Sadiq Abacha, son of the late Nigerian dictator Sani Abacha, has responded to the recent publication of Ibrahim Babangida’s memoir, A Journey in Service, which has reignited discussions about Nigeria’s political history. In his book, Babangida attributes the annulment of the 1993 presidential election to Sani Abacha, accusing him of plotting to overthrow his government. In a Facebook post, Sadiq defended his father’s legacy, stating that Sani Abacha was a leader whose impact remains significant despite ongoing criticism. According to him, those who portray his father negatively are motivated by envy and have aspired to emulate him in their careers. “The man Abacha—you have always been the one they envied with silent deceit,” Sadiq wrote, adding that history would ultimately judge his father favourably. He expressed pride in his father’s achievements and insisted that detractors could not diminish his legacy. Sadiq’s comments came shortly after Babangida publicly expressed regret over the annulment of the June 12, 1993, presidential election, which he acknowledged was won by Moshood Abiola of the>>>https://9jagist.ng/history-will-judge-my-father-as-a-great-leader/

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has pledged to increase to Africa to enable countries in the region re-align their healthcare services and make strategic shift towards achieving Universal Health Coverage (UHC). Dr Matchidiso Moeti, the WHO Regional Director for Africa, made the pledge in her message to mark the 2019 commemoration of “World Health Day’’ marked on April 7 every year. The regional director said that with about 100 major recurrence of public health epidemics in the region in 2018, the only way to achieve health security in Africa was the implementation of UHC. Moeti said that the organisation would, therefore, countries in the region to introduce innovative approaches in delivering health services by harnessing the power of the youth in the region. She said that the organisation would also put in place innovative systems by introducing digital solutions in the delivery of universal health coverage for people of the region. “This is why our Director-General, Dr Tedros Ghebreyesus, talks about global health security and universal health coverage being two sides of the same coin. “In Africa, the recurrence of major public health events which were over 100 in 2018 means that there can be no health security without UHC and no UHC without health security. “This year commemoration of world health day shines a spotlight on the advantages universal health coverage can bring to all people and in all places and why it is needed so much. “It is needed because it ensures that everyone no matter who they are where they live and no matter when they need it can access essential, quality health services without facing financial hardship. “Considering this, I am accelerating to Africa countries to re-align their services and consider strategic shifts to achieve UHC. “This involves re-assessing their essential services to ensure they are designed for everyone everywhere and every time and then introducing innovative approaches to deliver their services. “For example if we can harness the power of the bulging youth population in the region and make use of digital solutions, we can put in place innovative systems to deliver UHC for the people of Africa,’’ she said. Moeti said that in addition to ing the re-alignment, the organisation would help build the evidence base around what works and what does not work for countries in the region towards developing and achieving UHC. She said that UHC was not a one-size fits all approach, adding that each country’s path was unique and different. The regional director said that the organisation has therefore developed a framework of actions to assist countries in selecting options that would best suit their context. “We know that progress towards health-related and broader development goals can only be possible by providing access to essential quality care and protection from financial hardship to everyone, everywhere. “Globally, WHO is attempting to get one billion more people to benefit from quality health services and financial protection by 2023. “We need to do this, if we want to reach Sustainable Development Goal (SDG) target 3.8 on achieving universal health coverage by 2030. “Health system strengthening for UHC is one of the key instruments for the change offered by the 2030 agenda. “This entails integration of good stewardship, adequate financing, qualified and motivated health workforce, access to quality medicines and health products, functional health information system and people-centered service delivery systems.’’ She said that the 2018 WHO flagship publication on the state of health in the region identified low funding for health, low availability of services and under-investment in the health workforce as hindrance towards achieving UHC and other related SDG targets. The theme for 2019 commemoration of world health day is “Universal Health Coverage’’ http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/04/08/implementation-of-universal-health-coverage-is-the-only-way-to-achieve-health-security-in-africa-who-says/

President Muhammadu Buhari has directed that the State House Medical Centre (SHMC) revert to a Clinic to serve the original purpose for which it was established. Permanent Secretary, State House, Mr Jalal Arabi, announced this on Monday in Abuja when he appeared before the Senate Committee on Federal Character and Inter-Governmental Affairs for the 2019 budget defence. According to a statement issued by Attah Esa, Deputy Director (Information), State House, the disclosure was made during the 2019 Budget Defence at the National Assembly. The Permanent Secretary disclosed that ‘‘without prejudice to what is currently obtainable at SHMC, the intention to revert to a clinic is a Presidential directive. This is to make sure that the facility is functional and serves the purpose for which it was established, ab initio.’’ Later, Arabi explained to journalists after the budget defence that the reversion of the Centre to a Clinic was a case of ‘‘cutting one’s coat according to one’s cloth.’’ ‘‘It was initially meant to serve the first and second families and those working within and around the Villa. ‘‘The overstretching of facilities at the Medical Centre by patients is some of the challenges the Centre have been going through. It wasn’t meant for that purpose. ‘‘Nobody was charging anyone for any services and relying on appropriation means we will depend on subvention when it comes to run the Centre. ‘‘Whatever comes is what you utilise and if the last patient comes in to take the last drugs based on the last budgetary release, that is it and we have to wait till another release is done. ‘‘But this new development means that services will be streamlined to a clinic that will serve those that it was meant to serve when it was conceived,’’ the Permanent Secretary said. The Centre was a focal point during the 2-hour presentation and budget defence by the Permanent Secretary before the Senate Committee. Arabi explained that the Centre had a total budget of N1.03 billion in the 2018 appropriation, with N698 million as capital expenditure and N331.7 million as overhead cost. he went on to say that the total overhead expenditure released for the Centre from January-December 2018 is N331.7 million, representing 99.9 per cent while the capital releases on projects is N231.9 million, representing 33.2 per cent. In his remarks, the Chairman of the Committee, Sen. Danjuma La’ah (PDP-Kaduna South) welcomed the proposal to make the SHMC fully functional and ensure that of the first and second families use the facilities at the clinic. Senator La’ah assured that committee will full funding for the Clinic and commended the 2018 budget performance in State House, compared to previous years, despite revenue challenges. ‘‘Considering the strategic importance of State House they are not supposed to lack funds and we will keep encouraging them to utilise releases effectively,’’ he said. The State House 2019 budget proposal of N14.3 billion is slightly lower than the 2018 Appropriation of 15.47 billion by 7.1 per cent. Nigerian actress, Toyosi Opeyemi has answered the question of whether or not she can act n*ked for the right fee. Toyosi Opeyemi Ibadan-based actress and star of Odale Ore, Ogboju Ode and Oba Kan among others, Toyosi Opeyemi, has expressed her greatest fear and shared her iration for Nollywood hunks, Odunlade Adekola and Ibrahim Chatta. In this chat, she also reveals why she has decided not to relocate to Lagos like other Ibadan-based actors are fond of doing. Toyosi, who has logged over 15 years in the motion picture industry, speaks on her new production, Three Souls and lots more. Enjoy it. Where did you train as an actor. Did you serve tutelage under any theater group? Yes, I did. I first trained under Alade Aromire of blessed memory. Later, I ed Yomi Duro Ladipo before ing Odebunmi Sulaimon in 2013. Who are those you look up to in the movie industry? I have so many fantastic role interpreters that I respect and appreciate their crafts. But I must confess, Toyin Aimaku and Ibrahim Chatta are number one for me. They are just awesome! Lagos is the main market for the Yoruba movies and most if not all your colleagues in Ibadan have either relocated or about relocating there. Why have you decided to stay back in Ibadan? Hmmm… maybe, you are right. The truth is that about 70 per cent of actors and actresses began their careers here in Ibadan before moving to Lagos. Ibadan is a great city and I am enjoying my stay here (laughter). Could you act nude for $5 million? Wow! $5 million… that is a lot of money o! But I can never act nude for that amount of money? The answer is a no, no. I wouldn’t do it even for a billion dollars. I love what I do and I have a reputation as an African woman and I wouldn’t trade it for anything in this world. Is your family in of your career? Hmmm… It wasn’t easy. At the initial stage, there was a lot of resistance but I stuck to my guns. Now they are in ; they have thrown their full weights behind me (laughter). What inspired the title of your latest movie, Three Souls and how were you able to fund the production? Don’t let me leak the secret on this platform but I can assure you that it is one hell of a blockbuster! And guess what, you are going to enjoy it. It is a very interesting movie. I am sure movie buffs will stay glued to their screens while watching it. Raising money for the movie was tough but the money was from the other businesses I am doing as well as from family and friends. You know, I run a fashion outfit. What would you say is your greatest fear as an actress? I think that should be losing relevance in a dynamic industry like Nollywood. What do you think government can do to take Nollywood to the next level? There is a lot government can do but let them start by helping us fight piracy and reducing it to the barest minimum. Do you have any male crush in the industry? (Giggles) I am seriously crushing on guess who, Odunlade Adekola. And then, there is also Ibrahim Chatta. They both are doing well and that makes me love them so much. Could you share your best moment as an actor with us? It is anytime I am able to deliver my lines very well and watch myself on the screen killing my role; those moments are very special to me. What other projects should we expect after Three Souls? I have one in the pipeline and it’s going to be dynamite! It is a mix of tragedy, comedy and crime. It is coming out soon but the title is still not fixed. What do you have to tell your fans? Without God and you my fans, I am nothing. Thanks for the love and constant . Please, keep watching and encouraging my works, and I promise not to disappoint you. http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/03/31/can-nigerian-actress-toyosi-opeyemi-act-nked-for-1-billion-find-out-what-she-has-to-say/

Davidson Iriekpen writes that at the heart of the crisis rocking the Rivers State chapter of All Progressives Congress is the famous legal precedence that when a case is pending before a court, parties are to stay action until the issues are resolved The crisis in the Rivers State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) worsened recently when a Federal High Court in Port Harcourt restrained the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from recognising all its candidates for the general elections. The court also ordered the commission to remove the names of all the party candidates from the ballot and other electoral materials. It declared illegal, null and void the direct and indirect primaries conducted by factions of the APC in the state The court took the decisions in its judgments in two separate matters brought before it. In the suit brought before the court by Senator Magnus Abe and 48 others against Rivers APC, the presiding judge, Justice Kolawole Omotosho, declared that both the indirect and direct primaries conducted by factions of the APC were illegal as both took place during the pendency of the matter before the state high court. He said the APC must bear the consequences of its disobedience of the law. According to the court, the APC conducted the indirect primaries in gross disrespect of the pending suit before Justice Chinwendu Nwogu of the Rivers State High Court. It noted that the judgment of Justice Nwogu nullifying the primaries of the APC in Rivers State was yet to be set aside by an appellate court, hence it remains valid. The court, therefore, held that the names sent by the faction of the APC controlled by the Minister of Transportation, Mr. Rotimi Amaechi and the National Working