A United States District Court has sentenced a 37-year-old Nigerian, Henry Ezeonyido, to 27 months imprisonment for his role in a $1m insurance fraud.

PUNCH Metro learnt in a statement by the US Department of Justice on Thursday that Ezeonyido perpetrated the fraud between October 2019 and February 2022.

The statement noted that during the period mentioned above, Ezeonyido submitted fraudulent health insurance claims to five insurance companies, claiming that he was involved in a series of accidents while travelling abroad.

The convict was also said to have filed similar fraudulent claims for seven other people, leading to a total of over $1m in claims.

The statement read, “Ezeonyido was arrested and charged in July 2024 along with co-conspirators Brendon Ashe, Aqiyla Atherton, Darline Cobbler and Ariel Lambert. Ezeonyido was later indicted by a federal grand jury in September 2024. All four of Ezeonyido’s co-defendants pleaded guilty to their roles in the scheme and were subsequently sentenced to probation.

“From approximately October 2019 to February 2022, Ezeonyido submitted fraudulent health insurance claims – on his behalf and on behalf of at least seven other individuals, including Ashe, Atherton, Cobbler and Lambert – to five different health insurance companies for expensive medical treatment that they purportedly received and paid for out-of-pocket while travelling overseas.

“Many of the claims included fake traumatic injuries such as stabbings, gunshot wounds, and hit-and-run car accidents that the defendants and others purportedly suffered, requiring their hospitalisation abroad. In nearly all instances, the individuals were actually in the United States at the time of the purported international medical events.”

Ezeonyido reportedly fabricated medical records to show the medical care received, fabricated bank records to show payment to the international treatment facilities, and, where the claim related to a fake traumatic injury, fabricated police reports describing the circumstances of the alleged event.

Following the claims, the insurance companies paid approximately $655,313 in claims to the affected individuals, some of whom were said to have paid kickbacks to Ezeonyido for helping them facilitate the claims.

It continued, “As a result of these fraudulent claims, the victim’s health insurance companies were billed over $1m for services that were never provided, resulting in payments totalling approximately $655,313.

“Upon receiving these payments from their health insurance companies, Ashe, Cobbler, Lambert, and others paid a portion of the proceeds to Ezeonyido and other co-conspirators, including Atherton, who acted as an intermediary, bringing others into the scheme in exchange for a cut of their paid claims. In total, Ezeonyido retained approximately $396,998 in fraud proceeds.”

Following his arraignment before US District Judge Leo Sorokin, the defendant pleaded guilty to the offence and was sentenced to 27 months imprisonment.

“In February 2025, Ezeonyido pleaded guilty to one count of conspiracy to commit health care fraud and six counts of health care fraud.

“Ezeonyido, 37, was sentenced by U.S. District Court Judge Leo T. Sorokin to 27 months in prison, to be followed by three years of supervised release.

“Ezeonyido was also ordered to pay $655,313 in restitution and to forfeit $396,998 in criminal proceeds,” the statement concluded.

I have my doubts about this issue.
Zamfara is one of the 12 Northern States where apostasising from Islam is treated as a criminal offence under their Penal Code.
I suspect that the fear of a backlash caused the Zamfara State government to panic and stage a huge cover up.

I blame the saharareporters journalist for not scanning copies of court documents relating to the case and ing them on social media. That would have made it harder for them to lie about the case as they are doing now.

Ahead of the 2027 polls, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has approved the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Division under its ICT Department to continue to harness the positive aspects of AI and mitigate its negative impact on elections.

This initiative, INEC said, has placed it in the forefront of institutionalising AI capabilities within its ICT infrastructure.

A statement issued by INEC National Commissioner and Chairman of its Information and Voter Education Committee, Sam Olumekun, said the approval was given at its weekly meeting in Abuja where the increasing relevance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to elections and electoral activities in Nigeria and across the world was considered.

According to him, the creation of AI Department is also an important step in the ongoing reform of the electoral process of the commission in areas that only require its istrative action.

