Nigerian troops shot dead four suspected Boko Haram Islamists
on Friday during a dawn raid on one of the group’s presumed
hideouts in Kano, the army said.
Boko Haram used the building to produce propaganda material,
including fliers that had been distributed around Kano, as well as
video messages posted on YouTube, the army statement added.
“During the encounter, four of the terrorist elements
were killed,” army spokesman, Lt. Ikedichi Iweha said of the raid
in Kano’s Unguwa Uku district.
Items recovered included improvised explosive devices, a pistol,
ammunition, lap tops, scanners, a printer and four police identity
cards, presumably stolen after previous attacks on the city’s
police, the army said.
“Uniforms of security agencies being used by the terrorist gangs
were also recovered,” Iweha said in the statement.
Boko Haram gunmen have in the past dressed up as security
agents to gain access to guarded sites.
Kano is the largest city in Nigeria’s mainly Muslim North and was
the site of Boko Haram deadliest ever attack on January 20 when
at least 185 people were killed.
The radical group has also been blamed for a series of gun and
bomb attacks on police posts in Kano.
The Friday raid was carried out based on tips provided by city
residents, the army said.
Nigerian soldiers killed at least 16 suspected militants during a raid
last week in Maiduguri, the North-Eastern city seen as Boko
Haram’s base.

ABUJA—VICE Chairman, Senate Committee on Industries, Senator Ibrahim Musa, C, Niger North, said, yesterday, that President Goodluck Jonathan should have named the National Stadium, Abuja, after late Chief M.K.O. Abiola instead of renaming the University of Lagos, UNILAG, in his honour.

According to the Senator, June 12 should be named democracy day in honour of the late politician and business man.
Senator Musa, who told Vanguard that the President did the right thing by sending a Bill to the Senate to approve the change of name of the university, said: “President Jonathan, at last, has done what he failed to do before renaming University of Lagos.

“This is a good development and the best way to immortalise Abiola is by renaming, not only a school after him, but more important monuments such as the National Stadium in Abuja, and declaring June 12 as democracy day.”

Also speaking with Vanguard, Vice Chairman, Senate Committee on Solid Minerals, Senator Boluwaju Kunlere, LP, Ondo South, who urged the Federal Government to name a main building in the Presidential Villa after late Chief Abiola, said: “Eagle Square or the main building of Aso Rock should be named after late Abiola so that any President coming in and going out of the Aso Rock Villa will see the name of Abiola as a man whose blood was shed for our democracy.

“It should have been appropriate to name Eagle Square, where the President takes the oath of office or the National Stadium, after him. Abiola was known as a politician because of June 12 and his love for sports.”

ing President Jonathan’s move in renaming the UNILAG after Abiola, Chairman, Senate Committee on Special Duties, Senator Ikirikpo Claver, PDP, Bayelsa East, said: “President Goodluck Jonathan’s renaming of University of Lagos after Abiola is a good one. My problem with the people of Nigeria is that people who are not in power do not appreciate what those in power are doing.

“What Nigerians should know is the issue of maintaining our educational system. Many renowned institutions have been renamed, like the famous University of Ife. They are moving on fine. We should help our leaders to do better by encouraging them and not by crucifying them.”

When asked to comment on the bill and the renaming of UNILAG, Chairman, Senate Committee on Agriculture, Senator Emmanuel Bwacha, PDP, Taraba South, simply said: “I am in agreement.”

For the Chairman, Senate Committee on Media and Publicity, Senator Enyinnaya Abaribe, PDP, Abia Central, “the Senate will debate the bill when we resume from the end of year break. I will then communicate the decision of the Senate.”

Also speaking on the bill sent to the Senate, Chairman, Committee on Rules and Business, Senator Ita Solomon Enang, PDP, Akwa Ibom North-East, said: “The President has requested the National Assembly to approve it. We cannot say yes or no now because the bill is before us. The President requested us to approve it. Comments can only be made when we are discussing the bill.”

