It's the same everywhere in the world. You can't disassociate them especially the Igbos and their Southern siblings i.e. those that answer similar names with other Igbo groups. The USA can never disassociate from the British no matter how much they have tried, I have heard people refer to "London" as America. The Germans cannot disassociate from Austrians, an uninformed outsider would always see them as one.

Heck, even an average Nigerian refers to Asians as "Whites" even though Europeans and "White" American would laugh at that. Yesterday, my lil bro was watching a Filipino movie (I hate that shít) and my momma kept referring to them as "Ndi Ocha" which is a term used for white people (and also light skinned people by the way). The point is: Even if I explain why they are not "Ndi Ocha" to an average American white Caucasian, my mother wouldn't stop calling those Filipinos "Ndi Ocha."

Finally, whether we like it or not, to outsiders: Austrians would always be connected to Germans, Americans (which are already mixed up with different ethnicities), Australians, and Canadians would always be connected to the British. The South African Boers would always be connected to the Dutch, and the same thing with Igbos and their Southern siblings with similar names.

As someone who grew up with different ethnicities and in the North, I never knew there were any people different from Igbos but answered similar names. I used to look up to a man in our hood, I called him "brother." I liked that man a lot and had huge respect for him maybe because he was confident with women grin. His name was Onyema and all of his kids answered Igbo names. We Northerners didn't care that he said he was different from an Igbo person, we still saw him as one even though we nodded when he'd explain that he wasn't Igbo.

Funny enough, he had Igbo friends grin and felt safe with them when things got usually crazy in Arewa (North).

So boss, until the end of the world, people would always do that shít. I have an Igbo mother and I have never heard her talk about some "Igbo" people in the south south. I learned more about this people on NL and the internet. Lol.

Your assertion that you can’t disassociate Igbo and their so called southern sibling is so wrong, as the Igbo and other southerners most especially those from the south-southerners have distinct historical, cultural and linguistic heritage, in as much it should be noted that they share geographical proximity and some cultural similarities (due to the migration that might have happened between the two groups) but we should realize that their cultural and historical context are differences.
Your falses equivalencies of USA/UK to Igbo and other southerners was so wrong too, The USA and the UK share a colonial history, with the UK being the colonial power and the USA gaining independence in 1776. This historical connection has shaped their cultural, linguistic, and political ties. In contrast, the Igbo people and other ethnic groups in the region do not share a similar colonial history or cultural heritage. While they may share geographic proximity and some cultural similarities, their historical and cultural contexts are distinct. You saying you can’t disassociate Igbo from their other southerners is a way of undermining the cultural, historical heritage of other southerners thus my reason for lashing out earlier, I apologize for that tho.

NDLEA is not supposed to check anyone's port - they are not immigration

NDLEA has the Fvckin right to check your port, they can check due to the reasons below

1. Interception of illicit drugs NDLEA may check ports to identify and intercept individuals attempting to smuggle illicit drugs into or out of the country.
2. Travel history and patterns By examining your port, NDLEA may be able to identify suspicious travel patterns, such as frequent travel to countries known for drug trafficking.
3. Verification of identity: NDLEA may check ports to the identity of travelers, ensuring that individuals are who they claim to be.

The dude is just looking for someone to fight with, if I happened to be an officer at the airport I’ll have the idiot detained

Lol...utter nonsense! More gibberish and even more buffonery in an attempt to appear more ignorant. I read halfway and could not contain my disdain for brazen half knowledge. Who truky need more schooling here on economics and exhange rate systems.

To start with, someone who does not know the full meaning of a floated exchange system and can not distinguish it from what is being practiced currently is even more ignorant than others he claims he is trying to educate(school). No floated exchange rate system has majority of its forex with the Central Bank/Reseve Bank. That sits with commercial banks. Again, no fully floated system sells forex to black market sellers at a rate different from the ruling market rate. This certainly is not practiced by US Federal Reserve,Bank of Canada, Bank of England, Bank of Australia, etc...who practice fully floated system. Those are just two examples, there are many more.

You could want to argue that these Banks I metioned above also intervene when the market hits a disequilibrium, that is right, but none of them take from their foreing or local reserves to try and force the rates back to equilibrum. They use monetary policy instruments like the LIBOR, prime rates, treasury bond rates/ risk free rates, etc to adjust things. NONE, I repeat, NONE sell forex to black market people at a different rates to the market under the guise influencing the rates to equilibrum and then monitor by taking s from the same sellers, in a system that has or intelligent information system to ensure credible data and integrity of the / reports from the BDCs.

