By Deborah Sanusi Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun State has expressed concern over a reported death sentence of a young man in the state for stealing a fowl. In a statement on X.com on Tuesday, Adeleke directed the state’s attorney general and commissioner for justice to launch a full investigation into the case and initiate processes to grant the young man a prerogative of mercy. He wrote, “I have received the report of a case of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun State for stealing a fowl. “Consequently, I have directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Osun State, to commence a full investigation into the matter and initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man. “Osun is a land of justice and equity and must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives. I assure of the public that this matter is receiving my direct attention with every sense of urgency also attached to our response to the matter.” The case, which has attracted widespread attention, reportedly involved a young man who was reportedly arrested in 2010 and sentenced to death by hanging in 2014 after being convicted of stealing a fowl. The incident has raised questions about the severity of the punishment for what many consider a relatively minor offence. #Uncle_Olu_ commenting on the governor’s statement, wrote on X.com, “Imagine a country where someone spent 14 years in jail and was sentenced to death by hanging because he stole fowl. Fowl… but someone who stole over N80b was just given a N500m fine.” #Sholisea also tweeted on X, “Sentencing someone to death because he stole a fowl is the height of it in this country.” Some others pointed out that theft itself does not warrant a death sentence unless there are additional elements, such as the use of weapons, making it qualify as armed robbery. Sharing a news report of the case in 2014, #TheYemiKing wrote on X, “Even if you steal ₦20 and you carry a knife, it’s armed robbery. The case is from 2014. The judge must give a death sentence, as that’s what the law says. “But the judge recommended that the governor can commute the death sentence. Why didn’t Aregbe?” #egi_nupe wrote, “No court will sentence you to death for stealing a fowl. Stealing is not a death sentence. However, if the man is harmed with either a knife, gun, iron rod, machete, or gun while stealing, that’s armed robbery, and it’s a death sentence if found guilty.”

By Olusola Babarinsa In a surprising ission, Tony Mwaba Kazadi, the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s Minister of Primary, Secondary and Technical Education, acknowledged having an unplanned pregnancy with Aminata Namasia. Yet he said it was an accident at work. In spite of the fact that they were both married, Namasia is claimed to have fallen in love with Kazadi after being appointed as the National Deputy Minister of Primary, Secondary, and Technical Education in Jean-Michel Sama Lukonde’s cabinet on April 12, 2021. Namasia, however, was cited by a local newspaper, The Street Journal, as having refuted the story on her Twitter page, claiming that outside of her official and public duties, she has a life that must be respected by all; a right, she claimed, that is guaranteed to all Congolese by their constitution. She argued that damaging her reputation shouldn’t be a practice that was condoned because it could jeopardise not only her relationships but also the reputations of her married male coworkers and their houses. She said: “On the eve of the electoral contests scheduled for December of this year, political detractors can attack my opinions and political actions rather than opting for practices tending to smear my person.” The tale was debunked by “a reliable Congolese” named Nugandu, who was quoted in The Street Journal, and claimed that it was all a part of the DRC’s political theatre. source:https://punchng.com/education-minister-impregnates-deputy-claims-its-an-accident/

(CNN)Former world heavyweight champion Leon Spinks, best known for defeating Muhammad Ali in 1978, has died at the age 67, according to a statement from his publicist. Spinks lost his five-year battle with prostate and other cancers on Friday evening. "At the time of his ing his wife Brenda Glur Spinks was by his side. Due to Covid restrictions, only a few close friends and other family were present," the statement read. Born in St. Louis, Missouri, Spinks represented the United States during the 1976 Olympics in Montreal, Canada, as a light heavyweight and won a gold medal. He faced Muhammad Ali in Las Vegas, Nevada, on February 15, 1978, winning to become the undisputed heavyweight boxing champion. It was only Spinks' eighth professional bout and one of the greatest upsets in boxing history. Spinks and Ali met again seven months later at the Superdome in New Orleans. Ali won and reclaimed the heavyweight title. Spinks retired in 1995 with a 26-17-3 record with 14 knockouts. In 2017, he was inducted into the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame. He was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2019. He was hospitalized in December that year after the cancer spread to his bladder. The publicist's statement continued with, "Leon fought his battle with numerous illnesses resiliently, never losing his trademark smile. Showing true Spinks determination, he never threw in the towel."

