The Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Sunday urged legal professionals to reform and renovate the law profession in the country to meet international standards.

Osinbajo made the call at the inauguration ceremony of the Ultra Modern Sir Adetokunbo Ademola Dinning Hall of the Law School, Lagos.

The hall was remodeled and refurbished by the South Atlantic Petroleum Ltd. (SAPETRO), founded by a retired Chief of Army Staff, Gen. Theophillus Danjuma.

Osinbajo, a professor of law, said that the legal profession might continue to suffer serious decline and lose its pride of place in the affairs of the country, if fundamental reforms were not implemented.

“This is an institution where we teach the law, teach character and teach discipline. But the declining rate of law education in the country calls for concern.

“The Council of Legal Education is a statutory body charged with the responsibility of ensuring standards in the teaching and learning of legal education.

“I urge of the Council to ensure that the necessary restructuring and reorganization of the legal education sector is put in place to promote the Nigeria legal system, until it is at par with international standard.

“The laws guiding legal education in Nigeria needed to be updated to reflect the demands of the time. Changes are necessary to bring up the quality of legal education in this country,” he said.

Also, Mr Olanrewaju Onadeko, Director-General of the Nigerian Law School, said that the institution was special as it had trained many lawyers in the country.

“Most of the lawyers in Nigeria today, from the Chief Justice to the Magistrates, went through this school and they are making us proud,” he said.

For so long i have been wondering on this.. and then i decided to let it out because i guess i might not be the only one with this thoughts..

I really think the OPS on this thread Especially the Politics section, romance, crime and family sections do try a whole lot..
these people to me work more than the so called s and supermods if you ask me..
These humble Ops source for News not just news..TRENDING news, organise and post it here to update our fellow nairalanders and they will even be begging the Almighty mods to move it to the front page..

that is what i call SELFLESS SERVICE..because they aint getting paid nor any form of reward in anyway or kind. to my greatest view..these OPS are the one making Nairaland great and there should be like a compensation or kind given to them..

seun i believe pays the MODS and Supermods..he should otherwise find something to give and encourage these OPS. i mean they spend and burn their Megabytes and batteries just to update us..

Thats my opinion..Hope this post wont be REMOVED..

THANKS

Governor Akinwunmi Ambode of Lagos State says his istration is putting finishing touches to policies that will strengthen its economic ties with neighbouring countries, especially the French-speaking countries.

The governor said the policy was a strategy to expand the state’s frontiers to accommodate investors, adding that the government would ensure that such investments were secured.

Ambode said this during a visit of the Ambassador to Nigeria, Mr. Denys Gauer, to the Lagos House, Ikeja.

Gauer was accompanied by the Consulate General of and Head of Mission, Marcel Escure; Head of Regional Economic Department, Dominique Simon; and the Commercial Counsellor, Head of Regional Economic Department in Lagos, Mr. Francis Widmer.

Ambode said, “Lagos is a major commerce city, but we have not done enough to attract bilateral trade and relationship with most of the French-speaking countries.

“We have decided that we are going to expand relationship with our neighbours and other nations and that was why we decided to set up an Office of Overseas Affairs and Investments to establish a permanent structure that allows us to have good trading, economic opportunities and relationship with all our neighbours and other nations.

“I am excited that is interested in having more economic presence here. I am excited that Tafoo is planning to set up malls in Lagos. I am excited that Societe General Bank is coming back.”

Earlier, Gauer said was interested in Lagos because it was the economic capital of Nigeria, as well as West Africa.

He said more French companies were considering establishing their presence in Lagos.

He said, “The greatest part of French community in Nigeria is in Lagos, not in Abuja. Our companies are all here in Lagos. We have more than 50 offices of big French companies all established here in Lagos and more are coming.”

In a related development, Ambode received the Consul General of South Africa, Ambassador Mokgethi Monaisa, who was in Lagos House, Ikeja, to intimate him on the line up of activities to mark the birthday of the late South African icon, Dr. Nelson Mandela.

The governor said his istration would also extend the frontiers of trade and economic relations with South Africa.

Speaking earlier, Monaisa noted that South Africa-Nigeria relations had come a long way not just as trade partners but as brothers and sisters.

A former Governor of Adamawa State, Murtala Nyako, who is being prosecuted along with his son, Abdul-Aziz, and others for N29bn fraud charges, has threatened to sue the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission for defaming his character while opposing his application for bail on July 8.

Nyako, who spoke through one of his lawyers, Mohammed Bakari, in a statement on Wednesday, said the anti-graft agency had defamed his character by imputing that he had a hand in the death of two of its witnesses.

Bakari said it was untrue that the witnesses died mysteriously, describing the claim by EFCC’s prosecutor, Rotimi Jacobs (SAN), and the deposition in the commission’s counter-affidavit as “baseless, wicked and unfounded allegation.”

He explained that contrary to EFCC’s insinuation, two out of the 31 persons lined up as prosecution witnesses died in hospitals after battling with certain known ailments.

He said, “They neither died at the same time nor slumped and died as insinuated by the EFCC.

“While one died in a hospital in Abuja, the other died in a hospital in Yola shortly after he returned from a complicated medical treatment abroad.

“It is therefore unfair, unjust and uncharitable to accuse Nyako and his son of the death of the two persons, who as every human being has a sure date with death.

“This is totally unethical and iral Nyako has already decided to sue both the EFCC and their lawyer for defamation of character.”
