IamaNigerianGuy:I agree with some of the points raised. However, the struggle for increment in salary and allowances has been on for decades, with no end in sight. There are hustles we can do that won't necessarily affect the quality of care you give to your patients. I know of colleagues who have side hustles and are the best when caring for their patient. |

One of the most surprising reasons qualified candidates do not hear back from an employer is that they are overqualified. The first time I came across this phenomenon was when a friend of mine told me her uncle had been out of work for two months and counting despite his decorated CV. I personally found this baffling. Surely the more qualified a candidate is, the better, right? Apparently, that was an idealistic notion on my part, for there are a few reasons why employers are reluctant to hire someone who is overqualified for a position. The thing about overqualified applicants is that hiring managers can usually spot them right away. And, when a hiring manager receives an application from someone whose qualifications go way beyond the requirements of the position, it raises a red flag in their mind. The manager may wonder, “Why does this person want this job?” or “Can we afford to hire them?” The issue is that when employers see an overqualified candidate, they have the impression that the applicant is using this job opportunity as a temporary gig until a better paying, more senior position opens up elsewhere. They might also figure that the candidate will request a huge sum of money. However, looking too good on paper to a hiring manager is not the end of the world. Whether you are an intern or a senior-level director, having abundant experience should be an advantage to the employer instead of a negative point. What you need to do is tell the right story and convince the employer that you are not settling for a job below your experience level just to kill time. With the below tactics, you can overcome your ‘overqualified’ status, find and get that job. 1. Be Humble Humility is royalty without a crown. When someone says you are overqualified, it is a compliment. Be careful not to unintentionally exude arrogance or self-importance and resist the temptation to flaunt your extra degrees. The qualifications you might think make you more than qualified for the role may be irrelevant to that particular hiring manager. At the end of the day, the company wants someone who is a good fit for the role. If the hiring manager happens to point to your over-qualification, be humble and sincere. Acknowledge that you might have more experience than what they are looking for, but express how excited you are about the company and the role. You should also mention that you are looking forward to contributing to the best of your abilities. Make it unquestionably clear that you have their best interests in mind. You should aim to outline in full what you intend to bring to the table and how that will benefit the organization, while being careful not to give off a condescending impression. Do your research on the company, demonstrate that you understand the problems they might be facing and present solutions. When applying for a job below your career off, you want to exude the wide-eyed curiosity of a lower level employee with the seasoned skills of someone who has been in the business for a while. 2. Tweak Your CV At the first glance, an employer will think a candidate with your level of experience might consider some of the tasks associated with the position to be beneath them. If you are in a supervisory role, a subtle way to tackle this preconception is to take on tasks you might otherwise assign to others and list them on your CV. By doing that, prospective employers will see that those responsibilities are not ‘beneath you’ as they previously may have thought. Of course, you should also be honest with yourself about why you want this role and whether or not you really will be able to do these tasks without complaint. If not, you might want to consider holding out for a job more at your level or look for one with responsibilities you would not be as reluctant to handle. 3. Be Flexible This is probably one of the most difficult tactics to commit to, but sometimes in order to get a position you are overqualified for, you will have to be willing to make some sacrifices. One can question the fairness of it all, but the reality of it is that you will be going up against other candidates. Candidates who may be less qualified than you are, but will settle for lower pay. You need to be flexible with your salary as it might encourage the employer to overlook your over-qualification and consider you for the role. Without doubt, you can always check Bayt.com Salaries and get a clearer idea of what compensation to expect for each different position. 4. Make Your Cover Letter Your Mouthpiece In order to get the job, you will have to convince the employer that you are here for the long run. Whether you actually are or not is irrelevant. You will still need to persuasively assert that your interest in the job is not solely for its potential as a temporary fix to an unemployment situation. Use your cover letter to express your reasons for wanting this particular job and make a case for how this role will give you experience and put you in a favourable position in the progression of your career. 5. Sell the Advantages Think about what your years of experience can bring to the position you are applying for, even if employers do not explicitly ask you to discuss it. Instead of viewing yourself as “overqualified”, start seeing yourself as a highly qualified professional whose experience will bring something extra to offer the company. Assert that you are perfectly capable of handling the job in question and that your extra qualifications and skills mean that you will be able to assume additional responsibilities in less time than it would take them to hire someone else for the role. Lastly, keep the faith. A positive attitude brings about positive outcomes. Continue trying your best and waste no time in applying for as many jobs as possible. Mynd44:Really ![]() For every doctor you see on the street, they have a life outside their profession and yearn to make ends meet like any other person. The main hustle is stress, but of what use is an hustle that cannot sustain you? The same principle of financial survival to create multiple streams of income applies equally to doctors. 3 Likes |