Former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Olisa
Agbakoba, on Tuesday said his firm was set to sue Dana Airlines
on behalf of the families of the 153 engers and 10 residents of
Iju killed in Sunday’s air crash involving its plane.
He said his legal firm, OA & A, had been consulted by the families
of some of the victims to represent them in the enforcement of
their rights and claims emanating from the crash.
According to him, a database of all persons affected in the air
accident is being compiled to present a comprehensive claim.
“This is a complementary public interest litigation and advocacy
initiative by the firm to those who have suffered varying
degrees of losses. The suit will be commenced soon,” Agbakoba
said.
He said OA&A had written to the Chief Coroner of Lagos State,
requesting an inquest into the death of the victims.
The letter, a copy of which was forwarded to our correspondent,
read, “Olisa Agbakoba and Associates/HURILAWS give you notice
of the fatal accident resulting in the deaths of 153 persons including
pilots and crew, that occurred on June 3, 2012 involving Dana
airline flight 992 within your jurisdiction in the Iju-Ishaga Agege
area of Lagos state.
“The crash also caused collateral damage resulting in fatalities in
residential accommodation located at Iju-Ishaga. Pursuant to s. 15
(1) of the Coroners System Law 2007 of Lagos state which
provides thus: The Coroner shall hold an inquest whenever he is
informed that the death of a deceased person lying within his
Coroners District was a result of death in a violent, unnatural or
suspicious situation.”

An Upper Area Court in Jos on Monday sentenced a 30-year-old
trader, Albert Chukwu, to six months imprisonment for cheating
his girlfriend, Miss Mary Okoro, of N70,000.
The court, however, gave him an option to pay N5,000 fine and
ordered him to pay back the N70,000.
The Presiding Judge, Malam Mustapha Hassan, said the
confessional statement made by the convict assisted the court to
“quickly convict him.”
The judge said, “The court relied heavily on Section 157 (1) of the
Criminal Procedure Code (C), which stipulates quick judgment
for any suspect that pleads guilty to his or her offence.”
The prosecutor, Mr. Gokwat Ibrahim, had told the court that the
convict committed the offence on May 2.
“On the said date, one Marry Okoro reported to Laranto Police
Station that the convict had cheated her of N50,000 as well as her
cell phone valued at N20,000,” he said.
Ibrahim alleged that the convict, who was a boyfriend of the lady,
came to her shop and requested for the money to clear the goods
he imported from Ghana.
“My lord, the accused, after receiving the money, disappeared into
thin air and refused to return the money.
“Some good Samaritans assisted the complainant with the
information that led to his arrest because he apparently did not
seem to have any intention to repay the money.
“During police investigation, it was found that the accused had
been receiving money from different people under the pretext of
clearing their goods,” the prosecution further said.
Ibrahim said the offence was contrary to Section 322 of the Penal
Code.
The convict pleaded guilty to the charge and begged the court for
leniency.
After handing down the judgment, the judge warned the convict
to be of good behaviour after serving his jail term, adding that the
court would not be lenient with him in future if he appeared before
it for a similar offence.

