Tension Rises in Enugu as Atakwu Akwuke Youths Allegedly Defy Supreme Court Ruling, Vandalize Property

A fresh wave of tension has erupted between two neighbouring Enugu communities—Etiti Ngwo and Umugwuakum Atakwu Akwuke—following the violent demolition of a residential-commercial building in a disputed area of land already adjudicated in favour of Etiti Ngwo by the Supreme Court.

In the recent attack, property worth millions of naira was destroyed by thugs allegedly sent by the people of Atakwu Akwuke.

Speaking to newsmen about the attack, Chief Onoh MC, Legal Advisor to the Etiti Ngwo community, decried the incident as a “clear case of criminal tres and malicious damage” by suspected youths from Atakwu Akwuke, who allegedly stormed the property of Mr. Uchenna Onoh on May 9, 2025, and razed it down—despite a standing Supreme Court judgment affirming Etiti Ngwo’s ownership of the land.

“This case dates back to 1989 when both communities went to court over land known as Agu Ovolo, Isiama and Ebemi land. Though Etiti Ngwo initially lost at the High Court, the Court of Appeal overturned that ruling in 2015, and the Supreme Court upheld it,” Chief Onoh said.

Chief Onoh traced the land dispute to as far back as 1989 when both communities took their grievances to court over land known as Agu Ovolo, Isiama and Ebemi land. While the High Court initially ruled in favour of Atakwu Akwuke, the decision was overturned by the Court of Appeal in 2015 and subsequently upheld by the Supreme Court.

"Following the court rulings, Etiti Ngwo took possession of the land as ordered by the Enugu State High Court. The community then distributed parcels to adult males, including my client Mr. Uche Nna Onoh," said Chief Onoh.

Despite this legal finality, youths from Atakwu Akwuke have allegedly continued to provoke tensions. According to Chief Onoh, "they have persistently incited individuals who purchased land from Atakwu Akwuke with defective titles, urging them to defy court orders. This has led to a series of violent acts, including arson, destruction of fences, and demolition of buildings belonging to Etiti Ngwo indigenes."

"On multiple occasions, houses have been burned and properties destroyed. The latest attack was the most alarming. A group of armed youths invaded my client's property, pulled down the gates, removed all doors, riddled the roof with bullets, and damaged everything inside. This occurred just days after we appeared in court with one of the claimants from Atakwu Akwuke, who attempted to seek an injunction against our client," Chief Onoh explained.

He added that the attack seemed coordinated and premeditated, coming shortly after the opposing party expressed displeasure in court over a preliminary objection filed by Etiti Ngwo's lawyers. "They threatened to take action, and just days later, they did. We have names of the individuals involved and trust that the law will soon catch up with them."

The incident has sparked concerns within Etiti Ngwo, whose are growing restless. "Our youths are angry, but we are urging them to remain calm and allow due process. This attack lasted over four hours, with gunshots heard throughout the night. Attempts to get the police to intervene were unsuccessful until the damage was done," said Chief Onoh.

Adding complexity to the matter is the alleged involvement of the Enugu State Boundary Commission and the Enugu State Geographic Information Service (ENGIS). Chief Onoh cited a court document where one of the Atakwu Akwuke litigants claimed that they were directed by the Boundary Commission to approach ENGIS for land registration.

"This is worrisome," said Chief Onoh. "Why is ENGIS ing lands in a legally resolved dispute area? The Boundary Commission has not released any white paper or report, yet they are allegedly directing registration. This creates confusion and undermines court verdicts."

Etiti Ngwo has therefore made two formal demands:

1. The Boundary Commission must immediately release the outcome of its findings on the land dispute, which has been pending since September 2024.
2. ENGIS should suspend all land registration activities within the disputed area until a formal directive is issued by the Boundary Commission.

Speaking on his ordeal, Mr. Uchenna Onoh, the owner of the destroyed property, described his plight as heartbreaking and financially ruinous.

"I am a civil servant with no other property. I refused to sell the land to a man who claimed to be a reverend father. I wanted to build something for my children’s future. I started constructing seven lock-up shops with residential space above. The structure was demolished three times. The third time, I had finished the entire building with borrowed funds. They destroyed everything—the roof, plumbing, aluminium works, doors, and even tiles. They broke and scattered a whole trailer-load of tiles meant for the building."