WASHINGTON (AP) — Secret Service agents rushed President Donald Trump to a White House bunker on Friday night as hundreds of protesters gathered outside the executive mansion, some of them throwing rocks and tugging at police barricades. Trump spent nearly an hour in the bunker, which was designed for use in emergencies like terrorist attacks, according to a Republican close to the White House who was not authorized to publicly discuss private matters and spoke on condition of anonymity. The was confirmed by an istration official who also spoke on condition of anonymity. The abrupt decision by the agents underscored the rattled mood inside the White House, where the chants from protesters in Lafayette Park could be heard all weekend and Secret Service agents and law enforcement officers struggled to contain the crowds. Friday's protests were triggered by the death of George Floyd, a black man who died after he was pinned at the neck by a white Minneapolis police officer. The demonstrations in Washington turned violent and appeared to catch officers by surprise. They sparked one of the highest alerts on the White House complex since the Sept. 11 attacks in 2001 . “The White House does not comment on security protocols and decisions,” said White House spokesman Judd Deere. The Secret Service said it does not discuss the means and methods of its protective operations. The president's move to the bunker was first reported by The New York Times. Michael Jordan was offered $100 million to appear at an event for two hours. He said no, his agent says. (CNN)NBA superstar Michael Jordan may have retired years ago, but his off-court appeal remains as strong as ever. The former Chicago Bulls star has largely stayed out of the limelight since he walked away from basketball nearly two decades ago. So much so, he once turned down a jaw-dropping amount of money for a two-hour appearance at an event, his former agent said this week. David Falk appeared on WFAN's "Boomer and Gio," where he discussed how picky his famous client was when it came to projects. "I brought him a deal three years ago for $100 million. All he had to do was, other than giving his name and likeness, make a one two-hour appearance to announce the deal and he turned it down," Falk said Wednesday, without providing any additional details on the deal. "God bless him. He's been so successful, it gives him an opportunity to do whatever the hell he wants or not to do things he doesn't want. I really ire that. He's very, very selective in the things he wants to be involved in." Jordan made headlines last month after his documentary "The Last Dance" was released. The ESPN series premiered on April 19 and will air on Sunday nights over five weeks through May 17. The 1990s Chicago Bulls, led by Jordan, remains one of the greatest dynasties in sports history. The ESPN series features never-before-seen footage from the 1997-98 season, along with interviews from a star-studded cast. source: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/05/01/sport/michael-jordan-100-million-spt-trnd/index.html 2 Likes |

(CNN)Africa's ailing presidents and powerful elites have been known to jet out to seek treatment abroad, instead of investing in healthcare in their own countries. Zimbabwe's Robert Mugabe died in a hospital in Singapore, and Cameroon's Paul Biya regularly seeks treatment abroad. Nigeria's President Muhammadu Buhari was out of the country for several months in 2017 for treatment in London for an undisclosed illness and has frequent checks abroad. Since he took office in 2015, he has embarked on at least four medical trips to the UK. But with flights grounded and countries across the world on lockdown in the wake of the coronavirus pandemic, these leaders are getting a wake-up call that they must fix their healthcare systems. The President of the Commonwealth Medical Association, Osahon Enabulele, says while citizens have endured their leaders' frequent recourse to overseas medical treatment in the past, they may not remain so tolerant if the coronavirus wreaks havoc as it has elsewhere in the world. "There is no place for any leader to hide anymore," Enabulele said. "This whole situation of public office holders in Africa, most times using taxpayers' money to go on foreign medical trips at the slightest discomfort is one thing that will be reversed when this pandemic is over," Enabulele told CNN. A terrifying prospect Infection numbers across the continent, while significantly lower than other parts of the world, are rising exponentially. The World Health Organization recently reported that the number of cases in Africa was now more than 11,000, with 600 deaths. The pandemic has overwhelmed advanced health facilities, and experts predict it could devastate the continent's fragile health systems, already plagued by inadequate funding and labor disputes. Lifesaving machines like ventilators -- critical to the management of Covid-19 cases -- remain a luxury in some African countries. The Central African Republic (CAR) has only three ventilators to five million people, the Norwegian Refugee Council (NRC) said, warning that an outbreak could bring the tiny African nation to its knees. "When rich nations are in panic mode stating that thousands of ventilators will not be enough, it just brings to light how poorer nations like CAR don't stand a chance in the fight against Covid-19," NRC Country Director in the CAR, David Manan said. source: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/04/10/africa/african-leaders-healthcare-coronavirus-intl/index.html 1 Like 1 Share |