Another mumbo jumbo from you is that the aim of unifying the exchange rate was not to eliminate black market, but the question to ask you then is what exactly did the government mean by saying they were unifying the rates?....should that not mean the elimination of multiple rates as there were two rates before the unification?

Nothing has changed, really, the only thingbthat has happened is that the Nigerian government devalued naira(IMF/Reuters/Bloomberg and other credible sources called it out as devaluation in February 2024 when CBN came to announce that there was an error in the system used to calcukate the market rate by FMDQ) amd as such the rates quoted were lower than it should be......imagine? As if they were using MS excel to determine rates before.

To the existence of black market in a floated exhange rate system as normal using India(uses a managed floating system), Brazil( floating exhange rate system but pegged to USD, EURO and Yuan for imports and exports making it a managed one) and Russia( which uses intervention system before the
war and sanctions crises) while stating that Nigeria uses a fully floating exchange system shows how shallow and ignorant you are with regards to international finance and exhange systems. At this point, I knew you didn't know more than the surface on the subject you were claiming expertise in

I initially thought you had the stuff hence I was willing to engage but reading through all you have posted here, it is not different from what a government spokesman would say. It is devoid of any critical review to be sure of it is correct or not and if there are alternative views to explaining them. As someone else posted, it is lie-lie economics they sold to you all and you swallowd hook line and sinker, without thinking, as they predicted..

Lol...lie-lie economics, announced by the govt., peddled by the lowly intelligents.

Let’s do a paragraph by paragraph invalidity test
In your first paragraph you asserted that countries practicing floating exchange rate system has its foreign reserves in commercial bank that’s a blatant lie In a floating exchange rate system, the central bank typically holds the majority of the country's foreign exchange reserves, not commercial banks.
The central bank uses these reserves to manage the country's monetary policy, maintain financial stability, and intervene in the foreign exchange market if necessary.
Commercial banks, on the other hand, hold foreign exchange deposits and engage in foreign exchange transactions, but they do not typically hold the majority of the country's foreign exchange reserves. I hope I clarify the differences now

You further asserted that no fully floated system sells forex to black market, yeah you absolutely right Infact BOE, US feds none engage in this act, the fact CBN sells forex to black market negates the fully floated exchange rate system, you’re right that why I said earlier I quote “but I’m not so stupid to believe our fate is been decided by market forces alone that why I brought the concept of managed floating system which is a normal global economic standard where govt once in a while intervene in this exchange rate” this is where I postulated that nigeria is practicing a managed floating exchange rate system and I feel this is largely due to the fact that we’re oil dependent and external shock or global change in oil prices can have direct impact on our economic in order to buffer this effect we run a managed floated exchange rate where we have govt intervention not only using monetary policy tools but by selling forex to Black market I never asserted that nigeria exchange rate is fully floated but managed floated as a result of these interventions

Now to the unification of the exchange rate
Unifying exchange rates means having only one exchange rate for a country's currency.
Now it is thereby instructive for you to note that in as much as unification of an exchange rate can potentially eliminate the parallel market but it is not guarantee. There will still be prevalence of parallel market/black market rate like I point earlier I quote due to some reasons “... but black market will continue to strive due to reasons like demand and supply imbalance, restrictions and regulations, speculation and arbitrage, lack of access to official channels” now let’s me break it down

Demand and supply imbalances
Imagine a store selling dollars. If there aren't enough dollars (supply) to meet demand, people might turn to the black market. Unifying the exchange rate won't fix this imbalance.
Restrictions and Regulations
Suppose the government restricts who can buy dollars or sets limits on how much can be bought. This can drive people to the black market, where they can buy dollars without restrictions.
Speculation and Arbitrage*
Traders might exploit price differences between the official and black markets. For example, if the official rate is 1 USD = 500 Naira, but the black market rate is 1 USD = 600 Naira, traders might buy dollars at the official rate and sell them on the black market for a profit
Lack of Access to Official Channels
If people can't access official foreign exchange channels (e.g., banks), they might turn to the black market. Unifying the exchange rate won't help if people can't access the official market. Funny how how many Nigeria go to bank for forex nah BDC all of us dey go cos of easy accessibility
In conclusion Unifying an exchange rate is not a magic solution to eliminate the black market. The underlying issues driving the black market must be addressed to reduce its prevalence.

I have never seen a more confused contradictions and juxtaposing of realities of the exhange rate systems in one shot...

