A Russian airstrike has destroyed a Ukrainian command post in Sumy Region, the Defense Ministry in Moscow has claimed, releasing footage of the overnight attack.

The strike took place early on Tuesday morning, the Russian military said. A supersonic Su-34 multipurpose jet deployed glide bombs against the target, which the ministry identified as operated by the 47th Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian ground forces.

The aerial footage shows a dark cityscape with a road junction, which RT understands is located in the middle of the city of Glukhov, some 15km from the Russian border. A massive explosion erupts from one of the buildings, which is marked as a car repair shop on Google Maps. A secondary explosion soon follows.

The Russian military claimed the site was used by the 47th Mechanized Brigade as a command post and munitions depot. Ukrainian military personnel, including officers in leadership positions, were killed in the strike, the report said.

The ministry did not estimate the number of Ukrainian casualties, but unverified reports by military-focused online news media claim as many as 90 troops were killed, including 30 higher up the chain of command than regular soldiers.

Sumy Region borders Russia’s Kursk Region, where Kiev is currently trying to seize territory in an offensive operation launched two weeks ago. One of the goals of the incursion, as stated by Ukrainian leader Vladimir Zelensky, is to establish a “buffer zone” to prevent Russian cross-border attacks. Moscow considers the incursion terrorist in nature, claiming that Kiev has been deliberately targeting civilians.

Ukrainian armor in Kursk Region goes up in smoke

Russian drones and attack helicopters have been targeting Ukrainian tanks, troops, and armored vehicles taking part in the incursion into Kursk Region, according to videos published by the Defense Ministry in Moscow.

Several thousand troops crossed the Russian border earlier this month, in a move that Moscow has described as an act of terrorism. Russia has responded with intense air and artillery strikes against the invaders.

“Losses of the Armed Forces of Ukraine for the day have been more than 330 service and 27 pieces of equipment, including four tanks, an IFV, three armored transports, 19 armored vehicles, eight vehicles, two artillery pieces, and three mortars,” the Russian military said in a statement on Monday.

Videos released by the Russian Defense Ministry show the continued destruction of Ukrainian forces in Kursk Region.

The first 20-second clip shows a tank still on its transport truck being spotted by a reconnaissance drone and destroyed by a Lancet loitering UAV.

Another video, also 20 seconds in duration, shows a Ukrainian armored personnel carrier positioned on a highway in what appears to be a roadblock. A Lancet strike set the APC ablaze, while the startled Ukrainian infantry scattered.

The third video of the day shows Mi-28 attack helicopters (NATO reporting name ‘Havoc’) taking off to fire rockets at both armored units and personnel of the invaders.

According to the Russian military, the helicopters used 9K121 Vikhr (Whirlwind; NATO reporting name ‘AT-16 Scallion’) guided missiles to carry out their mission successfully.

Russian air and missile strikes have been targeting Ukrainian troops both inside Kursk Region and in their rear, in Ukraine’s Sumy Region. According to Moscow, elements of the Ukrainian 22nd, 61st, and 115th Mechanized brigades, 80th and 82nd Assault brigades, and the 103rd and 129th Territorial Defense brigades, have been involved in the incursion.

Russia has been a good ally for Nigeria for decades, according to Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Mines and Steel Development Mary Ogbe, who said that Moscow would help the African nation restore its aluminum and steel mining sector.

“We have the steel plant located in Ajaokuta, in north central Nigeria, which was built by the Soviet Union about 44 years ago,” the top official told RT during the Russia-Africa forum in St. Petersburg. “Now we are here to collaborate with Russia to resuscitate that plant again, to make it work for [the] industrialization of Nigeria.”

The forum is providing the groundwork for more intense cooperation between Russia and Nigeria, according to Ogbe, who insisted the nations have developed a strong government-to-government relationship.

The partners are also planning to cooperate in sectors like health, agriculture, and infrastructure, the secretary added, saying the event brought Nigeria “very good responses,” including those focused on energy enhancement.

“There can’t be industrialization without power, and we are having this conversation. As we are here, we want to focus on Russia, and we are getting responses that we need,” she said.

Earlier, Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Petroleum Resources and OPEC Governor for Nigeria Gabriel Aduda revealed that the nation was interested not only in attracting Russian companies to energy projects, but also in obtaining appropriate technologies for extracting oil and gas.

The US has reportedly used a secretive authority called ‘127e’ to launch at least two dozen proxy wars since 2017, according to an article published on Friday by The Intercept. The outlet claims to have obtained never-before-seen documents and spoken to top officials with intimate knowledge of these programs.

