Fielding questions from BBC Hausa Service in Gusau, the state capital, Dr Shinkafi, who is one of the contestants for the party’s national chairmanship, said that both ex-Governor Yari and Senator Marafa have since expelled themselves from the party.

According to him, the party is one in the state, saying that there is no faction in the state, stressing that the duo was only deceiving their ers and do not want to tell them the truth.

Dr Shinkafi explained that Yari was rejected after he presented his old hip card when he went to the national secretariat of the party to buy an expression form for the national chairmanship contest.

Nnamdi Kanu has denied being a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, the Nigerian Government has claimed.

According to Shuaibu Labaran, counsel to the Federal Government, Kanu “vehemently” denied being a member of the proscribed pro-Biafra group.

He disclosed this while speaking with journalists after Wednesday’s court proceedings at the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja.

According to Labaran: “One of the charges suggested that the defendant, Nnamdi Kanu is a member of IPOB and he vehemently denied being a member of IPOB.

“That is very curious and we urge Nigerians to see us through how we are going to prove all those charges against the defendant in no time to come.”

Retired commodore Kunle Olawunmi’s revelation on Channels television earlier this week in the wake of mass killings in Jos carried out by Fulanis is not new, and neither is it surprising. Olawunmi, a former military intelligence officer with the Defence Intelligence Agency had said that the plot to Islamize Nigeria has the imprimatur and backing of top government officials serving and retired, a conspiracy that goes deeper than what is seen at the surface.

For the past three years, it has become a near frequent occurrence for former government officials to make such claims on national television. Retd Gen. Theophilus Yakubu Danjuma, a former chief of defence staff and minister of defence claimed in a speech in 2018 that the military collude with the Fulanis and other allied groups to spread terror and forcefully displace people from their lands. In 2020, a former deputy governor of the Central Bank of, Obadiah Mailafia made a similar claim on Nigeria Info, stating that a sitting governor is a funder, as well as a commander of Boko Haram. As a matter of fact, during the Jonathan istration, then president Goodluck Jonathan made a shocking claim that Boko Haram had infiltrated his government.

Presidential aspirant Kingsley Moghalu said earlier today that President Muhammadu Buhari has decided to dialogue with of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), the secessionist group in the South-East as a way to de-escalating the security situation in the region. The former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) said this was one of his recommendations to the president in order to end the tense security situation in the region.

Although such claims cannot be independently verified unless they are made by the president’s media officers, if it is true, it adds feathers to Moghalu’s cap, given the fact that this has been a yearning for many people concerned with the situation in the South East, the erstwhile most peaceful geopolitical zone in the country now competing with northern zones for the most madness by the minute. However, such news making headlines just about a month after a new security strategy was approved for the South East by the president.

The issue is not in the drafting of a strategy to deal with security challenges peculiar to regions, but it raises questions about the way the said strategy was shrouded in secrecy. It is very understandable to maintain the element of surprise and prevent the unsanctioned dissemination of classified information to the public which would find its way to the “enemy” (especially given how Igbo and Yoruba officers in the military have come under suspicions from the leadership of having sympathies for the separatist Indigenous Peoples of Biafra and Oduduwa (Yoruba) Nation), but it is also important to mention that the uproar that greeted such a meeting when it was held still has not died which would put such dialogue–as Moghalu has alleged–under serious doubts especially as to the federal government’s sincerity. As a matter of fact, the meeting that was convened in Aso Rock on 11th May had the attendance of the president, the vice president, the chief of staff, as well as the heads of all security agencies in the country. Not a single one of those persons were from the South East. The closest to the South-East a member of that meeting was from, was Leo Irabor, the chief of defence staff who himself is from Delta state.

Ogun includes cooling gas in gas ban

According to the Ogun State Government, the prohibition on the sale of all cooling system service and repair of air-conditioning and refrigeration devices in the state has been extended till further notice.

Ola Oresanya, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Environment, made the announcement on Sunday.

After five explosions in Abeokuta last week Friday, the government put a ban on the sale and repair of industrial gas.

Oresanya explained that the restriction was extended to cooling gas to allow for a thorough examination into previous gas explosions in the state.

He went on to say that the explosion was caused by sources suspected of adulterating these flammable materials, which resulted in the deaths of people.

A truck crushed three persons on a motorcycle to death on Sunday night around Ago Oko in Abeokuta.

Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Spokesman, Ogun Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Corps (TRACE), confirmed the incident to newsmen.

Akinbiyi explained that the accident occurred at 8 p.m.

The TRACE spokesman stated that the rider of the motorcycle was trying to overtake the truck from the right, saying that in the process, it collided with another speeding motorcycle which threw them under the truck.

“We gathered from eyewitness that the motorcycle was trying to overtake a Dangote truck from the right, unfortunately another speeding bike collided with the victims’ bike from the rear throwing them underneath moving truck on the fast lane.

“The three of them on the motorcycle were crushed to death in the process.