Mr. Onoh said he had reported to the police, community leaders, and his lawyer, and had engaged private security. "Still, they returned and ruined everything. Now I am in debt and trauma. I’m pleading with the government to step in and publish the boundary white paper to avert further escalation."

BOUNDARY COMMISSION REACTS

When ed, the secretary of Enugu State Boundary Commission, Dr. Ejim, told our correspondent that though they are aware of the disputed boundary, the report of their findings is not yet out, and when it is ready, all the parties involved will be made aware of it.

He also dismissed as totally false any claim by any of the parties that the report is in their favour, adding that only the Chairman of the Commission, who is the Deputy Governor of Enugu State, Barr. Ifeanyi Ossai, will release the report, but it's not yet out.

Dr. Ejim noted that the commission isn't aware of the renewed crisis in the area and assured of their commitment to entertain such a complaint if it's brought before them.

Enugu State Geographic Information Service (ENGIS) Remains Silent.

Efforts to get a reaction from ENGIS on the alleged ing of the same land for the people of Atakwu Akwuke proved abortive as they are yet to reply to a mail sent to the Managing Director of the Service.

The situation remains tense, and community leaders warn that failure to act quickly could result in broader conflict. "This matter has reached a boiling point," Chief Onoh emphasised. "The government must intervene now to prevent a full-blown communal crisis."

…Family of deceased devastated, calls for justice

Mr. Arinze Odo, a 24-year-old young man, is still reeling from the trauma of a horrific incident involving operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Enugu, which led to the death of his friend, Daniel Isiwu, and left him with a gunshot wound in the neck.

The tragic event occurred on Saturday, May 17, 2025, as Arinze and his two friends, Johnpaul Echezonachukwu and Daniel Isiwu, returned to their base in Emene after shopping at the Ogbete main market. What started as a routine outing turned deadly around 6:30 p.m., near a military checkpoint manned by Air Force personnel along Old Emene Road.

According to Johnpaul, who was driving their Mercedes Benz GLK, traffic had built up near the checkpoint. While deciding whether to wait or reroute via the express, a white Toyota Hilux van suddenly appeared at high speed and tried to double-cross their car. Panicked and unaware of who was in the vehicle, he attempted to move closer to the checkpoint, still over 200 meters away, for protection. But the van blocked them, forcing him to reverse. Then, a gunshot rang out.

Narrating the ordeal, Arinze, who was in the front enger seat, said:

“All I noticed was that someone with a gun jumped out of the car, and then there was this loud gunshot. I shouted ‘Jesus!’ as I felt a sharp pain behind the back of my neck. I touched it and felt something hard and hot lodged in there. In panic, I felt around it and managed to get a pinching hold on it and pulled. It came out, and I saw it was a bullet. I was like, I am hit! I am hit by a bullet! Then I felt the rush of blood flowing down my back, soaking my dress. I ed out.”

When he regained consciousness at the hospital, Arinze was devastated to learn that their 22-year-old friend, Daniel, who sat behind him, had died. The same bullet had torn through Daniel’s neck, ripped through the headrest, and lodged in the back of Arinze’s neck, narrowly missing his spine.

Daniel Isiwu hailed from Ohodo in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of Enugu State. He was an orphan and the elder of two siblings. Since 2012, he had been raised by his aunt, Mrs. Sabena Ojekoma, after the death of his father, Victor. He also cared for his younger sister, 15-year-old Rita Chidimma.

When Journalist101 visited the family, they were visibly distraught and in mourning. Mrs. Ojekoma, who raised Daniel as her own son, cried out for justice:

“The man who killed my son has not told us why he took his life at his prime. His father died young. Now we have lost him too. I have lost a son. The only offense Daniel and his friends committed was that they were young people in Nigeria driving a good car along the road. The world, Nigerians, please help me get justice for my son. That is all I ask for.”

Chidimma, Daniel’s younger sister and now the only surviving child of their late parents, wept as she tried to express her pain:

“Honestly, I don’t know. This is too much. Sir, the pain is just too much. All his plans and promises to me have gone like that. He didn’t joke with me as his only sister and sibling. I can’t describe who he was and what he meant to me. Sir, this pain is too much. At least our father was sick before he died. What did my brother do to the man who killed him? I am sure he has a son or at least a brother, too. How would he be feeling if it were his son or brother that someone shot dead like that?”

