petengine: You better know what you are talking about Mr. I am not a student, I left the scene over 8 years ago, and it was lies like these that made friends and colleagues to do above and beyond to secure good grades. Today my skills pay me more than grades, and I am not self employed either. What I tell every student is this... No matter the grade you come out with, focus 110% on skills, develop your soft skills, develop your IT skills, develop your networking skills, information is power not grades. I currently have two recruiters on my trail on LinkedIn, one from UAE the other from South Africa, neither is asking me for skills, I have even had a phone interview with one of them, and the focus was on my abilities not my skills. A fresh graduate with skills will get a job faster than the one with just his result be it a 2.1 or 2.2 My advice to those who have gotten poor results at 200 level or 300 level is simple, don't ever make the mistake of going back to write JAMB, that's the worst mistake you'll ever make. Dig deep, search yourself, find out what you love and develop your skills in that niche, better still if your course is technical in nature, use your holidays to learn the practical side of it, become good at it, then watch how things will change. I believe by now I have enough experience to know that it's never about what you come out with, it's always about what you can do. Ignore this at your own risk, self development is always the answer. I have friends who came out with 2.1 but they don't earn half my salary, and these are guys earning above 100k already. It's never by your certificate, study the industry you belong or aspire to enter, know what works and start working towards that goal. 5 Likes 1 Share |

Lexusgs430: I still don't get the features that makes Windows 10 an UPGRADE, at best it's an UPDATE with new fancy themes. Personally, Microsoft needs to go back to the drawing board, the idea of rushing out an OS every few years on a platform like Windows is just not working. Many people felt Microsoft will get it right with Windows 10, but I don't think it has lived up to the hype. Honestly I have no hate for Windows 10, but performance is the main thing for me. Over 600 updates in just over two months ![]() ![]() Anyways one man's meat is another man's poison, but I doubt if many peaople share your enthusiasm for Windows 10 1 Like |

AltarBoy1: This is the misconception that makes Nigerian universities produce 2.1 that can't defend their results. We need to seriously remove this focus on class and grades. We need to focus more on skills and abilities. Sorry, 2.1 don't put food on your table, skills do. I can cofidently tell you that no one will employ you because you had a 2.1 or first class. Quote me anywhere. ![]() ![]() 1 Like 1 Share |

Lexusgs430: Please enumerate the UPGRADE, and don't mention the UI, that doesn't count abeg. What third party app will solve the low RAM issues. I use a core i5 2.6ghz Intel 4th generation U I don't do heavy graphics as my work is basically remote tech . I don't have any games installed. The battery issues, I won't even bother talking about that. In my humble opinion, Windows 10 should have remained in BETA for quite a while, before assulting our senses with their collosal failure. It seems the higher they go, the worse it becomes. I just see Windows 10 as a failed attempt at developing a closed system like Apple, which will never work. I like the UI, but the performance leaves too much to be desired. Hopefully in 2yrs from now, Windows 10 will finally be an upgrade, for now it's still fancy for someone like me. I UPGRADED back to windows 7 with speed. Someone should please tell Microsoft that we don't need fancy, we need performance period. 2 Likes |

Lexusgs430: If I have to third party apps to use an OS, then my friend that's not an upgrade, Microsoft goofed on this one. Maybe when they finally fix the issues they have, we can call it an upgrade. Again, the only thing that was upgraded was the UI, in of functionality, please they have work to do, before you can call Windows 10 an upgrade. I don't know what or how long you use your system, but if you use it like I do, then you need a PC that actually performs at 90% efficiency, and that includes a top tier OS, on extreme Hardware. and did I mention that Windows 10 was giving low memory error, on 6GB RAM ![]() ![]() ![]() Please Windows 7, and have peace of mind. 1 Like |

