THE AGONY OF MANANAGEMENT STUDENTS IN NIGERIA. I write with a heavy heart. My name is not important. The institution I am in currently is also inconsequential at this point . What this article holds is what I want you to pay attention to. The Nigerian educational system is majorly divided into three sectors:science, management and humanities. Most parents want their children to be science students. And the society celebrates science students more than their humanities and management counterparts. It has become a norm. We are used to this and this is not the cause of my bitterness. The dream of every secondary school student is to further his education. Unfortunately this is where the hustle begins. Where millions of candidates struggle for ission. And a particular set of students are at disadvantage even before the race begins. After secondary school comes the higher institution. Which millions of students strive to get ission into. Out of the limited number of institutions present in the country a good number of them are specialized. Here is a list of some Universities of Technology *.Federal University of Technology Akure (FUTA) *.Federal University of Technology Owerri (FUTO ) *Madibbo Adama University of Technology Yola (MAUTECH) *Ladoke Akintola University of Technology Ogbomoso (LAUTECH) *.Abubakar Tafawa University of Technology Bauchi (ATBU) *.Bells University of Technology Ota (BUT) *.Rivers State University of Science and Technology Portharcourt (RSUST) *.Enugu State University of Science and Technology Enugu (ESUT) *.Kano University of Science and Technology Wudil (KUST) *Cross River State University of Tecnology Calabar (CRUTECH) Universities of Agriculture *.Federal University of Agriculture Abeokuta (FUNAAB) *.Federal University of Agriculture Makurdi (FUAM) *.Michael Okpara University of Agriculture Umudike (MOUAU) These institutions were specially founded for a particular set of students and offer various courses for student in the science department. You don't need a mathematician to know the probability of a science student gaining ission in relation to other students. You must be thinking if science students have this opportunity. The management students must have this opportunity. But truth is we don't. Thousands of management students apply for ission in the few institutions that offer their courses. And a large percentage are unable to gain ission due to the stiff competition. Now over the years some of these specialized universities started offering management courses. There was little relief in the ission struggle for management students. This specialized universities only offer few management courses in relation to the science courses. Even the resources in this institutions are unevenly allocated in favour of the sciences. But after all we were getting itted to study. We didn't complain. Things were going on fine. Most of these institutions got accredited by the NUC and some even have the ICAN verification. At this stage we were getting used to situation and to frustrate us the more something was done. Something that broke the heart of thousands of Nigerians. The government wants to stop these specialized universities from offering management courses. At first we thought it was a joke but this joke is gradually become a reality. And we have decided to speak up. I am a matriculated management student of a specialized university. Hence I am not doing this to broaden ission chances for myself. But I write for the legacy of management students and prospective management students as a whole. Now the excuse for trying to scrap these courses is that they are not the reason for the establishment of the institution. Funny isn't it? I will use the federal University of agriculture abeokuta to analyze this. This institution is suppose to be for agriculture only. But they offer courses like electrical engineering, computer science, statistics etc. All these which have nothing to do with agriculture. And no issue was made concerning this. At this point you must realize that the stigma is real. These management students play immense role in the financial part of agriculture. No one seems to care about this. Management courses do not need a million dollar laboratory or a mechanical equipment from the Asian continent before it can be taught. All that is required are qualified instructors which these institutions have in abundance. Hence no valid reason to scrap these programs. Now jamb registration has begun and thousands of management students are going to apply for ission in few institutions which will not it up to five percent of them. Thousands would roam the streets and a good number would go into illegal things. Secondary school students now prefer to go to science class because it is easier to further their secondary school education. The management department in Nigeria has been ailing for ages and is being pushed to the brink of demise. And I urge Nigeria as a whole to me in the journey to it's resuscitation. And we start by saying NO to scrapping of management courses in universities. Signed A concerned management student. 1 Like |