Eyewitnesses said that after the shooting, the NDLEA officers searched the vehicle and found nothing incriminating before fleeing the scene. The police later arrived and, with assistance from ersby, rushed Arinze to the hospital and took Daniel’s body to the mortuary.

When ed, the spokesperson of NDLEA, Enugu Command, Mrs. Calista Mmeka said they're investigating the matter to ascertain if their officers were involved in the shooting.

However, a police source told our correspondent that the NDLEA officers are currently detained at the Enugu State Police Criminal Investigation Department, where investigations are ongoing. The officer who allegedly pulled the trigger has also been singled out among them.

The grieving family now waits anxiously for justice. But will it come, or will this tragedy the list of unresolved cases of extrajudicial killings in Nigeria? Only time will tell.

We wish to make a formal clarification and tender an unreserved apology regarding an earlier report which inaccurately stated that Mr. Tochukwu Nzekwe, CEO of TOSHEL CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, was remanded in prison.

After a thorough review and confirmation from court documents now available to us, it has become clear that Mr. Nzekwe 'Toshel' was never remanded in prison on any charges. Rather, he was arraigned on what appears to be a trumped-up charge and was granted bail by the Chief Magistrate of Enugu North Magistrate Court, His Worship S.O. Chukwuani.

In a proactive move to foster peace and development within the community, the Enugu East Local Government Area has inaugurated the Enugu East Land Mediation Centre.

The initiative was formalised on Wednesday by the Executive Chairman, Engr. Pst. Beloved-Dan Obi Anike, who signed the bill into law during a ceremony attended by dignitaries and local officials.

"The establishment of this centre is crucial, especially given the rising significance of land as a vital asset globally," Chairman Anike stated. "With the influx of residents and investors into our urban area, we have seen a corresponding increase in land disputes that often escalate into lengthy court battles."

The newly established mediation centre aims to provide an alternative dispute resolution platform, allowing individuals to address land-related issues amicably without the need for court intervention.

"I am optimistic that this centre will significantly reduce land disputes, conserve our resources, and foster better relationships among our community ," Anike added.

During the event, Anike extended an open invitation to anyone experiencing land disputes to approach the centre for assistance, assuring them of a peaceful resolution process that would safeguard their investments.

Prominent figures at the inauguration included Justice Okey Anike of the Enugu State High Court, who praised the initiative, stating, "This mediation centre will serve as a beacon of hope for many who have felt trapped in protracted disputes."

In a harrowing narrative of betrayal and adversity, Anthony Amalu, the former personal assistant to Hon. Stainless Nwodo, has disclosed the personal sacrifices he made in of his friend’s political aspirations, only to find himself in dire financial straits.

Tony Amalu, recognised for his integrity and dedication, recounted how he forsook his family and a flourishing business in Abuja to galvanise grassroots for Nwodo, who ascended from a struggling estate agent to secure the Labour Party nomination for the House of Representatives seat for the Igbo-Etiti/Uzouwani Federal Constituency.

“I risked everything, my family, my business, and even my safety, to ensure Stainless Nwodo’s victory,” Amalu remarked. He sold his car, borrowed money, and organised fundraising initiatives, all while campaigning in a landscape riddled with insecurity.

Despite Nwodo’s eventual triumph, Amalu felt abandoned. Following the election, he devoted himself to establishing Nwodo’s relevance among his peers, forming a media team and linking him with influential figures. However, his efforts went unacknowledged.

The situation deteriorated when Nwodo became embroiled in a certificate forgery scandal. Amalu recalled, “He instructed some of us, his aides, to rally contractors to contribute funds for his court case, with the promise of constituency project contracts as compensation. We raised millions, but instead of using the money for the case, he diverted it to buy properties in Abuja.” After the court delivered a guilty verdict against Nwodo, Amalu found himself the target of disgruntled contractors demanding refunds.

Amalu's financial woes intensified when Nwodo sold a property for N137 million but refused to pay him the agreed 5% agency fee. “He threatened me instead, using his s in the police force. I became bankrupt, unable to cater to my family or pay my children’s school fees,” he lamented.

