An Islamic cleric and the National Chairman of the Council of Ulama, Dr. Ibrahim Jalingo, has endorsed death penalty for religious faithful who renounce their religion. In a strongly worded statement shared on his official Facebook page on Thursday, Jalingo openly defended a Hadith prescribing the death penalty for apostates and accused critics of Hadith literature of what he described as “compound ignorance.” The cleric made the statement in response to criticisms questioning the authenticity of the Hadith, alleging that it contradicts the Quran. A Hadith is a report of the sayings, actions, or approvals of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). It serves as a key source of guidance in Islam, second only to the Qur’an. In his post, Jalingo launched a detailed theological rebuttal against what he described as “fabricators” attempting to discredit the Hadith. Jalingo, wrote: “Today, I came across the first Hadith among the supposed ‘100 Hadiths’ which the fabricators claim contradict the Qur’an. They assert that Muslims who believe in both the divine revelation of the Hadith and the Qur’an cannot respond to them! The Hadith in question is: ‘Whoever changes his religion, kill him.’ The person who presented this statement by the fabricators to me is someone named Issiyaku Abdulkadir. “Here is what I wrote in response to the claims of these fabricators: First, I thank you for starting to bring me what this compound ignoramus refers to as ‘100 Hadiths that contradict the verses of the Qur’an.’ This will, God willing, give me the opportunity to expose his ignorance to the world”, Jalingo’s statement partly read. He continued by reinforcing the divine origin of Hadith, equating it with the Qur’an: “Second: It should be made clear to everyone that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) never said: ‘The role of Hadith is to interpret the Qur’an.’ However, the Prophet said: ‘Indeed, I was given the Qur’an and something like it alongside it.’ What is true is that the Qur’an is a revelation from Allah, and so is the Hadith a revelation from Allah. Often, the Qur’an addresses a matter in a summarised or brief way, and then the revelation of Hadith comes to elaborate on that matter.” In what is sure to spark fierce debates among scholars and human rights advocates, Jalingo defended the Hadith calling for the execution of apostates, citing Qur’anic verses in : “Third: The Hadith you cited—’Whoever changes his religion, kill him’—is authentic and does not contradict the Qur’anic revelation. This is because Allah says in Surah At-Tawbah, verse 5: ‘Then, when the sacred months have ed, kill the polytheists wherever you find them.’ He ed his claims with another Quranic citation in Surah Al-Baqarah, verse 193, saying, “Fight them until there is no more fitnah (disbelief and oppression) and religion is for Allah alone.’ Meaning: fight them until they accept Islam. And in Surah An-Nisa’, verse 89: ‘Kill them wherever you find them.’ And again in Surah An-Nisa’, verse 91: ‘Kill them wherever you confront them.'” He further declared that the widely quoted verse advocating freedom of religion had been abrogated: “You see, unless someone is completely ignorant like the fabricators, no one would claim that the Hadith which says ‘Whoever changes his religion, kill him’ contradicts the Qur’an—because the Qur’an itself goes even further. It does not only permit the killing of apostates, but all polytheists in certain contexts. “Fourth: You should also know that the verse ‘There is no compulsion in religion’ (La ikrah fi ad-deen) has had its ruling abrogated (naskh) by the verses we’ve just quoted, as well as by the very Hadith you brought: ‘Whoever changes his religion, kill him.’ And abrogation is a well-established concept within the revelation of the Glorious Qur’an.” In a final explosive comment, Jalingo launched a personal attack on his critics, stating, “This is a brief response to the compounded ignorance of this individual—whose approach and manner resemble that of prostitutes and effeminate men—i.e., the so-called fabricators.” The cleric’s post has since gone viral across social media, drawing both and backlash. While some hardline followers praised him for defending Islam, other Muslim voices have condemned the remarks as dangerous and inflammatory. https://punchng.com/islamic-cleric-defends-death-penalty-for-whoever-changes-religion/ |

The Federal Government has approved an upward review of the fees for the Nigerian port effective from September 1, 2024. This was disclosed in a statement issued on Wednesday by the spokesman for the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kenneth Udo, on the X handle of the NIS. The increment aims to ensure the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard port, Udo said. '' As part of its efforts to maintain the quality and integrity of the Nigerian Standard port, the Federal Government has approved an upward review of the fees for the port, effective from September 1, 2024. “Based on the review, a 32-page port booklet with five-year validity previously charged at N35,000 will now be N50,000 only; while a 64-page port booklet with 10-year validity which was N70,000 will be N100,000,” the statement read. The NIS said though it regretted “any inconvenience this increase might cause prospective applicants,” it assured Nigerians of “unwavering commitment to transparency and quality service delivery at all times'' https://punchng.com/fg-hikes-port-fees-to-n50000-n100000/ |

You are actually the one ignorant here and I bet you cannot even think beyond the pecuniary gains you make, because if you can, you will see that directive is not different from directive. It is all a hoax from the present government. How come the directive to remove fuel subsidy or the one given on increase in electricity tariff took effect immediately (the same day) while those of selling crude oil in naira and removing tariffs on food items have to take several months before they are effective? Which of the directives require some sort of urgency? You have been blinded by your for your paymaster. Idiot |