(CNN) — There are people who can sleep anywhere, any time, in any position -- including upright in an economy-class airplane seat. And then there are the rest of us. Neck pillows just don't cut it. Reclining a few inches does nothing. We need to lie flat, which is what makes Air New Zealand's prototype sleep pods so exciting. On February 26, the airline filed patent and trademark applications for the "Economy Skynest" -- the result of three years of research, development and testing based on input from more than 200 customers at a hanger in Auckland. First, the specs. According to Air New Zealand's announcement, the Skynest will consist of six full-length lie-flat sleep pods in the Economy cabin. The exact location within the aircraft is yet to be confirmed. Each pod will be about 200 centimeters (6.5 feet) long and 58 centimeters (22 inches) wide, and come with a pillow, sheets, blanket, ear plugs and privacy curtains. The airline is reportedly also exploring additional features such as reading lights and USB outlets. "A clear pain point for economy travelers on long-haul flights is the inability to stretch out," says Air New Zealand chief marketing and customer officer Mike Tod in a statement from the airline. "The development of the Economy Skynest is a direct response to that challenge." So will the Skynest actually take flight? There's reason to be hopeful. After all, this is the airline that's already proved its commitment to making economy class more comfortable, given so many of its flights are long-haul. It launched the "Economy Skycouch" in 2011, allowing engers traveling together to transform their seats into a bed. Staff from Air New Zealand tell CNN Travel no formal certification application is in process yet, "however we have designed the concept to meet all regulatory requirements." As for pricing, the airline is yet to determine the costs and is still assessing the commercial proposition and product viability. But given there are only six pods on one aircraft, they will likely be in high demand. "We see a future flying experience where an economy-class customer on long-haul flights would be able to book the Economy Skynest in addition to their Economy seat, get some quality rest and arrive at their destination ready to go," says Nikki Goodman, general manager of Air New Zealand's Customer Experience. The airline will reportedly make a final decision on the Economy Skynest in 2021, once it has assessed the performance of its inaugural year of Auckland-New York operations, due to take flight in October this year. That flight will take an estimated 17 hours and 40 minutes one way, making it one of the longest in the world. (CNN)The Trump istration will implement a new policy Friday to make it more difficult for foreign nationals to travel to give birth on US soil to ensure their children become American citizens, a practice commonly known as "birth tourism." The new rules will be effective January 24, according to a State Department cable obtained by CNN, which was sent on Wednesday to embassies around the world. The White House announced Thursday that the State Department "will no longer issue temporary visitor (B-1/B-2) visas to aliens seeking to enter the United States for 'birth tourism.'" Consular officers were told they can't directly ask a woman if they are pregnant, according to the cable. "You must not ask a visa applicant whether they are pregnant unless you have a specific articulable reason to believe they may be pregnant and planning to give birth in the United States. You should document any such reason in your case notes," reads the cable. "You must not, as a matter of course, ask all female applicants (or any specific sub-sets of applicants) whether they are pregnant or intend to become pregnant." Visitors to the US will be denied temporary visas if it's found that the "primary purpose" of travel is for obtaining US citizenship for a child by giving birth in the US, according to an amended State Department regulation to be published Friday. CNN reported earlier this week that this policy was expected to be announced soon. A State Department official told CNN that the rule change is intended to address the national security and law enforcement risks. According to the rule, the State Department does "not believe that visiting the US for the primary purpose of obtaining U.S. citizenship" for a child "is a legitimate activity." The rule is specific to "B nonimmigrant" visas, which are obtained for temporary visitors for business or tourism. Additionally, the regulation requires that visa applicants who seek medical treatment in the US must demonstrate their arrangements for treatment and establish their ability to pay all associated costs. source: https://edition.cnn.com/2020/01/23/politics/us-new-rules-restricting-travel-fearing-birth-tourism/index.html |

