I have learnt a new word today

Dear Nairalanders, What has 2024 taught you? For me, this year has been a rollercoaster of emotions, filled with ups and downs. I started the year on a high note, having expanded my farm from 500 to 1,000 capacity. To achieve this, I took loans from family and friends to stock up the farm. However, this decision turned out to be my greatest undoing. As the cost of feed and other expenses rose, it became difficult to keep up. My chickens weren't properly fed, and this led to a significant loss. To make matters worse, a disease struck, and I lost virtually all my investments. One of the lessons I learned from this experience is that nothing is certain in life, anything can happen to anybody at any time. Just because you're doing well today doesn't mean you'll continue to do well tomorrow. All you can do is hope and pray that evil doesn't befall you. The stress and sadness became overwhelming, and what once brought me joy now brought me pain. I thought that would be the end of it, but little did I know that I still had a long way to go. Despite shutting down the farm, I was still struggling to pay off the debts I incurred. I had to swallow my pride and look for a job to service my loans, which I'm still doing till this day. But just when I thought things couldn't get any worse about 2 weeks ago, I received a call from my neighbors at the farm that a fire had spread to my farm, partially razing part of my pen and completely razing my banana plantation. As I reflect on my experiences, I've learned some valuable lessons that I'd like to share with you. Firstly, life is not a straight line, and nothing is set in stone. If I had known that things would take a turn for the worse, I would have diversified my investments instead of putting all my eggs in one basket. Perhaps I would have used part of the farm for crop farming or explored other business ventures. This experience has taught me the importance of diversification and not putting all my hopes in one thing. Secondly, good people will always be there to help. The people who have been helping me now are some of the same people I was good to in the past. Some of them have even chosen to forgive my debts, which is a huge blessing. Although I still have millions of naira in debts, their kindness and generosity have been a source of comfort during this difficult time. Thirdly, Prayer is essential. I've come to realize that prayer can move mountains, and it's been a source of strength for me during this challenging time. I encourage everyone to always pray, no matter what they're going through. Lastly, Don't be afraid to speak out and share your story. Initially, I kept my struggles to myself, but it was killing me gradually. It wasn't until I found the courage to share my story with others that I started to feel a sense of hope and healing. Don't be afraid to open up to people you trust - it may be the first step towards finding the help and you need. As I look back on 2024, I'm grateful for the lessons I've learned, despite the challenges I've faced. I'm determined to rise from the ashes and start anew, and I hope that my story can inspire others to do the same. So, Nairalanders, what has 2024 taught you? What lessons have you learned from your experiences, and how have you overcome the challenges you've faced? Let's share our stories |

Well done! What's the name of the brand of feed you are feeding them? Btw, CRD could be because of cold or they chicks could inherit them from their parents 6 Likes |

Like someone above already advised, just run the two businesses simultaneously. Farming in Nigeria is becoming something else. For instance, Poultry Drugs, feeds and inputs are now very expensive, gluts happen occasionally and so you will need other sources of income to stay afloat. This is not to deter you but then 1m might not go far in establishing a pig and poultry farm unless you havestructures in place or maybe you can easily lease structures sha because building structures will take bulk of the startup capital. I wish you the best but don't quit the other job because of poultry and piggery

God bless you, Op! . I'm planning to plant Okra January or February next year and I have been trying to gather information from practicing Farmers. Your thread is coming at the right time. I would have love to ask questions but then I would wait till you complete your teachings because you would have answered majority of the question by the time you are done with the thread.