Opposition parties in the country, on Thursday, condemned Wednesday’s raid on the Nigeria Labour Congress national headquarters in Abuja by security agents. The PUNCH reports that the armed men, allegedly from the DSS, invaded the NLC office and carted away several documents. According to the congress, the raid took place around 8:30 pm, with operatives reportedly breaking into the Labour House. NLC’s Head of Media and Public Relations, Benson Upah, said the attackers ransacked the bookshop on the second floor, confiscating hundreds of books and other publications. “The invading team claimed that they were searching for seditious materials allegedly used during the #EndBad Governance protests,” Upah said. But the DSS spokesman, Peter Afunanya, denied the allegation. “Please, kindly note that the Service (DSS) did not carry out any operation at the NLC office in Abuja,”Afunanya told The Punch. Opposition parties, in separate interviews with The PUNCH, condemned the action, But the ruling All Progressives Congress urged for restraint, saying it was too early to rush to a conclusion and start casting aspersions. The PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, characterised the action as an attempt to suppress the labour union. “What happened yesterday is condemnable. As a party, we do not subscribe to that approach. Security agencies shouldn’t be deployed to go to institutions of the state, like the labour office, to ransack them and then suspect or blackmail them into sponsoring what you call a protest. Nigerians are entitled to their rights. Nigerians can see through them and through the government, and they have decided that they will go on the street. “It is condemnable. As a party, we do not it, and we see it as a further attempt to coerce the citizens and get them into silence. That is just the attempt or the decision of the APC,” the PDP chieftain said. Similarly, the chief spokesman for the Labour Party presidential candidate, Yunusa Tanko, also condemned the action. Tanko said, “The action of the security agencies is totally condemnable. No one needs to come into the NLC office in a commando style. These are people who are accessible to you. At any point in time, you can easily walk into the NLC office and issue them a warrant and say you suspect something is going on and you want to charge them if you find anything incriminating. So what is all this showmanship of barging into the NLC office unannounced and saying you are investigating some documents? These are respected union leaders, not criminals.'' Also condemning the invasion, the National Publicity Secretary of New Nigeria People’s Party, Ladipo Johnson, “One begins to wonder whether they are going back to the military days. One begins to wonder about their propensity to tolerate constructive criticism or protests, which is an aspect of democracy for that matter. It would seem that from Mr. President’s speech, he feels that the people do not understand. He hasn’t expressed that he will look again at some of his major policies that people believe have brought the economy to the stage it is at.” Also, human rights lawyer, Femi Falana (SAN), described the invasion as a “shameful reminder” of the dark days of military dictatorship in a statement he personally signed on Thursday. “For genuine democrats, it’s utterly regrettable that official actions in a democratic dispensation could be reminiscent of the atrocities that defined the dark days of military dictatorship. “It is incontestable that it is illegal for security forces to invade the homes and offices of law-abiding citizens and corporate bodies under a democratic dispensation,” Falana said. Also, the Civil Liberties Organisation described the invasion as “an egregious abuse of democratic principles,” in a statement by its Executive Director, Ibuchukwu Ezike. “We demand that the police return carted NLC property without delay and tender an apology to them for this flagrant and heinous act,” the CLO said. However, the ruling APC called for calm, saying it was too early to start trading blame over the alleged invasion. In an exclusive phone call, the National Publicity Director of the party, Bala Ibrahim, said, “It is something that can be multidirectional and one thing leads to another. Unless and until you are able to get information from those who are investigating as to what prompted their action, you cannot just pre-empt and jump to a conclusion by saying a particular action is wrong. “You don’t know from the angle they are coming. It might be some information given to them and, in their course of investigation and in an attempt to leave no stone unturned, they will invade premises, with a view to getting clues. One thing about crime is that no matter how smart you are, you always must leave behind something that will give clue to it. So that is the ugly side of crime. “I think for now, it will be too early to jump to a conclusion and say action A or action B is wrong. It has to be after the investigators have been debriefed and got information with regard to what led to their action. Let’s not begin to paint political pictures, based on emotions and sentiments. We will be one-sided and wrong.” https://punchng.com/apc-opposition-clash-over-nlc-secretariat-invasion/ |

If protests are a constitutional right of Nigerians to drive home their grievances or react to negative policies of the government, then why is it that the APC-led government right from the time of Muhammadu Buhari till now ìs always against protests and subsequently clamps down on protesters as well as organisers of protests? On many occasions, the government is known to sponsor thugs who infiltrate the protesters thereby causing mayhem and destruction of properties, just to create the impression that such protests are not peaceful or are highjacked by unscrupulous elements. Since the news of the planned protests for August became public, the current leadership has been rattled. The question now is: shouldn't there be protests any more? Has protest been removed from the constitutional rights of Nigerians? |