To the average Nigerian Abroad, the journey of how they
obtained their visa from Nigeria is always told with mixed
reactions, for some it was a stroll through the park, while for
others it was a age through the needle’s eye. Even the
Nigerians that were lucky enough to win the American Lottery
Visa still went through some struggles before they were able to
cross over. The struggles is usually in the form of getting all the
necessary documents together and raising the money needed for
the flight, and the medical tests. Then after all that, you have to
worry about where you would stay when you get to the U.S. As
we all know family or no family, is all about bills in the U.S. So
come prepared knowing that after 3months with your host, your
welcome is probably wearing thin.
If you are still in Nigeria and you are trying to get an
American Visa
For your relations and friends still in Nigeria who have been
rejected time and time again at the embassy for one reason or the
other, this article might ‘open their eye’ to some of the things they
should avoid doing. While this may not be authoritative
information on steps to take when applying for visa to the US,
these are some common sense things that people still miss when
applying for a U.S visa.
Be Prepared:
When applying for a US visa, you need to be prepared. Your
preparation must be total. You must have all the necessary
documents to back up any claims you have made in your
application.
Your Statement of :
One other important factor (perhaps the most important) is the
statement of you are using. If you are using your own,
make sure it is well-funded. If you are using another person's, be
prepared to establish a legitimate link with the owner of the
. The consular is particular about whether you can afford
to pay for the trip or not.
If you Are doing Group Interview:
If you plan to travel together with some people, all of you need to
be conversant with one another's documentation. Ensure that
every member of the group have legitimate and provable
documents. This is to avoid being rejected as a group or as part
of a group. In addition, if the group has never travelled before,
don't try a non-appearance application. (a situation where just a
member of the group stands in for all the other .) But if
you have, you may try it.
Choosing the Location of the Interview:
It is generally believed that the Lagos center of the US Embassy is
more difficult to secure a visa. (Especially student visa). So most
people advise applicants to apply to their Abuja office if they can
afford it.
If You Are Applying For a Minor:
The mistake most people make when applying for a minor is to
think that the child will be automatically given the visa. This is not
so with the US embassy. You need to give your ward proper and
necessary tutorials on likely questions that they will be asked. You
will be amazed at the number of minors that are rejected from
travelling everyday!
In addition, if you are applying for a minor, you need to
accompany him/her. And if you are the sponsor, your statement
of must be detailed and must show enough transactions
(deposits/withdrawal) to let them know you are capable of
sponsoring your ward.
Do Not Be Intimidated:
This is very important when applying for a US visa. You must
show enough gut to let them know that you know what you are
doing and what you are talking about. Of course the Consular
might try to intimidate and confuse you during the interview, but
you need to stay focused and maintain your stand.
Avoid Overkill:
One thing Oyinbo people hate most is to be patronizing. Answer
the consular questions without trying to be over reaching or
condescending.
Maintain Eye :
Do not show nervousness during the interview, this might be a
give-away sign that all is not well with your answers or maybe
you are trying to hide something. Maintain eye at all times
when answering questions and do not fidget.
Dress Moderately:
You are not attending a fashion show, so do not over-dress. But
what ever you are wearing, make sure you look smart and
comfortable with whatever you are wearing. Hopefully, these tips
will help you when you next apply for the U.S visa.

Oyo State Government said on Sunday that it had sacked 3,000 workers over certificate forgery and age falsification among other offences.

In a statement, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo, said the workers were sacked to save the civil service.

According to the statement, workers without letters of appointment and those having disciplinary cases are among those affected.

The statement said the Abiola Ajimobi istration inherited the staff rationalisation list from its predecessor which engaged the services of a management consultancy outfit to screen records of all public and civil servants in the state and their positions.

It stated that after the exercise, the consultancy outfit came up with the list of workers that violated the rules of engagement in the state civil service.

It added that government secured an indemnity from the consulting firm to ensure that due process was followed in compiling the list of the affected.

After ing the claims of the consulting outfit, the statement said, many of the workers who were exonerated by the had their names removed from the list before the cleansing exercise.

The statement read in part, “The state government will not continue to abet the service of workers who forged their certificates, ages or who violated their rules of engagement to stay a day longer in the workforce. It is like a cancer which, if not promptly checked, can eat up the whole of the system.”

Meanwhile, Ajimobi will on Monday swore in 11 permanent secretaries recently promoted in the civil service.

