.Status: Visa Denied
Location: Abuja.
Teaching Assistant with Tuition waiver and stipend.
Deficit: 9k.

People of God, I didn't want to post anything about this very weird experience of mine initially but I thought Bleep it, just share it with these people, they've been good to you. They can learn ( or unlearn as the case may be). So here goes the event:

The VO: Next
Me: I walked up to him. He even greeted me first and I responded appropriately.
VO: Please your documents and port
(I forwarded them to him)
VO: He starts typing. He typed and typed and typed and typed.
Me: I waited patiently initially but then after 30 seconds of typing without any verbal interaction I started some shifting movements to get his attention.
VO: So I can see here you have a graduate assistantship award.
Me: Yes, but it's actually a Teaching Assistantship that comes with... (VO cuts me here)
VO: It's OK and continues typing.
Me: At this point I was getting worried. In my mind I was begging him : please ask me something, anything.. Pleaseeee. I have waited 3 months to secure this date.. Please look at meeeeee. (Crying inside)
VO: (Coughs) Unfortunately at this time you're not eligible for a visa but you may apply at a later date. ( es the dreaded blue paper)

People of God, I was stunned. Like am I dreaming? What just happened. All my mock interview preparations and sleepless nights wasted.

Let me give you all the background. My school resumed classes for fall on August 23. I told the school I couldn't secure a date o, that I want to defer to January 2022. The school say I should calm down, they will allow all international students to resume late until September 20. As a proof of that extension, the school issued me a new i20 with this new information written in all CAPS in the remark section of the i20: "WE WILL ALLOW THIS STUDENT RESUME LATE UP TO SEPTEMBER 20" .
In addition, they also issued me a letter to present at the embassy and at point of entry into the United States.
But as you can all see, I didn't say pim at the embassy today. I have not fully comprehended this experience.

Moral lesson: No matter how qualified you think you are or how packaged your documents are or how sharpened your tongue is, pray for good luck. I was very very unlucky today but I still thank God.

Something must be wrong somewhere in your documents. Or in your profile. Please veterans around here like Fairheart, Walspring to review your profile with them. It is highly surprising and strange you were not asked any question. But you should review your profile, prepare again and re-apply. Best of luck.

Good morning, my school resumes In January but all the appointment dates I see at the portal is from February. How do I get the emergency appointment.

Pls kindly advise

As instructed on the US Visa website, schedule the earliest appointment you can find on the portal (or wait, and keep checking). Then when you are within 60 days of your resumption, apply for emergency appointment. If all your documents are in order, you should be given a date before resumption.

Good morning everyone,
Most of the schools have been applying to do exempt me from English Language requirements.
However, I would like to know if ToEFL or IELTS won't be a requirement for Visa processing?
Thanks.

Once the school that issues the I-20 is satisfied with your level of proficiency, it remains for you to verbally convince the VO you can speak, read and write well.

Unless the VO is in doubt, TEST results do not seem to be primary requirements for visa issuance. Good luck.

Guys when filling the Ds-160 should the person sponsporing the trip be the same person on i-20 as sponspor? or can put up a different name on the DS-160 as the person sponsporing the trip? cause i'm confused

The information on your I-20 should tally with the information on your DS-160. The entity sponsoring the trip should be the same on all documents. The financial information you used to obtain your I-20 should be what you present at the embassy. Good luck.

Guys, please I need answer to this questions, is am very sorry for derailing...
My husband, myself and our toddler(6months) is going to a uni in USA based on full scholarship and stipend for him.
Before we move I want to know if it's a good decision to go together at once.
Can I have the opportunity of working even if it's menial jobs and can he have the chance to work or study with research will take most of his time?
Guys, please advise me
Cc; FutureSenator
Kpolli

Congratulations to you and your family on the scholarship and stipend. I wish you guys more success in the US. Though you can decide to go together or go separately (if you have something delaying you), my opinion is for you to apply for visa together.

As Kpolli mentioned, you can not work on your visa (F2). Your husband is on F1 and I assume, he already works/research during the semester. He can also get paid internship/assistantships during summer.

Since you are currently taking care of a baby, it might not be very convenient for you to put out applications. Once you are strong enough, you can look out for scholarship/assistantship opportunities too in the same school your husband is (or nearby schools). If you get one, you will be able to convert your F2 to funded F1 and make some money to the family, while also getting another degree.

Best of luck with any decision you take.

F1 Visa approved minutes ago at Abuja Embassy
First application
MS Civil Engineering at ***
Full funding, no deficit.

