An FCT High Court in Apo has discharged a former Inspector-General of Police, Sunday Ehindero, who was charged with alleged diversion of N16.4million. The trial judge, Justice Silvanus Oriji, also discharged Ehindero’s co-defendant, a former Commissioner of Police in charge of Budget at the Force Headquarters, John Obaniyi, of the 10-count charge filed against them by the Independent Corrupt Practices and other related Offences Commission (IC).

The IC had alleged that the defendants conspired and used their positions to pay N500 million in two fixed deposit s with Wema Bank and Intercontinental Bank from the N557.9m donated by the Bayelsa Government to the Nigeria Police for purchase of arms and ammunition.

The anti-corruption commission further alleged that the N500 million placed in fixed deposits yielded an interest of N16.4million which was allegedly diverted by the defendants. They however pleaded not guilty. Loading..

Following the closing of the case of the prosecution on May 8 after calling four witnesses, the defendants filed a no-case submission, urging the court to discharge them. Ruling on the submission on Tuesday, Justice Oriji held that the prosecution failed to establish a prima facie case against the defendants which would have warranted the court to call on them (defendants) to open their defence. He held that the prosecution had failed to prove that the defendants converted the said interest generated to their personal use.

The judge further held that the investigation officer did not discredit the claim of the defendants to prove that the money was not used for operational purposes. “I, therefore, uphold the no-case submission. The defendants are hereby discharged,” he held.

Controversial radio presenter, Daddy Freeze, has said that there is no such thing as a holy bible.

Freeze wrote on Instagram on Thursday night that the scriptures are the holy contents, not the bible, Igbere TV reports.

“The ‘Bible’ is a compilation of just some of the scriptures and there is nothing holy about some ‘unholy’ people choosing what scriptures to combine into a biblical cannon, while ordering that the rest of the books that didn’t suit their narrative be destroyed.

“Neither Christ, nor any of the disciples ever read a bible, what they read were the scriptures and as true Christians who follow the true teaching of our savior Yahushua, we must endeavor to go over and above what was compiled into a ‘bible’ for us, to search for the scriptural depth that defines Christianity!” he wrote.

Mrs Olajumoke Simplice, President, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria (CITN), has said that Nigeria will not progress without effective taxation system in place.

Simplice made this known at a Seminar on ‘’Current issues in Nigeria Taxation: VAT Act, Stamp duty, TIN and PTF’’, in Abuja on Tuesday.

“The Value added tax at five per cent cannot work; when it was promulgated in 1993, it was said that it will be reviewed over time; 25 years past, nothing has been done.

“In 2007, 2009 and 2019, attempts were made and there was a lot of noise around it. I think Nigerians just need to understand that we cannot progress without taxation.

“The days of oil revenue are completely over, we should be working on the issues of taxation,” she said.

She said that the 7.5 per cent VAT in the 2020 budget as part of revenue generation was laudable with the exemption of basic items from being taxed.

According to her, the items are the ones that affect the common man in the health sector, agriculture and others.

She added that micro and small enterprises with less than N25 million turnover was also exempted.

Simplice said that government must work out details on how to implement the VAT adding that the decision was a step in the right direction.

She further explained that Nigerians should equally understand that VAT remained a consumption tax that one can only pay when they consume goods applicable.

“If you sit down in your house and eat, you will not pay VAT, if you give your wife money to go to the market, you will not pay VAT but if you carry your wife to Sheraton to eat and sleep, you will pay.

“That is what we are saying, those things that are liable to VAT do not affect the masses and they need to understand that.

Nigerians need to understand that VAT is a consumption tax, If you do not consume Hennessy, Champaign and others, you will not pay,’’ she said.

Commenting on the seminar, she said that the major focus was to get people talk on various issues as it concerned VAT, Stamp duty Act among others.

She added that the seminar was part of the institute’s advocacy programme to government policies and programmes.

“We organise this periodically to tackle issues and elicit people’s comment and possibly advise government on issues and policies,” she added.

Also, the Executive Secretary t Tax Board, Prof. Abiola Sani, said that effort must be made to educate Nigerians on the VAT.

He said that the proposed VAT of 7.5 per cent was not targeted at the ordinary Nigerians adding that government’s efforts to increase local revenue through VAT should be commended.

“We need to get people pay tax; the consumables that will affect the ordinary Nigerians have been removed from VAT.

“Stakeholders need to keep educating Nigerians to understand all issues concerning taxation in the country for economic growth and development,” he added.

Presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the 2019 elections, Atiku Abubakar, has said that all is not well with Nigeria.

Atiku said this on Monday in his message ahead of the nation’s 59th independence anniversary on October 1.

He said that at 59, the nation’s founding fathers would never have imagined that there would be no free press.

