Anambra State Governor, Mr. Willie Obiano, on Wednesday described as irresponsible governors who “sleep” without paying the salaries of workers in their state.
Obiano stated this at the Jerome Udoji secretariat, Awka, the state capital, during the 2015 civil service day celebration, where he reassured the state workers of regular salaries despite the prevailing economic difficulties.
The governor, who described the civil service as the cornerstone of his istration, said, “No responsible government goes to sleep when its workforce is having sleepless nights.”
He said in the past one year, his istration had demonstrated a great deal of sensitivity to the plight of workers. .
He added, “A few weeks after I was sworn in as your governor, we took bold steps to look into the difficulties workers were having in transporting themselves to Awka from various parts of the state.
“Consequently, we provided four buses to convey workers from Onitsha, Otuocha, Nnewi and Ekwulobia to and from Awka. We also donated three buses to NLC, NUC and JNC.
“Similarly, less than one year into my istration, we increased workers’ salaries by 15 per cent.
“I also assured you that I would do more if our Internally Generated Revenue grows. Interestingly, we increased salaries at a time when oil prices were crashing and governments were looking for bailouts.
“In spite of the prevailing difficulties, we have kept our promise to always pay your salaries regularly.”

The House of Representatives on Wednesday, urged the Federal Government to address the menace of accidents involving fuel tankers in the country. The call followed a motion by Evelyn Oboro (Delta-PDP), who said that road crashes involving the trucks had been rampant and destructive.
Oboro said that the incidents had, most times, led to outbreak of fire that had claimed many lives and properties. The motion was unanimously adopted by during plenary.
The House recalled the recent incident in Ikorodu, Lagos state, when a petroleum truck lost control, killed three persons and destroyed properties worth millions of naira.

It also recalled another incident in Onitsha where a tanker crashed into a vehicle loaded with engers at the Asaba park, leading to fire which burnt no fewer than 70 people to death and many vehicles.
In addition to the call on the government on the issue, the lawmakers resolved to constitute an ad hoc committee to meet the leadership of petroleum tanker drivers over it.
The committee would also liaise with the Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) and other relevant bodies to find ways to curb the excesses of the tanker drivers.

Governor Nasir El Rufai of Kaduna State, Wednesday, appointed a Special Assistant on Persons with Disability. This seems to be in reaction to the threat by beggars in the state to bring down his government.

A statement signed by Samuel Aruwan, Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the governor, disclosed that El-Rufai has appointed Aliyu Muhammed Salisu as his Special Assistant on Persons with Disability.

Salisu, who hails from Sabon Gari, Zaria, holds a diploma in Special Education from the Kaduna Polytechnic and another diploma in Guidance and Counseling from the Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria.

He is a member of the National Association of the Blind and has worked at the Kaduna State Rehabilitation Centre. He is the chairman of the Braille Production Centre in Kaduna.

Recalled that beggars in the state on Monday threatened to bring down El-Rufai government if he fails to reverse the ban on begging or provide alternative means of income, stressing that they used proceeds from begging to enthrone him as the governor of the state.

“We decided to El Rufai, because we were tired of the then Governor, (Mukhtar Ramalan Yero) who did not show any regards to our survival. We worked hard, spent money and prayed and God heard our prayers and brought down Yero.

“Now, it would appear that we made a mistake. The new governor wants to bring us down. He does not want us to live. He has chased us out of the streets and has made no alternative arrangement for our survival.

“We are asking the governor to rescind this decision now or find ways to meet our basic needs.
“If he refuses to heed to this demand, we shall make sure we bring down his government. We are not going to pray that he dies, even if he wishes us so. We are not going to say that he should be impeached, because we voted him to power. What we will do is to hand him over to the Almighty God, and we know he will remove him the same way he removed the former person. We are servants of God, and he always hear our cry,” Kaduna State Beggars Association said in a statement on Monday.