The statement, titled “Creation of a Division on Artificial Intelligence by the Commission”, reads: “The Commission held its regular weekly meeting today, Thursday May 22 2025. Among other issues, the meeting considered the increasing relevance of Artificial Intelligence (AI) to elections and electoral activities in Nigeria and across the world.

Recently, the commission attended several conferences with colleagues around the continent on the impact of AI on elections. These interactions were not only motivated by the concern over the use of AI to spread fake news or manipulate content online but also to utilise its benefits for data-driven decision-making, risk detection and mitigation, deepening voter services automation and geo-spatial intelligence in of logistic optimisation for better material distribution and polling unit allocation.

“Consequently, the commission approved the creation of an Artificial Intelligence Division under the ICT Department to continue to harness the positive aspects of AI and mitigate its negative impact on elections.

“The Division will enable the commission to better coordinate and maximise existing technology investments through centralised AI governance. It will also enhance decision-making through data-driven insights, risk management and voter engagement.

“Furthermore, it will strengthen electoral credibility through predictive analytics, automation and intelligent safeguards. This initiative puts the commission in the forefront of institutionalising AI capabilities within our ICT infrastructure. It is also an important step in our ongoing reform of the electoral process in areas that only require istrative action by the commission.”

Abdulrahman Bello, an Islamic cleric and the prime suspect in the gruesome murder of Hafsoh Yetunde Lawal, a final-year student, shocked the courtroom on Wednesday as he openly confessed to killing the young woman to harvest her for a money ritual.

Bello, who is standing trial alongside others accomplices, made the confession in a video recording tendered as evidence at the Kwara State High Court, Ilorin.

However, in the video, he itted to committing the act alone and stated that he would not have killed Hafsoh if he had access to human body parts through other means.

The chilling testimony formed part of the ongoing trial presided over by Justice Hannah Olushola Ajayi.

The court also heard from Inspector Ayodele Azeez of the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID), who detailed the police investigation and recovery of disturbing exhibits from Bello’s residence.

“On February 14, 2025, a case of murder and rape was transferred from Oja-Oba Police Division to the State CID,” Azeez testified.

"The first defendant, Abdulrahman Bello of Olunlade, was found in possession of an axe, cutlass, charms, a table, consultation book, blood-filled container, a pair of slippers, and the severed hands of the victim.”

According to the officer, Bello voluntarily gave his statement in the presence of a lawyer, Barrister A.O. Ahmed, who was provided by the police after Bello said he couldn’t afford one.

The statement was both handwritten and recorded on video, later transferred to a compact disk and submitted as evidence.

The defence counsel, Barrister Agbede, objected to the issibility of the disk, claiming Bello was coerced, but Justice Ajayi ruled the evidence issible and ordered the video to be played in court.

Inspector Azeez also testified that the police tracked and arrested Bello’s known associates using his call records, which revealed regular with the other defendants before and on the day of the murder.

“All five suspects are connected,” Azeez stated.
“The second defendant is Bello’s teacher, the third is the teacher’s student, while the third and fifth defendants are close friends of the first defendant.”

The court was adjourned for recess at exactly 11:32am, with proceedings expected to continue later in the day.

Tanzanians were blocked from social media platform X on Wednesday after a police was hacked and used to falsely announce the president’s death, internet watchdog NetBlocks said.

The social media shutdown comes amid the disappearance of activists Boniface Mwangi of Kenya and Agather Atuhaire of Uganda following their arrest by Tanzanian police earlier this week.

They were in the country to attend the trial of opposition leader Tundu Lissu who is accused of treason ahead of elections in October.

On Wednesday, Tanzanians were unable to access X unless using a Virtual Private Network (VPN), an AFP correspondent said.

“Live metrics show X (formerly Twitter) has become unreachable on major internet providers in #Tanzania; the incident comes as a compromised police posts claims the President has died, angering the country’s leadership,” NetBlocks said in a statement late Tuesday.

Tanzania’s Minister of Information, Communications and Technology Jerry William Silaa confirmed the hack in parliament, adding that the YouTube of the country’s tax authority was also infiltrated.

