I graduated in 2011. And since then I have being from one job to another,
Osemigho:
After you figure out what your potential supervisors are doing, you play with words to tailor your email. For instance, petroleum and solar falls under energy. You can use energy or solar energy when reaching out to petroleum profs. You can also focus on your area of interest rather than past research. Sorry if you answered these questions before but let me ask to make sure you are on the right path.
1. Are you going for a masters or PhD?
2. What is your highest degree and GPA?
3. When did you graduate from your last program? What have you been doing since then?

Lekiboboe has given a very great reply.
Just a little addition, even if you don't have a research experience in the area, two things can help:
1. Before sending a cold email to any prof, try to read at least one of his recent publications in the area you are interested in. This will give the prof an impression that you are not lazy and that you can understand a research paper. It may be daunting at first, but you will get used to it with time. From the paper, you can get an idea of the future work the prof wants to do. In your email, you should state that you have read the paper, and suggest that you would like to work on one or more of the future research areas in the paper (mention the research exactly).
In fact, if the paper is *not freely* available online, and you have to pay to it, you can email the prof that you are interested in his work and ask for a copy of the paper. Mention that you are from a developing country and you don't have access to a paid journal. You could even build a relationship from there.
2. Since you have worked with solar and not petroleum, some skills are transferable. For example, mathematical modelling or programming skills like MATLAB. So, you can mention some of those skills and experience that you think you can apply to petroleum research. Showing interest is a key thing, you may not have all the skills.
Best of luck!

Wow it seems sir, u are grounded in this geophysics field. Am grateful for your response. I will look into what you have said and draft another email, but before sending, I will post it here for reviews, so I know if am on the right track.
Lekiboboe:
You are welcome
The thing is Professors are looking for Prospective Graduate students who are best fit for their research labs/groups and the likes of Academic background or Research experience of a Student is very important as related to what they do is important, and from your transcript they would know if you have the background or not.
Try to go for a Research Area or Research areas within your field of study (Academic background or your Final Year Project Research)
You will find the following content useful if you wanna Study in Canada and Stay in Canada after your studies.
Sometimes last year, I read on Twitter that "the demand for crude oil is reducing in Canada, as electric/hybrid vehicles are replacing Gasoline vehicles gradually and this is reducing the relevance of Crude Oil in Canada to some extent. You know what this means in the nearest future.
That being said, the post advised graduates (Bachelor's, Masters) of Petroleum Engineering, Chemical Engineering to go for research-based Masters in research areas like
- Energy and Sustainability
- Renewable Energy
- Bioenergy/biofuel
- Environmental Engineering
- Pollution (Air, Water, Land)
- Greenhouse Gases (GHG) and lots more
As a Physics graduate, you can tailor your Academic background and Research Experience (final year project) to areas like Energy and Sustainability, Renewable Energy, Bioenergy/biofuel (which is related to Solar), Environmental Engineering, Pollution (Air, Water, Land), Greenhouse Gases (GHG) which is related to Meteorology (atmospheric Physics) and Climate Science etc.
There are lots of Research Opportunities (usually Fully-funded in of scholarship) in the above Research Areas, so take your time and do serious research on the above research areas you know within yourself you would be potentially good at (good fit) for a masters degree.
Alternatively,as a Physics graduate, since you are still interested in the Oil industry, you can try going for GEOPHYSICS for your Masters degree in the areas like:
- hydrocarbon reservoirs and their geophysical responses
- how to utilise geophysical data for understanding and detecting reservoirs
- systematic research on geology, structure and seismology
- exploring and identifying both conventional and unconventional reservoirs
- providing innovative theory
- developing leading processing techniques that enable more reliable interpretations of sub-surface structure etc.
Await more Contributions from other on this platform
Good luck!!!!!!

Thank you sir, I will look into it. Am very grateful for the responses so far. But I have a challenge with area of research, u know our Nigerian school system, we dnt do research and most times after school, we dnt tend to get a job in line with what we studied.
I have always wanted to work in an oil company so I can have an experience, but it never came even after series of applications and interviews. Also with respect to my final year project, it was not related to anything petroleum, but Solar, but I have always had interest in petroleum, that's why I want to do a masters in that area. Pls how do I go abt this when I dnt have research experience and also my final year project was not in petroleum.
Lekiboboe:
In addition to what Hon. Osemigho has said, work on your CV and make it an ACADEMIC CV Standard
Cos on your Academic CV,
- You have no Research Interests (focus) mentioned
- Your Research Experience as a degree holder was not detailed (final year project)
- Professional Summary is for a Résumé, not for an Academic Cv
- Address should be your town , state and Country e.g Ammasoma, Bayesla State, Nigeria
-High school information is not needed on an Academic Cv, your Degree is enough
- Your Technical skills in the field of petroleum geology wasn't mentioned. Softwares you make use of in your field wasn't mentioned
- References you need at least 3
and some other things you need to address to have a well packaged and detailed Academic CV.
Visit the link,(scroll down to see the attachment) there is a well detailed Academic CV by a Nigerian PostDoc fellow at UBC, Canada (Dr. OLUMUYIWAAYO), use the structure of his ACADEMIC CV to revamp yours, your Academic CV should be in PDF and let it be named in your name e.g SEMEDO POCOTUA VASQUEZ_CV
There are some beneficial info in this same link you can apply to your field of discipline and research interests (research focus)

Good luck!!!!