Committee (NWC) of the APC to INEC for the general elections were illegal and should be disregarded. It also said the direct primaries conducted by the Senator Magnus Abe faction were illegal because the NWC of APC did not monitor or participate in the processes. Justice Omotosho added that Justice Nwogu was clear when he nullified all primaries and congresses held during the pendency of the suit, which included the direct primaries conducted by the Abe faction. He said both the Abe and the Amaechi factions have no leg to stand in view of the judgment, hence both factions were disqualified from participating in the elections. The court held that the APC in Rivers State had no power to nominate and sponsor any candidates for the general elections. In another suit filed by the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) asking the court to compel INEC to obey the judgment of the Rivers State High Court nullifying all Rivers State APC primaries and congresses, the court granted an injunction stopping all candidates of the APC in Rivers State from parading themselves as candidates for the general elections. He said the Rivers APC would not participate in the governorship, Senate, House of Representatives and House of Assembly elections holding later this year. The judge re-affirmed his directive in the suit between Abe and others versus Rivers APC that INEC cannot recognise any candidate presented by the APC for the general elections. While the two factions of the APC which the judgments were against promised to appeal the verdicts, the state Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which benefited immensely from the verdict has been jubilating. Its Campaign Council said the ruling was a victory for the rule of law and the people of the state. In a statement by its Director of Information and Communications, Emma Okah, the PDP noted that the verdict would douse tension and promote peace in the state as the APC’s past involvement in elections had been characterised by recurring violence, rigging and breakdown of law and order. Okah noted that the local government council elections were peaceful because the APC did not participate. He posited that the judgment has diffused fears in the minds of the voters as the PDP in Rivers State has been under fresh threat of the combined weight of the INEC and security agencies in collaboration with the APC which may be unleashed in the 2019 general elections. Trouble started for the APC when it could not solve the power tussle between Rotimi Amaechi and Abe for the soul of the APC. The senator wanted to run for the governorship of the state on the platform of the party but Amaechi, a former governor of the state and current Minister of Transportation, who controls the recognised party structure in the state refused. As a result, Abe and his faction were excluded during congresses held across the state. Consequent upon this, one Ibrahim Umah and 22 others on behalf of the senator, approached the Rivers State High Court in Port Harcourt with an application urging it to restrain the party from conducting the state congress which produced the current state chairman of the party, Ojukaye Flag-Amachree, who is Amaechi’s ally. The order was granted by the presiding judge of the court, Justice Chinwendu Nwogu. But before the judge could deliver judgment on the case, the Flag-Amachree-led executive apart from appealing the decision at the Court of Appeal, defied the court’s order and proceeded with the primary elections which produced Mt. Tonye Cole as the APC governorship candidate, among others. While the case was pending, the Flag-Amachree faction filed a case before an Abuja High Court, a court of coordinate jurisdiction. Following the APC’s decision to proceed with the primaries in the state, Justice Chiwendu Nwogu, on October 10, 2018 declared null and void, the nomination of Cole as the governorship candidate of the party. He also voided the party’s nominations for Senate, House of Representatives, and House of Assembly for the 2019 elections in the state. He held that Cole’s nomination was a function of illegality and unconstitutional acts. Justice Nwogu noted that the ward congresses of Rivers APC were illegal because they were not conducted in line with the APC guidelines and constitution, saying that all those who purchased nomination forms for the ward congresses were entitled to contest the ward congresses of May 19, 2018, but were unjustly excluded by the party. He said: “The rule by might must be checked by the rule of law. We must restore the hope of the common man in the justice system.” In questionable circumstances, the Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt unturned the restraining order of Justice Nwogu by ordering a stay of execution. This angered Umar and 22 others. They filed an appeal at the Supreme Court, contending that the appellate court engaged in judicial rascality by refusing to abide by Supreme Court decisions on the issue of stay of execution of valid court orders. The appellants told the apex court that the appellate court violated the principle of stare-decisis (judicial precedents) and accorded favourable ruling to the APC, even when it was “in grave disobedience to two orders of the lower court.” But in a ruling that was delivered by Justice Centus Nweze, the Supreme Court faulted the appellate court for halting the execution of a Rivers State High Court order that barred APC from going ahead with its planned congress, pending the determination of a suit that was entered by Umar and the 22 others. It noted that the high court had on the basis of the said suit, issued injunctive reliefs that expressly forbade the APC from conducting congress in the state. According to the Supreme Court, Justice Nwogu gave the interim order of injunction on May 11, the same day that some hoodlums loyal to a faction of the party, besieged the high court premises in Port Harcourt. It observed that despite the attack and the restraining order from the high court, which was further reaffirmed on May 13, the APC which was a respondent in the matter, went ahead and conducted its ward, local government and state congresses on May 19, 20 and 21. The apex court said it was baffled that the APC, “In the most impudent manner,” ran to the Court of Appeal to apply for stay of proceeding and execution of the high court order with respect to the suit marked PHC/78/2018. It further observed that though the appellate court declined to stay proceedings of the high court, it however stayed the execution of the May 11 order by Justice Nwogu. Because of the manhandling of the case by Court of Appeal in Port Harcourt, after the reprimand by the Supreme Court, the President of the Court of Appeal, Justice Zainab Bulkachuwa, set up a special three-man led by Justice Abubakar Yahaya to hear the appeal. Simultaneously on December 12, 