The University of Lagos Alumni Association has ed the
National Assembly in the suit filed against the Federal Government
for renaming the university the Moshood Abiola University.
The decision was taken after its extra-ordinary general meeting
penultimate Sunday.
The association had filed a suit seeking to restrain the Federal
Government from renaming UNILAG at the Federal High Court,
Lagos, last week.
The association, which claimed that President Goodluck Jonathan
erred in renaming the 50-year-old institution without following
due process, explained that the university was established by an
Act of Parliament and could therefore not be unilaterally renamed
by the President.
The body also said there was no provision for a name change in
the Act that established the university.
But in a response to this observation, Jonathan sent a bill to the
National Assembly last Wednesday asking its to okay
the name change. The bill ed through the first and second
reading at the Senate on Thursday.
Speaking on behalf of the alumni in Lagos on Sunday, Mr. Femi
Oladimeji said the association decided to the National
Assembly in the suit in view of the development in the last one
week.
Oladimeji, who is a member of the alumni executive council, said
the association would also write every member of the National
Assembly for against government’s decision to rename
the university.
To obtain the 50,000 signatures required by the National
Assembly in case of the need for a referendum on the issue, the
alumni association urged its to immediately sign in on
[email protected].
Jonathan had on May 29 renamed UNILAG after the acclaimed
winner of the June 12, 1993 presidential election, the late Chief MKO
Abiola.
But the President’s decision was widely criticised by the alumni
association, the university students and other Nigerians, who
accused him of trying to rob UNILAG to pay Abiola.
While the consensus of opinion pointed to the need to honour
Abiola, the President’s critics claimed that UNILAG, as a well-
established brand, should not be renamed after an individual to
score cheap political points.

A helicopter plunged in the outskirts of Nairobi on Sunday, killing
the Kenyan internal security minister -- a man who once served
as vice president and was a presidential contender in an
election.
Security minister George Saitoti was one of the most visible
figures in the nation's politics.
The crash killed five others -- his deputy Orwa Ojode, two pilots
and two bodyguards, President Mwai Kibaki said.
"The deaths of the six Kenyans is a devastating loss to our
country," the president said in a statement. "Minister Saitoti will
forever be ed as a hardworking and determined public
servant who dedicated his time to the service of the Kenyan
people."
Saitoti was an American-trained economist and mathematician.
As security minister, he was among key officials who oversaw
the incursion of Kenyan forces into neighboring Somalia last year
to battle the terror group, Al-Shabaab.
"It's a sad day for Kenya," said Najib Balala, a former minister,
who blamed the crash on old helicopters used by government
officials. "We could have avoided this accident with better
equipment."
Saitoti has also served in various other positions, including
minister of education.
The crash occurred in the Ngong Hills on the outskirts of Nairobi.

The greatest scientists in the world are just beginning to scratch the surface when it comes to understanding what our minds are really capable of. The mind is so unbelievably powerful in ways we could never imagine. You and I don’t need to understand exactly how it works, we just need to take care of our minds and let the magic happen.

Our subconscious mind takes orders from our conscious mind. The subconscious mind doesn’t ask questions, it doesn’t differentiate between empowering thoughts and demoralizing thoughts. It just acts upon the thoughts that we think. All outcomes and experiences in our lives are a direct result of our dominant mental thoughts. What we think, we become because our subconscious minds translate into reality our thought impulses.

When we ask ourselves a demoralizing question like “Why does this always happen to me?” our subconscious minds go to work whether we realize it or not. How do you think it responds to a demoralizing question like that? You are brilliant; it answers it with a bunch of demoralizing answers. It’s just like the computer you are reading. A computer’s output is based on its input. When a computer hacker tries to commit a cyber crime or steal someone’s identity, the computer doesn’t say it can’t do that because that’s illegal. It just performs what its instructed it to do whether it’s legal or illegal.

Our subconscious minds act the same exact way a computer does. Its output is based on its input whether it’s a positive input or a negative input. Its not rocket science, if you want to change your output, you must change its input. The quality of your life is going to depend on the quality of your thoughts. The more empowering questions you ask your subconscious mind, the more empowered you will be. You must understand that the dominate thoughts of your mind will eventually manifest into the real world.

Buddha said, “We are shaped by our thoughts. We become what we think.”

All that we are arises with our thoughts. With our thoughts, we make the world. The next time you want to let a negative thought or a demoralizing question enter your precious mind, be careful what you ask for because you are eventually going to get it.

Use incredible thoughts to manifest an incredible life. Your life will follow your thoughts. If you think it and believe it, your subconscious mind will make you achieve it. Take your ion and make it happen.