The Intercept received the documents through the Freedom of Information Act, claiming these papers are the first ever official confirmation that at least 14 so-called ‘127e programs’ were active in the greater Middle East and Asia-Pacific regions as recently as 2020. In total, the Pentagon reportedly launched 23 separate 127e programs across the globe between 2017 and 2020, which cost US taxpayers $310 million.

The Intercept explains that 127e is one of several virtually unknown authorities granted to the Department of Defense by Congress over the last two decades. It authorizes US commandos to conduct “counterterrorism operations” in cooperation with foreign and irregular partner forces around the world with minimal outside oversight.

The program allows the US to arm, train, and provide intelligence to foreign forces. However, unlike traditional foreign assistance programs, which focus on building up local capacity in partner countries, 127e “surrogate forces” are expected to follow US orders and conduct Washington-directed missions against US enemies to achieve American goals, essentially serving as the Pentagon’s proxy armies.

According to the outlet, almost no information about these operations is ever shared with any of Congress or State Department officials. It is generally unknown where these operations are conducted, their frequency, targets, or even the identity of the foreign forces the US cooperates with to carry them out.

Critics of the programs warn that they could lead to unanticipated military escalation and engage the US in over a dozen conflicts around the world, since 127e does not allow for any oversight or input from foreign affairs officials.

The outlet notes that although the latest batch of documents sheds more light on the 127e program, it still remains mostly unknown to both the public and of Congress, who almost never receive any reports pertaining to the program.

A government official familiar with the program, who requested anonymity to discuss it, told The Intercept that most congressional staffers don’t even have the clearance to view 127e reports, and those who do rarely ask for them.

“It was designed to prevent oversight,” he explained.

Stephen Semler, a co-founder of a US foreign policy think tank, told The Intercept that the Pentagon prefers to run its operations with minimal oversight, input or bureaucracy from Congress and has done so for many years. “The Special Operations community likes autonomy a lot,” he explained to the outlet, adding that “the problem is this stuff is so normalized.”

“There should be more attention paid to these train-and-equip authorities, whether it’s special forces or [Department of Defense] regular, because it’s really kind of a PR-friendly way to sell endless war,” Semler concluded.

REPORTS: U.S. iral Surrenders to Russia in Mariupol, Ukraine
Numerous reports have been circulating much of today (Sunday, May 15, 2022) claiming that a U.S. Military Commander surrendered to Russian forces from the Azovstal Steel Mill in Mariupol, Ukraine. As of 6:17 PM EDT, a photo purported to be U.S. Navy iral Eric Olson, has been released allegedly showing the iral under arrest by Russian troops.

The photo, featured above, is claimed to be iral Eric T. Olsen.

Eric Thor Olson (born January 24, 1952) is a retired United States Navy iral who last served as the eighth Commander, U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) from July 2, 2007 to August 8, 2011.

He previously served as Deputy Commander, U.S. Special Operations Command from 2003 to July 2007. Olson was the first Navy SEAL ever to be appointed to three-star and four-star flag rank, as well as the first naval officer to be USSOCOM's combatant commander.

He took command from Army General Bryan D. Brown in 2007.[1] Brown and Olson had served together at the SOCOM headquarters in Tampa for four years.

He retired from active duty on August 22, 2011 after over 38 years of service. He relinquished command of SOCOM to iral William H. McRaven the same day.

There is also news of Canadian, French, and Turkish military officers still hiding inside tunnels beneath the Azovstal Steel Mill in Mariupol.

What these men were allegedly doing there and who sent them there, is not yet known.

If confirmed by the Pentagon, the massive question this raises is why are U.S. military officers, and the military officers from other NATO countries, inside Ukraine at all, and who authorized them to participate in waging undeclared war upon Russia?

US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen said on Thursday that a complete European ban on Russian oil and gas imports would “clearly” raise global oil prices and may inflict harm on Europe and other parts of the world.

Speaking to reporters following a meeting with Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal and Finance Minister Sergiy Marchenko in Washington, Yellen said that such a ban could ultimately cause more harm than good.

“It could actually have very little negative impact on Russia, because although Russia might export less, the price it gets for its exports would go up,” she said, as quoted by AFP.

Yellen’s warning comes as major European countries, including , have been calling for a complete stop to Russian energy imports. This month, the EU approved a ban on Russian coal, but could not reach an agreement on an oil and natural gas embargo.

Berlin said on Wednesday that it will stop importing oil from Russia by the end of this year. A stoppage of gas imports is tougher for , which relies heavily on Russian supplies. Moscow provides around 40% of the EU’s natural gas and around a third of the bloc’s oil.