January 5, 7.30AM

Got to the embassy like 6.45am, met a lot of touts outside. They kept asking me "have you arranged your documents? have you done this, have ou done that..I just ignored all of them. Went in around 7am. The cgi lady asked for I-20, DS-160, appointment confirmation and port. She checked everything and told me my port photograph is too small and does not meet specification. I went outside to take another port for 2,500naira. 4 ports for 2,500 naira!! Anyway I had no option but to take it. I went back in to the queue

Met one black guy who checked port and i-20 and collected the photograph. Next is one fine lady at window 4 where we did biometrics.. waited for another 30minutes before I was called to window 9.

Meanwhile the 3 applicants before me - denied, approved, denied. I have done mental calculation that the next in the series is approved, and that is me, (PS: the candidate after me was denied too.)

VO: Good morning, please your port and I-20.
Me: Okay ( documents).

VO; So what do you do currently in Nigeria
Me: I work as a Project Engineer with xyz company. My job function involves facility construction and upgrade, warehouse constructions, infrastructure developments and software deployment.

VO: Okay, fine. Why Tennessee.
Me: Ah Tennessee perfectly aligns with my research interests. I checked out a lot of schools online and spoke with a lot of professors, but this particular professor working on application of artificial intelligence and machine learning in transportation systems fits my needs. I will be working on developing models to predict congestion and traffic control.

VO: Okay, are you married, do you have kids
Me: Oh yes I am married, but no kids. My wife is currently running her undergraduate degree here in Nigeria.

VO; Is she going with yo?
Me: oh no. She can't abandon her degree. She will complete her degree while I am running my program and I will be coming to check her every couple of months.

VO: Good, what was your undergraduate degree
Me: I have a bachelors degree in Civil Engineering from the University of xxxx in Nigeria.

VO; Good, when is your program starting
Me: 13 January next year, oh sorry, this year.

VO; (pauses for some seconds and type furiously, I was praying and calling unto God in my mind): Your visa is recommended for approval. Take this slip, it contains instruction on how to pick up your port. It usually takes 2-4 business days for istrative processing, but could be more or less. Thank you and enjoy your trip
Me: Thank you and enjoy your trip too (well I didn't know why I said that.. maybe it was joy lol)

.......

I was awake since 3am praying unto God and seeking His blessings. I believe it is just pure grace. Not by my power or might. All thanks to God. Please wish me safe trip to Tennessee!

VO: Where else has he travelled to?
Wife: This is the first time he left the country

Easiest way to get a visa is if you are
-Married
-Have travel history (even if it’s one country abroad)
-Have good funding with little deficit

If you ain’t got this three things, your visa na just try your luck

This is very wrong.

You can get visa whether you are single or married, whether you have travel history or not, and even without funding.

In fact, if you check the history of this thread from Part 1, you will see that most successful applicants have little funding, have no travel history and are not even married.

@MelaninGemstone, If you have issues with your visa application, we are all here to help you..

Please tell them oh. Funding is is not common for Masters level. It is only just in the past few years that I started hearing about Masters students getting funding. Previously, as in more than a decade ago, it was a rarity to find Masters students with funding. Funding is usually reserved for PhD students.

A lot of difference in ten years.

I personally know over 20 masters student with funding - in the USA and other countries. With this limited sample, It is safe to say there are funding opportunities for MS students too.

Good morning, guys. I have a deficit of about $10,000 after my GA. My sponsor wants to pay the whole deficit into my domiciliary .

Will this be an issue at the embassy when I present my statement?

Large one-time deposits are always problematic and seek too much attention. I suggest you rather go with your sponsor's bank statement (the VO might even end up not checking it).

US Visa secured

Canada can go and rest
I guess i start saving up for the rainy days cos US VISA no be the endgame..

My humble advice to future candidates
1. Always answer your questions simple and clear. Long answers are a turn off for them
2.No need to fake accent, cos it would just put unnecessary pressure and you may end up saying what you wish not to say
3. Always be relaxed, don't do like you having a job interview. see it like as if you telling your friend about your goals and achievements
4. Also don't allow those touts to exhort telling you to print unnecessary documents, the documents you need are stated already. Those guys chop up to 10k from me

Congratulations.

So people really do fake accents? That is surprising cheesy

Guys, please I have an issue and I need an advice

I just got my visa

I’m going for PhD in Chemistry

My PhD program starts this summer (June 21)

Problem is, I can’t travel in June, I wanna travel first week of July.

I’ve told my professors via email that I’ll be resuming late and there is no problem on the schools end. I wanna know if this will cause a problem on the POE.

Reason I won’t be able to travel early is because we have a family land court case adjournment on the 27th of June, and I have to be present in court to lay some facts as I’m the first son.