2018, both the special of the Court of Appeal and Supreme Court delivered their rulings. In their judgment the three-man of the Court of Appeal compounded the woes of the party when it dismissed three appeals by the Amaechi faction to challenge the judgment of the state High Court. The appeal court also struck out two der applications filed by Flag-Amachree, the governorship candidate of APC, Cole, and other elected candidates of same faction. Justice Yahaya said the appeal against the Justice Chinwendu Nwogu High Court judgment lacked merit, adding that the application for der failed to observe the 14 days rules of appeal. While delivering judgment on the substantive appeal that bordered on Justice Nwogu’s judgment, the ruled that the Flag-Amachree’s faction failed to seek leave of court before appealing against the judgment. It also ruled that the judgment delivered at the lower court was a consent judgment, adding that Flag-Amachree’s faction should have done the needful legally before approaching the court. Two of the appeals are currently pending before the Supreme Court which has fixed March 8 to determine them. But despite the fact that the cases are still pending at the Supreme Court, the National Chairman of party, Adams Oshiomhole, in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, on December 30, defied the judgments and presented Cole with the party’s flag, thereby recognising him as the governorship candidate of the party in Rivers State. This again triggered another round of litigations, especially by the PDP. From the judgments so far in the dispute, it is clear that the APC played into the hands of the judiciary. The party based its reactions on the famous case of Ojukwu vs Lagos State Government where the court made it clear that when a case is pending before any court, parties are to stay action until the issues are resolved or settles out of court. They referred to the verdict of the late renowned jurist, Justice Kayode Eso who held that, “The essence of rule of law is that it should never operate under the rule of force or fear. To use force, seek the court’s equity, is an attempt to infuse timidity into court and operate a sabotage of cherished rule of law. It must never be!” Also referred to was the late Justice Andrews Obaseki verdict where he held that, “In the area where rule of law operates, the rule of self-help by force is abandoned. Nigeria, being one of the countries in the world, even in the third world, which profess loudly to follow the rule of law, gives no room for the rule of self-help by force to operate. Once a dispute has arisen between a person and the government or authority, and the dispute has been brought before the court, thereby invoking the judicial powers of the state, it is the duty of the government to allow the law to take its course.” QUOTE: The APC conducted the indirect primaries in gross disrespect of the pending suit before Justice Chinwendu Nwogu of the Rivers State High Court. It noted that the judgment of Justice Nwogu nullifying the primaries of the APC in Rivers State was yet to be set aside by an appellate court, hence it remains valid. http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/01/15/breaking-rivers-apc-shot-foot/

March 18, 2015 is a supposed-messianic date to as a ray of hope beamed for about 25 million Nigerians (13.9 per cent of the 180 million people) suffering from life debilitating cardiac and renal diseases. It was a day when the former Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babatunde Fashola inaugurated the N5 billion ultra-modern Cardiac and Renal Centre, located beside the General Hospital, Gbagada. Fashola opened the multi-billion Naira facility amid fanfare with an intrepid perception that it was a right step in the right direction and hope to millions of Nigerians suffering from the diseases. However, four years down the lane, a centre with a high hope has suddenly become gold rust and now under lock with a smirk look of extinction. A News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) visit to Gbagada Cardiac and Renal Centre which many have regarded to be one of the best specialist centres in Africa, tells a story of a case of an insidious abandonment. The locked centre could naturally tell a story of an engendered situation where projects that should have directly alleviated the suffering of the masses could be discontinued. One can also imagine the cost of this project in of financial and socio-economic losses which is simply immeasurable to humanity. The Gbagada ultra-modern Cardiac and Renal Centre was built with glamour and the hope of providing specialist care to many Nigerians and also help to stem the rising medical tourism associated with renal and cardiac treatments. The centre was said to be superbly well equipped to global best practices and standards, which boasts of renal facility features with 24 fully equipped dialysis machines. It also has an open heart surgery service which is ed by two anesthetic machines, blood and fluid warmers, a cell saver machine, three intra-aortic balloon pumps in addition to numerous other equipment and facilities. Within the centre are 19 critical care beds (5 ICU beds, 10 Coronary care beds and 4 Recovery room beds), and more importantly, it also claimed to offer a 24-hour service with teams of cardiology and cardiovascular experts. The Chief Executive Officer of the centre, Prof. Babatunde Green, at the opening said the hospital would provide a world class healthcare delivery to Nigerians typical of Europe and the U.S. He said that the centre would provide an echocardiography facility which is a safe and non-invasive diagnostic test that uses frequency sound waves to produce images of the heart and its vessels. “It also provides an electrocardiography, a diagnostic test to detect abnormalities in the heart rhythm. “This will help patients with complex kidney diseases and urologic conditions to find the full range of treatment options at the cardio-renal centre as our operating time is 24 hours,’’ he said. While many narratives have been put up for the non-functioning of the more than N5 billion health facility, it is sore taste to spill that those narratives are beyond redemption. Some said that the centre was fraught with infrastructural defects and lack of working capital by the concessionaire to properly manage the facility. Some of the blame was put on the concessionaire, handling the centre, Renescor Health LLP, a consortium of international health experts with varied experience in cardiac and renal management. A source also said that many of the equipment and infrastructure handed over to the concessionaire by the Lagos State Government were found not to be in perfect condition for use. However, a former worker at the centre, told NAN that excuses for clo the place was underwhelming compared to the place the centre holds