Good topic, but without taking anything from Microsoft, Windows 10 is crap. Microsoft's attempt at developing a closed system will just not work. Myself and my colleagues actually made it a point of note to upgrade on the very first day it was released. I allowed Microsoft do the update as my system was using genuine Windows. Everything was perfect until a few days When I couldn't save files in my document folder anymore. Yeah I took ownership and then I could save the files, but I Was pissed because if Microsoft expected me to start changing everything on my OS just to use it, i'd rather go back to 7. I upgraded to windows 7 after ten 10 days of using windows 10. Microsoft needs to get things right. Personallu Microsoft should just release a seperate OS for touch enabled PC etc, while the UI was really sweet, the bugs, compatibility issues and infringement on personal privacy just makes it a really big miss. If they continue like this, I just might be tempted to finally switch to Mac. OSX 4 Likes 2 Shares |

The man is a learner. Sadly this practice happens mostly in churches. Make one wife try that with one guy man, she Go know say Khaki nor be leather. Women who do that are still kids at heart. Men don't need excuses to cheat, so if you give them a chance be rest assured they won't it up. Later they be crying that the devil entered their husband, meanwhile they are the devil that started the fire. |

I would love to school some prospective corp about what to expect and all but I can't on this device, maybe when i hop on my laptop. The relevance of NYSC will be lost when you forget the word SERVICE, which happens to be what the scheme is all about. I understand the frustrations, I get the anger, but sorry to say, if your time in NYSC is a waste, it's your fault. 1. NYSC is not compulsory, just refuse to go, it's not a criminal offense to turn it down. A friend refused to serve, it has not stopped him from making it in the IT industry. 2. Apart from areas with security challenges, you should be able to make something out of that one year. Something as simple as learning another culture will help broaden your thinking scope, enjoying your time with the community is more important than making money. 3. Knowledge acquired during that one year has continuously put money in my bank . It's up to you how you spend that one year, but if you end up wasting it, then it's your fault and not that of the FG. Youths need to start taking responsibiity for their time, try seeing the cup as half filled everything is all about perspective. Finally it's not the same way you see traffic that the gala or Lacasera seller sees it. 1 Like |

LaurelP: Finally no one will even tell you about non salary benefits untill they make their initial offer. Which is already past the interview stage. Am afraid your post doesn't really have a target audience. Young graduates will read this and try it at interviews, only to be disappointed. As someone who has been interviewed and also interviewed others, I advice one thing... Put the value the company will add to you first if you are a fresh graduate, but if you've got some experience, then show the company the value you bring to the table, you will be paid according to your worth. 1 Like |

shut: Good question. Two factors actually. 1. Immaturity: Yea, this was a major blunder on my part, I got into the university at 19, at a time where the average age for gaining ission was between 20 - 24. I felt it was still like the secondary school system where I could just listen to my teachers and grab everything they said, then read a few days to the exams and with flying colours. Out here it was a different ball game entirely. Lecturers won't come to class, and when they eventually did, some couldn't even their message accross properly, yes, that's the system of education in most Nigerian schools. I was not prepared for this method of learning, I needed to adjust very fast, but I couldn't. Long hours of reading was never my thing, so it was a struggle in my first 2 years. Again I never understood the trick behind using past questions to study, I never did even when preparing for WAEC/NECO I just followed the syllabus or class notes. At university level, you can actually study just past questions and come out with good grades, sad but true. 2. Wrong Course: Maybe just maybe if I had done computer science instead of mechanical engineering, my ion would have driven me beyond my abilities, but alas, I was in mechanical engineering because I wanted to work for an oil company. Well that ain't happening any time soon, and besides I would rather work for Microsoft than Chevron any day. What I did I changed my mindset about the system. The system was not made for me... I needed to adjust to the system, I started learning how things really worked, past questions became my new textbooks, and even if nothing changed, at least my result actually changed. year 3 4 5 was enough to give me a 2.1, but with a terrible 100level, and not too good 200level, 3rd Class was the only thing I could manage out. With plenty of Abeg. At this point I just wanted out of the system, I really didn't care what I came out with. I had 2 extra years, yes, 2 extra years. When I graduated, I did a lot of self motivation, because if you hear the way companies carry on about 2.1, you would think that it was the end of the world to achieve that feat. Most of my family friends quickly used that as a criteria not to offer help, but I ignored them altogether. At this point I realised that only God can help me if I really wanted to live my dreams. I started by defining what I wanted to do, already I knew I had a ion for computers, so that will be my ticket out... I learnt everything I could on Windows, within a short while I could troubleshoot hardware and software issues like a pro. I used professional simulators to learn as fast as I could, yet no onw would hire me as a computer engineer because I didnt have certs, well, I wanted to get them but the money was not there. Anyway I continued doing what I love while managing a job by the side. Now if you see my CV, you won't believe that I had a 3rd Class. Thanks to God's divine favour, I saw a job that needed my computer skills with a reputable software organisation, I applied, went through personality tests, instead of the 2.1 screening criteria that our lazy Nigerian HR and companies are used to. I ed, today I get paid in USD. So simply put, take responsibilities for your failure, and you'll find a way out. I could have blamed my lecturers, blamed the system, or even blamed my parents for not being able to afford the kind of schools I was used to at secondary level, but I realised early enough that success is a choice, failure is also a choice. Finally always that failure is usually a catalyst to become better if you choose to see it that way. Find what you love to do, and follow it with all your heart.. it will open more doors for you that any Grade can and ever will. Got to get back to work. Hope you got the inspiration you need. 6 Likes 4 Shares |