“The reason these s were compromised is that their security protocols were not sufficiently robust. These s have since been restored,” Silaa said.

Police said they were hunting “the criminals who created and distributed the information” and warned the public against sharing the false messages.

Danny Drinkwater had a football career most can only dream of

In 2016, the Englishman was a key part of the impossible as Leicester won the Premier League.

He had earlier won the Premiership with Manchester United in the 2008/2009 season.

In 2017, Drinkwater made a big-money move to league champions Chelsea but struggled to replicate his title-winning form

After somewhat failed loan spells at Aston Villa and Burnley, among others, in 2022, Danny's Chelsea contract ended and in 2023, he announced his retirement

Rather than stay in football, the former Man United youth academy graduate decided on a career move into construction

Raul Asencio's Official Response

OFFICIAL STATEMENT BY RAÚL ASENCIO

Following the clarification issued today by the head of the Investigating Court nº 3 of San Bartolomé de Tirajana – in which the indictment is rectified initially dictated, expressly excluding me from both the recording of videos of sexual content as of the facts that were the subject of such recording – and before the public dissemination of information related to said procedure, I wish to state the following:

1. I have not participated in any behavior that threatens sexual freedom of any woman, and much less of minors. This is confirmed by the decision issued by the aforementioned Court, which does not attribute to me having maintained sexual relations with the two women involved, nor having recorded them, with or without your consent. Likewise, the court order clarifies that I was not the one who sent third parties no image or video of intimate content, which, I reiterate, were recorded in a different place from the one I was in.

2. The judicial order, as far as I am concerned, limits its content to the eventual momentary viewing of some images by a third party, without attributing to me any participation in its recording or in its dissemination.

3. The accusation made against me, as expressly stated by the court’s decision is strictly provisional. Therefore, it should follow the presumption of innocence prevails. In the event that they are finally formulated charges and an oral trial is opened, I will continue to exercise my defense before the Courts and Courts, in which I maintain full confidence, reaffirming my alienation from any criminal conduct. All this, without prejudice to the utmost respect that I deserves the development of the judicial procedure as a whole, also in what refer to the other people investigated.

4. I want to reiterate, once again, my absolute respect for the rights to freedom and the privacy of all women.

Real Madrid’s Raúl Asencio could face trial over alleged sharing of explicit video.

The Real Madrid defender Raúl Asencio and three former youth players at the club could face trial in connection with the alleged filming and distribution of a sexual video that has left two women, one of them a minor, with symptoms of post-traumatic stress.

In a statement released on Wednesday, a judge on Gran Canaria said he had concluded his preliminary investigation into the recording and distribution of the incident, which is alleged to have taken place in a private area of a beach club on the island on 15 June 2023.

The judge added that a summary criminal case had been prepared and the file given to prosecutors “regarding the four footballers allegedly implicated in the filming and distribution of videos of a sexual nature involving a female minor and another young woman”.

He noted that the alleged victims – who were 16 and 18 at the time – “are currently suffering post-traumatic symptoms as a result of the experience they have been through”.

The judge said the alleged offences included “sharing secrets without consent and violating privacy, distributing and sending videos to third parties without the consent of the women involved, the use of minors for pornographic purposes, and possession of child pornography”.

The court statement did not identify the men allegedly involved – nor explain which player is accused of which offence – but they have been identified in Spanish media as Asencio and his former colleagues Andrés García, Ferrán Ruiz and Juan Rodríguez.

In September 2023, three unnamed Real Madrid reserve players were arrested in connection with the incident and were released after the data on their mobile phones was seized.

According to Spanish media reports the main suspect, whose identity is unknown, recorded a consensual sexual encounter with the young girl, which he then sent to the other players without her consent.

Police said the case had followed a complaint filed by the mother of a 16-year-old girl in the Canary Islands regarding an alleged recording of sexual relations.

They added that while the girl maintained the relations were consensual, the recording had been made without her consent and that she had recently become aware of it.

Real Madrid issued a statement at the time saying that a total of four youth team players had been questioned by police “in connection with a complaint about an alleged release of a private video via WhatsApp” messaging system.