In his appeal for assistance, Amalu highlighted recent actions by Nwodo, including the sale of over 100 bags of rice donated for flood relief, conducted without consulting the affected constituents. He also expressed disillusionment over Nwodo’s failure to honour a promise to compensate him after receiving substantial funds for a contract with TETFUND, stating that instead of paying him, Nwodo boasted about his connections and issued threats.

Amalu is now seeking from well-meaning Nigerians, including prominent figures such as Chief Nnia Nwodo, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, and Governor Peter Mbah, as well as an investigation by the Inspector General of Police and other security agencies. “My life and business have been torn apart. Stainless Nwodo is relocating to Canada while I am in ruins,” he declared. Amalu's sole demand is for Nwodo to pay him the N6.5 million agency fee, which he hopes will enable him to rebuild his life.

Efforts to Hon. Nwodo for reactions on the issues raised by his former personal assistant were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to messages sent to his known mobile lines via WhatsApp and SMS.

The Enugu Capital Territory Development Authority (ECTDA) has categorically rejected reports claiming that the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (IC) 'grilled' its chairman regarding alleged financial misappropriation, labelling the assertions as false and a deliberate attempt to tarnish the agency's reputation.

ECTDA expressed its astonishment at the claims, stating that they had not received any correspondence to that effect. Sir Gideon Udo Onyia, Director and Head of istration of the agency, clarified that the IC had indeed ed their office, requesting for an officer of the agency and some documents.

Sir Onyia cited parts of a letter from the IC dated March 13, 2025, with the reference number IC/ENU/INV/038/Vol.1/2025, which he noted was explicit. The letter states: "The Commission wishes to inform you that the above referenced letters are yet to be complied with by your Authority and the Officer invited to come along with documents relevant to our investigation from your office also refused to attend to our legitimate invitation."

He further explained that the agency responded by instructing the commission to route their correspondence through the appropriate channel.

"Rather than doing that, the IC sent another letter on April 7, 2025, with reference number IC/ENU/INV/001/Vol2/2025, inviting our Chairman over complaints related to alleged violations of the Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Act, which is not what has been reported by those spreading false information.

"As a responsible organisation, we replied on April 9, stating: 'The said letter which was received after the close of official working hours on April 8, 2025, is by implication received officially “TODAY” April 9, 2025, the same date for appearing before your Commission for interview alongside other specified personnel outside our office. Obviously, it is very difficult to meet your invitation, considering your timeline.'

'However, this genre of invitation that concerns Government Officials, are to be channelled through the Secretary to the State Government (SSG), who will in turn initiate the appropriate processes that will lead to the release of the concerned Government official(s) along with relevant official documents as may be required by your Commission."

When approached for comments, the Chairman of ECTDA, Rt. Hon. Anya stated, "How could I have been grilled for almost 24 hours when I'm not under any form of investigation?"

He elaborated, "What happened was that the commission had written to our office stating they were investigating my office from 2019 to 2023 (prior to my appointment) and that they needed some documents from me as Chairman to facilitate their investigation. I wrote back, indicating that they should direct the letter through the appropriate authority, as we can not release government documents just like that. They responded, asserting their entitlement to collect any document or take action against anyone obstructing their investigation, claiming my failure to provide the documents amounted to obstruction.

"Following this, they sent another letter expressing their displeasure which amounts to obstructing their investigation, and this led to their invitation letter on April 7, to which my office responded accordingly."

Hon. Anya concluded by stating that in an effort to mitigate the tension arising from the exchanges, he opted to pay a courtesy visit to the management of the IC to assure them that they would comply with their requests, provided they followed the appropriate channel. He reiterated that the notion of being 'grilled' is unfounded.

Dr. Ben Nwoye, the former Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Enugu State, has announced his resignation from the party, attributing his decision to a significant breakdown in leadership and unity within the party at both the state and national levels.

In his resignation letter addressed to his Amurri ward chairman, Dr. Nwoye expressed his disappointment over what he described as the disintegration of the APC's leadership in Enugu State. He lamented, "The bunch of 'Broom' which we painstakingly tied together in 2013... has loosened and permanently scattered."

He further elaborated that efforts by party elders to restore unity had been unsuccessful, stating, "In its current form, further attempts to reassemble the 'Broom' in Enugu State is no longer practicable."

Dr. Nwoye highlighted the internal strife within the party, mentioning two factions led by individuals who claim chairmanship through conflicting means.

