Vice iral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas (retired) is a distinguished Nigerian naval officer who served as the 22nd Chief of Naval Staff from July 2015 until his retirement in January 2021. Early Life and Education: Born on September 27, 1960, in Nko, Cross River State, Nigeria, Ibas began his education at Nko Primary School and later attended Big Qua Primary School in Calabar. He completed his secondary education at Hope Waddell Training Institute, Calabar, between 1972 and 1976. In 1979, he enlisted in the Nigerian Defence Academy as part of the 26th Regular Course and was commissioned as a sub-lieutenant on January 1, 1983. Military Training and Qualifications; Throughout his military career, Ibas undertook various courses both domestically and internationally, enhancing his expertise in naval operations and strategic studies. Notably, he completed the Sub-Lieutenant Technical Course in India, Primary Pilot Training at the Nigerian Air Force Base in Kaduna, and the Junior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, Jaji. He also holds a master's degree in Defence and Strategic Studies from Quaid-i-Azam University in Islamabad, Pakistan. Naval Career: Ibas held several key positions within the Nigerian Navy. He served on various naval ships, including NNS Ruwan Yaro, NNS Obuma, and NNS Aradu. His leadership roles encomed Commanding Officer of the Nigerian Navy Underwater Warfare School and Forward Operating Base Ibaka. He also served as Naval Provost Marshal, Principal Staff Officer to the Chief of Naval Staff, and Flag Officer Commanding Western Naval Command. His tenure as Chief of Naval Staff spanned from July 2015 to January 2021. Awards and Honors: In recognition of his service, Ibas has been awarded several prestigious honors, including the Silver Jubilee Medal, ECOMOG Medal, Forces Service Star, Meritorious Service Star, Distinguished Service Star, and the General Service Star. In October 2022, he was conferred with the Nigerian National Honour of Commander of the Order of the Federal Republic (CFR) by President Muhammadu Buhari. Personal Life: Ibas is married to Theresa Ibas, and they have three children. His personal interests include reading, watching documentaries, and playing golf. Yesterday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu appointed Vice iral Ibas as the of Rivers State following the declaration of a state of emergency in the state. |