in the history of healthcare in Nigeria. “Any excuse given for the closure of that place is not tenable anywhere in the world. How can a monument like that turn to a monumental fraud? “I don’t understand the position of the government about that place; it is something that can be fixed, there is a contractor that supplied those equipment, why not set up a commission of enquiry? “It is like playing with tax-payers money and more importantly dashing the hopes of many Nigerians seeking treatments,’’ he said. According to a report, these large populations are in dire need of cardiac and renal diseases treatment which we easily say it’s a terminal disease. This is coupled with the multiplicity of process and high cost of treatment, the centre is a big relief. But many Nigerians are now left in doubt about the alleged malfunctioning of the equipment and infrastructural defects. It is so because the centre had been used for the treatments the people go abroad to seek. It is on record that the centre was used by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH) to treat some kidney patients after it had carried out its first kidney transplant on in its permanent site at Ikeja. An expert and President of the Nigerian Association of Nephrology (NAN), Dr Ebun Bamgboye, at the commemoration of the 2018 World Kidney Day, lamented the rising cases of kidney diseases in Nigeria. He said that Nigeria was carrying the largest burden of kidney disease in the world, adding that Nigeria recorded 17,000 new cases of kidney failure, while only 2,000 of such cases had access to life saving dialysis. “In Nigeria it is estimated that every year the incidence of kidney disease is 100 per 1,000,000 population. The number of new cases of kidney failure we see every year in the population of 170 million is 17,000. “If you put all the patients on dialysis across the nation together, they are less than 2,000, if 2,000 people are only on dialysis and 17,000 needs it, and when they don’t get it they will die. “You can imagine the number of people dying because they don’t have access to dialysis,’’ he said. Another germane issue on the incidence of renal treatment is the availability of capable facilities to treat the patients coupled with the high cost of treatment which those affected will have to pay through their nose. For renal dialysis in Nigeria, patients will have to pay between N30, 000 and N50,000 per session. Bamigboye also said that the number of Nigerians living with kidney disease is far more than the people with kidney failure. He mentioned that his private hospital, St. Nicholas Hospital, Lagos, records about 120 new patients every year, with an average of 10 new cases every month. “The record has 74 per cent are male, and 26 per cent are female and worldwide, between 10 and 15 per cent of individuals have kidney failure. “Out of the 25 million with kidney failure, about 18, 000 will need dialysis every year (that is about 100 per one million of the population). “Getting this dialysis has become a problem due to the huge cost involved and lack of nephrologists in the country with the cost of dialysis being about N30, 000 per session. “Each patients needs about three sessions per week which is almost N100, 000 per week and about N400,000 per month. Not many Nigerians can afford this and the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) covers just three sessions of the dialysis,’’ he said. Bamigboye also posited that there were few nephrologists in Nigeria as the country only has about 160 nephrologists, which is less than one per one million. “The number of nephrologist in Nigeria is grossly inadequate and unacceptable aside this, dialysis centres are grossly inadequate and found mostly in the urban areas. “We have about 149 dialysis centre in Nigeria (both private and public), with about 600 dialysis machines. For a country the size of Nigeria, this is grossly inadequate,’’ he said. Away from the renal care, heart-related disease is another health burden in Nigeria, and statistics have revealed that about 150,000 Nigerians die annually as a result of it. This is of course alarming with the number expected to increase to 23 million by 2030 if adequate measures are not taken. Also, 34 per cent of the adult population in Nigeria live with high blood pressure, especially cardiovascular heart disease before the age of 50. Reacting to the development, Hakeem Bello, Senior Special Assistant to the Minister of Works, Housing and Power, Mr Babatunde Fashola, noted that the alleged faulty equipment at the Renal and Cardiac Centre was not anything to go by as it was not above the power of the government to fix. “I believe that if the story making the round that some of the equipment at the Gbagada Renal and Cardiac Centre are faulty is true, it is not beyond what the government in power cannot solve. “Those errors if actually true can be corrected because the same Commissioner for Health that supervised the hospital is still in government as commissioner. “When the place was inaugurated, it was a life transmission that everyone can see and there was coverage of the event, all these are on record. “I can say that even if the building is defective it can be corrected if there is the will to do that instead of finding excuses,’’ he said. Meanwhile efforts to reach the Lagos State Government officials to offer their side of the story failed. But if the centre has the capacity to alleviate the sufferings of Nigerians health wise, why should it be left by the Lagos State Government to waste? Government in its wisdom should salvage the hospital from further decay and save the country from capital flight in the guise of medical tourism. No doubt, if the money expended on medical tourism remain in the country, it will boost the economy. More importantly, government at all levels should begin to invest more in healthcare and ensure that the extant facilities in their care are not only adequately maintained but improve upon. The President General of Umbrella organisation of Ndigbo, the Ohananeze, Chief John Nnia Nwodo on Sunday warned the federal Government that they are heating up the polity by the needless action it’s taking against the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN. The President General said that legal opinion did not the action and therefore should not have been contemplated at all. In a statement he signed, Nwodo said Ohaneze has received, with shock and disappointment, the decision of the Federal government of Nigeria, acting through the Code of Conduct Bureau, to prosecute the Chief Justice Of Nigeria. The President General noted that Legal opinion abound that the action is premature and ill conceived following an extant Court Of Appeal decision which interprets the procedure for prosecuting judicial officers. He said: “This procedure has not been followed. The fact that the National