This idea of using death as a form of punishment is entirely barbaric and has no place in the modern world.

Help me tell them o! I dont understand these muslims (extremists) and their laws and rules about killing those who have converted or 'insulted' islam etc. Anyone can convert from Christianity to anything or even tear the pages of the bible 100 times and use to wipe their behinds. Dozens of shows/cartoons/jokes have been used to insult christianity/Jesus and not one Christian has killed another because of it. Not one Christian will bat an eyelid in protest, talkless of issuing a fatwa or demonstrating and killing other human beings.

I think Islam should be modernized to cater for and give room to basic human rights. grin

Funny, one of my closest friends, who is almost a 'brother' is a muslim. He is the most liberal muslim i have ever known. . . I wish all muslims are like him. To show you how liberal he is, he wants to marry a christian and says he is not going to force her to convert to Islam. He says that she can continue with her Christianity

Just got back to into the UK from Houston and LA. Those places never cease to amaze me. The road networks there are excellent. Flyovers and roads that are several hundred metres above ground level. . . with several levels of roads above each other. . .

Our leaders are just idiots. They travel to these places everyday and do not learn anything. After enjoying the comfort and beauty of the US infrastructure, they come back to Nigeria to terrorize the poor citizens on our narrow death traps called roads. Its a shame, a big shame

That's why everybody should strive to be his own boss.
Even if one has a job now, always plan for the future. Plan to start your own business.

It is a fact of life that everybody can not be his own boss. If all of us are our own bosses, who will work for us when we are our own boss?

FINALLY! Its about time the blacks wake up to start doing things that will make us proud. Up until now, we only hear of Indian and Pakistani businesses and so on. All we hear about the blacks is that they love to fight and 'kill' each other.

I often say that during my stint as an MBA student in the UK, i wondered how many blacks there were in Snr Management position in corporate UK. I never one day saw a black face as an MD of a large institution like HSBC, BARCLAYS ETC. Well okay, the position of MD is even a bit 'too high'. I never heard of Black Executive Directors, Regional Managers, Snr Consultants, etc. There are however Indians, Chinese and Japanese (maybe because these ones manage their countries multinationals in the UK) and some other Asians in these high positions.

It is good though that we are beginning to run our own black enterprises. Maybe slowly, we (the blacks) would continually evolve to become as large as the Mittals, Tata's and so on.

As i am a well educated and forward thinking dude working in Britain, i intend to this entrepreneural group soon and very soon. I am getting tired of working for Mama Charlie daily (She and others dey chop my tax well well). Lol

Adenuga was a beneficiary of IBB's regime just like Dangote was a beneficiary though in a crooked way of OBJ's regime.
Do we then portend that Dangote is OBJ's front?

True. I was one of those who thought that Adenuga was IBB's front. More recent events have made me align my thinking to yours.
As far as i am concerned, Adenuga works hard for his business and money and shuns all forms of slothfulness. He does not favour limelight, give away money recklessly and seemingly make un neccessary political statements, voluntarily or otherwise

To me the worst govt during the last tenure/obasanjo regime is Lucky Igbinedion of Edo state. He brought edo state 8 years backward with nothing to show for it. Whats is your own opinion, who do you think is the worst?

Exactly. . . i completely agree wit you

What kind of silly governor is in that state? What is the economic potential of the state to generate enough business/finance to justify the location of an International Airport in the state? I dont mean to be flippant, but does the state even need a local airport? How often is that local airport being used, if it has one?

What an introduction.
Hopefully, with the respect that Atedo Peterside has, people may begin to give Sanusi some leeway to do his work.

I used to be a very frequent flyer, and flew so many different airlines that i lost count. Virgin, SAA, BA, Lufthansa, Klm, Continental, Flybe etc (on the international side). Locally and within Africa, I have flown bellview, chanchangi, Slok, Camair, SAA, Aero, Virgin Nigeria.

One thing i have tried to do thus far is to fly ONLY International Airlines on international long haul flights. Airlines like Bellview and co are a no no. I was to travel to DRCongo once and was told to fly with SAA (6hrs). We would have landed in South Africa first and then i would have gotten a connecting flight to Kinshasa (2hrs). I decided to try Camair (Cameroon Airlines) cos it had a shorter time span (4hrs). Mistake. They substituted with Slok and were over 3 hours late. When they eventually came, they decided to do the Molue run and land in every country between Nigeria and Kinshasa (about 4 stopovers). While this was happening, there were no apologies and no food. Mind you, the flight was supposed to be a straight flight.