If I’m in the US by then, omo, our opponents go win us.

Hello,

May the best person win in court.

It depends on your I-20. If your program start date is different from the first day of class, then you may arrive not later than the first day of class. Now if that date (first week of July) is later than the first day of class, you should your school (international office) and ask for written permission. In some cases, a new I-20 might need to be issued.

In summary, if you are arriving in the US after the first day of class ( start of class on I-20), you might need to show additional documentation at the point of entry, that you have permission from your school.

Regards.

Hello everyone
I had a denial last week
Please can anyone help identify my weak points from this transcript

VO-Have you travelled before
Me-Benin republic
VO-You are going for Master's in management
Me- Yes
What was your previous masters?
Me-ing
VO- what year
Me-2017-2018
VO- why did you choose grand canyon?
Me-i find them very credible and their course program fits my career
VO- who is funding
Me-I'm self funded
VO- which other school did you apply to?
Me -Texas A&M

NB: My actual course of study is Business Analytics, but on the i-20 my school code for their business courses for the sevis system is management science, so I don't know if the VO officer felt I was doing business management after a previous master in ing..
Please gurus help a brother.
What can I do to improve my chances my next time

Hello Olomojola,

Seems you were not prepared for your interview. There is a thin line between vague responses and wordy responses, you have to find a balance.

Next time, at the point when the officer tries to confirm that you are going for a masters in management - volunteer the full information. Tell him your masters is in Business Analytics and explain like you explained above. When you are asked why you chose a school - you should have very specific and elaborate reasons.

When you walk up to a Visa Officer, there a few honest questions running through his mind. Do you really want to travel for study purposes? How much do you know about your course? Will you return to Nigeria after graduation? How intelligent are you? How are you paying for your trip, or how do you plan to pay?

Depending on your responses and the officer's conviction, your interview can be extremely short or extended. Even though you might not be asked all those questions, prepare to answer them all. It is just like any other exam you wrote in college - based on your preparation, you can estimate a score even before stepping into the hall!

Cheers.

Good evening all,

Please a quick one from successful visa approved .

* If I have the capacity to sponsor my estimated bill of about $28k, can I go ahead and submit/use it or I should change sponsor to dad or uncle (whichever)? Is there any implication for presenting such s.o.a because you're single?
PS: Working and have been saving for this for some years now.

* Must I use the same s.o.a submitted during application of I-20 from the school and also present it at the visa interview (still valid for 6 months)?
Reason is, will the school send a copy of my s.o.a to the embassy?

Thanks in anticipation of your responses.

Regards

It is quite tricky, but there is no rule stopping you from funding yourself. Quite a couple of guys got their visa approved without any funding.

The reason why parents/companies are suggested is for home ties. But the argument against this is people with funding from their school. If you have a verifiable source of income, and substantial amount in your after COA, and your school already approved this (as stated on your I-20), you sure can use that for your interview.

The catch here is you will need to prove to the officer that you won't become a liability to the USA. I mean, you have plans to return to homeland post-graduation.

Cheers.

Hello @ fairheart, walspring, lagosismyhome, twoods and other gurus in the house please i need your thoughts on this. My visa got delayed twice now, the COA of the school I used before was $34,000 without any scholarship and ever since then I have not made any changes on my ds-160. Now I am using a new school and I have already transferred my sevis , I was offered $5000 of scholarship and I am having a deficit of $20,000. I’m going for undergraduate, now my sponsor want to pay the $20,000 deficit to the school to make sure I am not having any financial problem at all. I don’t know if this is allowed, because we wanted to just pay up the money all at once to make sure that is been cleared. Can I be able to pay my school fees before going to the school?

.

Hello,

You should not do that.

You should not pay school fees, pay for accommodation or book a flight before having a visa. Your visa is your approval to proceed without which you shouldn't commit.

There are many respected Nairalanders here that will help you review your specific situation. If you are not able to post full details, one of them privately and they will give you personalized guidance on interviews, steps to take etc.

You cannot force the hand of a VO by committing funds, in fact, I dare to say that will have a negative impact on your interview.

Please advise, I just got a Fully Funded US PhD scholarship Offer but I have one month to put to bed
The program is expected to start by Fall September 2021.

Please help

I don't how to go about the visa applications.

I do not know your specific concerns but based on what you shared, you have approximately 5 months between now and your program start date. (Mid-April to late-September)

First, giving birth in the US can be pretty expensive. I wouldn't know if that is covered in your funding, or you have the funds to pay that.

Secondly, your EDD is between 30-40days. Unless you are specifically flying to give birth, I wouldn't medically advise you to get on a plane now or start worrying too much about visa stuffs. Your baby needs you to be at rest.

