The Good Governance Advocates (GGA) has commended President Bola Tinubu for working tirelessly to drive the nation’s digital economy, fostering innovation, and bridging the digital divide.

The group also applauded the Minister of Communications and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani and Dr Aminu Maida for keying into the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda by developing a vibrant digital ecosystem, empowering entrepreneurs, and creating jobs for our teeming youth.

The group also acknowledged the achievements of the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) under the visionary leadership of Maida in regulating and developing the Nigerian telecommunications industry.

The GGA made this known on Thursday at a press conference to assess President Bola Tinubu’s first anniversary.

In his address, the convener Comrade Mahmoud Abubakar, said the Ministry has witnessed unprecedented growth and transformation, showing an unwavering commitment to harnessing the power of technology to drive economic growth and development.

According to Abubakar, Maida has shown unwavering dedication to creating an enabling environment for innovation, competition, and growth which has contributed to the country's economic growth and social progress.

“The Good Governance Advocates agree with the position of the Honourable Minister that digital literacy means something other than that you have become a technical talent. However, it gives you the foundation to choose that you also want to participate in the digital economy,” Abubakar said.

“This is brilliant because digital literacy skills help individuals understand the importance of securing their online information and the potential cyber-attack risks. It also enables individuals to use tools to secure their digital assets.

“We must also it that social media is integral to our lives today. Digital literacy skills are essential for using it safely and responsibly as they enable individuals to identify potential risks associated with social media, such as cyberbullying, identity theft, and phishing attacks. It also helps individuals to understand the importance of protecting their personal information on social media platforms.

“Notably, the federal government projects that 90% of Nigerians should be digitally literate by 2030. The steps taken in this direction are commendable and in line with the Renewed Hope Agenda of the Bola Ahmed Tinubu's istration.

“The Nigerian Communications Commission's activities also come in handy in re-positioning the telecoms sector for optimal productivity. The Executive Vice Chairman of the NCC, Dr Aminu Maida, has also displayed a grasp of the issues in the industry and his policy initiative and drive have been commendable.

“The Good Governance Advocates recognizes the efforts of the NCC in promoting indigenous content in the telecommunications sector. This is in line with the provisions of the Nigerian Communications Act (NCA) 2003, which empowers the NCC to encourage local and foreign investments in the Nigerian communications industry, introduce innovative services and practices as well as promote the participation of Nigerians in the ownership, control and management of communications companies and development of communications manufacturing and supply sectors.

“Also worthy of mention are the efforts to position Nigeria as a significant player in the global technology landscape by establishing the Nigerian Digital Technology Exchange Programme Hub (Nigeria Startup House) in San Francisco, United States of America.

“Notably, the Nigerian Startup House will play a critical role in promoting Nigeria's economic interest, attracting Foreign Direct Investment and improving the visibility and positioning of Nigeria's Startup Ecosystem to attract funding and expertise from global markets and organizations.

“The San Francisco Bay Area is recognized globally as a significant source of startup ecosystem funding, with a combined GDP value of over $929 billion. It is home to over 200 of the largest companies in the world by revenue.

“The Good Governance Advocates also recognizes the gigantic step taken with establishing a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) to facilitate the delivery of 90,000km of fibre-optic cable, complementing Nigeria's existing connectivity infrastructure to deliver a more robust national backbone for universal access to the internet.

“The efforts to build Nigeria's technical talent backbone are instructive. The 3 Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme aims to power our digital economy and position Nigeria as a net talent exporter. It will generate a pipeline of technical talent in line with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's vision of creating 2 million digital jobs by 2025.

“May we state that this is indeed the game changer in our quest for developing talents as the strategic focus of the 3MTT is on Software Development, UI/UX Design, Data Analysis & Visualization, Quality Assurance, Product Management, Data Science, Animation, AI / Machine Learning, Cybersecurity, Game Development, and Cloud Computing.

He said before its take over by his istration, the Federal Road Maintenance Agency (FERMA) had carried out palliatives on the road, which was still in a terrible state, forcing motorists to find alternative routes.

The governor said, “This road starts from Ikorodu. It is connected to Lagos and es through Sagamu to Iperu to Ibadan to the rest of the country.

“Before we constructed this road, it used to take about seven hours to get to Ibadan from Lagos. But now, you can travel from Lagos to Ikorodu to Ogijo to Sagamu in less than 50 minutes.”

He said the contract for the construction of the road was awarded in three phases to ensure quality job, adding that with the two phases completed, the third phase has been awarded, and the contractor mobilised to site.

Governor Abiodun emphasized that providing infrastructure is in line with his istration’s transport master plan, which is aimed at increasing the ease of doing business, which in turn would create jobs and reduce crime in the long run.

The governor disclosed that the Gateway International Agro-Cargo Airport has been licenced to commence non scheduled flight operations, while that of scheduled flight is expected to be approved soon.