A Colorado Springs bank robbery got a Christmas spin. Around noon on Monday, police said that an older man threatened a bank with the use of a weapon. But he took a page from another man with a white beard, according to a witness. "He robbed the bank, came out, threw the money all over the place,'" Dion Pascale told CNN KKTV. "He started throwing money out of the bag and then said, 'Merry Christmas!'" Bystanders gathered the scattered cash and returned it to the bank teller as the suspect walked next door to the Starbucks and waited for the police, Pascale said. The suspect, identified as David Wayne Oliver, was taken into custody at the coffee shop, police said. It is unclear if Oliver has representation. (CNN) — It looks like something straight out of a James Bond movie, but this concept might just signal that the future of superyachts is sub-aquatic. Dreamed up by Italian-based naval architect Elena Nappi, the hybrid vessel can travel on both the surface of the sea and underwater. Known as the "Carapace," it submerges to a depth of 985 feet for up to 10 days at a time, offering amazing views of marine life. Nappi, who came up with the innovative concept after years of nautical experimentation research, says it represents a "new class of mega yachts," bringing together the cosiness of luxury yachts and the "privacy" of immersion navigation. A collection of luxury supercars seized from the extravagant vice president of Equatorial Guinea as part of a corruption probe were auctioned in Switzerland on Sunday. The sale -- organized by London-based auction house Bonhams -- saw 25 vehicles sold that once belonged to Teodoro Nguema Obiang Mangue, the son of the central African nation's longtime leader. Swiss authorities confiscated the luxury stash of vehicles from Obiang in 2016 after an investigation into money laundering. All the cars were sold without a reserve price and none had racked up more than just a few thousand miles Among the set was a roadster version of the Lamborghini Veneno -- one of just nine produced to celebrate the manufacturer's 50th anniversary -- sold for an eye-watering $8.3 million. It was originally estimated to be worth more than $5.1 million. A limited edition LaFerrari was also auctioned for $2.2 million, while a 1,300-horsepower Koenigsegg One:1 -- of which just seven were ever produced -- fetched $4.6 million, double what what was expected. Also in the collection was a McLaren P1 which sold for $1.1 million, an Aston Martin One-77 sold for $1.5 million and a Bugatti Veyron auctioned for $1.3 million. All of the cars were "sold on behalf of the State of Geneva and the proceeds are going to charity," Bonhams said in an email to CNN. Classic Ferrari 288 GTO worth over $2 million stolen on test drive Geneva police seized the fleet from a cargo area in the city's airport in 2016 after criminal proceedings were opened against Obiang. As reported by Reuters, Swiss prosecutors announced in February that they had closed an inquiry into Obiang for money-laundering and misappropriation of public assets with the arrangement to sell the vehicles to fund programs in Equatorial Guinea. According to the Swiss penal code, prosecutors can drop charges in instances like this if defendants offer compensation "and restores a situation that is in conformity with the law," Agence -Presse reported. Obiang's expensive tastes have been the subject of probes by authorities in several countries. He was handed a three-year suspended jail term for embezzlement by a French court in 2017, for splurging on a Parisian mansion, a private jet and the fleet of luxury cars with funds looted from his country. Marcello Gandini's radical automotive designs Before that, Obiang agreed to a $30 million settlement to resolve the US government's allegations that he used money plundered from his country to amass assets such as a California mansion, a jet and a sizable collection of Michael Jackson memorabilia -- including the crystal-encrusted white glove from Jackson's "Bad" world tour. And last year, Brazilian authorities seized more than $16 million in cash and luxury watches from a delegation traveling with Obiang, according to local media reports. His father, Equatorial Guinea President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo, who seized power in a 1979 coup, is the longest-serving head of state on the continent. He appointed his son as his deputy in 2016. The oil-rich country, one of the wealthiest in Africa, keeps a tight lid on information. For several years, anti-corruption NGO Transparency International described Equatorial Guinea as "too opaque to rank," saying it could not get enough data on it for the global corruption index.
