Nice topic. I was wondering when someone will notice the troubles that SA is facing. This is even more pronounced with the problems that the next (most likely) president of the country (Zuma) is facing. As far as i am concerned, i think that black Africa or Sub Saharan Africa has been a big dissapointment so far. With all the issues that Zuma is facing or faced (rape charges, violence, corruption etc) the voters are still pushing for him to be president. Imagine that! One would have thought that even with the slightest stain on someone, rumours or not, that person will not have a shot at the highest office in any land. The same goes for all other countries in Black Africa that have so far been hopeless at leadership and economic progress. Very true about the Whites in SA. many are moving themselves and families to other countries: Canada, New Zealand, Australia etc. Lets see where our black brothers will get us to as per their leadership strenghts. |

Wow, a chance for the riggers to rig some more. Do we actually know the number of Nigerians outside Nigeria? Do we even know the number of Nigerians in Nigeria? I am looking at a situation where INEC will come back with a number like, "10m Nigerians vote for Atiku" when there are probably only 5 million people eligible to vote |

Look all, the guy is not renouncing Nigeria. I am sure he is just thrilling us with his literary prowess by using a parable/allegory. But even if he renounces Nigeria, what about it? Is he not free to do so? If he feels that Nigeria has not done anything for him and he wants to gum himself to another country, it is his choice. After all, if parents can disown their kids and vice versa, why not do the same to your country? ![]() I think we are being to emotional about this. I guarantee that if the option is offered to 150million Nigerians, at least 75 million will accept that choice. If 75 million people will agree to renounce Nigeria, some of our relatives - educated and otherwise - will be among them. This same thing happened when Anthony Hopkins (the actor - Silence of the Lambs) accepted his american citizenship. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/wales/721642.stm. Even tho he did not renounce his native British citizenship, the Welsh people (his native town) were very very upset and felt that he was not 'patriotic'. Recently or so, Pierce Brosnan (Former James Bond) also accepted to be an American citizen. What will we then say about these guys? Even with their star status, they still crave to be Americans! |

Hey, i dont think the guy is really renouncing his citizenship. He is only thrilling us with his literary prowess. It is the same way too, there is another guy on this thread that is asking whether NIGERIA IS THE CAPITAL OF HELL. What these guys are trying to do is to get us to think think think of the situation we find ourselves in and do something about it. they are writing allegories or parables about our beloved country. But on a more serious note, will many of us not renounce our Nigerian citizenship if offered a foreign one. Lets be very honest here. Okay let me put it another way, if we do not have to renounce it and are allowed dual citizenship, will we not accept it. I WILL ACCEPT DUAL CITIZENSHIP O, I AM BEING TRUTHFUL. |

Why do we need to fill forms (book appointments) to see governors, doctors, dentists, our lecturers (for those in Universities) or even business partners? It is because they also have other things to do, rather than sit idle all day waiting for us to come and visit them. They need to schedule particular times to attend to business issues, health problems, assignments, etc. Also, pple like doctors may need to study your casefile. Pple like the lecturer may need to revise the topic for which you want to come and see him. Relating this to pastors, filling out a form may just be a way of putting some ORDER into his day. If he has particular functions he needs to attend to, ceremonies he needs to preach in, babies he needs to dedicate and even family he needs to attend to, should he not get your name down on a form to schedule a time for you to be able to see him? Fine, there are some 'family' pastors whose offices you can walk into anytime anyday, but imagine you want to see pastors like Adeboye, Oyedepo, Adefarasin, Okonkwo. Do you think you will just walk into their offices like you are entering your brothers bedroom? Another reason to fill forms may be to ascertain what kind of 'counselling' you may need or if you are just one of those gossip folk who want to come and wast the pastors time. If they see that your case is not a serious one, why not attend to issues that need urgent attentions eg. someone has just died and his/her family needs urgent attention, whereas you want to go to the pastor to tell him that he should pray for you because you have a headache. Of course, when you fill your form, you will be kept at the back of the line. Ok, ok, ok, i have written too much now. But seriously, this form thing can get out of hand with some pastors or people. They may take it to mean something else. It may not be necessary at times and some 'small' pastors may make it out to be some form of self fulfillment, maybe trying to make themselves more important than they are. |