The governor also hinted that the construction of the Kajola Dry Port would soon be flagged off to further boost the infrastructural development of the State.

Kwara: Ensuring Credibility, Transparency, and Inclusivity; An In-Depth Discussion on the LGA Election

By Muideen Adebayo Ibrahim (MAI)

The purpose of this germane write up is to ensure that the forthcoming Local Government Election slated to September 21, 2024 is credible, transparent, fair and all inclusive so that we can have a virile and egalitarian grassroots in Kwara State.

The State government was applauded for deeming it fit to flag off the LG election after various stakeholders agitated for it including yours truly.

As a result, all eyes are now on the State government to ensure that the election is held as promised. Not only that, it must be very transparent, credible and all inclusive as well.

The importance of a transparent, credible and all inclusive Local Government (LG) election cannot be overemphasized and some of which are; vital for ensuring democracy's integrity. Uphold citizens' trust in the electoral process, foster political stability, and promote inclusivity by allowing all eligible voices to be heard. Without these elements, democracy's foundation becomes fragile, risking legitimacy and societal harmony. Not only that, it will affect the grassroots in all ramifications.

Without prejudice, there must be fairness on the part of Kwara State Independent Electoral Commission (KWASIEC). The modalities for the conduct of the election must be properly crafted and made available in all the local languages. Not only that, there must be proper information dissemination from time to time. The process must be fair and unbiased.

KWASIEC must as a matter of fact prevent electoral fraud and malpractices as much as possible. The electoral hnpire must in this instance up its game in this regard in order to be above board.

What steps are being taken to the eligibility of voters and candidates? This is very key and must as a matter of time be critically looked into.

All hands must be on deck in order to ensure that the voter's is accurate and up-to-date? Nobody must be disenfranchised.

Transparent Procedures; KWASIEC should endeavour to elaborate on the steps being taken to ensure transparency in the election process. This must be made open for creditability sake please.

How will the results be communicated to the public?

KWASIEC must ensure that the results are communicated to the public real time on time. As such, information communication technology (ICT) must be deployed in this regard.

The roles of independent observers and monitors are very important. So credible independent observers and monitors should be invited for the forthcoming LG election. Because they will play critical roles, make their reports public and this will add a lot of value to the credibility or otherwise of the said election.

Whilst not preempting KWASIEC for a free, fair, transparent and credible election, the necessary machineries should be put in place for Kwarans to report any irregularities they witness during the election whilst prompt and necessary action must be taken to that effect by KWASIEC.

All Kwarans must be encouraged to participate in the election as much as possible. So there should be enlightenment campaigns and information dissemination from now on.

The umpire should please
address potential barriers to voting for people with disabilities, women, and youths so that no one would be disenfranchised.

Community Engagement across board is very important and KWASIEC should put necessary machinery in motion with respect to this. Community leaders, various political parties and civil society organizations should be included in this regard as well.

Cybersecurity initiative; what measures are in place to protect the election from cyber threats? How is voter data being safeguarded? There questions are very critical and as a result, KWASIEC must employ the services of credible cybersecurity experts in order to forestall any unpalatable story.

It is an established fact that the Chairmanship Aspirants are too numerous and only Sixteen of them would be chosen out of the multitude. All of them should play by the rules, they should campaign on issues and what they will offer the people at the grassroots. They should avoid campaign of culmuny so that the election can be peaceful. Kwarans will decide and they should endeavour to vote. The success of the forthcoming elections lies with all the stakeholders. So let's ensure that the election is free, fair, credible, transparent, all inclusive and devoid of any malpractice. So all hands must be on deck.

Long Live Kwara State!

Emirate tussles: Count NSA out of your drama- APC Chieftain warns Kano Politicians

By Tom Garba, Yola

Tracereporters --The unimaginable drama from the reinstatement of Mallam Sanusi Lamido Sanusi III who was dethroned from being the Emir of Kano State is turning into something else according to a Chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

Hon Abdullahi Abubakar Kwacham took a wipe lashes against some politicians who are dragging the name of Mallam Nuhu Ribadu, the national security adviser (NSA) to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to have a hand on whatever is going on in Kano.

He said Nuhu is having a national interest not a Kano interest to make sure the entire nation is secure and every citizen is protected according to the provision of the law, he can't stoop low over what he said the stakeholders are capable of resolving whatever is the difference.

Kwacham blasted those accusing the NSA of fuel the traditional stool drama as his political enemies that want to drag his name to the mud over what he has less interest on.

He lampooned those concern to have Make sure Kano State is secure and the Emirate Peaceful irrespective of who becomes the Emir not to have brought into the State shame that will outlived their generation yet unborn.

He said the open show of disgrace has stained the respectable Kano Emirate by desecrating the throne to a mere place of drama.

He advised Kano government and the the Emirate king makers to tow the path of peace that will unite the waring families.

According to him both Sanusi and Bayero are apparent sons to the throne, with both blood of royalty running through their veins. And nothing can be more better than the royal Brother to unite in the interest of peace.