However (unfortunately) as a Nigerian, i always take what i can get - in of customer service. I have flown these international guys internationally, and have been very dissapointed. I have received the kind of treatment you received with the bellview airlines but maybe not as bad. On Virgin Atlantic once, we flew 3 hours out of Heathrow and the plane developed a fault midair. I dont know about airline rules and all that but would you believe that the pilot flew back to Heathrow - another 3 hours in a faulty plane - while the plane shook and jerked all the way? if that was not bad enough, their engineers embarked on a 'repair' process IN THE DARK after we landed and we sat in the plane for another 2 - 3 hours. They did all this without any SINCERE apologies.
Of course, people started grumbling and murmuring and i laughed to myself thinking, 'how many of them get any better service in our society here in Nigeria'? Our customer service levels are very very poor.

I do agree that it is difficult for a lot of businesses to keep up to 100% excellent service all the time hence, i give them a little 'leeway' many times - when i think they are falling short, That said, i would like to say that the service i receive on the Nigerian owned businesses is the worst so far - and i am not saying this to make people laugh. There is something about our customer service that is very poor. The hostesses always talk to you as if they are doing you a favour. Even when you find them on Virgin Atlantic flights, they always have that attitude of 'i am better than you' and try to talk down at you  atimes.

However my bros, if you are on long haul flights, always try to stick with the international carriers. The probability that you will get poor service is lower than if you fly bellview

That would be at the discretion of Jarus

Oh, did not see that. Jarus is already using it.

But seriously, i think people like Momodu should be told to shut up. Why is he trying to move from praise singing to critical political and social analyses? I have the sneaky feeling that he is writing all these things now in the bid to make himself available - one day soon - for political office.

We should not be surprised come 2011, if Dele Momodu runs for office (governor, senate, house of reps etc) somewhere. Worst case is that he becomes the mouthpiece of someone in power - like Segun Adeniyi is doing for Yar' Adua.

[li] Number two is this whole EFCC bit. What exactly is EFCC's role in this? Can't they first investigate before indictment? That's how it is done in civilized countries, rather than bursting in gung-ho into every place, arresting and declaring wanted, left-right-and-center.[/li]
[/list]

Lol. I have to agree with you my guy. I am not saying that what EFCC is doing is wrong, but we know our people. It is one of two things

1) If these high and mighty people get wind of it that they are being investigated, they will dissapear or

2) They will use all power available to them to squash that investigation, making it come to nothing. This gives reason to think that EFCC's method of Arrest - Investigate instead of Investigate - Arrest is the best.

This naming and shaming and arresting seems to be the best for some people

@SBO and Jarus:

Seems like you guys are not the only ones wanting to reply Momodu, concerning his articles in his so called column.
While i understand that being a columnist is a very demanding responsibility, with having to creatively think of what to write daily/weekly/monthly, it is no excuse to continually pen meaningless and un-intelligent articles. I am a frequent 'browser' of Momodu's articles and can honestly say that his articles are all the same, predictable and quite elementary to say the least. With some of his famous lines such as, 'my friend. . .', my brother. . . ', 'Uncle this and Aunty that', his articles end up being more of name dropping exercises than informative and analytical pieces. He mostly seeks to inform us about his globetrotting, from Ghana to the USA to Uk etc, than give practical, REAL PRACTICAL steps as to how our country can be Changed.

Like Jarus also stated Momodu's devotion to the 'saintliness' of MKO and benevolence of Adenuga are not lost on many of us. All his articles must have some reference to MKO otherwise, that article is not seen as complete. Apart from these two behemoths, his relationship with all other moneybags in Nigeria has not gone un-noticed. Apart from these moneybags, his 'hand - in - glove' relationship with people in power is noted. More frequent statements like, 'When i saw with Aunty Dora at. . .' or 'At a party i sat between Ndukwe and. . .'. As far as i am concerned, he is just an avid name dropper and a celebrity sycophant.

In summary, i have nothing against this guy, as i it that he is doing what he has to do to survive in the 'jungle' called Nigeria. One thing i can say though (like i mentioned in another thread) is that he should stick to celebrity journalism - publishing and maintaining ovation and not try to insult the rest of us with his 'serious and analytical' articles. Many of us would respect him much more that way, afterall, i it that i love the colour and glossy outlook of his ovation magazine - which has often glorified those who have raped us.

when did being in debt become a financial/economic crime?