Judicial Council has been ignored is not just illegal but suggests deliberate court shopping and a predetermined objective. “Secondly, the fact that one of the issues being canvassed by the CCB before the CCT is for an order of the CCT for the Chief Justice of Nigeria to step aside from his exalted office pending the conclusion of the trial contrary to the procedure for his removal from office as provided by the Nigerian constitution exposes the aim of the prosecution.” Nwodo said that a perusal of some of the depositions in the charge sheet also shows a completely distorted conception of the regulations pertaining to the declaration of assets…”Assets acquired after assumption of office are declared at the end of a public official’s tenure in order to present a comparison with assets declared on assumption of office. “The Federal government is heating up the polity. Not long ago we were entertained with all sorts of interpretations of the Vice President’s powers while the President is on leave. The GMD of the NNPC was accused of violating laws pertaining to the award of contracts. Because he comes from a protected ethnic group and class, no investigation was conducted. “Fulani herdsman killed 110 natives of Nimbo, in Enugu State. Police investigations led to the arrest of some of the herdsmen with their telephone pictures of the carnage but not one has been prosecuted. “The same carnage took place in Benue State. Pictures of the murderers wearing the uniform of the choir of a Catholic church where they murdered their priests and of their congregation were all over the social media. No one was arrested or prosecuted. “Their sponsors, Miyetti Allah, addressed a press conference recently extolling their ethnic agenda and making decisive and inciting statements. Not one of them was arrested. The insensitiveness of the Federal government to respect for our constitution. “It’s patronage of double standards in the enforcement of the law is sickening and abhorrent. If these developments are taken together with the obvious rigging regulations approved by INEC,we fear that our country is about to be thrown into a needless political instability”. http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/01/13/breaking-ohanaeze-blows-hot-buhari-drove-apc-govt-plan-charge-cjn-onnoghen/

The Minister of Information and Culture, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, said on Friday that the massive achievements of the Buhari istration have rattled the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and its presidential candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar. Reacting to the statement from Abubakar’s media office, over the testimony series of the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture to showcase the istration’s achievements, the Minister said the action of the PDP candidate amounts to an acknowledgement of the istration’s impressive achievements. He dismissed as ‘acute paranoia’ the allegation by the former Vice President that the APC-led Federal Government is using state resources for electioneering campaign. Alhaji Mohammed however said, in a statement issued in Ilorin, that it is up to those who made the accusation on the use of state resources for electioneering campaign to prove it, in line with the maxim that he who alleges must prove. “In publicising the activities and achievements of the Federal Government, the Federal Ministry of Information and Culture is only carrying out its statutory role. Long before the elections, the Ministry has used various platforms, including Town Hall Meetings, to showcase the activities and achievements of the istration. “We understand that the PDP and the Atiku Campaign Organisation have been rattled by the achievements as well as the effectiveness of the campaign to showcase them. We are sorry we can’t help them,” Alhaji Mohammed said. He however expressed surprise that the PDP that said the Buhari istration has not achieved anything has now turned around to it that the media is awash with video testimonies from Nigerians on the istration’s achievements. http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/01/12/buhari-istrations-achievements-rattled-atiku-pdp-minister/ 1 Like |

Aisha Wakil, a Nigerian lawyer known to many as Mama Boko Haram, hopes to end the Boko Haram attacks. Speaking to Anadolu Agency, Wakil described her efforts to mediate between Boko Haram and the Nigerian government, saying: "I am trying to convince them to be disarmed and be back to their homes. "I know this is a risky job, but we need to do this for our kids and our country," she said. Born to an ethnic Christian Igbo family, Wakil converted to Islam when she was enrolled in law school at Maiduguri University in Nigeria’s Borno region in 1989. Wakil, who has been working to save youth from Boko Haram since 2009, said, "None of the attacks or any of the activities carried out by Boko Haram are not related to religion as they claim." She said: I sometimes try to convince some of the coming to my house and those who called them to be disarmed. Due to these efforts, I have ensured the release of some of the people held hostage by Boko Haram." Wakil is interested in working with children in need, and claims to know many of the young people ing the group over the years. "When I first came here in 1989, most of the people who ed Boko Haram were kids and I had a very close relationship with them. They used to call me ‘mama' which means 'mother'. They were in my house every weekend, I used to feed and help them," she added. 'Sincerity in negotiations' Wakil said she met with Muhammad Yusuf, the founder and first leader of Boko Haram. "When Boko Haram was first founded, I didn't give much attention. I saw it as a random group. I didn't expect it will grow this militant," she said. Wakil underlined that she still maintains with some of Boko Haram, and claimed things will change if the government shows sincerity in the negotiations. She recalled that there were mediation efforts led by former president Goodluck Jonathan. "At that time, of the Boko Haram wanted immunity and pardon for themselves and their . If the government had fulfilled the demands, these people were ready to be disarmed and come back home." Boko Haram has allegedly split into two factions being led by Abubakar Shekau and Abu Musab al-Barnawi. Wakil calls on the government to make peace with both groups in order to end the terrorist attacks. Wakil participated in many conferences and programs aiming to solve the Boko Haram problem from the root, and a short film has been made documenting her efforts. •Text (excluding headline) courtesy of Anadolu News Agency. http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/01/10/igbo-lawyer-moves-broker-peace-fg-boko-haram/