As obtained from careeraddict.com

In many parts of the globe, there’s a considerable shortage of doctors and nurses, weighing on the already stretched healthcare systems, be it in North America or Europe. It turns out people are training to pursue a career as a pilot, working in the lucrative coding field or (gasp!) becoming lawyers. This has raised alarm bells among public policymakers attempting to avert a medical care crisis.

One prescription for this escalating problem is raising the typical doctor's salary, potentially incentivising doctors to remain working in their profession or encouraging young people to become physicians.

Whether it’s in the Netherlands or in many advanced parts of the world, it’s incredible to see how much doctors — both specialists and non-specialists alike — can earn on a monthly basis.

So, where are these top salaries for doctors? We have compiled a list of the top 10 countries with the highest salaries for doctors, courtesy of data compiled by Lenstore.

10. Denmark
Average annual salary: £89,330 ($119,130)

Denmark, like the other Scandinavian nations, has an excellent healthcare system, both in of primary and specialty care, with a huge emphasis on prevention and healthy living, and has a significant demand for primary care doctors. But over the years, the nation has been experiencing a shortage in primary care primarily because of doctors retiring.

Denmark requires all practising physicians to be licensed, and jobs are first given to Danes and doctors from the European Union. That said, one requirement for the job is the ability to speak Danish, thus limiting the number of foreign applicants. If you meet the licensing criteria, the country offers an excellent quality of life, coupled with good retirement benefits.

9. Italy
Average annual salary: £94,052 ($125,416)

Italy, with its population of 60 million, has had difficulties in its healthcare system for many decades. The country is very diverse geographically, with people spread all over, and delivery of healthcare is not equal. Excellent healthcare is available for those living in inner cities and large towns, but those living in rural areas only have access to primary care physicians.

The healthcare infrastructure is not as developed as other European nations, and it also suffers from a shortage of physicians at all levels of healthcare. Patients continually face long delays in seeing specialists. Unlike other nations, Italy has been reluctant to allow foreign doctors to practise in the country; even those from the EU need to speak Italian as a requirement for medical practice.

Junior doctors have to work in the public health system before they can enter private practice.

8. Japan
Average annual salary: £104,878 ($139,836)

Japan has traditionally been a closed nation to many professions, including medicine. However, it has a well-established healthcare system that rivals the best in the world. Even rural areas offer state-of-the-art diagnostics and treatments that are available in major cities. Japan has a rapidly aging population, and many of its doctors are on the verge of retirement.

So far, Japan has not recruited foreign doctors because one requirement for practising medicine is the ability to speak Japanese. In addition, Japan has no shortage of specialists but lacks primary care physicians.

Unlike most other nations, Japanese doctors work very long hours, and their lifestyle is poor. Burnout in the system is common. Even though the government has introduced reforms to promote healthy working hours, this has led to an increase in overtime to meet patient demands. Women physicians particularly do not fare well in the Japanese system because they have to work long hours and, consequently, have no time to balance a family.

7.
Average annual salary: £105,910 ($141,212)

has an excellent healthcare system that meets the demands of its 68 million citizens. The country is huge, but the quality of healthcare is excellent, which results to doctors being the highest paid job in . The nation also offers an excellent lifestyle for doctors, significant professional autonomy in the practice of medicine, and many job opportunities. Whether one works as a physician in private practice or a hospital, the working conditions are good.

However, has a shortage of primary care doctors. Besides accepting doctors from other European nations, it also accepts doctors from many French-speaking nations from Africa. Most hospitals also provide extra language courses for doctors from outside . North Americans are usually not permitted to work in , except for fellowships.

6. Iceland
Average annual salary: £116,532 ($155,375)

Iceland is a tiny nation with only 340,000 people. It has a decent healthcare system and doesn’t have any shortage of doctors to cater to existing demands. In order to work as a doctor in Iceland, candidates must be able to speak Icelandic but, fortunately, most of the population is bilingual or trilingual.

Though salaries for doctors are generous in Iceland, it is one of the most expensive countries in the world.