![]() |
Let’s face it: being a doctor is great, but the job doesn’t always meet all of our needs. Sometimes we need a little something more – whether that be a hobby, time with family, or, yes, even money. Enter the side hustle. A side hustle is simply a way to make an income apart from your primary job. Let me tell you, physicians are jumping on this idea in droves, and it’s not just because they want to be rich. Trust me, if getting rich was our primary goal, we wouldn’t have gone into medicine. There are some deeper things at play here, especially the concept of physician burnout. Unfortunately, I’m not the best equipped to handle that discussion. I’ll leave that to Nisha Mehta, M.D. I’ve highlighted physicians who have done everything from starting their own YouTube channels to starting their own companies. For some of these doctors, the side hustle has become a significant source of revenue. (In fact, Nisha Mehta, Pamela Starnes and I have helped build a nice community around the concept. If you’re a physician, consider ing the Physician Side Gigs Facebook Group to learn, , have fun, or just dream.) But while money is an important part of the concept, there are other reasons a side hustle might be right for you. So here are five of those reasons, starting with the obvious: 1) Make more money When it comes down to it, everybody likes the idea of having a little extra income. Besides providing a safeguard against unforeseen expenses, a side hustle may help you take that dream trip you’ve always wanted, or perhaps help put your kids through college. And if you doubt how significant the income from a side hustle can be, just talk to the White Coat Investor or Physician on Fire. Again, check out some of the True Doctor Stories. There are many people who have matched or even exceeded their physician incomes through what can be considered side hustles. 2) Hedge against the unknown We all know medicine is changing. We’re constantly at the mercy of regulatory changes and insurance carriers who often dictate the timing and amount of reimbursement. Some physicians are seeing reimbursement cuts by as much as 10-20% from year to year. Of course, the biggest worry is losing your job altogether. And if you think doctors have full job security, ask any anesthesiologist whose group got bought out by Sheridan (bought by Amsurg). One day you’re in, the next you might be out. In the face of all that uncertainty, wouldn’t a little extra security be nice? Not only can a side hustle provide more financial security for yourself and your family, it can greatly reduce your daily stress, just by knowing you could make it if the worst happens. 3) Provide an outlet for your ions I think I can safely say that most of us became physicians because we’re ionate about it. I don’t think any one profession can define our ions in full. Sometimes we have itches that practicing medicine just doesn’t scratch. Some love to be creative otherwise through writing, art, or music, while others love to start businesses. Whatever your ions are, wouldn’t it be nice to have an additional pursuit that happens to bring in a little extra income. 4) Allows for more enjoyment in your day job No doubt you’ve heard that variety is the spice of life. Sometimes it can be nice to flex different muscles. Having other pursuits and ions, especially those that can produce some sort of income, is extremely gratifying. But I’ve noticed it also makes me appreciate being a doctor in some other ways as well. With another outlet for my interests and other sources of income, my profession as a doctor goes from near obligation to another ion to pursue. 5) Gives more freedom… and happiness One of the greatest benefits of having a side hustle is simply the ability to choose what you do with your time. Happiness can sometimes be a very elusive state of mind, but I think a huge part of it is feeling like you have choices. Personally, it’s changed my outlook on my job, and myself and my family are better off for it. Because of my own side hustles, I can choose to spend more time doing what I want–whether that be time spent with family, or time spent at work. Wrap up The great thing about having a side hustle is that you don’t have to give up your career as a physician. If your intention is simply to reduce your current clinical time, this gives you an opportunity to explore that without putting your primary source of income at risk. Maybe you’ve already come up with a business idea, or an invention, or thought of trying something on the side. Why not at least give it a shot? The worst that could happen is that you basically end up in the same place, maybe having wasted a little time or money. But depending on what your goals are, the upside could be tremendous. In my search to get international scholarships for students with low CGPA, I stumbled upon this article on LinkedIn and hope it would be of great benefit. The fact still remains that majority of people will graduate with low CGPA, perhaps due to life situations or due to prevailing conditions at the time of their study. Does this mean that such people can not aspire to be the best in their career later in life or cannot be successful in securing a scholarship to further their studies? Spare few minutes to read this article: Recently I have been receiving a lot of requests from my colleagues and student, asking me to help them prepare an application for a foreign scholarship. So before I move on from here, I would like to acknowledge that how difficult and important it is to go for higher