“A phone retrieved at scene was used to connect the relations of the deceased and the corpses were taken away by their family,” he said.

Akinbiyi, however, said the truck was still at the accident scene, saying that hoodlums used the opportunity to loot the truck after chasing away police and TRACE officials from the scene.

was reported late last year that the United Arab Emirates jailed no fewer than six Nigerians for various links with terror groups in the period spanning the onset of Boko Haram into national and international limelight till the period they were arrested. The most overlooked fact was that one of the persons jailed was a government official. That was a slap on the faces of Nigerians, and an even bigger indictment on the Nigerian government.

This draws some parallels to the Pantami’s case currently making the rounds. In a video and audio recordings, media houses who dare be different (Gazette Nigeria and Sahara Reporters) have established the fact that the minister of communication and digital economy, Sheikh Isa Ali Ibrahim Pantami has terror sympathies for international jihadists groups AL Qaeda and the Taliban by virtue of recordings from his preaching in North Eastern Nigeria in 2006.

Pantami’s current travails mirror in great length the status of Nigeria as a failed state. For those who would disagree, there’s no sane clime where an Islamist who was fired from his teaching job by a university in Northern Nigeria for incendiary teachings, who also obtained a PhD from a university in Saudi Arabia known as a hotbed for Salafist and Wahhabist recruiters, would go on to hold a sensitive position as the minister of communication who by virtue of that position, holds the database of an ethnically diverse country as Nigeria. The security breach in which the State Security Service (or DSS) didn’t see, or saw but failed to flag as a going concern during his confirmation hearing at the senate in 2019 raises important points.

First, does the fact that Pantami’s predecessor, Adebayo Shittu was also a radical Islamist who was accused of instigating a religious riot in his home state of Oyo in 2001 not sufficient grounds enough to strike out his nomination as communications minister?

First time can be excused as a mistake. The second time–the fact that another terrorist sympathizer who believes that Osama Bin Laden is a better Muslim than he is, who also longed for the day of 9/11 styled jihad in Nigeria–is definitely not a mistake. The DSS not coming alive at one of the most important times of their existence calls into question their attitude in handling sensitive issues that concern national security.

Award-winning Nigerian author, Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, has taken a swipe at Nigerian feminists.

Chimamanda in a viral video interview warned Nigerian feminists to stop using feminism to justify their wickedness.

According to her, some young Nigerian ladies in the name of feminism sound really mean and ‘nasty’ which is not the aim of feminism.

Chimamanda said: “I say to young Nigerian feminists – please do not use feminism to justify your wickedness.

“Sometimes, I see some of these young ladies and when talking to them, they sound really mean, and I say to them this isn’t feminism; you’re just being nasty.”

Feminism in the world today aims to combat gender inequality and oppression of women in society.

When you hear of military action consisting of intense machine-gun fire backed by air of helicopter gunships all aimed at communities, the sensible guess is that the incidents described are from wars between hostile countries and the targets are military camps. But Nigeria is where sensible guesses find themselves almost perennially wrong.

The scenario described didn’t happen in a war. It was what transpired in Konshisha LGA, Benue State and the targets were largely innocent Benue indigenes being shot at and strafed by their own national army in what was a policing action. Yes, Policing.

Apparently, there had been an armed attack on a military convoy and the Nigerian Army confirmed that its actions in some communities in Benue State were in response to the armed robbery attacks that led to the death of 11 soldiers attached to Operation WhirlStroke in the Konshisha Local Government Area.

Common sense says that it is unlikely that armed robbers share details of operations with entire LGAs and the Benue State itself has been dealing with attacks from Fulani herdsmen and terrorists for years so it’s quite bizarre to see the Nigerian Army decide to lead with extremely prejudicial military action on peaceful Nigerian communities instead of conducting investigations and letting the right legal channels handle the allocation of guilt and punishment.

There is a weird ruthlessness that comes on the Nigerian Army whenever they are in the South and Middle-Belt that one almost struggles to understand but that struggle would be insincere because the truth is that there’s obviously an ethnic undertone to the entire thing.

The affected areas are in the Northeast of Benue State and the Senator representing the senatorial District, Gabriel Suswam, has criticized the Nigerian Army for treating unarmed Tiv communities like hostile enemy armies that they aren’t. The senator said that attacks like this only served to legitimise the belief in the existence of an agenda to “terrorise, destabilise and depopulate the affected Tiv communities.”

The Nigerian Army is unique among other armies in the world in that it seems to have been structured to focus on internal matters rather than external security issues. Boko Haram is the closest it has ever been to having to actually defend Nigeria from aggression and the results gotten there leave a lot to be desired.
The Nigerian Army holds the Nigerian People in contempt and doesn’t value their lives and this has come from having military rulers who have used the Army to oppress the people. This has given the Army a certain culture that is doing Nigeria no good and it will never be different as long as ex-military personnel are allowed to hold executive power in government.

