Enugu-Port Harcourt Expressway: Successful Controlled Explosion Conducted for Bridge Repair.
The Enugu government informed residents about a planned controlled explosion on the damaged bridge along the Enugu-Port Harcourt expressway as part of their repair efforts.

The exercise involves the anti-bomb unit of the police, zonal mines officers, and the explosive unit of the Department of State Services (DSS).

Residents were advised to be cautious and avoid unnecessary panic during this process.

The explosion aims to aid in restoring the failed bridge, and the announcement aimed to prevent panic among the citizens in the area and the entirety of Enugu.

Charging occurred on December 1st, 2023, at 2:00 pm, followed by blasting on December 2nd, 2023, at 3:00 am.

It was learned that the bridge caved in affecting two lorries conveying goods that were on the bridge when the incident occurred.

According to an eyewitness, drivers and conductors of the two lorries, escaped death by a whisker.

Further checks revealed that one lane of the dual-carriageway had been blocked by the debris of the collapsed bridge forcing motorists plying the road to divert through alternative routes for their journey.

Security operatives, officials of the Federal and Enugu State Ministries of Works, Federal Road Maintenance Agency, and Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) were sighted within the area to assess the situation as well as to assist the road s plying the alternative routes.

Meanwhile, Governor Peter Mbah has called for a new road maintenance model to guarantee better condition and longevity of Nigerians roads, regretting that the current model had failed woefully.

Dr. Mbah made the call when he visited the site of the collapsed bridge between the New Artisan flyover and the NNPC Mega Station along the Enugu – Port Harcourt Expressway.

Fielding questions from newsmen after the first-hand inspection of the scene of the disaster, Mbah who thanked God that no life was lost despite the magnitude of the incident, urged the federal government to consider a concession of all the federal roads in each state to the state governments for proper maintenance in conjunction with the private sector.

“I think the question should be whether the current model of federal road maintenance is working or not; and I think that is the bigger question that we must ask.

“Today, we are here witnessing a tragedy that has just occurred. We are fortunate enough that no life was lost, but this could have been prevented entirely. So, the people can no longer ply this route because of this tragedy. This shows clearly that we do not have a sound federal road maintenance model.

“The bridge collapse didn’t just happen. These threats could have been identified if we had routine or regular maintenance.

“Perhaps the way to go is to find a way to concession these roads to the states. The states need to take charge of the roads within their domains and there has to be a conversation around the funding models”.

The said bridge collapsed on Monday, leaving commuters stranded.

Meanwhile, in a statement signed by the Enugu State Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Engr. Gerald Otiji, the government has advised commuters to use Nza Street through New Haven or ply Ogui Road and Abakaliki Road to their various destinations, while the authorities come up with measures for immediate repair of the failed section of the bridge.

Some years ago, the University of Nigeria Teaching Hospital special project team approached the Deputy Senate President (Ike Ekweremmadu) to help them fast track the funding for a project in the Hospital though a government He asked to submit their proposal and they did, it was 400million for Renal Centre.


The N400m was to build the structure, procure equipment and train few doctors abroad for renal transplant and other special renal emergency training.

Ike Ekeremmadu asked them to double the money to N800m and the extra N400m will be for him to facilitate the release of the funds

Former governor and Senator representing Enugu East in the National Assembly, Chimaroke Nnamani, says he is still finding it difficult to process the betrayal exhibited by Enugu governor-elect, Peter Mbah, in the just concluded general elections.


Nnamani, who lost his senatorial re-election bid to Labour Party, said he was betrayed during the poll.

He said Ekweremadu, who owns several properties and had a staff of 80, “agreed to reward someone for a kidney for his daughter – somebody in circumstances of poverty and from whom he distanced himself and made no inquiries, and with whom, for his own political protection, he wanted no direct ”.

Davies added: “What he agreed to do was not simply expedient in the clinical interests of his daughter, Sonia, it was exploitation, it was criminal. It is no defence to say he acted out of love for his daughter. Her clinical needs cannot come at the expense of the exploitation of somebody in poverty.”

Ekweremadu, who denied the charge, told the court he was the victim of a scam. Obeta, who also denied the charge, claimed the man was not offered a reward for his kidney and was acting altruistically. Beatrice denied any knowledge of the alleged conspiracy. Sonia did not give evidence.

WhatsApp messages shown to the court revealed Obeta charged Ekweremadu 4.5m naira (about £8,000) made up of an “agent fee” and a “donor fee”.

Ekweremadu and Obeta itted falsely claiming the man was Sonia’s cousin in his visa application and in documents presented to the hospital.

Davies said Ekweremadu ignored medical advice to find a donor for his daughter among genuine family . He said: “At no point in time was there ever any intention for a family member close, medium or distant to do what could be paid for from a pool of donors.”

The judge, Mr Justice Jeremy Johnson, will sentence on 5 May.

The chief crown prosecutor, Joanne Jakymec, said: “This was a horrific plot to exploit a vulnerable victim by trafficking him to the UK for the purpose of transplanting his kidney.

“The convicted defendants showed utter disregard for the victim’s welfare, health and wellbeing and used their considerable influence to a high degree of control throughout, with the victim having limited understanding of what was really going on here.”

DI Esther Richardson, from the Metropolitan police’s modern slavery and exploitation command, said: “This is a landmark conviction and we commend the victim for his bravery in speaking against these offenders.”

Dr Peter Mbah of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP has been officially declared winner of the just concluded governorship election in the state by the Independent National Electoral Commission INEC.

This declaration became necessary following a review of votes from Nkanu East previously recorded for PDP which was adjusted from 30,350 to 16,956 while about 30,000 votes recorded for the Labour Party in Nsukka was validated by INEC.

Interestingly, the Governor elect His Excellency Peter Mbah was reported to have polled a total of 160,895 to defeat his closest rival Hon Chijioke Edeoga of the Labour Party who scored 157,552.

By this arrangement, the will of the electorates in Enugu State can be said to have been met by INEC.

Labour party in Enugu state has continued to take a big swing, taking over majority seats in the Enugu State House of Assembly.

The breakdown of the result shows that Governor Ugwuanyi lost his state constituency seat to Labour Party candidate.

It should also be recalled that out of 8 Federal House of Representatives seats in the state, Labour Party won 7, leaving PDP with only one seat.

In the Senatorial seats, Labour Party won 2 out of 3 district seats.

The governorship seat result is still under INEC scrutiny over alleged irregularities.

However, the margin of lead by the LP’s candidate which is about 15000 was bigger than the number of the people that were accredited to vote in Nkanu East.

So, even if you add the whole 7,453 accredited votes to the PDP, LP’s total votes will still be higher.

As you see, Labour Party has won virtually all the elections in Enugu state including seven out of eight House of Representatives and two senate seats out of the three senatorial positions.

It is therefore no doubt that Enugu state is now turing to a LP state.

The state House of Assembly election took place and it is still the same number of people who were accredited for the exercise.