He noted, "One of the strong men claims Chairmanship by judicial pronouncement, while the other claims Chairmanship through arrogant disobedience of the same judicial pronouncement."

Criticising the leadership dynamics in the South East, Dr. Nwoye accused regional leaders of engaging in vindictive politics, stating, "They are not interested in adding another State to the two States the party controls in the South East." He added that the current leadership measures party supremacy by "how low they can go to oppress their perceived political enemies," which, according to him, is contrary to the core principles of the APC—justice, peace, and unity.

Dr. Ben Nwoye

He expressed frustration over the national leadership's inaction regarding the ongoing conflicts, saying, "The APC National Leadership has... allowed the warring factions to self-destruct and strangle the party in Enugu State." Dr. Nwoye also condemned the dismissal of calls for reconciliation from party elders, describing loyal as "political prisoners" in a "political war."

After extensive consultations with his grassroots ers, Dr. Nwoye concluded that it was time to move on, declaring, "I am not a political prisoner. I have never been and I can never be." He also pointed out that the situation in Enugu State reflects broader issues within the party across the South East, mentioning the sidelining of prominent figures such as Senator Chris Ngige and Dr. Ikechi Emenike.

Dr. Nwoye who didn't announce ing any new party stated that, "It is time to move on and discover a new frontier."

Maduka University, located in Ekwegbe, Enugu State, has successfully upheld the standards it established in 2024, as evidenced by the matriculation of 664 students during its second Matriculation ceremony held on Friday, April 11, 2025.

In the previous academic session of 2023/2024, Maduka University set a remarkable precedent by matriculating over 600 students, marking a first for a new private university in Nigeria.

At the ceremony, held in the university's stadium, the Chancellor and Founder, Dr. Samuel Maduka Onyishi, stated: "Maduka University remains a highpoint of the pact I made with God on the occasion of my 50th birthday to alter my society significantly and in a positive way..."

Dr. Onyishi elaborated that in alignment with their motto, '...The place for the transformation you seek', all courses offered at the university "explore the realities of training deficits in our educational institutions. These realities fuel our enthusiasm and commitment in ing other well-intentioned individuals and groups to think through the processes of creating value-based education. Incidentally, this is the type of education that rides on the wings of entrepreneurship, which is our focus."

Expressing his pride in the university's reception from students, parents, and the wider community, Dr. Onyishi acknowledged the growth rate as a reflection of their commitment to quality education.

In a message of congratulations to the new students, he wished them success in their academic endeavours and extended gratitude to the parents, sponsors, and partners for their faith in the institution.

The Vice Chancellor, Prof. Charles Ogbulogo, emphasised their "intentional" approach to providing learner-centric perspectives in their programmes and lectures to meet students' needs and aspirations, stating: "We engage quality teachers with rich enthusiastic, interactive and transformative learning experiences."

Prof. Ogbulogo further highlighted that their courses across the College of Medicine and six schools of health sciences, nursing, pharmacy, law, business and social sciences, engineering, and computing "have continued to enjoy the kind consideration of the National Universities Commission," adding, "We have never commenced any programme without due authorisation."

He continued, asserting that the university "would easily qualify as one of the fastest growing private universities in Nigeria. It is gratifying that in our first one year and five months, we have been blessed with close to 1300 students. These figures testify to the acceptance of our brand of education at the tertiary level."

During his address, the Matriculation lecturer, Chief John-Nnia Nwodo, the former President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide, commended the Chancellor and his team for the "unprecedented speed, with which you have driven the development of this university," adding that "the speed with which this development was accomplished is phenomenal."

Expressing concern over the declining quality of education in the country, Chief Nwodo lamented: “It pains me that children of our contemporaries in the university cannot get the quality education that we received during our time.”

He recalled his experiences at the University of Ibadan, noting that "the taps ran 24 hours and showers had cold and hot taps. They ran all day and night,” and mentioned the existence of an air-conditioned room in the hostel for entertaining guests with refreshments.

He further remarked that the university laundry washed ten items of clothing for each student every week, with subsidised food prices: “Breakfast was 20 kobo, lunch and dinner were 25 kobo, respectively.”

Chief Nwodo also reminisced about the university's transport system, stating, “The university buses left from the Main Campus to the Teaching Hospital Campus every 30 minutes, carrying students and staff who had lectures.”