Two key ones

1. That Nigeria is running a fully floated exgange rate system.? This has been debated several times here on Nairaland and all came to the major conclusion that going by the definition of a floated exhange rate system, Nigeria was not running a floated exhange rate system...all na wash.

2. That there is one unified exhange rate in Nigeria and no black market? (I stopped reading at this point) Why do they have a different rate from FMDQ and a different rate from.BDCs? Why do you even have BDCs when there are banks??

The fact that you are not aware or pretend not to know there is till a thriving black market in the forex system shows how insulated and disconneted you are from what is truly going on.

Most of nairaland folks are ignorant when it comes to issues on macroeconomic but let me school you

Nigeria has been practicing a floating exchange rate system since July 2023 this made naira drop at first to 750 but as time goes due to the higher demand for dollar it made it 1400 here we are at 1580, this is demand and supply pushing your exchange rate had it been we’re practicing a fixed exchange rate there would have several govt intervention such as what osinbajo did to manage our currency some years back but this Tinubu istration has sit back and let the market forces decide our fate, but I’m not so stupid to believe our fate is been decided by market forces alone that why I brought the concept of managed floating system which is a normal global economic standard where govt once in a while intervene in this exchange rate and it’s not a bad thing cos for a oil dependent country like a Nigeria practicing a floating system is going to cause a lot of economic instability for us, cos crisis in the gulf or Change in global oil practices can affect our exchange that’s where govt sometimes comes in to buffer these effect now sentimentally I believe Nigeria is practicing a managed float system. The difference between the managed float system and fixed exchanges rate system is that unlike the fixed the price of a currency is not been pegged at a particular where govt now pours a lot of money to keep this price at this rate but rather the managed float system only govt to intervene once in a while during global crisis or external shock

Government unifying an exchange rate doesn’t mean there won’t be black market but it will reduce the prevalence of black market, but black market will continue to strive due to reasons like demand and supply imbalance, restrictions and regulations, speculation and arbitrage, lack of access to official channels I don’t want to break this down one by one but unifying exchange is not to eliminate the activity of black market as they would continue to strive regardless but it is meant improve market driven exchange rate, increase transparency and access and also ensure strict effective regulations and enforcement e.g the DSS clampdown on this BDCs
Russia, India, Brazil also have black market just like Nigeria but it should noted that in all these countries their activities are been regulated

While at the same time, Nigeria's foreign reserves lost approximately $1.3 Billion. Does anyone else see something here? 🙄🙄🙄

By the way, why is there still a black market when almost 18 months ago we were promised that all forex windows would be collapsed into just the one by the CBN? 🙄🙄🙄🙄

Nobody is helping you to see the rubbish you’re seeing there are three major way exchange rate is been controlled we have fixed system, this is when govt intervene in the market to keep the currency pegged at a certain amount, we have the floating system which Nigeria is currently practicing, this expose the market rate to market forces I.e supply and demand, this often makes the currency so volatile due to external shock or global issues especially in a complex and multifaceted global system where there are tons of activities going on in milli seconds, it makes it worst for a oil-dependent country like nigeria where a change in global oil prices can affect our currency ASAP and there’s no monetary policy introduced by Cardozo can save us from this economic woes that’s why sometimes most govt that practice this floating system sometimes used the managed floating system where the govt intervene once in a blue moon in order to buffer against external shocks or global issues. These are global economic standards
The issue of depleting foreign reserves you raised has nothing to do with exchange rate, its most largely attributed to meeting international payment obligations/debt service and also managing economic shock e.g the present tariff raised by the USA
It is instructive for you to know that presently all forex window are collapsed to be one since, as both the parallel market and the black market rate are also the same all thanks to the clampdown on BDCs and aboki, the currency is now getting stable, dollar/NGN is now at 1600 for more 3 weeks now
The breaking below the 1600 is a result of the effective monetary policy by the CBN for all BDC to give a daily of their transaction with this you’re preventing the unnecessary proliferation of dollars by some individuals.

I’m not suprised tho, neither should the world bank be, by the floating of naira by this present istration we should know our doom was imminent, for a currency so weak, with little/no demand to be determined by the market forces we shouldn’t expect less. To expose the naira to market forces like the oil prices (our major export) which on a global scale has been experiencing downturn, and the fact that our local industry are so non-existent or ineffective, with has led to reduction in our global demand for nigeria goods, we’re basically a consumptive nation not a productive one as we rely on import rather than export which is obvious in our trade surplus over the past few years, with this factors and economic indicative stated our naira’s doom is imminent.