"They are Brothers, the politicians should not find their throne struggles another means of settling their scores or political differences.

"For dragging Nuhu Ribadu into their Family fight who is not even from Kano talk more of being part of their family blood line is what I can't never accept.

"Count NSA out of your open show of disgrace and figure out your issues by resolving it yourself. No one can do this for you, and don't allow politician to make mockery of the throne that has Long history of good transitions." Kwacham Said

Kwacham who granted a phone interview draw the attention of Kano Emirate that Nigerians and the entire world are indeed watching how the needless drama will unfold itself.

He however said their feign allegations will never discourage the NSA from doing his best to ensure that insecurity of whatever type come to a final bus stop in the country.

He said Nuhu is working and called on Nigerians to give him more and ignore those who are politicizing the Kano Emirate struggles for primordial sentiments.

The APC Man said they are doing that for their political selfish reasons not the collective interest of Kano State indigenes or Nigerians.

He commended the Tinubu led istration for working the paths of reviving the country's economy.

As preparations for the 2024 governorship election in Edo State gather momentum, more chieftains have resigned from the All Progressives Congress in the state, an investigation by Saturday PUNCH has shown.

Recall that a former Commissioner for Communication and Orientation in the state, Andrew Emwanta, resigned from the party in February, saying his decision stemmed from the party’s lack of internal democracy, which he said, reflected in the governorship primaries it conducted in the state.

In a letter to the Ward Chairman, Ward 7, Egor Local Government Area of the state, Emwanta said, “I am writing to formally tender my resignation from the hip of the All Progressives Congress, effective from today, the 18th day of February 2024.

“My decision to resign from the party stems from its lack of internal democracy, flowing from the flawed process of the just concluded Edo governorship primaries. It has left me with no confidence in the party’s leadership structure and sense of political ethos.

Also, a former governorship aspirant of the party in the state, Dr Victoria Amu, earlier this month resigned her hip of the party for “personal and family reasons.”

In her resignation letter addressed to Ward 4 chairman of the party in Owan West Local Government Area of the state, Amu said, “I thank the party for finding me worthy to have been given the opportunity to serve as SSA on Social Mobilization for seven years under Comrade Adams Oshiomhole and SSA to Governor Godwin Obaseki for one year.

“It is on record that I ran for the House of Assembly in 2022 and also in the just concluded Governorship race in 2024, all under APC. I crave the indulgence of all my friends, ers, and well-wishers to respect my decision at this auspicious moment to redefine the destiny of our great state.”

However, four chieftains resigned from the APC in the state on Monday, May 20, 2024, premising their resignations on the way and manner the affairs of the party had been conducted since the conclusion of its governorship primaries in the state.

In his resignation letter addressed to the chairman of APC Ehor Ward I in Uhunmwonde Local Government Area of the state, one of the four chieftains, who recently resigned, Mr Felix Alari, said, “I, Alari Felix, write to inform you of my decision to resign my hip of the All Progressives Congress effective immediately.

“This decision has been necessitated by the way and manner the affairs of the party have been conducted especially in matters of the party the primaries and other sundry issues. Having been in this party from its inception, and having endeavored over the years to work hard within the party framework to help build a virile political party, it has however become clear to me that this party has lost focus and has largely deviated from its core values.

“Edo State APC today is a highly disorganised political party operated by myopic and egoistic mediocre who have little or no regard whatsoever for intellects and party loyalty, and democratic principles. Please, do accept this letter as formal notice of my resignation,” he added.

Another chieftain, who also resigned from the party on Monday, John Uhunwangho, in his letter addressed to the APC ward chairman in Urhonigbe South Orhionmwon Local Government Area of the state, said, “I wish to humbly inform you of my resignation from the All Progressive Congress (APC) with effect from today the 20th day of May 2024.

“My resignation is as a result of the failure of leadership of the party to unite the party and lack of cohesion of the party which is leading the party to disaster in the gubernatorial election in the State.”

In his resignation letter addressed to the APC ward chairman in Urhonigbe North Orhionmwon LGA of the state, a chieftain of the party, Chief Wilson Ogieva Urhonigbe, said, “I wish to humbly inform you of my resignation from the All Progressives Congress (APC) with effect from today the 20th day of May 2024.

“My resignation is as a result of the failure of leadership of the party to unite the party and lack of cohesion of the party which is leading the party to disaster in the gubernatorial election in the State.”

The fourth person who also resigned from the party on Monday, Mr Sunday lyamu, in his letter addressed to the APC ward chairman in Urhonigbe South Orhionmwon LGA, said, “I wish to humbly inform you of my resignation from the All Progressive Congress (APC) with effect from today the 20th day of May 2024.

“My resignation is as a result of the failure of leadership of the party to unite the party and lack of cohesion of the party which is leading the party to disaster in the gubernatorial election in the State.”