He added that they had “departmental libraries as well as a Central Library,” where any book published in Europe or America was available within a month of publication, and that "we hardly experienced any power failure in the three years I spent in Ibadan."

He concluded by saying, “It pains me so much that you, as our children, cannot get the quality of education we, your parents, got, but those of you in Maduka University are privileged. You have good buildings, power and water supply, and lecturers hungry and anxious to teach in an institution with facilities.”

In their goodwill messages, the Governor of Enugu State, Dr. Peter Mbah, represented by the Commissioner for Environment; the President-General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief John Azuka-Mbata; the Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Sen. Mohammed Daggash; and a representative of the JAMB Registrar all congratulated the students and urged them to remain focused and pursue academic excellence by taking their lectures seriously.

On Thursday, the Ebonyi State High Court mandated the release of 12 of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), who had been incarcerated since May 24, 2021.

Barrister Ifeanyi Ejiofor, the lawyer representing IPOB, disclosed this information in a statement released following the court's decision, stating that the individuals freed are part of a larger group of 36 IPOB ers arrested nearly four years ago.

Ejiofor pointed out that despite numerous court rulings over the years that discharged and acquitted them of all charges, the detainees had remained in custody until the ruling on Thursday.

The decision came after a formal application was submitted by the Ebonyi State Director of Public Prosecution (DPP).

He mentioned that the DPP acknowledged the series of judicial decisions and formally withdrew the most recent charges against the 12 detainees, which effectively concluded their protracted incarceration.

According to Ejiofor, the court's directive was executed promptly, and the individuals were released in compliance with the ruling.

“It marked a long-overdue respect for the rule of law and a reaffirmation of their innocence, which courts had upheld time and again,” he remarked.

Ejiofor further emphasised that the legal team remains dedicated to securing the release of the remaining IPOB , who, he asserted, have also been acquitted by no fewer than four separate High Courts in Ebonyi State.

“Their release is no longer a matter of if but when, and that moment draws closer by the day,” he concluded.

The fully solar-powered and remodelled Mother of Mercy Hospital in Ihe-Shikeaguma, Awgu Local Government Area, has transformed medical services not only to the residents of Ihe town but also to nearby communities.

The hospital's rehabilitation, which cost over N300 million, was led by the Ihe Development Initiative (IDI), a group composed of local entrepreneurs, academics, and servicemen. The facility was officially commissioned on 29th December 2024.

Commenting on the state of the hospital 90 days after IDI's intervention, Rev. Fr. Michael Nwankwo, the of Mother of Mercy Hospital, stated that the people of Ihe are pleased because the facility has undergone a significant transformation and “can now compete with hospitals even in urban areas.”

“With the upgrade, the services we provide have improved, and we are now better equipped to respond to emergency situations. We have acquired a ventilator — a rarity in most hospitals — and our laboratory is now better equipped to conduct a wider range of routine tests and more.”

Father Nwankwo noted that the hospital now serves not just the people of Ihe; residents from distant communities, such as Agbo-ogwugwu, Ugbo, and Amoli, are also seeking medical care here. “The response has been remarkable, and we have become a healthcare provider for numerous nearby communities.”

Resident doctor Dr. Echem Michael remarked that following the hospital’s upgrade, both staff and patients are experiencing a transformed environment, with improved conditions for delivering healthcare.

“It was challenging to work here before due to poor infrastructure. Today, the facilities are a source of pride. We have better equipment, increased access to medications, improved beds, oxygen cylinders and their components, as well as enhanced staffing levels, resulting in a higher patient turnout.”

“For expectant mothers, we now offer suitable facilities for delivery, and the modern beds and equipment have made a significant difference. Today, I have my own office for consultations, unlike in the past when they were conducted in open wards.”

“Previously, our living quarters were inadequate, but now we have a much-improved structure, and we’ve resolved our water issues. Commuting to work has become straightforward; we enjoy constant electricity, and the welcoming community makes our work seamless.”

Scientist Okoro Juliet Ijeoma, a laboratory technician at the hospital, explained that it is equipped to perform tests including Packed Cell Volume (PCV), Culture Tests, Urine Microscopy, Culture and Sensitivity (MSC), and Stool Microscopy among other procedures.

She also noted that while some additional equipment is still awaited, the hospital currently possesses a microscope, microhematocrit and macrohematocrit centrifuges, an incubator, and many other essential tools.