Interesting topic. I was amused when i read through peoples comments because i was brought up in Nigeria, i am Ibo and i CANNOT SPEAK A WORD OF THE LANGUAGE. In fact, i was brought up in the yoruba speaking part of Nigeria and i still CANNOT SPEAK A WORD OF YORUBA. While i see reason with a lot of what is being said about speaking your local language, i am now in my late 30's and do not see what speaking Ibo or yoruba would have done for me that i have not been able to achieve so far. Will speaking the language have given me the job i have now, or will speaking the language ensure that i have good health and fortune in my life? Quite frankly, i think this language thing is very overrated because language is meant to be a form of communication. If i can communicate effectively with the person i need to communicate with, what is the problem? If the local dialect WAS THE ONLY FORM OF COMMUNICATION, of course i will be compelled to learn it. While we are also argueing about this, i will like us to know that the problem is not only a nigerian thing. Having travelled far and wide, i can boldly say it that there are parts of the world where people cannot speak the local dialects because of the obvious reason - globalization. The welsh people in the United Kingdom are worried because rather than speak welsh, their children learn to speak french or spanish or other international languages. When asked why, these kids say that they would rather learn to speak an international language than learn the local one. The same goes for the Danish, Norweigian, Dutch and Swedish people, who speak english in their countries. Some of their children do not speak their national languages. I say again, while it is nice that kids/people are able to speak their local dialects, it is not a do or die thing. Employers these days, even in Nigeria, would rather you speak an International language, than a local one. |

I live in the UK and on my way to work every morning (a 20 minute walk) i have cause to see police cars ing and once in a while, two police men or women on patrol going about their duty. Honestly, they look so good and inspiring that i swear, i have wished i was born here so i could have ed their force. These guys are properly trained, courteous, educated, neat, fit and any other positive adjectives you would wish to use to describe them. Their cars are always in tip top condition, the move around in two's and move around with purpose. To crown it all, one of my fav tv programs is their program where they show their high speed chases, police on patrol, how they go about their business, etc PEOPLE, I AM IMPRESSED WITH THEIR SYSTEM OVER HERE O! The first thing we need in Naija is not 2.7 trillion naira, but a renewing of our collective minds, starting with a purposeful leader/leaders - the anointing should start from the head first and flow down. Proper anointing does not start from the chest or waist or knees. A leader that will inspire a collective mental change should be the first thing to happen because even after a bloody revolution or war (i reject that happening in naija) the people will still need a leader to make things right. Abi?? After our minds have been made right and renewed, goals have been set, sub leaders have been chosen, then can we start speaking of 2.7 trillion. This is because without the renewing of minds, if that money is given to Okiro, everyone, including his boys in the junior ranks, willl think that 'Oga don see money to chop'. When this happens whatever changes he wants to make, whether in good faith or not, will not be looked upon favourably by the lower ranks. As for me, i will not give anyone that amount o because it will just end up in their pockets! |

Wow, i just read the article and the guy has made a lot of sense. Things are definately not as they should be. Na so now. I have often thought that the things that Lebanese, Indians, Pakistanis, British, Filipinos etc do in Nigeria are way beyond what we as Nigerians can do in their countries. I dont blame them anyway, i blame the government. If they cannot put some proper policies and laws in place, these people will always find ways to flaunt the weak laws we have. Imagine a Nigerian mis-behaving in Lebanon or India. You would be shot on the spot - without apologies! In a place like UK or Europe, they may just throw you in jail or deport you. |

Indeed, i feel that slowly, Nigerians have things to be proud of. Gone are the days when Southern African companies come into Nigeria to 'show us the way'. Companies like Econet, MTN, DSTv and others. Then, i used to complain and grumble that people and countries that do not know as much as Nigerians are coming into our country to 'boss' us around. NOW, we as Nigerians have companies like Glo, the banks, OandO, Aero etc going into other countries to run things. Even though we may have complaints against some of these companies or their owners, it is a thing of joy to see these firms establish themselves in other places. This said, i would like to say that i am ashamed that now, Virgin Nigeria is pulling out of the London and Jo'burg route - esp the Jo'burg route. They are virtually handing that route over to South African Airlines once again, to monopolize. At least the Lag-London route has so many airlines plying it even tho one may have to go via a transit airport. Can someone pls tell me what the hell is the matter with VirginNigeria? How can you be plying Lag-London and Lag-Jo'burg and be making a loss. DO THEY HAVE PROPER ANALYSTS AND MANAGERS IN THAT COMPANY? |

Even tho i know it will amount to nothing, maybe Nigeria should go the way of China by ENFORCING 2 CHILDREN PER COUPLE (it is one child per couple in China). After the enforcement, there should be a means to 'adopt if you want more'. Secondly, i have noticed that it is those in the lower echelon of society that keep giving birth to children. Most of my guys, who i would say are 'middle' class guys, i.e. bankers, oil guys, engineers, etc all have one or two kids. According to them, it is expensive looking after babies and kids. That said, you also see that it is the drivers, security men, gardeners etc, that have four or five kids and even more! When they have these kids, you find out that the kids are the ones that hawk, sell at mama put ts etc. Something should be done about this population explosion o. We cannot continue giving birth to children that will populate the world for nothing. |