The Democratic Republic of Congo is set to see its first handover of power in 18 years after opposition candidate Felix Tshisekedi was Thursday named by election officials as the provisional winner of an historic presidential poll. The election’s supervisors had faced mounting pressure at home and abroad to publish the results after repeated delays stoked fears for the giant country’s stability. “Having gained… 38.57 percent of the vote, Felix Tshisekedi is provisionally declared the elected president of the Democratic Republic of Congo,” said Corneille Nangaa, the head of the Independent National Election Commission (CENI). Shouts of joy erupted at the commission’s offices as the results were announced early Thursday morning, AFP journalists reported. The DRC — a vast and poor country burdened by a history of bloodshed — has been in the grip of a two-year crisis over the succession of President Joseph Kabila, who said last year he would finally step down after nearly two decades as leader. The mineral-rich country has never had a peaceful transition of power since it gained independence from Belgium in 1960. The candidate Kabila hand-picked to succeed him, loyalist former interior minister Emmanuel Ramazani Shadary, came third in the poll. The other main opposition candidate, former oil executive Martin Fayulu came second, official results showed. The son of major Congolese political figure Etienne Tshisekedi, the 55-year-old president-elect is the head of country’s longtime main opposition party UDPS. According to the initial timetable set out by the CENI, the definitive results are due on January 15 with the swearing-in of the new president three days later. As the lengthy results were read out on nationwide TV, police were deployed at strategic spots in the capital Kinshasa where, for the second evening running, many residents went home and locked their doors early. – Delays spark suspicions – Kabila, 47, was due to step down two years ago but clung to office, sparking widespread protests that were repressed at the cost of scores of lives. The elections were held on December 30, but CENI last weekend said provisional results, expected on Sunday, would be held up because of logistical problems. The long delay sparked blunt warnings from inside and outside the DRC, but also coincided with an apparent overture to Kabila from opposition leaders. Berates Buhari for not attending burial of five NAF officers Adedayo Akinwale in Abuja and Laleye Dipo in Minna The presidential candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, has lamented that the All Progressives Congress (APC)-led federal government has mismanaged the country’s economy, which has led to the loss of 10 million jobs since it came on board, and urged Nigerians to sack the government in this year’s general election. Atiku has also berated President Muhammadu Buhari for not attending the burial of five Nigerian Air Force (NAF) officers who died in a helicopter crash while prosecuting the war on terror. The former vice president disclosed this in Minna, Niger State during PDP presidential campaign rally, where he said that the APC-led federal government having failed to deliver on its campaign promises to Nigerians must be voted out of office. Atiku said, “In 2015, they came to tell us that PDP did not do anything, and they promised to fight corruption, to improve our economy and also to secure our country. Have they achieved anyone of these three? “When they came in, there was insecurity only in North-east. Today, there is insecurity in North-west and North Central and we have lost more lives than at any other time in the history of this country in peaceful times. They have failed as far as security is concerned. “When it comes to the issue of economy, we have lost more jobs, over 10 million jobs, to the extent that Nigeria has been declared the headquarters of poverty in the world. This is a record. Have they fulfilled that promise? Now, I want to promise you that if you vote PDP, we will restore the jobs that had been lost. You either get a job or get a business to do.” Atiku who made the promise and commitment on behalf of PDP, added that if voted into power, PDP will tackle issues of insecurity, which Buhari has not been able to control. He added, “They have been unable to control insecurity because they have been unable to provide jobs and businesses for the people. So, by the time we provide jobs and businesses for our young men and women, you will hear less crime and less insecurity. So, I want to promise you on behalf of our great party to sack the APC government and let us send them packing. Like I use to say, Buhari must go! APC must go!.” Also, the Director General of PDP campaign and Senate President, Dr. Bukola Saraki, said that after three and half years of APC’s leadership, the government had failed to deliver on its campaign promises. Saraki said, “Our campaign will be based always on issues. Election is about referendum. A government that has been with us for three and half years and promised us three things and we are going to decide as Nigerians if they have performed; if they can continue; and if they have not performed, they must pack and go home. “They promised security, there was problem in the North-east and they said they can provide security solution; today isn’t the security worse? There is no security in North-central, North-west, there is security problem. “Before, they said they will provide three million jobs for the youth, today more than 10 million jobs have been lost. They came they said they would bring food to our people; today Nigeria is the capital of hunger in the entire world, and I ask: have they performed? “They said they will fight corruption, but today there is corruption in the country. Is that not true? They have failed on these things and that is why they must leave and let us bring a man that has experience, that knows how to create jobs, that knows how to bring food to all of us.” Meanwhile, Atiku has berated President Buhari for not attending the burial of five NAF officers who died in a helicopter crash while prosecuting the war on terror and were buried in Abuja. In a statement he personally signed yesterday, Atiku said that Buhari’s refusal to attend the funeral of these heroes on Tuesday was part of a pattern of unpatriotic behaviour demonstrated by the President. According to him, “At a time when the morale of our soldiers should be lifted up as they face the difficult task of defeating the terrorists who are threatening our national security, I find it most regrettable that President Buhari, despite being in Abuja, chose not to attend the funeral of the five Air Force officers who died in a helicopter crash while prosecuting the war on terror.” Atiku said sadly, due to reasons best known to him, Buhari chose not to attend their funeral, neither was he represented by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo nor any federal delegation. “This was despite