One patient, Mrs. Anastasia Ukamaka Nweke from Agbo-ogwugwu, expressed her satisfaction with the services she is receiving and was astonished by the extent of transformation in the hospital. She added,

“The hospital has saved me the hassle and expense of going to UNTH, which would have been my only option had this facility not undergone such a transformation.”

She extended her gratitude to the IDI responsible for the hospital's rehabilitation and prayed for continued blessings upon them.

Another patient, Hyginus Okafor from Owelle Court, commended the care he received, noting that the doctors and nurses are diligent in their duties. He urged the management to maintain the current standards of care and prayed for blessings upon them and the of IDI.

Nwankwo Daniel Nnamdi from Ughueze Village in Ihe Town expressed his pride in the hospital's achievements, stating, “When you enter the hospital and see the facilities, you realise how much our community has accomplished in remodelling it, which has greatly contributed to saving lives in Ihe and surrounding areas.”

He thanked the of the Ihe Development Initiative who made this possible and encouraged other affluent member of the community to continue ing such commendable initiatives.

Established in 1976 by the Catholic Diocese of Enugu with from the late H.R.H. Igwe Dennis Nweke Chukwu (Igwe Denchukwu), the former Traditional Ruler of Ihe-Shikeaguma, the hospital is now managed by the Catholic Diocese of Awgu, which was formed from the Catholic Diocese of Enugu.

In the light of the trending report linking Enugu Commissioner of Police, Kanayo Uzuegbu to an alleged N62m bribe, JOURNALIST101 is in possession of documents and video pointing otherwise.

The reports had claimed that Enugu State Police Command extorted N62m from a businessman, one Olu Agwu Mang, a native of Abiriba in Abia State, which he paid into disguised bank s in two tranches. The allegations added that the sum was meant to conceal some high-profile individuals linked with ESN.

JOURNALIST101 gathered that the matter was strictly a business between two brothers or friends gone sour and they involved the police and the two tranches of

The money allegedly paid to the police in two tranches according to the earlier report was made to the of the the complainant’s witness as contained in the document obtained by our correspondent.

According to a written agreement, with video evidence, dated 27th of December 2024, between Mr Olu Agwu, the defendant, of Harmony Estate, off Lambasa, Aja, Lagos, and Mr Michel Umeh of No 4, Town School, Emene, Enugu, Agwu agreed to pay N100m to Umeh, being debt owed him in the cause of a business they entered into.

The document showed that the parties agreed that N30m be paid to Mr Umeh through Ike Onwuka Chinedu part payment, while the remaining N70m be paid to him within one month.

The agreement read in part, “That upon completion and/or payment of the N100m, his Toyota Hilux with Reg No. EKY 955 JM impounded by the police in the cause of the arrest of Olu Agwu be released on bond to him.

“That Mr Umeh or his agents, cronies and/or friend or business partners shall not reopen this case in any anti-graft agency, hence these of settlement are the final settlement of this case.

“That the N30m was paid into the UBA of Ike Onwuka Chinedu with no 2317939457. That Mr Michael Umeh hereby acknowledged the receipt of N30m today the 27th day of December, 2024.”

Our correspondent reports that Umeh and Olu Agwu signed accordingly with Chinedu Onwuka and Bob Okite as their respective witnesses.

Similarly, Barr Emeka Abah, the counsel for the suspect, Olu Agwu, in an interview, described the allegations against Uzuegbu and the police authorities as ‘frivolous’.

The lawyer said, “The allegations are unfounded, frivolous, annoying and vexatious. The police didn’t come into the picture of the payment made in connection with this matter. The police were a kind of alternative dispute resolution medium. They are still investigating the matter. After the investigation and they find out that this Olu has a hand in funding or using ESN or IPOB to threaten the Mr. Michael Umeh and other allegations, they will take it up.”

Abah explained that he never knew the suspect before, but was called by a colleague of his to take up the matter. He said, “Agwu was arrested in December 2024. When I got to the police and interrogated him, the police said they could grant him istrative bail, pending further investigation. They however restrained him from collecting his vehicle, for the allegation that it was a proceed of crime.”

On the veracity of Agwu's claims against the , Abah said, “I wouldn’t know what Agwu is up to. Maybe he wants to intimidate the police with media attacks.”