“Our judiciary is under attack, and our youths and activists, who should ordinarily be the future of Nigeria, would be facing the very real threat of arrest and intimidation should they speak out about the state of the nation,” he said.

The former Vice President quoted the late writer Chinua Achebe who once wrote: “When an adult is in the house, the she-goat is not left to suffer the pain of parturition on its tether.”

He added: “All is not well when Nigeria is now officially the world headquarters for extreme poverty and out of school children, yet the cost of maintaining those in government continues to grow, while the needs of the governed are not being met.”

Atiku also said that instead of just calling for prayers, he would request Nigerians “to believe in Nigeria’s betterment, to work for Nigeria’s betterment, and to insist that no one in Nigeria, no matter how highly placed, shall be bigger than the laws of our land.”

He commended Governor Bello Matawalle of Zamfara State for “massively investing in public education.”

Atiku also praised the chairman of Air Peace, Allen Onyeama, for repatriating Nigerians in South Africa in the face of xenophobic attacks.

“Nigeria belongs to all of us and we all have a role to play in making our nation great. Nigeria should be the beacon of hope, democracy, and freedom, to not only the African continent but to the black diaspora the world over,” he said.

President of the United States, Donald Trump has lashed at the impeachment inquiry against him by the country’s House of Representatives.

Trump took to his Twitter handle to describe the move as “Witch Hunt garbage”, even as Americans trend #ImpeachTrump hash tag.

The House Speaker, Nancy Pelosi said the Parliament would launch the inquiry, a process that could ultimately lead to the President’s removal from office.

The House move, according to reports was over reports Trump sought foreign help to smear a political rival, setting up a dramatic clash between Congress and the White House that could spill into the 2020 presidential campaign.

Reports had it that Trump had pressured Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in a July 25 phone call to investigate Democratic presidential frontrunner Joe Biden and his son.

Trump promised on Tuesday to release a transcript of his phone call. He also confirmed he had withheld nearly $400m in US aid to Ukraine but denied he did so as leverage to get Zelensky to initiate an investigation that would damage Biden.

The telephone conversation transcript has since been released as promised.

The Vice-Chairman of Uhunmwode Local Government Council of Edo State, Hon. Edosa Iyayi, has tendered his resignation over what he described as two years of “abysmal failure and non-performance” of the Council.

In the letter obtained by Igbere TV, Iyayi detailed his “troubled conscience” and “desire to avoid tainting the legacy” of his father and family by “continued association with the council that has failed to fulfill electoral promises to the people of Uhunmwode.”

“Mr. Chairman, I am an lyayi and we all know what the name lyayi stands for. My conscience is not at peace and my late father‘s legacies are being threatened by my being associated with this abysmal failure and non-performance”, he said.

“After almost 2years as Vice Chairman of Uhunmwode Council, I am unable to come to with the fact that the council has not delivered even a single project in the actualization of our numerous election promises. I cannot, as Vice Chairman, reconcile the fact that I am a part of a team that has failed woefully. I have waited, prayed and hoped for things to change at some point, but it doesn’t seem this will happen anytime soon.

“I have the rest of my life to live with myself and cannot continue to serve the Council as is presently being managed and still maintain a true state of happiness. The Uhunmwode Local Government as is presently being run clearly violates both my family's ethical standards and my personal judgment.

“Mr. Chairman, the purpose of this letter therefore, is to humbly convey to you, my decision to resign my position as Executive Vice Chairman of Uhunmwode Local Government Council forthwith,” added Iyayi in the letter.

He thanked the APC and the people for the opportunity to serve and explained that his resignation is without prejudice to his future desire to serve in other capacities.

The Nigerian Senate, on Wednesday, resolved to commend President Muhammadu Buhari for shutting down all the Nigerian land borders.

This followed a motion raised by Senator Adamu Aliero (APC, Kebbi Central) at today's plenary, which got the of over 2/3 majority.

According to the upper legislative chambers, the President's decision was to “rectify the deteriorating effect on our country of persistent smuggling of products that negatively affect the Nigerian economy’s decline the well-being of our nation”.

The Senate equally resolved to commend the Nigerian Customs Service “for their role in intensifying the curbing of smuggling across the borders, and ridding Nigeria of smuggled goods and services.”

This is even as the red chambers vowed to task the Ministries of Foreign Affairs and Interior to increase diplomatic outreach to the government of the Republic of Benin, Cameroon, Niger and Chad to take urgent measures to stop their countries from being used as smuggling base “to perpetuate the illegal importation of unwanted goods into Nigeria.”

While assuring the said countries that the border closure was not a punitive measure targeted at them, the Senate directed the Committee on Customs and Tariff, Trade and Investment and Interior to review the border closure and recommend “sustainable resolution.”

These resolutions were reached at today's plenary, which was equally shared on the Senate's official Twitter handle, as obtained by Igbere TV.
