No more grazing in Benue as from Wednesday, Ortom declares

Benue State Governor, Samuel Ortom.
John Charles, Makurdi

Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State has declared that open grazing is now forbidden in the state following the age of the law in May 2017.

In a broadcast made to the people of the state early Wednesday, the governor said, “Let me appeal to all citizens to be law abiding; no one should take law into his hands. We have put adequate machinery to enforce the law.”

Our correspondent who went round Makurdi reported that some parts of the capital city were calm; but a visit to international cattle market at north bank area of the capital city showed tense atmosphere.

Cattle within the market were restricted to the ranch, while some cows which showed signs of fatigue were down.

Speaking to our correspondent, the secretary, Cattle Dealers Association, Garuba Mohammad, described the situation as “hard time,” expressing fear that the new law would run them out of business.

He noted that their cattle, before Wednesday, used to graze within two kilometers to the abattoir; adding that they had been forced to restrict movement of their cows due to the presence of vigilante groups scattered around their routes.

“If you look round, you will see that some of the cows are lying down. It is because of lack of food and water. Vigilante groups have been stationed on all our routes, even to the stream down the fence. We cannot go there because we have been warned not to go beyond the fence of the abattoir.”

Mohammad said the 72 of the association at north bank have over 3,000 cows and expressed fear that most of the cows might die in the next few days.

He called on the state government to provide the needed facilities within the abattoir, such as water and grass; adding that if the state government fails to assist, they might be forced to move out of the state.

Chairman, t Task Force on the enforcement of the anti open grazing law, Col. Edward Jando (rtd.), said the vigilante group was only performing its duty.

I have read the article again.

But for the Nairaland antispambot I would have posted it myself.

It was clearly written to the Senate that a fair hearing wasn't given to Lawal and not that the presidency suggests innocence.

Again I repeat stop quoting misleading headlines.

You obviously are referring to this clause "He said Mr. Lawal said neither the SGF nor the company said to have been used to perpetrate the alleged illegality was invited by the the Shehu Sani-committee." while you intentionally missed out on this "But in a quick reaction, Mr. Sani raised a point of order to defend his commitee’s report.
He said Mr. Buhari’s claims were false, insisting that Mr. Lawal and other parties were involved and his committee had evidence.

Stop posting misleading headlines.

The presidency simply said Lawal wouldn't be sacked until he got a fair hearing.

In other words, they would not be goaded into sacking until an investigation is carried out.

This appears to have been done as they suggested.

Unlike past governments this government believes in due process and fair hearings.

Others even promoted indicted officials.

Lawal has gone after due process was done

The journalist who wrote that piece actually wrote his name under, you can contest your facts with him. If you want, I can post the full article here for you. Buhari only sacrificed Lawal for public image. Argue with your head, convince yourself.

That was the headline, but the koko of the matter is that:

He, however, assured Nigerians that President Muhammadu Buhari is determined to get to the bottom of the matter of the impunity that led to Maina’s reinstatement.

“Everything will be uncovered in due course. This just goes to show us the scale of corruption that this government is fighting. And, as we can all see, corruption keeps fighting back viciously,” he added.

The koko of the matter is their exposed foolishness! How can a sane person insinuate that Dambazau and co are loyalists of GEJ? Can anyone be more stupid than this personified Garbage?

Also, he said “It doesn’t mean every time a minor review is due, the tariff will increase. If exchange rate is N165 (to a dollar) when the tariff was reviewed and then it goes to N400, put yourself in their shoes,” who made $1=#400? Isn't it their team of blind, senseless and foolish leaders?

You don't just make come here and make childish noise simply because your mind tells you it's the right thing.

Now you ran straight to hide under the constitution. When you cited the 'neighbor' example, was constitution existing? Also, if the constitution allows him to be private about his heath status, why were his media aides returning from social media to radio stations just to convince the masses that the president is healthy? Why were they announcing that they received calls from people that stayed close to the president? Most things in life require commonsense, and instincts, not a set of words called constitution.

When the govt loses a court case, those who hate this govt always rush to scream "media trial". But when they win, the same haters get ashamed and hide their ugly faces to the EFCC's success. Truth is, in legal matters, you win some and lose some.
But I keep wondering... Is it not money that belongs to all the citizens of Nigeria that was looted? How come some are happy that criminals will keep their loots and walk free when others don't know where their next meal will come from?
Why has politics so blinded us to our suffering reality that we overlook it for people who don't care about you.
I expect every single Nigerian to always condemn corruption whether you hate the president or not. We should not be this shameless if we expect the country to become better in the near future.
Having said that, the only case where it looks like the judiciary gave corrupt judgement is the Justice Ademola's case which the F. G has appealed.

I believe you didn't limit your scope of corruption to finance alone, if my assumption is right, then tell me what Babachir is still doing in Buhari's istration.

The Federal Government says that it will demarcate 6,000km cattle routes across the country in 2017.

Alhaji Mahmud Bello, the National Coordinator, Grazing Stock Routes, Federal Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria in Mararaba Dajin, Tafawa Balewa Local Government Area of Bauchi State.

Bello said: “We are going to provide 6,000 kilometres of cattle routes across the country; we are going to open the primary routes first, while the state and local governments are expected to launch the secondary routes.

“By the time we identify the primary stock routes, being frequently used, we will develop them.
“All the same, all the states may not have an equal share of the routes; Bauchi may have 200 kilometres and Plateau may have 50 kilometres but we are going to spread it.”

Bello said that the cattle routes were aimed at boosting livestock production, adding that crop farming had benefited a lot from the agricultural policies of the previous istrations.

He said that the ministry would also improve the genetic resources of the indigenous cow, which was currently producing 1.5 litres of milk per day, to enable it to produce 25 litres of milk per day.

According to him, the new plans will prevent people, particularly farmers, from encroaching into stock routes, grazing areas and selling those areas that have been mapped out as graving reserves since 1962.
Bello said that dams, boreholes, grazing reserves, stock routes and other facilities, which the government had earlier provided for the pastoralists, would be handed over to them for optimal utilisation.

He noted that such facilities were hitherto abandoned by herdsmen who decided to migrate to other areas, thereby resulting in their clashes with farmers.
He said: “This time around, the Federal Government will strive to hand over all the facilities to the pastoralists so as to enable them to take care of them.

“Besides, we are going to develop 50 hectares of land as pasture development centres for seed multiplication in all the grazing reserves in the country.

“The centres will serve as seed banks for commercial pasture production, as part of the goals of the proposed youth empowerment programme.”

Bello recalled that the Federal Government had, in 2016, requested state governments to provide 5,000 hectares of land within their grazing reserves for commercial pasture production.

He said that when the pasture development project was executed, it would encourage pastoralists, who were migrating in search of pasture and water for their animals, to settle down in one place.

He said that in 2016, the ministry carried out a public sensitisation campaign on the programme in 10 states, adding that it was currently carrying out the campaign in five other states.

So, this istration finally has something positive to say about its predecessor.