All other things being equal, after delivery, you will still have roughly three months before your program start date. Even if you decide to wait 2 months postnatal, you can get all visa issues within one month and arrive in the US with your baby.

You should accept the offer. Focus on your baby for now, Then come back to Nairaland after delivery.

I wish you a safe and sound delivery.

Please can a person use a pension statement like a retirement savings statement in place of a regular bank statement for students visa at the embassy. It was accepted by the school for I-20 but I’m not certain about the embassy especially since funds in the regular bank doesn’t cover the esteemed cost but that of the RSA does.

I have not heard of anyone using a pension statement for proof of funds. A pension fund, unlike fund in a bank , is not readily accessible. You cannot withdraw your pension to pay for your school fees. As such, I will assume that you cannot use it for visa interview.

Hello,

Hi guys,

Please I have a sister down south in Arizona. She went for studies and later converted her status to Legal Permanent Residency as she got married. . Would this be a problem for me during my interview?

Thank you.

The PhD program is fully-funded and has nothing, absolutely nothing to do with your sister.

I believe your interview will be very short and successful. You are going for a technical PhD program and you are fully funded by your school. Simple and to the point.

If the VO asks about anyone abroad, then you should tell him about your sister who lives in Arizona. If he doesn't ask, personally I do not think that information is relevant. I don't see the VO asking though.

VO: why are you going to the USA?
Me: to obtain a masters degree in computer science at Maharishi international university.

VO: why this school?
Me: I choose this school for three reasons, 1. Because of the programming language thought(Java programming) 2. Because of the financial aid I was offered 3. Bottomline... you are not ready for the interview. Your responses are far too long (you have 3 minutes or less) and clearly insincere. Any respectable VO will read through you in a few seconds. You need to revise your responses - I suggest just sticking to the truth would be a good start.

4. After schooling and working as assistant teacher in the school can school extend my visa and also give a working permit?
.

Hello Sir,

I do not know if you are a politician in real life, but you sound very political. It isn't bad to be a bit political, but please be careful that you are not sending the wrong vibes. Just ask your questions honestly, and people will reply honestly. It is absolutely unnecessary to add this "If not for people like u here we may not even get some certain things right."

Anyway, all your questions have been perfectly answered. Just to expand on question 4:

MS Students in the US have opportunities to engage in T and OPT. T, aka curricular training, is only done before you graduate and includes any internship you signed up for. You can work a maximum of 20hrs every week during regular semesters, while you can work upto 40hrs during the summer semester.

Now to your question.

1. After your graduate, you can apply for OPT, aka optional training. This allows you to work for up-to 12months after graduation (1 year). If the cumulative sum of T you did during study is more than 12 months, the excess may be deducted from the number if months you have for OPT.

2. If your program of study is STEM, you can then apply for OPT extension, which gives you additional 24months (2 years) to work after graduation. Making it cumulatively 3years of worktime.

NOTE: Ts, OPTs are all subject to approval from your school, and must be in line of your course of study. Some schools have further regulations.

So for non-STEM courses, you can work for additional 1year after graduation, and for STEM courses, additional 3years after graduation. If you are lucky, or you work hard, or both, you will find an employer to sponsor you for H-1B Visa (non-immigrant worker) either during your OPT or just as you are concluding the OPT. Then, it is welcome to USA wink

Hello everyone. Is there any app like piggyvest but for usa residents? Or anyway one can save and invest money in the US. TIA

I think you can use apps like fidelity - but you can't be doing day trading like Twoods mentioned.

Caveat: Investing is risky - you can loose all your money.

Who knows information regarding US Student visa renewal?

I believe your DSO/ISO will be the best person to talk to.

Hello friends, I'm new here.
Got Fall ission and graduate assistantship, with a full tuition waiver, living expenses, housing and flight.
My Nigerian Uni seems to be delaying the sending of my transcript to the US, and of course without it, they will not release the I-20. US school intends to email the I-20 so I'm sure to get it with 48 hours of transcript getting there. I need that I-20 like yesterday...
I can already see interview dates in Lagos showing January 2022 (too late), and Abuja showing July, still too late. I don't want emergency.
Please anyone with useful info here should help a brother- connect, advice, etc. Still pressing exams and records to do the needful though. I feel like I should travel down there and gatecrash them till they send it. I want it to leave this week.

Bros,

You know what to do already. Better still, look for agents to do the needful. You can mention the Nigerian University here and you will be surprised people have very good agents that will accelerate the transcript process. Village people will not succeed on your matter o. Amen.