In as much this ain’t the Nigeria we want, i would still point out the obvious, secession has to follow a due process, you see in a state setting sovereignty is so paramount and very essential to a state, no state has the right to meddle into another state internal affairs, UK can’t secede Yoruba nation from nigeria it’s impossible, so igboho move is tactless and useless, Igboho should have requested for a referendum from the Nigerian government same way Scotland did in their secession quest from this same UK in 2014, Catalonia did the same in the secession quest from Spain in 2017, referendum is the logical/legal way of pursuing a secession not going to another country to submit a secession petition that’s so unreasonable, in a Situation where referendum is not granted you can unilaterally secede just like northern Cyprus did in 1983, but does igboho have international backing they did with turkey I doubt, secession process is so complex multi faceted it’s more than this tomfoolery they’re doing. Thanks

It’s just obvious igboho and his cohort are just catching cruise, if not for inferior complexity what did they expect the UK govt to do, to compel the federal government to secede them from Nigeria? Nah this ain’t done that way. There are different ways a country can seceded
1 consensual secession ( this is a mutual agreement between the country and the seceded one)
2 unilateral secession (one sided decision)
3 secession through conflict
There’s never been in history of any country that have successfully seceded by mere submission of a secession petition that’s the highest stage foolery, secession that is not done through conflict or war outbreaks like the Bangladesh-Pakistan in 1971 is done by referendum like Norway Sweden in 1905.
If truly they want secession just like the Uk govt has rightly said they should approach their home country for it maybe they could grant them referendum for that. UK has no power to secede a country from another that’s the height of ignorance I see Sunday’s move as clownish and lack substance

Fraudiola had this thought before but now he is wiser with Haaland, without Messi.

Thank God you mention guardiola, Top team this days doesn’t rely on a top nine as it used to be, tuchel won the champions league with no top nine and half of the goals from defenders, the like of Werner, Harvetz were blunt but yet we played so well, why was it that when we bought lukaku our woes didn’t stop we were barely creating goal scoring chances, the great guardiola in his Bayern team didn’t rely on his top nine the likes of Ribery, robben were balling for him, mandzukic and Pizarro went just an icing on the cake for them. Nicolas is playing a Trequartista forward role for us that’s why we seem to be creating tons of chances every game and it’s not like that when guiu is playing, funny how the Osihmen y’all want Us to sign is a similar profile to guiu(tho better in term of prolificacy) but they both rely on their strength which is their pace and physical strength, and this is not enough in the premier league where we have both fast and physical defenders y’all should cut Jackson some slack abegiii the likes of Nunez, holjund (with their expensive tag) are also missing big chances but yet he still manage to outscore them without penalty goals, this is his second year in the premier league he still has a lot to offer and has Shown promises so far let’s just stick with him and trust him even drogba had it worst in his first year too.

I don’t want us to have a team where we will have to rely on a top nine to score even now and then for us what happens if the top striker is injured or unavailable, our attack is getting prolific thanks to madueke’s improvement and nice gs in nkunku,Neto and Felix which are renowned for the prolificacy in front of goal we are no more cole Palmer FC.

Wait, Chelsea fans complaining? Were you expecting us to beat us to beat a tactically astute man city, yea we totally outclassed them last season the reality is this is a new season and we are just getting started with a new coach.
I’m actually impressed with maresca today, he played what I wanted but a bit conservative, it would be an unwise for us to invert either full backs today, with crazy players like Doku and savio coming up against us, so the trio of Lavia enzo conceido make sense with lavia dropping to do what cucurella would have done , in the first half we did tho didn’t create much chances but we shut the potential threat of savio and doku and also cut down the supply to Haaland by controlling the midfield perfectly but the individual brilliance of haaland saved the day Ngl.
Second half was a bit different the tactic indeed worked to keep the man city threat mitigated but the truth is we’ve not been creative, I was expecting him to sub either conceido or Enzo out of the game with Palmer in the midfield and madueke in the wing at least his take ons will create more space for us to do something would give us an edge of gvardiol but maresca had other ideas and we paid for it dearly with a long range shot from kovavic. Conceido was not in form today ngl tho he shows spark of brilliance but average at best both enzo and conceido were off physically today thus we saw the way kovasic overpower them in his build-up to the game there are tons of positive to pick from the game tho like defense has kinda improve and little or less pressure from them in the build up thanks to lavia. The team is showing potential let’s hope things get better up Chelsea
