Chip maker MediaTek has announced another one (after the Helio G100 announced a few months ago), the Helio G200.

However, the Helio G200 is not exactly an entirely new chip; like the Helio G100, it is also essentially an enhanced version of the Helio G99. According to reports, the Helio G200 delivers about 10% performance improvement over the Helio G100.

TECNO Spark 40 series is the first smartphone with the new MediaTek Helio G200 chipset.

Breaking: TECNO Phantom V Flip Android 14 update just arrived today. Quite late, but better late than never; right?

The update is 7GB large and updates the phone from Android 13 to 14. It also updates HiOS on the phone to version 14.5.

It has been months of expectations for the 2024 Phantom duo and now that they are finally official, the specs are meh.

Section 35 of the Data Protection Act states clearly that it is a criminal offence for a digital loan app to access the details of their customers to recover its money. EasyBuy has breached this act and has acted criminally.

Secondly, the Cybercrime Prohibit and Prevention Act of 2015 states that any person, who knowingly or intentionally transmits any communication through a computer system or network to bully, threaten or harass another person is liable to imprisonment of 10 years and a fine of N25 million. EasyBuy has consistently breached this act.

In Nigeria, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCC) is the government agency responsible for maintaining sanity when it comes to protecting consumers. The FCC has repeatedly taken action against the abusive activities of loan apps and services in the country.

In February this year, after doing some house cleaning of loan apps, the commission published a statement affirming that it was “intensifying enforcement efforts and adopting a zero-tolerance stance towards any exploitation of consumers or abusive conduct, whether in balance calculations, loan default enforcement, or recovery processes.”

Indeed, it is understandable that financial service providers need to recover their funds after disbursing loans. This is a valid need. However, with the emergence of loan apps in Nigeria came an abusive approach to loan recovery that can best be described as agbero behaviour. It is definitely also unlawful behaviour.

Despite the clear laws and the clampdown by the FCC, EasyBuy continues to act with impunity, giving a middle finger to Nigerians and to the government.

The first thing that caught my attention when I first held the OPPO Reno12 5G in my hand was how lightweight and handy it is. I am a lover of lightweight and handy smartphones, so it is only natural that I notice such things.

Checking the specs sheet, it says this phone weighs just 177g and is only 7.6mm thin. Many phones in this price range weigh much closer to 200g (and above) and are often over 8mm in width.

The Reno12’s slim profile and lightweight are impressive considering that it has a 5000mAh battery. The frame and back being plastic help with that, of course. But it makes it all the more compressive, considering that it is IP65 dust and splash proof. That’s assuring should you need to use it in a drizzle or should it get splashed with water.

The Reno12 has an infrared port (and I am glad, because that is making a big comeback in smartphones). Seeing it up with our home LG TV was a breeze and it works without issues.

In his review, Mister Mobility speaks glowingly of the design of the Phantom V Flip 5G, but also points out how disappointing the cover display is. Except from the review:

Why exactly do we have a foldable phone that you can’t read your SMS, emails, and other messages on the cover screen? Who at TECNO thought that was a good idea?

The cover screen s notifications, but it is almost useless. The notifications are buried under a layer of menu. For example, when you receive an SMS, you have to swipe up on the Cover Display to see it. Who thinks it is a good idea to make a phone dig to find their notifications?

I didn’t get any incoming WhatsApp message notifications in the Cover Display, though notification for incoming WhatsApp calls are ed. Odd combination; right?

And in many scenarios, you have to open up the V Flip in order to complete whatever task you initiate on the Cover Display. Music player: open the device. Calendar: open the device. Perhaps the only app you can use fully on the cover display is the camera.

TECNO needs to fix this and make the outer display more functional. It should be doable via a software update, and it should be done as soon as possible, if the company wants s of the Phantom V Flip 5G to enjoy the kind of functionality that will make them feel like the phone is beyond a fashion statement.