This attitude didn’t start with the Buhari istration. The Odi massacre happened under President Olusegun Obasanjo and the unhelpful inclination to violence has given Nigeria an unhelpful culture of violence that is tearing us apart and stopping us from learning to negotiate properly as individuals and communities.

The change has to begin with Nigerians committing to a demilitarisation of the society and government. This would require that we decide to stop voting for people with military experience and place a deliberate focus on improving our capacity for nonviolent interaction.

A replay of Odi 1999 in Bayelsa is happening in Koshinsha LGA in Benue State as residents are fleeing and taking refuge inside bushes. They are allegedly running away from the guns and fire of soldiers who are said to have returned to avenge the death of over eight of their colleagues who were mauled by bandits on Tuesday afternoon.

Report say bandits ambushed and killed eight soldiers on Tuesday in a remote community in Koshinsha LGA in northern Benue State in Nigeria.

Anadolu Agency reported that ”some armed men suspected to be militia bandits killed eight soldiers on Tuesday, leading to deployment of more troops in the volatile area.”

Residents of Gbinde, Bonta,Ulam, Agidi ,Gungul and other villages are sending SOS cries , asking to be saved from the revenge of the soldiers.

Confirming the incident, Ebuka Ohanusi , a soldier ,whose father and orderly was killed by the marauding bandits told our reporter ” what actually happened in Koshinsha or oju axis. The villagers killed and burnt 16 soldiers that where on patrol of which my father and regular was among them that the village youth killed and burnt. I am not justifying the burning of the house there, but how I wish you will understand what we are going through here in this country”

“My regular married few month ago and now his gone, have you ever lost a father that you are doing the same work with?”

James Atsa’am, a native of one of the villages tried to trace the cause of the incident “There’s a land tussle better two communities of Tiv in Konshisha local government and Igede in Oju local government all of Benue state. That’s the beginning. So from the speech released by state government yesterday, it’s alleged that the officers of operation whirl stroke were attacked there while on patrol by bandits. It’s the alleged attack by bandits that Army are killing and burning unarmed villagers in the entire local government."

Nigeria’s secret police alerted the Nigeria Police Force and Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodinma, at least three times before government security facilities in the state were attacked Monday, a former Assistant Director with the Department of State Services, Dennis Amachree, has said.

However, the police and the governor, chief security of the state, failed to act on the intelligence by the DSS, Amachree added.

The former DSS official spoke on Thursday on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily programme

Gunmen had on Monday attacked the Owerri Correctional Centre and freed over 1,800 inmates.

The attackers also razed the Imo State Police Command headquarters situated in Owerri and burnt all the vehicles parked at the command headquarters.

Speaking on the television programme, the ex-DSS director said, “There was enough intelligence, enough actionable intelligence. Actionable in the sense that it allows for space for people to execute it; one week ahead of the event and of course 72 hours before the event and then 48 hours before the event.

“So, three times, the Nigeria Police Force was informed by the DSS that this is going to happen because some suspects that are being geolocated around the area were found surveilling the prisons and the police headquarters but you know in our lackadaisical way, when the intelligence came, they threw it by the side and when something happens, everybody runs around.”

Amachree stressed that the Imo State governor was aware that the prison and the police headquarters was about to be attacked.

“All security reports are shared with the governor in a state first, then, it is shared with other sister agencies like the police, the military, if there is military installations there, all of them got this particular report. So, the governor is very much aware,” he said.

It seemed like an act of God when in the same week that the governor of Imo state (as the alleged chief security officer of that state) instructed police officers to defend themselves with their guns when attacked by criminals, the inspector general of police who himself had fingered the Indigenous Peoples of Biafra (IPOB) in the Monday attack on Owerri federal corrections centre–and threatened fire and brimstone–was sacked and replaced by a deputy inspector general.

For the school of thought who believed that this was President Buhari’s damage control move in a region he seemingly bears lasting animosity for, they couldn’t have been more deceived when unconfirmed stories were reported hours later that a security operation has been launched to fish out the perpetrators of the attack which has been denied by IPOB.

The politics that led to the emergence of Usman Alkali Baba as the new inspector general of police leaves a lot to be desired, especially considering that a more senior and qualified DIG Moses Jitoboh from Bayelsa was retired to make the emergence of Baba possible. Jitoboh’s crime was simply that he is from the “wrong side” of the country. With the new IGP’s emergence, the security and paramilitary leadership of the country is now actively skewered against people from the South South and the South East. Only the offices of the Chief of Defence Staff and the Acting Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service were given to people from the South South, with both men–Leo Irabor and John Mbraure respectively–from Delta state.

This ultimately means that enormous responsibility lies with the new police chief. The presidency has already set him up against his colleagues because of the unmeritorious manner in which he emerged as IGP. It would not be the first time the Nigerian government would eschew merit and seniority as a result of influence peddling. As a matter of fact the government even broke its new law on police leadership which states that the inspector general must not be kept one day further in office at the expiration of his tenure, when it extended the immediate past IG’s tenure by two months when it expired on February 1.