the fact that the President had time to host Nollywood actors and actresses the previous day. Imagine celebrating just before such a solemn event,” he stressed. The former vice president urged Buhari to learn from even younger leaders, like French President Emmanuel Macron, who on March 28, 2018, attended the funeral of a single French policeman, Lt. Col. Arnaud Beltrame, killed by terrorists in Southern . He said that single event boosted the morale of the French security forces, because it showed a commitment to their wellbeing and honour for their memory by the head of state. Atiku stated, “Last month, I had cause to advise the President to find time to attend the funerals of the hero soldiers of the 157 Taskforce Battalion in Metele, Borno State, who paid the supreme price for Nigeria in large numbers. “The most recent funeral held in Abuja, the President was in Abuja on the day of the funeral. The previous day, he had inaugurated his re-election campaign council. “Very sadly, President Buhari missed another opportunity to demonstrate such commitment to our armed forces. “My question for Mr. President is this: is securing your second term, more important to you than securing Nigeria? “Let me end this by commending our military for their sacrificial efforts to secure all of us. You have my full and solidarity. When we make the solemn vow that the labours of our heroes past shall never be in vain, we mean your colleagues, who paid the ultimate price to secure Nigeria.” http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/01/10/just-loss-10m-jobs-sack-apc-atiku-tells-nigerians/ 9 Likes 3 Shares |

A Federal High Court Abuja has fixed Jan. 21, to hear a suit seeking to disqualify President Muhammadu Buhari from contesting the 2019 general elections. The plaintiffs, Mr Kalu Agu, Labaran Ismail and Hassy El-Kuris, allege that the president lied in his form CF 001 submitted to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), regarding his educational qualifications and certificates. When the matter came up for mention on Wednesday, U.C.Ndubisi, counsel to the plaintiffs, who was holding brief for Mr Okpai Ukiro, informed the court that the matter was for mention. Ndubisi told the court that all the defendants had been served with the processes, and that the president filed an application asking for an extension of time as well as a preliminary objection to the originating summons. He, therefore, prayed the court for some time to enable him respond to the applications. The suit which was filed on behalf of the plaintiff by Ukiro has the president as the first defendant, APC as second defendant and INEC as the third defendant. The plaintiffs want the court to determine “whether having regards to the information in the affidavit contained in Buhari’s INEC form, CF 001 regarding his educational qualification/certificate, he has submitted false information to INEC. “Whether from the facts and exhibits contained in the affidavit in of the originating summons and having regards to Section 31(5)(6) of the Electoral Act 2010 as amended, Buhari is disqualified from running for the office of president in the 2019 general elections. “Whether Buhari, having submitted false information to INEC, the APC can validly present him as its candidate for the office of president in the 2019 general elections.” Upon the determination of the aforementioned questions, the plaintiffs seek a court declaration that the president submitted false information regarding his educational qualification to INEC to contest elections into the office of President of Nigeria in the 2019 general elections. The plaintiffs, in addition, want the court to declare that the president, having submitted false information regarding his educational qualification/certificate, is disqualified from contesting elections into the office of president in the 2019 elections. They also pray the court for an order directing INEC to reject or remove Buhari’s name as the presidential candidate of the APC submitted to INEC for the 2019 general elections. The trial judge, Justice Ahmed Mohammed adjourned the matter until Jan. 21, for hearing of the main suit and the preliminary objection. Mohammed also ordered that hearing notices be served on APC and INEC. (NAN) http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/01/09/3-persons-move-disqualify-buhari-contesting-february-poll/ 1 Like |

Vice Presidential Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Mr. Peter Obi, has assured that education would be accorded the priority it deserves if he and the party’s Presidential Candidate, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, are voted into office on February 16, 2019. Obi, who gave the assurance on Tuesday during a meeting with PDP groups in Anambra state at Onitsha, said it was based on his numerous discussions with Atiku and Atiku’s Action Plan, which gives education a place of pride. Obi frowned at the continued strike in the country’s universities, which he described as an “aberration”. He said that the inability of meeting of minds on the issue was either the sign that the government was not sincere or that government did not understand the import of education to national development. Recalling what he did in Anambra State Obi said: “As the Governor of Anambra State, we accorded education the priority it deserves. When I assumed office, Anambra State was number 26th in national Examination. Because I considered it unacceptable, we set out to work such that progressively, until I left, we became No. 1.” Obi said that his cut across primary, secondary and tertiary educational intuitions. “For Example,” he continued, “we started the development of the Chukwuemeka Odumegwu-Ojukwu University at Igbariam. We fenced it, tarred the complex, and provided over 10 solid buildings. The College of Agriculture at Mgbakwu had one building when I became Governor; by the time I left, I provided them with over 15. Shortly before I left, I provided N5 billion cash to the State University for continued infrastructure development. We also assisted other privately and Federal Government owned institutions of higher learning on the philosophy that they serve Nigerians and not foreigners.” On how he did it in Anambra State, Obi said that it was through massive to the improvement of education infrastructure in the state. He said that his istration provided generators to schools in the state, because of the poor state of power – which he assured the Atiku Government would tackle with the urgency it deserved. He also said that his istration provided two buses to each of the schools in the Sstate, including public and private schools, provided internet connectivity, computers, boreholes, sporting equipment and sick bays to the schools in the state. http://mcebiscoo.com/2019/01/09/will-replicate-anambra-education-revolution-nationally-obi/ 3 Likes |