While i do not subscribe to any VIP area in churches, i still feel that to some extent, putting a governor or elected official in the midst of the 'masses' may cause some problems. Knowing our society, people will begin to ask that person for jobs, contracts, handouts, loans etc. In extreme situations, people of opposing parties may even send area boys and/or miscreants to harrass that person and probably inflict some bodily injury - IN EXTREME SITUATIONS O! Over here in more sane climates, Gordon Brown or Tony Blair may seat in the midst of millions and all these millions will do is probably greet him with the nod of the head or a wave or maybe a 'hello'. I think sometimes, we have to understand the security implications that surround our leaders - it may be also that because they have not carried out their duties properly, they are afraid also of what may happen to them should they be caught without their ADCs and security personnel. Also, i would love to comment on the real topic, which concerns the 'Men of God and their friends'. I am not a Redeemed member and in fact, i have often commented negatively on the friendship between Baba and our Leaders. However, of recent, looking at the 'friendship' between baba Adeboye and our men in high places (OBJ, Tinubu, Ibori), Baba may just be playing the maturity card here. If we all the story of David and Saul, we that David never ONCE spoke against Saul because according to him, God was the one that allowed Saul to be in the position he was in and even tho he was doing bad things, David did not speak against him or even kill him when he had the chance. His arguement was that although God had annointed him (David) to be king, when God was ready, HE (God) would remove Saul and make David king. That may be Baba's own style, as well as any other MOG that is courting kings and men in high places. While there are those that have that attitude, there are others - Like Tunde Bakare, who have been specially annointed to Shout and scream at these Leaders when they are not doing what they are supposed to be doing. They have been given the special permission to damn any leader who works and speaks against the people of God and they are supposed to do this without any personal feelings whatsoever. At the end of the day, how many of us would not feel honoured and priviledged to entertain powerful men in our homes and offices? How many of us would turn them away, when they request to partake in programs we are organizing. Even if only out of respect for their offices, will we not allow them to address our staff, friends and even congrigations? Even biblically, it is a thing of honor to appear before kings (whether these kings are bad or not). After we have then appeared with them, how many of us will not go behind their backs to publicly ridicule them? Will we not resort to telling them what we think in private, instead of entertaining them and suddenly turning around to embarrass them? My people, once you begin to fraternize with these leaders, you cannot suddenly turn around and start abusing them o! You have to be wise in the ways you handle the relationship! You would then need the wisdom of God! |

Finally, a lovely topic that evokes my interest. I would love to comment on the fact that UNESCO has taken time out to point this fact out to our leaders and others in influential positions. What then, is their role (UNESCO) in encouraging our government to make sure that policies are enacted that favour the return of these children to schools - or are they just to sit on the side and sound the alarm now and again? That said, i also shudder to think about the standards that even those who ARE in schools are subjected to. Learning under trees, in adverse climatic conditions, with no access to books, toys and training materials, musical instruments and even computers and electronic gadjets. These are the basic things that build up children and their thinking faculties etc. When these are not available, you find out that the future of our children is not as bright as those of the western ones (or those of our thieving leaders), who have all these facilities and more at their disposal. Why would we not continue to see child prodigies in the areas of music, computer programming, sciences and technology from the western children? There needs to be a complete overhaul of the educational sector, as it is not just the primary or secondary schools that have this problem - that said, there needs to be a complete overhaul of the medical, transportation, banking, infrastructure, security, etc. Since all these sectors are inter-related, there is no way you can try to develop one, without the other. I am sorry, but we may have to continue bearing this shame that has come upon us and our nation. |

What is all the complaint about? According to their culture and religion, a man is allowed to marry more than one wife, no matter how old he is and how many wives he has. Besides that, the girl is 21 and is an adult. If she was 15 or 16 or 17, i would understand our right to make noise about it!

