It was learned that the bridge caved in affecting two lorries conveying goods that were on the bridge when the incident occurred.

According to an eyewitness, drivers and conductors of the two lorries, escaped death by a whisker.

Further checks revealed that one lane of the dual-carriageway had been blocked by the debris of the collapsed bridge forcing motorists plying the road to divert through alternative routes for their journey.

Security operatives, officials of the Federal and Enugu State Ministries of Works, Federal Road Maintenance Agency, and Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) were sighted within the area to assess the situation as well as to assist the road s plying the alternative routes.

Meanwhile, Governor Peter Mbah has called for a new road maintenance model to guarantee better condition and longevity of Nigerians roads, regretting that the current model had failed woefully.

Dr. Mbah made the call when he visited the site of the collapsed bridge between the New Artisan flyover and the NNPC Mega Station along the Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway.

Fielding questions from newsmen after the first-hand inspection of the scene of the disaster, Mbah who thanked God that no life was lost despite the magnitude of the incident, urged the federal government to consider a concession of all the federal roads in each state to the state governments for proper maintenance in conjunction with the private sector.

“I think the question should be whether the current model of federal road maintenance is working or not; and I think that is the bigger question that we must ask.

“Today, we are here witnessing a tragedy that has just occurred. We are fortunate enough that no life was lost, but this could have been prevented entirely. So, the people can no longer ply this route because of this tragedy. This shows clearly that we do not have a sound federal road maintenance model.

“The bridge collapse didn’t just happen. These threats could have been identified if we had routine or regular maintenance.

“Perhaps the way to go is to find a way to concession these roads to the states. The states need to take charge of the roads within their domains and there has to be a conversation around the funding models”.

The said bridge collapsed on Monday, leaving commuters stranded.

Meanwhile, in a statement signed by the Enugu State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Gerald Otiji, the government has advised commuters to use Nza Street through New Haven or ply Ogui Road and Abakaliki Road to their various destinations, while the authorities come up with measures for immediate repair of the failed section of the bridge.

Mr. Obi was in Enugu today for the burial former senatorial candidate of the party, Barr. Oyibo Chukwu, who was murdered by suspected unknown gunmen shortly before the February 25 general election.

Mr. Peter Obi who made it clear that he was in Enugu on a condolence visit to the family of the deceased, only said some of the candidates of the party from other states, including Enugu, ed him for the condolence visit and burial ceremony.

According to Peter Obi, Labour Party may consider ing the party, warning that only those with competence, capacity, character, comion, track records and outstanding career outside politics should be voted for.

Despite the Supreme Court order against CBN directives regarding N500 and N1,000 notes, Ndi Enugu Residence are still sceptical about accepting them.

On Friday, March 3, 2023, the Supreme Court reversed the CBN order suspending the circulation of N500 and N1000 notes as legal tender in Nigeria.

Traders, transporters, and others wary of old notes as apex court extended the shelf lives of the two highest denominations to December 31, 2023.

The traders say they are waiting for a directive from either President Muhammadu Buhari or CBN Governor Godwin Emefiele regarding the Supreme Court order.

Mohammed, a trader a meat butcher in New Artisan market, told Foxxymobile Agent who came to make enquiry why he refuse to sale cow and goat meat to residents in Enugu recall that he is terrified of accepting the old naira notes because of the silence of Buhari and CBN.

He said, with the policies and programmes that would be set up by his istration, Enugu youths could easily fit into the world of robotic science, artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality, mechatronics, e-commerce and Fintech that would give them an edge over others.

Dr Peter Mabh also stated that through key targeted policies and programmes including agriculture that he will grow the Gross Domestic Product of Enugu state for the next three to four years, from the current level of $4.4billion in 2022 to $30 billion.”

Dr Peter Mbah promised to bring peace and security and said that it would be achieved “through a three-pronged intervention, firstly, an integrated programme to accelerate youth employment for all Enugu citizens.

Secondly, integrated rural development programmes and thirdly, community policing and inclusion of all citizens in the governance of the state.”

The campaign train distributed customized exercise books , T-shirts and face-caps to constituents along the roads, streets, markets and neighborhood structures in Enugu North, Enugu south, Isi Uzo, Nkanu East and Nkanu West local government areas.

Enugu NPC releases salary, allowances for 2023 population, housing census ad hoc staff in Enugu State Nigeria. From Foxxymobile Nigeria.

The National Population Commission (NPC) has outlined the salary and allowances structure for its ad hoc staff who will be involved in the conduct of the 2023 Population and Housing Census.


The remuneration is divided into two categories – allowances and main salary.

In the category of allowances, according to the Director of Census Department, Mrs Evelyn Arinola Olanipekun, the NPC ad hoc staff will receive three types of allowances, namely; feeding allowance: (a) Specialised Workforce (SWF) – N2,000 per day x 13 days (three days of SWF and 10 days of state training). However, states that did not observe the first three days are exempted. Total N26,000. (b) State Facilitators: N2,000 per person, per day x 10 days. Total: N20,000

For the transport allowance it is N20,000 per person. Training allowance: (a) Trainer: N15,000 per day x 13 (SWF) and 10 (state facilitator) (b) Trainee: N10,000 per day x 13 (SWF) and 10 (state facilitator).


The commission said payment will be made twice for all categories, as follows: transport and feeding: N46,000 (SWF), N40,000 (state facilitators). Training allowance: trainer (SWF) – N195,000; trainee – N130,000; state trainers (facilitators) -N150, 000; trainees – 100,000.

It added that the above allowances would also apply to other categories such as enumerators and supervisors, but with a shorter number of training days and a slight reduction in the amount. On average, the total allowances for specialised workforce, facilitators, enumerators, supervisors, and other census functionaries range from N50,000 to N100,000.

NPC said that the main salary for NPC ad hoc staff will be paid after the completion of the census exercise. The average basic or main salary for each census functionary ranges from N50,000 to N250,000, depending on the position.

It summarised the salary and allowances for NPC ad hoc staff during the 2023 Population and Housing Census as follows: facilitators – N150,000 to N300,000; field coordinator – N140,000 to N280,000; quality assurance assistants/rovers – N130,000 to N280,000; supervisor – N130,000 to N230,000; enumerator – N100,000 to N220,000; monitoring and evaluation officer – N150,000 to N300,000.