Let's see this beautiful piece....... "I bought my first SIM card with number 08032337015 for 30,000 NAIRA. I made calls 70/per minute, whether it was 25 seconds or 60 seconds. Then MTN held sway. Glo came. Econet came. Other Telecom companies came. All of a sudden, the price of SIM cards crashed to 3000 and 1000 NAIRA and then nothing! The telecom companies started begging us to pick up their SIM cards for free. And now, I don't even know what MTN charges for a minute's call again. It's something I take for granted. But in 2002, I always checked my balance to see how many minute's call my airtime could sustain. I do not have that worry today. Competition in the sector has driven down the cost of everything. If my MTN line misbehaves, I buy airtime on my Glo network and make calls from there. There were times when MTN gave me bonuses whenever I had dropped their SIM for other networks just to woo me back. Occasionally, MTN will role incentives, promos and packages to reward my loyalty. Other telecom companies do the same. The endpoint is always to keep their customers happy and hooked to their brands and services. All that happened because President Obasanjo deregulated the sector. It appeared a crazy idea when he did it, in fact, the cost we borne was humungous. But all that has eased out to usher in an era of choice that comes with comparative ease today. If you the government's deregulation of the petroleum sector, though initially things will be tough, but ultimately, it will bring happiness just as we experienced in the telecom sector. Have you ever imagined a situation where independent marketers will fall over their necks just to have you buy fuel in their stations? And then, you, the buyer, will make your yanga whether to buy in station A or B, if their price, quality and quantity is right. That time will come, and sooner than we expect. So let's endure the pain of deregulation to enjoy the gain that is sure to come." |

WHY DO WE SUFFER FUEL SCARCITY IN NIGERIA? 1. We do not have enough refineries to satisfy our domestic need, so we depend on fuel importation 2. Fuel is bought at the international market with US dollars and importers need USD to buy and import fuel 3. There is variability up to N121 bewteen the official USD exchange rate and the parallel market rate in Nigeria. 4. The government determines the price for fuel because the CBN is the only source of US Dollars for Marketers who import fuel. 5. If marketers source for dollars themselves, they cannot sell the product at the government price because of the N121 difference. 6. When the CBN gives US dollars to importers to buy fuel and import, they opt to selling the US dollars in the parallel market since they will make more profit, say about 50 times more than buying fuel and importing. 7. Most of the few marketers and dealers who use the dollars they got from CBN to buy fuel and import, divert the fuel to neighbouring countries like Chad and Benin Republic etc because fuel costs more in these countries since their Petroleum Market is free, and they will sell at a higher price and make more gains. 8. The CBN as a result of over 60% decrease in the price of crude leading to a reduced foreign reserve cannot afford to give enough dollars to marketers and dealers to import enough quantity of fuel for domestic consumption in the midst of all the leakages 9. These factors combined with a few others always lead to a shortage in the quantity of fuel that will satisfy Nigerian domestic consumption. WHAT HAS THE MINISTRY OF PETROLEUM DONE? 1. Stopped the CBN from giving USD to marketers and dealers and gave them freedom to source for foreign exchange in the parallel market 2. Allowed the pump price of fuel to reflect the international price of fuel using the foreign exchange at the parallel market 3. Given all marketers and dealers the right to buy and import fuel while sourcing for foreign exchange from the parallel market WHAT WILL BE THE IMPACT OF THIS? 1. Marketers and dealers can no longer collect dollars from CBN and sell at the parallel market instead of importing fuel and then causing fuel shortage 2. Marketers and dealers can no longer divert fuel to Chad, Benin and other neighbouring countries since they will not make extra profit in doing so 3. Everyone can now buy fuel and import. There are no more cabals in the Petroleum industry. Anyone can and do business. 4. More fuel will be brought to Nigeria and there will be competition among marketers that fuel stations will be begging and giving incentives to customers to buy their fuel 5. Competition will drive down the price of fuel as seen in the case of diesel. 6. Government will use its resources and time to develop infrastructure. This is the choice we have to make now that we have a Government that we can entrust our resources to and go to sleep. President Muhammadu Buhari has shown a high level of uprightness, prudence, determination to kill corruption and develop Nigeria. Let us him.. |

At a wedding ceremony last Saturday, the officiating minister asked if there was any one who had anything to say as regards the union of the two; Hell broke loose when a woman at the back carrying a child and started walking to the front toward the couple, the church was 'dead' quiet & the bride fainted! The minister asked whether she had anything to say, and she answered- . . . "We are not hearing at the back!!!" 1 Like |