Abah explained the financial dealings that transpired which formed the nexus of the allegations, including that his own was used to settle the police. Quoting him, “My number was not used to courier money to the police or on their behalf. I came across it on the social media. I was dazed. The brief was on 26th December, 2024 while I was in the village. The suspect was detained at Anti-Kidnap Unit, Enugu.

“We agreed on , which they settled as my professional fee. A tranche of the money being circulated is my professional fee. The second tranche, N30m, paid to another , was part payment of the contentious money Agwu owed Mr Umeh. Police gave Agwu access to me as his lawyer, and I solicited for his bail one-to-one. I don't know where the allegations are coming from and I won't take it."

“The complainant had accused Agwu of sponsoring IPOB/ESN activities. Agwu rather told me that he and Michael Umeh had a deal, and the sharing formula was the problem. The complainant however said part of the money is what he, Agwu, used to sponsor IPOB. That was the complainant’s words against the accused. My own duty is to do my work as a lawyer. My client told me he wants the matter to end at the police. Already his vehicle was seized as proceeds of the funds.”

Former Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Moses Jitoboh, has ed away.

Jitoboh, a retired Deputy Inspector General of Police from Bayelsa state, served as ADC to Jonathan during his tenure as Vice President under the late President Umaru Yar’Adua from 2007 to 2010.

According to renowned journalist Jackson Udeh, the former police chief died today at Garki General Hospital in Abuja due to blood clots in his lungs.

Mr. Jitoboh's career in the police force came to an abrupt end following his compulsory retirement after the appointment of the current Inspector General of Police. He subsequently approached the National Industrial Court in Abuja, alleging that he had been forced out of the Nigeria Police Force (NPF).

In his court filing, Jitoboh claimed he was compulsorily retired by the Police Service Commission (PSC) despite not having reached the mandatory retirement age of 60 or having served the required 35 years.

The land-grabbing allegations against the Minister of Innovation, Science and Technology, Chief Uche Nnaji, took a dramatic turn over the weekend as Hon. Okechukwu Mbah, the Member representing Nkanu East State constituency in the Enugu State House of Assembly, raised significant concerns regarding the purported Federal Government project, which he insisted is a new attempt to seize their land.

It’s important to note that the Enugu State government had responded to an imminent threat by halting the controversial construction of a Biomass-Based Methanol Plant, initiated by the Energy Commission of Nigeria in the state.

Speaking to reporters in his office, Mbah questioned the legitimacy of the project, stating that a multi-billion-naira venture, as claimed by the Minister, cannot be executed in such a manner. He pointed out that this is the same land that the Minister had previously attempted to acquire under the guise of establishing a rice factory. “When that failed and after he (Nnaji) became a minister, he returned to the land with a supposed federal government project, all in an effort to take over our people’s land, which has long been a point of contention between the Amagunze community in Nkanu East LGA and the Akpugo community in Nkanu West LGA,” he asserted.

The lawmaker expressed further suspicion regarding Minister Nnaji's failure to notify either the Enugu State Government or any local councils in Nkanu East or Nkanu West about the project.

He questioned why the project, located on Amagunze land, was labelled as belonging to the Akpugo community on the signboard, despite the clear map delineating the land’s location.

“According to the Land Use Act of 1978, all land is vested in the hands of the governors to manage. How can a project of this scale—reportedly worth 40 billion naira—be cited without the state and local governments being informed? We expect proper engagement with various levels of government for a project of this nature.

“This project is anticipated to generate by-products, necessitating an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA). Where is this report? These essential steps have not been taken.”

Hon. Mbah insisted that Chief Nnaji owes them an explanation about the situation, as all evidence suggests there is no federal government project worth 40 billion naira on their land. While emphasising that they welcome federal government projects in their community, he insisted such initiatives must be conducted properly and through the appropriate channels.

The lawmaker appealed to President Bola Tinubu to intervene, investigating why a project purportedly located in Nkanu East at the Amagunze local government council headquarters was labelled as situated in Nkanu West LGA. He conveyed to the president, “The people of Nkanu East would be glad to have any project from the federal government, and we have ample land available for donation.”

Mbah concluded by urging the state government to swiftly utilise the state Boundary Committee to address the dispute between the two communities, thereby resolving the larger issue between Nkanu East and West concerning the ownership of the land.
