Early Exposure and the Spark That Lit the Way
Captain Kete’s love for the sea didn’t come from storybooks—it began at the helm of a real vessel. Her father, a retired tug master with the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA), introduced her to the basics of navigation aboard his wooden cargo boat, MV Omugo Queen. There, she first encountered a ship’s steering wheel. That moment didn’t just spark curiosity—it sparked destiny.
During a holiday voyage with her father, she witnessed a sailboat carrying several young trainees navigating the river. The scene planted a lasting vision. Encouraged by her father, she pursued that interest by visiting the Borokiri Almarine Yard in Port Harcourt. But what truly sealed her commitment was a formative encounter with Captain Beatrice Vormawah, Africa’s first female ship captain, aboard the MV SASA RIVER. That meeting, arranged by her training officer Captain John Wright, gave her the living proof that the path she dreamed of walking was possible.
Laying the Foundation: Training, Trials, and Tenacity
In 1986, Kete enrolled in the Sail Training Association (STA) of Nigeria as a seamanship trainee. She advanced her knowledge at the Sports Institute in Isaka—formerly known as Sea School—where she studied navigation, seamanship, and marine communications.

Her first real onboard experience came in 1992 on the MV Schilturm under Ocean Inscape Nigeria Limited. Prior to that, she had participated in a Shell Nigeria-sponsored external examination in nautical science, where she stood out as the only female candidate.
The following years were marked by intense professional development. She secured her cadetship, navigated the often bureaucratic maritime licensing system, and worked aboard multiple vessels. Her persistence paid off when, in 2000, she was sponsored by Tidex Nigeria Limited (formerly Tidewater International) to attend specialized maritime training in Ghana. There, she obtained GMDSS and STCW certifications and enrolled for her Class 3 Deck Officer’s Certificate of Competency (COC).

Rising Through the Ranks

Returning to Nigeria, she remained committed to furthering her career. She obtained her Class 2/1 certification between 2005 and 2006 while continuing active duty on vessels. In 2012, she achieved the pinnacle of her professional journey—earning the Master Mariner license, the highest seafaring qualification globally, permitting her to captain any ship on international waters.
That achievement was not just personal—it was historical.
Recognition soon followed. In 2009, she was honored by Mrs. Alanyingi Sylva, wife of then-Governor Timipre Sylva of Bayelsa State, for becoming the country’s first female marine captain. She also received the prestigious Commodore’s Cup of Nation award from STA Nigeria, presented by Commodore Fengason and HRH King Alfred Diete-Spiff, Nigeria’s first military governor of Rivers State.

Today, as Port Captain at Awaritse Nigeria Limited, Captain Kete plays a key role in port operations, vessel coordination, and maritime safety. Her technical expertise and leadership qualities continue to be vital assets to Nigeria’s growing offshore and shipping industries.