5. Norway
Average annual salary: £123,042 ($164,057)

Norway, like Denmark, has a solid healthcare system. But doctor burnout is not uncommon in Norway, mainly because of the long working hours. Patients generally have no complaints about the healthcare system, because it is as good as the top centres in Europe. Norway needs primary care workers in rural areas, but job opportunities are limited to those who speak Norwegian or are from the EU.

4. The Netherlands
Average annual salary: £123,116 ($164,155)

The Netherlands has an excellent healthcare system that rivals some of the top countries in the world. The country has solid labour laws that protect healthcare workers from long hours and prolonged overtime. The system also provides healthcare workers with many benefits, including paid parental leave, paid sick leave, at least 40 days of vacation a year, and mental health to prevent burnout. Doctors can work in private or public healthcare.

3. Finland
Average annual salary: £144,704 ($192,939)

Finland is a small nation, and its healthcare system is financed by tax revenues. While the healthcare system is excellent in the cities, it diminishes for citizens in rural areas. There’s a great emphasis on preventive medicine. Doctors who speak Finnish are preferred, and foreign-trained doctors outside the EU have difficulty entering the system.

2. Belgium
Average annual salary: £151,599 ($202,131)

Belgium, like most European nations, has an excellent healthcare system. Belgium is a small country, and the deficiencies are limited to primary care. Citizens of Belgium and the EU are given preferences in the medical profession.

1. United States
Average annual salary: £153,476 ($204,634)

The US is one of the most attractive countries to practise medicine. Not only does it accept foreign-trained doctors from any part of the world, but it also offers high salaries for all physicians and grants them citizenship.

The US has no shortage of specialists, and there are also ample opportunities in rural areas for people who want to practise primary care, pathology or psychiatry. While the US has advanced healthcare, it’s not evenly distributed among the population. Doctors are at liberty to work for the government or in private practice.

Justice Amina Adamu Aliyu of the Kano High Court has assumed jurisdiction to hear the alleged misappropriation of public funds filed against the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje.

In an amended 11-count charges instituted by the Kano Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission, against the former Kano State Governor, Wife, Dr. Hafsat Umar; Son, Umar Abdullahi Ganduje, and five others, the defendants are accused of bribery, misappropriation, and diversion of public funds running into billions of naira.

Ganduje, along with seven other defendants, moved an application for a preliminary objection to challenge the jurisdiction of the court to hear the matter.

Other defendants are Abubakar Bawuro, Umar Abdullahi Umar, Jibrilla Muhammad, Lamash Properties Limited, Safari Textiles Limited, and Lasage General Enterprises Limited.

When the matter came for ruling on pending motions on Tuesday, Justice Aliyu dismissed Ganduje’s preliminary objection, describing it as incompetent to stall the hearing.

Citing relevant provisions on point of law, Justice Aliyu held that charges filed by the prosecution on May 13, 2024, against the defendants are competent for trial.

The court subsequently posited that powers to investigate criminal matters do not rest solely in the hands of the police, and affirmed the right of the state Anti-Corruption agency to equally carry out investigations on criminal issues.

The presiding Judge also dismissed similar applications filed by the seven defendants that challenged her jurisdiction to sit on the matter.

Subsequently, the court summoned the defendants to appear on the next adjourned date for a hearing; however, it added that the trial would proceed even in the absence of Ganduje and seven others. The case was adjourned to July 30 and July 31, 2025, for hearing.

Earlier, the prosecution counsel, Adeola Adedipe, SAN, hinted at the notice of reply to the preliminary objections to all the respondents and urged the court to dismiss the respondents’ applications for lack of merit.

In a counter argument, Barr. Lydia Oluwakemi Oyewo, counsel to Ganduje, wife, and son, Lydia Oluwakemi Oyewo, objected to the position of the prosecution. She urged the court to quash all charges against the defendants.

In the amended criminal charges, the Complainant said “Kano state Government on your (Ganduje) instruction and approval asked one of the receivers of USSD 120,000 from a beneficiary of a contract awarded by Kano state government, contrary to and punishable under section 22 of the Kano State Public Complaint and Anti-Corruption Commission law 2008, (as amended) law no. 2 of 2009.