Wow thank you so much sir. I Will look into what you said.
Osemigho:
Hi,
Did the school really assign you to the prof? How? I need to understand your first paragraph well. Secondly, your second paragraph is slightly confusing about your purpose and interest. You can break the paragraph and simplify your statements by removing uncessary words. To remove unnecessary words, read the statement to yourself loud and ask what is not necessary e.g.
Your version
I am interested in the research you are conducting on the kinetics of rock forming processes like nucleation, crystal growth and chemical diffusion and how these processes contribute to the mineral content, mineral chemistry and texture of a rock.
My simplified version
I am interested in your research on the kinetics of rock formation and how these processes contribute to rock texture, mineral content, and mineral chemistry.
Simplified statements are usually very easy to read and comprehend. Some Canadian professors overlook them and are willing to train you on it as part of your graduate study. Many professors expect you to know how to write at the graduate level before you start your graduate program. The second group will reject or not answer your email if your writing is not at their expected level.
You also mentioned that the prof is interested in spatial distribution of mineral grains. That threw me off for a second because it complement the first area of research interest but it slightly different. I think the problem here is that you may or may not understand the prof real area of research interest. You will have to read the prof summary of recent journal papers or books to really know what the person is interested in.
Finally, you mention your distribute diesel and want to Canada petroleum company before you establish your own. This is a mismatch of purpose because a masters of PhD is a learning platform provided by universities not petroleum company. Most supervisors also prefer people that want to be researchers like them. So it might be a bad idea for you to say otherwise to them before they accept you. Don't get me wrong. Like many of us that came here for masters in the past, we no dey do PhD. Many of my PhD graduate friends are also working professionally and not interested in the academia. Like an interview skill, for most professors to accept you as a masters or PhD student, you may need to tell them you are highly interested in the academia, PhD, Journal publishing, and all those things.
Don't misinterpret me. Your writing is not bad. You just have some "Canadian" writing style to learn. You will learn and improve them when you get here. You can also use tools like Grammarly to help detect and correct your writing errors and complexity. All the best.

Good afternoon friends, hope we are doing well. Pls I need help on this email I send to Supervisors to get a school in Canada, I have sent them emails, but no response and some deadlines have past. I dnt know if my email to them is in correct order, I also send my CV, TRANSCRIPT AND CERTIFICATE. Below is one of the letters I sent, I also posted my CV. Pls gurus in the house, pls help me
Dear Prof. Fred Gaidies
My name is Okafor Onyinye Augusta, a graduate of Physics and Industrial Physics, with second class honours (upper division, CGPA 3.84) From Nnamdi Azikiwe University Awka, Nigeria. I am a candidate for the MSc Earth science program at the University of Carleton to begin in Fall 2022. The department assigned you to me as my Supervisor. The purpose of this e-mail is to enquire about the availability of masters graduate student positions in your lab.
I am interested in the research you are conducting on the kinetics of rock forming processes like nucleation, crystal growth and chemical diffusion and how these processes contribute to the mineral content, mineral chemistry and texture of a rock. The basis of my interest in your research is due to my scientific interest in hydrocarbon exploration, and how these hydrocarbons build up in rocks (mostly sedementary rocks). Your research interest in the spatial distribution of mineral grains in rocks would provide me with informations about the rock and fluid properties, and 3D seismic images, all of which are used to develop 2D and 3D maps and models of the subsurface and the distribution of petroleum resources, and to calculate volumes of oil and natural gas that exist in different areas. I currently run a ed petroleum company : REHOBOTH INVESTMENT AND PETROLEUM SERVICES LIMITED, and the Service I carry out is to source Diesel (AGO) from Depots and suppliers and deliver it to the end s(Hotels, Schools, hospitals, and banks). Working with you as my Supervisor will help me achieve my dreams of growing my petroleum company into an exploration and production company. I believe working with you would expose me to all I need to know about hydrocarbon exploration from rocks. I look forward to ing the petroleum company over there in Canada and thereafter establish my own company, thereby contributing to the energy sector of the country
I have attached my CV, CERTIFICATE and TRANSCRIPT for your consideration. I look forward to hearing positively from you as the deadline for submission is near (February 1st 2022). Thank you for taking the time to read my e-mail.
Kind regards,
OKAFOR ONYINYE AUGUSTA
