As for Liverpool I think this would have been a good move considering how much he's still held in high regard by the fans.
He's a fan favorite at Anfield and that would have given him a bit of leeway if the results weren't going to plan.

My personal thoughts is he already has an agreement with Madrid like the rumours circulated a while back.
And contrary to what some might say I think if Bayer Leverkusen can keep their core players like Wirtz and co, they would still be in a strong position next season.