“That on February 10, 2017, Abdullahi Ganduje dishonestly and/or corruptly to your advantage collected a kick-back of the sum of USSD 213,000 being money generated from people and entities seeking or holding the execution of Kano state government contract or project for the remoulding of Kantin-Kwari textile market as a bribe through one of the contractors.”

Nottingham Forest forward Taiwo Awoniyi has been taken to hospital to undergo urgent abdominal surgery, it has been reported.

Awoniyi picked up an injury during Forest's 2-2 draw at home to Leicester which was marred by Forest owner Evangelos Marinakis' furious on-pitch meltdown at manager Nuno Espirito Santo just after full time.

Awoniyi nastily collided with a goal post as he battled Leicester's Facundo Buonanotte for the ball

It left him in a heap and the injury is much worse than first thought

The Nigeria international received treatment during the closing stages of the match but made his way back onto the pitch as Forest searched for a winner.

Awoniyi, who came on in the 84th minute, completed the game despite looking in huge discomfort and Sky Sports reports that his injury is much worse than initially thought.

The report adds that Awoiniyi was taken to hospital on Monday evening for urgent abdominal surgery after complications were discovered by club medical staff.

Marinakis revealed after the game that the decision not to substitute Awoniyi was the reason for his outrage.

"Today is a day for celebration because after 30 years Nottingham Forest is guaranteed to be competing on the European stage once again, a promise I made to our ers when we achieved promotion!" Marinakis said in a statement.

"With two more games to go in the Premier League, we must keep believing and keep dreaming, right to the final kick of the game.

"We are extremely proud of and close to Nuno and the team, and we must celebrate the historic achievements of this season.

"Everybody - coaching staff, players, ers and including myself - we were frustrated around the injury of Taiwo and the medical staff's misjudgement on Taiwo's ability to continue the game.

"This is natural, this is a demonstration of the ion we feel for our club."

Forest's draw to their already relegated rivals secured European football at the City Ground for the first time in 29 years.

Marinakis berated Nuno at full time on the pitch in front of the cameras

Awoniyi was sent back on by the club's medical staff, completing the game having come on on 83 minutes

However, it's viewed as a disappointing result because it leaves them in seventh spot and thus with an outside chance of qualifying for next season's Champions League.

The two-time European champions, who only earned promotion back to the Premier League in 2022, spent much of the season in the Champions League box seat.

However, a run of just one win in six league outings has seen Forest slip out of the Champions League spots.

With two league matches remaining, Forest are a point behind Chelsea, who occupy the final Champions League spot as they lie fifth in the Premier League table.

Marinakis' outburst sparked huge outrage, with new footage also showing him kick a bucket in anger after he berated Nuno.

The Greek businessman's actions left Manchester United legend Gary Neville raging as he urged Nuno to resign from his post as manager.

Neville said: "Scandalous from that Forest owner. Nuno should go and negotiate his exit tonight with him! The Forest fans, players and manager do not deserve that."

Although Nuno laughed off any suggestion that he'd heed Neville's advice, as he responded: "It is because of the owner and his ion that we are growing as a club.

"He pushes us. He wants us to be better.

"It is his ion and desire to be a big club - 30,000 people felt the same today. For sure, many of them would go on the pitch and shake us down.

"Us as a club, we owe a lot to the Marinakis family.

"I am not going to comment too much. I have huge respect for Gary Neville, he is the coach who replaced me when I was sacked at Valencia. So he was a coach himself.

New footage show what Nottingham Forest owner did immediately after Nuno row

"He knows what it is like to be on the touchline. All the rest, please allow me…I do not want to proceed about (talk of) the future."

Asked whether he was comfortable being spoken to in such a way in a public arena, Nuno added: "I have been in football so many years as a player and as a coach.

"It is the ion and desire. The players feel it, we feel it and the fans feel it. We have to do better."

Forest's next outing sees them travel to West Ham on Sunday before they face Chelsea at the City Ground on the final day.