studies, especially when you do not have excellent grades. For most student, it is very difficult to fund their higher studies, because they like me come from average income families, plus it takes tens of thousands of dollars. In spite of all this, having a lower CGPA shakes student's belief a lot more. They believe and the common notion is as well, that in order to get foreign scholarship student is required to have an exceptional CGPA. But the problem is not all student can have exceptional CGPA and I have seen a lot of students living a life of quiet desperation because, for some, higher education is their dream of life. So, first of all, let me clear one thing. In order to get a foreign scholarship, you do not need to have exceptional CGPA. At this point, you may doubt my authority, that if am I really qualified to talk on this topic. So just to boost your confidence, I will introduce my educational career. Please note, I have achieved what I wanted to, so what I am sharing is not to impress you, rather to “impress upon you” that if it is possible for me then it is possible for you as well. Since the year 2003 till now, I funded all of my education via scholarships and most important, I was not at the top of the class, I had average CGPA. And in spite of average CGPA, I got five scholarships, two national and three prestigious internationals (Erasmus Mundas Scholar, Marie Slovakia Curie Fellow, Italian National Research Scholar). And I repeat again, I am an average student academically. So I am going to share my tips that I used, to get the scholarship. My educational profile clearly says that GPA is not the driving factor..! It is just one tool in the entire tool of the applications that you submit to the university. This also means that there are other factors as well, we can work on and increase our chances to get a scholarship. 1. Up Work: At this point, if you are expecting, me to give you the silver pill and you will get the scholarship this is not going to happen. It is raw hard work simply stated. To cover what you lack in numbers. a. Start your research for the field you are planning to apply one year earlier. And start building your resume. What to build in a resume you may ask. Do volunteer research and publish research papers. There are tons of conferences and journals publishing papers, attached with someone and ask his help, if one, then better is a journal paper if two better be conference papers. Most students are going or almost all the student intends to go to Europe, USA, UK, Australia, Please note these countries are very research oriented. b. Your job experience, it is better if it matches with the Master or PhD degree or research position. If not it still is very valuable. The best scenario is, that your job experience and your research publication and your job that you are applying for, they match, like aligned stars. 2. Deciding prior which country you are intending to apply. Because each country has different ission requirements. And dates on which you can apply for a scholarship may vary. This can give you time to go through the bureaucratic issues and still be able to apply in time. 3. Let's assume you are planning to apply for Europe, Please note, there are several official websites which post scholarship positions. Euraxess, daad, are the names of few…Plus most important, you have to stay away from the competition. Most of the time, scholarships offered by local governments are less competitive, although they are not very well paid. But they still give you enough to live comfortably and study without doing odd jobs. 4. Now narrow down Universities, It is better to make a good quality application to few universities, rather a lot of low-quality application to a lot of universities. Prepare your application very well, since you have to prepare for it for a year now…If some university asks you to pay an application fee, it better because there will be low competition. 5. Now comes the stage, what component of your application should have. Do you know 80/20 rules, This means, what few factors of your application impact the most for your scholarship, those are a. Resume i. Showing your Job experience and research profile aligned together. b. Statement of Purpose/Letter of Motivation i. In this, you show your intent to pursue your degree, ii. Address following in your SOP 1. Why do you want to pursue in this research field? 2. What problems there are that you will solve? 3. It does not matter, if they are the real-world issue, a team is there to check your intent, so do not waste time, finding, the troubles that are threatening the world? 4. How can you solve that problem and how your skill set serves this purpose? 5. Do not put stories, any argument you put, back it by example and reference. Note the ission team screens, hundreds; if not thousand letters like this, they can tell easily, from which website, you copy which paragraph? 6. Also, address your future plans, it is far better to say that you are planning to pursue your career in the same field that you are applying. c. Letter of reference i. As far as the letter of references is concerned, on average two are required and must ask you to forward it to the concerned team. ii. There is nothing wrong, in requesting your supervisor to write a good letter of reference in your favour, give your CV. iii. As I said, some people feel shy in, telling other people how good they are and what their achievements are. This is not that time. Be proactive, and tell your supervisor, what your achievements are. iv. Request your supervisor, to quote an example if he is stating your achievement in the letter. 1. For example, he says” Mr.X is good in management, then ask him to quote an example, like “Mr.X, manage, international research conference last year. Finally, you need to have patience, and ability to accept rejection. Please note there are thousands of competent student making an application every year. You need to figure out, how you can fill the gap what you lack in CGPA.
