, once I think legal practice in the oil industry, I think JOAs, PSCs blah blah what’s it like working there? Did you pick what area of law you wanted to work in or were you just assigned to the property division? Hey soapdish! I’m just a very simple, very stress-free female lawyer, nothing special. I’m in legal practice and I’m thinking of becoming sector-specific in the near future. How’re you doing anyway and what do you? BTW Congrats to you and kamikaze on the hook up. |

kamikaze: hi abeg this sounds interesting. kamikaze out of curiosity (and excuse me for being so forward), I thought you worked in the oil industry |

GL thanks for your comments on tax, unlike quite a number of people have been posting in this thread churches do not pay tax on charitable concerns only, once the church goes into a commercial venture, it is obliged to pay tax on the profits of the income of that venture , it is irrelevant that the venture was entered into by an unincorporated arm of the church. If the church decides to go into business through an incorporated company owned by the church it will still be of the same effect it will probably make it even easier for the tax officials to trace. So, before you take up a tax crusade against the churches or anybody else for that matter, endeavour to be sure of your facts. Churches are expected to pay tax on their commercial concerns whether they actually do is another matter and anybody refuting the fact that they do will need to provide sufficient proof. This just goes to show the sad fact of the Nigerian mentality. Most times, people just go on condemning something without making sure of the facts. People if you are going to make a case for or against something, make sure your ing argument is solid! |

i think you should inform the girl's family first dont send them away cos the guard might just take off and abandon the girl if she's as young as you think she is then she needs assistance and the man has to tak eresponsibility for his carelessness

I always thought all the lyrics in love songs were corny lines, but seriously u know u are in love with someone when the person is the first thing on your mind when u wake up, and the last thing u think of before u fall asleep. You know you are helpless where someone else is concerned when u guys have a fight and it messes with your mind (even when it’s the other person that upset you), you cant eat and you are just so moody (then u blame it on being overworked!) You know you are nuts about someone when you get jealous (particularly if u are someone who is usually so independent and doesn’t normally give two flying farts about what someone is doing! I know this all sounds as corny as ever but it isn’t just what love songs are made of (even though I hate to it it), but believe me people it exists! See why I said being in love is lousy feeling? |
