Please house, am a novice in fish farming. I don't understand the meaning of the abbreviated local feed Formula listed here, can u guys break it down for the newbies? Will the feed be in powdered form?(won't it all dissolve in the water) How will the fishes eat it if it's not pelleted? Where can I easily buy the ingredients? How much does each components cost(so I can know what am up against) , and how do I mix it.... Thanks very much for the selfless help being rendered here in the forum. God bless

First, u don't feed starter for 6wks. I think it's for 3-4 weeks. As for vaccination, u may escape mortalities if u take shortcuts, but it is a dangerous risk not worth taking. It can cost u 90% mortality when it strikes. Rather than adding corn, pkc etc, buy finisher and feed vendors are not the best people to get advice from. They are mostly concern with selling their product and can rip u up. Some of them may not even hav any experience with chickens.

Putting antibiotics in their water daily will help prevent a lot of diseases, but there is a danger of antibiotic resistance developing with time.

Also, while changing feed, do so gradually by mixing new and old feeds 2gether.

oga Farm tech thanks for guidelines. I was told to give them starter till 6 weeks, this is my first time of raising birds, so am still learning. As for the vaccines, never will I make such mistakes(I've learnt my lessons) .. The antibiotics will be curtailed as u advised

Its nice to hear that u finally started ur farm. We that catfish are very rugged and that they can withstand harsh weather conditions,poor water management and diseases;but they are not totally immune to all d above mentioned conditions. So,it's normal to lose few of ur fish before harvest.
Although,u didn't say d size of ur ond and how many juveniles u stocked but I'm just gonna assume u didn't over crowd ur pond. Having said that,I'm gonna try to answer ur questions as much as I can.
1)During raining season,there's usually a reduction of d PH level in ponds and direct(not from reservoirs) bore hole water;and that may be d reason why u lost few of ur fishes thus far but u can't also rule out d amount of dissolved oxygen and diseases all together. I also do not recommend fish medicine in fancy packages cos I really can't say for sure how potent these medicines are. Personally,I Tetracycline (Red and Yellow) capsules and it works perfect for me cos I think tetra is a broad spectrum drug for d prevention & treatment of most catfish diseases(although it doesn't work for all cases) and in the long run it's cheaper. I mix 20-50 capsules to their daily meal depending on what I want.
(2)Yes,it is safe to start feeding local feed at about the time they start consuming 4.5mm feed but if u mill d feed urself and u'r sure of d nutritional content,u can even introduce d local feed 1 month after socking fingerlings,but be sure to mix or mill d feed urself cos u can't be too sure of generic local feed from random feed mills.
Also,be aware that d nutritional content of local feed that can be fed to small fish is quite different from that of slightly bigger ones. Protein content of feed for post fingerlings should be 45-50% and that of juveniles of 3months and above should be 30-45%

P.S: No matter how small ur farm is, always have a small pelleting machine to mill ur own feed,cos u can't break-even by using only foreign feed.

Hi farmers with swag and good heart, I really appreciate our efforts in helping each other grow. I ve been feeding my broilers starter (amo feed ), they will be 6 weeks on Tuesday next week, I didn't ister gumboro on the 10th day, lasota once, but no motarlity or stunted growth. Most of it are weighing upto 2kg already(they can barely walk) . As I was complaining to my feed vendor about how they consume feed and the expenses incured, she advised me to add corn, pkc, to the starter feed in other to save cost .. I started giving them the mixture dis morning, but got scared when I went to check on them 2 hours later, I noticed some of it were making weird noises, as if something is choking them. Am scared o! Did I make a mistake by adding pkc to its feed Should I ve waited till its seven weeks? Cuz I wanna sell it off at 8weeks... Please help a sister cuz these birds has been growing just fine no sickness (Even though I add drugs to their water on daily basis). Am so confused, cuz I heard pple add pkc to their feed, abi my own go different?

ok.. To start with, I don't really sell to people who buy for consumption. Most people who buy are visitors who come to my house and see them running around in the compound, fall in love with them (you know, rabbits are cuties) and want to raise them too. So they buy. But because of how demanding the task of caring for them is, most of my buyers end of eating them.

The town where they are ( in Cross River) has a higher institution, so there are periods when students need them for practicals.. So if you have a higher institution in your area, that's a good place to start to sell. Or you can print fliers or start with word of mouth advert. Or post plain adverts like "FOR YOUR LIVE RABBITS (MALE/FEMALE) CALL ..080yournumber.

Where do you stay? How many do you have?

I started keeping them because of the love foe them not really to sell. But school, travels and my unstable presence meant they at several points lack proper attention. O once left for school leaving about 50 behind, coming back to meet about 12 or so.. Right now there are 21..

Though its kinda difficult to feed them, especially during the dry season, but rabbits eat a whole lot of things including potatoes, potato leafs, ripe plantain and banana peels, palm fronds, yam, yam peels, poultry feed, fruits, water melons (I get the back from some fruit vendors), several grasses that i don't know their botanical names.. A whole lot bro, its just time consuming.

My friends sell for between 3k to 4k for 1.. I sell for 2k to 2k5 for 1.. Matured ones.. 1k5 for litters..

oh wow! You really took ur time to explain. Thanks very much,! I appreciate... I ve 7 rabbits now. Just bought them Sha, my seller claims that 2 of the females are pregnant. And I can't see any sign of pregnancy o.. I don try to really find out if they get Belle true true cuz they are loosing weight instead of adding weight as pregnant rabbits.. That's what really got me confused and worried. I reside in Anambra state.

I have been thinking of similar thing but cant come up with any idea, and information regarding such on the net has been scanty, please guru in the house over to you. We will all take this fish farming to the next level with the researching, experimenting and contributions of expert and we followers.

If this idea is ideal what sort of green leaves that will enhance growth so as not to endanger the fish with toxic leaves?

am new to fishery, but my uncle that's into it for years , gives his fishes fruits like Pawpaw, mangoes, tomatoes, waterleaf, green (spinach) , cucumber, garden egg, etc..(don't give them ugu o "pumpkin"! It's toxic ) .. And one funny part is that he doesn't give them artificial feed. Basically vegetables and dead meat! Yet his fishes grows up to 40kg... Cuz he leaves it in the water for like 2years. And another funny thing is that he hardly changes his water, most times he leaves it for like 6 months, yet his fishes doesn't die! He doesn't even sort his fishes or anything!

Please how can I get my outstanding stipend of September? My employer filled the Outstanding form for September, October, November and December but September was omitted.. They paid from October.
