The Lagos State Government has cleared tankers, which were illegally parked or abandoned, on the Apapa–Oshodi Expressway.

The government, in a statement by the spokesperson for the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on Monday, Mrs. Bola Ajao, explained that the decision would ensure the safety of Lagosians and free flow of traffic in the area.

The General Manager, LASTMA, Babatunde Edu, who led the team of operatives of the agency in conjunction with the Nigerian Navy and the police on Sunday, said over 50 trailers were removed from the area in accordance with the government’s zero tolerance for gridlocks and indiscipline.

He added that the exercise was to checkmate the excesses of tanker drivers and restore sanity to the area.

Edu said, “The state government, being a responsible and responsive one, will ensure that every citizen has a right to Apapa, and not only the tankers or trucks carrying containers.”

He said efforts had been made in the past to restore sanity and bring back the glory of Apapa, which had been truncated by the tanker drivers.

He added that the enlightenment and enforcement exercise would be a continuous one as the agency would not relent until tanker drivers complied with the directive of the government.

He said, “Series of meetings have been held with the Petroleum Tanker Drivers branch of the National Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers to educate their and ensure that tanker drivers desist from indiscriminate parking and indiscipline attitude on the road.

“All tanker drivers are advised to adhere strictly to the new directive, as the government will not hesitate to enforce traffic rules and regulations to the latter.”

Edu called on the public to take possession of the road and not hesitate to inform LASTMA of any broken down or abandoned tankers and trucks on the Apapa – Oshodi Expressway, saying the agency had been empowered to respond promptly to distress calls.

As expected the leader of the dreaded Boko Haram sect, Abubakar Shekau, who was named among the 100 Most Influential People in the world by Time Magazine, did not attend the Gala 100 held in New York. The event held at Lincoln Center, New York was put together to celebrate the 100 influential people in the world.
His selection drew criticism from Nigerians who felt that TIME magazine might be promoting the evil of the sect by naming him as one of the Most Influential People in the World for 2015.
shekau-influentialThree other Nigerians, namely, the president-elect, Major Gen. Muhammadu Buahri(retd), award-winning novelist, Chimamanda Adichie and BringBackOurGirls campaigner, Oby Ezekwesili made the list.
“Most Americans do not yet recognize his name, but the citizens of Nigeria, Africa’s most populous country, know Abubakar Shekau all too well: he is the most violent killer their country has ever seen. Shekau took over the terrorist organization Boko Haram in 2009 after the group had been weakened by Nigerian government forces.
Shekau, who is believed to be in his 30s, began to stage increasingly daring kidnapping and killing raids on schools, churches and mosques thought by Boko Haram to be violating their interpretation of Islam. The taking of over 200 schoolgirls in April 2014 brought Boko Haram into the international spotlight,” reads an honorary essay about the terrorist, written by General Carter Ham (U.S. Army, retired).
In June 2012 the United States Department of State designated Shekau as a terrorist and effectively froze his assets in the United States. Since June 2013, the Department has had a standing reward of US$7 million for information leading to Shekau’s capture through its Rewards for Justice program. In addition, the Nigerian army has offered a ₦50 million reward (approximately US$300,000) for Shekau.
Buhari also did not attend the event while Ezekwesili did and called on Barrack Obama to help rescue the missing Chibok girls.

The Independent National Electoral Commission in Kwara State has identified non-removal of (nylon) films on the finger capture region of card readers as one of the causes of the hitches experienced with the device in the March 28 election.

It also attributed the flop to the removal of the card reader’s battery, stating that the process required that the device
must be reconfigured before it could be used.
The commission, in a memo sent to the supervisory and presiding polling officers by the state Resident Electoral Commissioner, Dr. Emmanuel Onucheyo, gave some directives to the officers to forestall a repeat of the challenges.
The memo read, “‎Ensure the card readers are properly charged before handing them to supervisory/presiding officers. Ensure that the batteries are not removed for any reason whatsoever. If in any case, the batteries are removed, the s for reconfiguration. Ensure all the nylon film, covering the finger capture area, is removed before use.
“The SPOs should be re-educated about the card readers and their importance.”
The Public Relations Officer of the commission, Mr. Ayanda Jacob, said the earlier hiccups could be avoided if the officers complied with the directives.
He said, “The essence of ing the memo is to avoid the challenges we faced in the last elections. It is faster for card readers to identify ed voters if the nylon on the finger capture area is removed. Some presiding officers did not do so. Some officers also removed the devices’ batteries and by so doing, they stopped working properly untill they were reconfigured.
“Generators have been provided to fully charge the batteries and each battery lasts for about 12 hours.”
Jacob stated further that both sensitive and non-sensitive election materials had been moved to the 16 local government areas of the state, adding that the commission had made proper arrangements ‎to ensure that the Saturday’s poll was more effective.

The All Progressives Congress has raised the alarm over President Goodluck Jonathan’s unannounced visit to Lagos State a day to the governorship election.

National Publicity Secretary of the APC, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, in a statement, wondered why Jonathan arrived in Lagos late on Thursday.

He said Jonathan had a closed-door meeting with the Peoples Democratic Party governorship candidate, Mr. Jimi Agbaje; the Minister of State for Foreign Affairs II, Musiliu Obanikoro; and the National Coordinator of the Oodua Peoples Congress, Gani Adams.

Mohammed alleged that the meeting was obviously to strategise on how to manipulate the polls.

He said Jonathan was using the general perception, that he is a ‘good sportsman’, to deceive Nigerians.

He said the President was on a “revenge mission” to rig in Lagos because he failed in the state on March 28.

The APC spokesman added that the PDP had brought in fake result sheets, which it would use to record doctored figures on Saturday.

He said the PDP was desperate to win Lagos because having lost the centre, Lagos was the only means through which the party could be funded.

Mohammed said, “Before the meeting, eagle-eyed Nigerians, who are appalled by the PDP’s rigging plans, have widely circulated on the social media the details of the planned electoral malfeasance, including the airlifting from Abuja to Lagos of a Black Kia Mohave SUV, with number plate DHQ 340, which was packed with election materials (especially result sheets).

”The meeting in Lagos was aimed at devising a strategy to distribute the fake result sheets that were packed into the SUV, which will be free to move around (because of its plate number) despite the restriction on vehicular movement during the elections.

”The same President, who conceded defeat in the presidential election and then followed up with a speech in which he said he would like his ‘legacy’ of free and fair elections to endure, is the one who is presiding over a desperate move to steal the people’s votes on Saturday.

”How can President Jonathan’s ‘legacy’ endure when one of his last acts in office is a seeming vengeance mission to lead his party to capture Lagos, because the PDP sees the state as a cash cow that they can milk to death, with the party’s gravy train at the federal level, having derailed?”