I am not a financial guru, but i am guessing that if you take a loan (especially doing so without due process) and refuse to pay back, it is a crime.
Epiphany(m): 10:31am On Aug 25, 2009
Bros, our problem is legion.
As deb has said, it starts from us, the people. Way forward is GOOD LEADERSHIP. History has taught us that people in general, want a good leader, someone who will tell them what to do, when to do it and how to do it. They want someone to show them a vision, to lead them in the right (or wrong) direction. Before we start arguing about this, lets look at the example of Singapore and Lee Kuan Yew. Adolf Hitler and the Germans (even though he was the cause of world war 2, he built an industrialised and facilitated the manufacture of cars, planes, industries, etc)
Epiphany(m): 10:20am On Aug 25, 2009
Hahahahahahhahaha. Everyone seems to think what i am thinking. This guy is an ass kisser all the way.
I have read most of his articles, not because i find them informative, but because i just want to laugh sometimes. The guy is a chronic name dropper and a 'friend' to those who have wrecked Nigeria. I sometimes feel that most of what he writes is written to fill space. He should stick to what he is good at - celebrity journalism - and stop trying to write serious stuff.

Whether Abacha died from his 'sickness' or not, the topic is that the medical services in this country should be upgraded and utilized. . . instead of our leaders jetting out of the country anytime they need to have a 'check-up'. Check up is the key word here, as we are not talking about them leaving the country when they are seriously ill.

I the time Atiku had a sprain on his ankle or something and had to leave the country to get it checked. For God's sake, we are talking of an ankle sprain here and not some complicated brain surgery or something. Are they trying to tell us that our doctors - even the very recent graduate doctors do not know how to treat a sprained ankle?

The silent cat is wise cool

True yarns. It is in his (Soludo's) favour to keep quiet and not say anything about what is going on in the finance sector or even in the political sector. If he wants to contest for governorship (as a lot of people are saying he will do) it is best he shuts up otherwise anything he says will be used against him. If he is for Lamido - it will be used against him. If he is against Lamido - it will be used against him. If he is neutral and sits on the fence - it will still be used against him.

Not that this has ever mattered in Naija sha because people dey run mouth and dem still dey win office. But all the same, it is wise for him to KEEP HIS MOUTH SHUT

OMO IBO:

It is worth knowing that the individuals or directors do not owe the banks.
Rather, it is the companies that are in debt.
Anyone who knows anything about about business would understand that this is rife.

CBN would be going after the companies and not the individuals if and when they decide to take things to the next level.

Yes i understand that but at the same time, the 'business' does not mis-appropriate the funds. It is the 'people' or 'directors' that disburse these funds for use in one project or the other hence, if the assets of the business are confisticated and the banks are not able to get all their money back, the people/directors etc will have to be held responsible.
Epiphany(m): 12:34pm On Aug 19, 2009
This also shows that there is no proper 'credit checking' system in the country. People, because of their fame and businesses just walk into two or three banks and borrow millions. . . sorry, billions of Naira.
If there were any proper checks, their names would have been flagged off as 'defaulters' to other banks and they would not have been able to get loans from other banks. Companies like Acquitate Oil and Gas with names of Ike Okolo etc, as well as other people like Imasekha, Dangote and co. You cant be defaulting on your re-payments in one bank and then go into another bank to collect loans
Okay, lets see what CBN will do to these defaulters. Are they going to confisticate properties? Are they going to throw people in jail? Hmmmm, the world is watching o! Let us cheer Sanusi (whether he is doing right or wrong) on to see whether he will finish what he started. He seems to be going the way of Nuhu Ribadu. Lets hope that someone somewhere (like Ibori) will not ensure that he is stopped in his tracks (the way they stopped Ribadu)

Atedo Peterside, chairman Stanbic/IBTC spoke to NEXT on CBN’s meeting with bank heads earlier today in Lagos

'The meeting was handled expertly by Dr, Lamido Sanusi. The mood was sober. His delivery was measured, and it was obvious that he chose each word very carefully. He told us some home truths, but in reality, we’ve known the truth all along. The good news is that the federal goverment is committed to making sure that no banking institution will be allowed to fail.

They will coerce the banks to come clean and recognise their losses immediately. The CBN will inject equity, if necessary. They will go after the individuals, executive management and debtors who erred, but will save the banks and so, depositors need not panic.'
