The solar-powered tricycle built by 18-year-old Abdul Basit Qazim has been introduced to the streets of Lagos, marking a significant step in Nigeria’s efforts to address fuel scarcity.

Developed by Abdul Basit, a secondary school graduate, the tricycle was successfully test-driven on the busy streets of Lagos, receiving enthusiastic approval from onlookers and showcasing the potential for innovative solutions in the face of ongoing economic challenges.

Earlier reports from Starnews NG highlighted that Abdul Basit, under the mentorship of his father, Mr Fola Qazim Oredeko, an expert in innovative design systems, channelled his ion for engineering into this eco-friendly project.

Inspired by the daily struggles of his community, where rising fuel costs and environmental degradation are common concerns, Abdul set out to create a sustainable mode of transportation aimed at reducing the burden on households while contributing to a greener future.

“Solar-powered vehicles can help reduce dependency on fossil fuels, lower transportation costs, and create employment opportunities,” Abdul remarked, stressing the wider impact of his invention.

The tricycle is fitted with high-efficiency solar s and a lithium-ion battery, enabling it to reach speeds of up to 30 km/h and cover distances of up to 200 kilometres on a single charge. It has a load capacity of 800 kilograms and can carry up to six engers alongside cargo.

The introduction of this solar-powered tricycle comes at a crucial time as Nigeria grapples with economic difficulties following the removal of fuel subsidies.

Abdul Basit’s initiative offers a timely solution, providing a clean and efficient alternative to petrol-powered vehicles while contributing to the nation’s environmental goals. The tricycle emits no harmful pollutants, making it a practical option for reducing carbon emissions.

In response to concerns about the practicality of solar power in Nigeria’s often cloudy weather, Abdul reassured s that the solar operates effectively with minimal sunlight, requiring only a ray of light to charge. He also noted that the tricycle’s battery can function for up to five hours without being connected to the solar .

Abdul called for government for innovations like his, stressing the need for investment in renewable energy solutions that promote sustainability and alleviate financial pressure on citizens.

He believes that fostering the production and distribution of solar-powered tricycles could stimulate job creation within the local economy, contributing to Nigeria’s sustainable development.

He described the youths as the productive force of a nation that must be given undivided attention and a platform for self discovery and empowerment; which are powerful tools in nation building and socio-economic development of any society.

"as a youth, I wanted to use my gift to help other youths. My organisation is into car and home security but the covid-19 pandemic made us to look inwards and come up with this innovation which I believe will go a long way in winning the fight against the spread of the corona virus in the state.

"as a result of this I wanted the NYSC, which is the largest graduate youth organisation in the country to be a beneficiary of our ingenuity and creativity" he said.

The automatic disinfection tunnel which is fully automatic comes with an automatic sanitizer and thermometer that sanitizes and detects the body temperature. The tunnel which is also energy saving is further equipped with ultraviolet light that kills virus within 5 seconds and is also human friendly and disinfects a person from head to toe within 6 seconds. He further explained that the tunnel uses hydrogen peroxide as one of its chemical constituents in disinfecting as it is safe and very effective in killing viruses and bacteria. He posited that the device is maintenance free and very safe to use.

While receiving the donation at the Permanent Orientation Camp, Ede, the state coordinator, Mr Ayodele Adegoke who was represented by the Assistant Director Press and Public Relations Unit, Mrs Funmi Okundaye appreciated the gesture of the organisation which she described as noble and notable.

"your gesture has indeed added another beautiful laurel to the many laurels possessed by the scheme in the state. The state recently got a very high rating from the NCDC when it came to inspect and ascertain the level of preparation for the reopening of camp in the state. NCDC described the camp as the best and now with the automatic disinfection tunnel, I want to say the state is good to go.

"You have made the scheme in the state to stand out this day as the first state to have the automatic disinfectant tunnel. I am sure, the Director-General and the management of the scheme will be highly elated to know that we still have organisations like ZAT-Direct which believes in what the scheme is doing and are ready to go all the way in ensuring the safety and welfare of the corps "

"The presence of the disinfectant tunnel will ensure that we win in the fight against the pandemic and we are also assured of the safety of camp participants in the state" she said.

The Assistant Director, Deployment and Relocation, Mr Lawal Taofik; the Zonal Inspector of Ikirun Zone and Head of Clinic for the forthcoming orientation, Mr Abiona Abiodun and other of staff were in attendance.