Some say failed state, others say we are not a failed state. Whatever we decide to call it, Nigeria has failed and will continue to fail, at least in the near future. Before some begin to fight with me because i am saying that we will continue to fail, let us look at what is happening now, so that we can give an enlightened projection of what will happen in the near future: 1) We have criminals like Ibori, still roaming around as a free man - what lessons are we teaching other people that 'plan' to embezzle money? Does that not mean that in the future, more people will steal money and use this money to sponsor future presidential candidates to make themselves immune? 2) People who have tried to better the society, not matter how little, have been disgraced and are still being witch hunted - Ribadu, El- Rufai, Gani, Okonjo - Iweala, Soludo etc. 3) Those that stole money have been fined very stupid amounts and set free - Igbinedion, Tafa Balogun, etc. I can go on and on with this list and sadden myself. Just to summarize all this, WE HAVE FAILED FAILED FAILED. I dont know any other word that can classify our present state. |

A technocrat and a politician are completely different people. because she is a successful /economist/World bank VP does not mean that she can coordinate the affairs of a 'jungle' like Nigeria successfully. In fact, i predict that if any mistake happens and she gets to that office, she will either be killed, disgraced or frustrated out of office. |

Nice topic, and one i have always thought of. There are many and i mean very many Ibo speaking guys from Delta who can hold their own. There are a lot of them are in control of a lot of money. Elumelu, Edoziens, Ovia, Utomi, Atuche, Odogwu and a lot of others. Even though we all know that sometimes, business men may have their own reasons for doing (or not doing) things, i have always wondered why these people cannot 'fight' for their own people to enter positions of power within the state. That said, we often see and hear of how the Ibrus, Okumagba's, Dafinone's (who are all prominent Urhobos) fight for and back their own kith and kin when it comes to Delta state politics (in fact, they themselves ARE involved in these politics too). Maybe that is why the Urhobos always have a loud voice when it comes to Delta politics. They have managed to relegate the others (Ijaw, Itshekiris and Ibos) into the background, Rumour has it that although Uduaghan is Itshekiri (correct me if i am wrong), it took the clout and influence of Ibori and his people to 'make' him the governor. This indeed shows that if the Urhobos are not behind someone, it may take a lot before that person can succeed in government. What i think is that Jibunoh should bring all these 'big' Ibo men of Delta state together first, to speak in one loud voice. Afterall, politics is a game of numbers OR How much noise a people can make to be heard and then considered |

Nice, but he is not saying anything we dont already know - He sees bloodshed (There is always bloodshed in Nigeria). Political Riot (have we ever been free of these?). Cement, bread, diesel and house prices will go up (duh! when have these ever been reduced?). Kainji Dam wil witness problems (kainji ALWAYS has problems, hence our lack of power supply). Mr President needs prayers on his health (of course he needs prayers. We already know that he has problems and that his sickness is not one that will just GO AWAY). The list goes on and on and on. While i do not doubt his predictions or his good intentions, i feel that it does not take a 'prophet' to predict a lot of what he has already predicted. Anyone that works with data/statistics/research will be able to give similar predictions. We need to hear things like; IBB will be killed, Ibori will be jailed for life, Benin - Sagamu expressway will be completely renovated, the Niger delta crises will be solved, there will be a complete overhaul of the educational sector, the health sector will be made worldclass and people will now be flying into Nigeria for surgeries and medical consultations, etc. When we hear things like these and they eventually come to , WE WILL KNOW THAT WE HAVE REAL PROPHETS AND ORACLES. |

Ehenh, and so? Is it our fault that these days, students are not interested in learning? Is this problem not from HIS generation and those before? By the way, what do these students want to learn, and from who? Is it from lecturers who cannot use computers? Or from teachers who use the same notes they used 10 years ago? That said, it is not only the students who are not interested in learning. THE TEACHERS AND LECTURERS THEMSELVES ARE NOT INTERESTED IN LEARNING. When last and how often do they update their knowledge and how do they do it? The whole system is warped jare. Lets not allow one Prof. to try and convince us that it is the students fault, when the fault lies in multiple places. |

Honestly, i dont know why the woman has accepted this position with open arms. She should learn from history that people that serve or have served the government of Nigeria always have their names 'tarnished' at one point or the other - especially those that try to do good. Ribady is currently suffering for all he did, while in government. El-Rufai is presently facing the same thing. I that Okonjo-Iweala (who honourably resigned her position in government) was at one time, accused of some mis appropriation of funds. The same thing was levelled at Soludo some time ago. These people may not be saints, but they at least tried to do more than the average office holders With all the good work that Akunyili did in NAFDAC, this ministry of information will tarnish her image. How is she going to lie to Nigerians and the world about things that are going on in Nigeria and the government? Is she going to give them the right info or will she lie? How come her husband and family are not telling her to resign? Is this a case of being power drunk? After all the good work in Nafdac, why cant she resign with her head held high? Maybe power really intoxicates! |