It's simple really. Students don't take responsibility for their performance or studies anymore. After leaving the university with a 3rd Class, I had to sit down and tell myself the truth. Yes I had never been a dull student Yes I had an excellent track record at primary and secondary school I went back and saw why and how I failed, I knew where I made mistakes... Moving forward I made adjustments, today I work with an international organisation, and I never had to present my degree ![]() If you can't track why you failed, how will you ever become successful? ![]() ![]() 20 Likes 1 Share |

I beg to differ a bit. Truthfully, I don't advice people to play with their studies, but as someone who has been in operations, and staff management roles for a while, I have sometimes found it difficult to come to with the rationale behind 2.1 as a criteria. For me, it doesn't really matter at what point you decide to sit up and become useful to yourself, the most important thing is you can get up and get things done when I need them done. This write-up has nothing to do with being dull, rather it's more about putting round pegs in round holes. This will become a trend that will pick up with time. I know guys who can write great code, but have never been in the four walls of a university talkless of getting great grades, and if you think programming is a joke, try build a website from scratch. We have this stereotypical way of thinking as Nigerians that never really helps us. We don't seem to be able to change from what isn't working to trying new methods. The days of using degree class as criteria is fizzling out, in the future, expect to do personality tests, time based assesment and skills test. With the internet penetration level, it therefore means that technology can be involved more in screening candidates, which means that recruiters don't need to bother much ing class of degree to narrow down selection of candidates. They just need to open the pool to everyone, and test them wether 2.1 2.2 or 3rd class against the same criteria, and may the best man always win. So for me it's simple really, don't feel entitled because you got great grades, if your only achievement 5yrs after leaving school is a 2.1 trust me, i'll pick a 3rd class who has put in effort in improving himself over the years any day. On the job, ability is all that matters, and I will say with all confidence, it has absolutely nothing to do with grades. Success is personal, at any time if you take your eyes off the goal you will miss it. So because you missed it in school doesn't mean you should keep paying for it all your life. I know guys who wrote Waec 3 times, but went to school to make a 2.1 So why shouldn't someone who got a 3rd class fight for the same opportunity with a 2.1 If you're good, you're good. It's got nothing to do with your class of degree, that's the whole point. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

I have always maintained that rather than use degree to judge candidates, recruiters should involve technology more in their process. Below is an excerpt you should read, very soon gone will be the days where you go to school get a 2.1, with no real skills to back it up. Developing your self is the best assurance in a volatile job market. Ernst and Young drops degree classification threshold for graduate recruitment BY LINDA ONUEKWA · One of the UK’s biggest graduate recruiters is to remove degree classification from the entry criteria for its hiring programmes, having found “no evidence” that success at university was correlated with achievement in professional qualifications. ancy firm Ernst and Young, known as EY, will no longer require students to have a 2:1 degree and the equivalent of three B grades at A level to be considered for its graduate programmes. Instead, the company will use numerical tests and online “strength” assessments to assess the potential of applicants. Maggie Stilwell, EY’s managing partner for talent, said the changes would “open up opportunities for talented individuals regardless of their background and provide greater access to the profession”.
