Ibraheem El-Zakzaky, leader of the Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN), was expelled from the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, in 1979 after reportedly leading a violent protest against the use of alcohol in the school.

El-Zakzaky, whose first name is also spelt “Ibrahim”, founded IMN as a student at ABU to propagate Shi’ite Islam, which gained a significant mileage in 1979 with the Iranian revolution. Iran became an Islamic republic under Ayatollah Khomeini, who overthrew the country’s monarchy.

TheCable obtained the report of the disciplinary committee which recommended the expulsion of El-Zakzaky and Sani Daura, then president of the Muslim Student Society (MSS), over the incident. Although he made a first-class in economics, he did not graduate officially.

Some MSS had invaded a party organised by ABU students union to protest the sale and consumption of alcohol by those in attendance.

‘HOW ALCOHOL PROVOKED THE ATTACK’

In the report dated November 2, 1979, and signed by S.S. Gbinde, its secretary, the committee said it was believed El-Zakzaky was one of those behind the invasion that occurred on October 20, 1979.

Ango Abdullahi, then-acting vice-chancellor of ABU and chairman of the committee, had told the that MSS had written a “warning letter” to the students union against the planned party.

Daura, then MSS leader, was quoted as telling the committee that the group sent the letter to kick against the planned consumption and sale of alcohol “on the grounds that public places were being used and public money was being used.”

El-Zakzaky preaching in the early 1990s
Asked why the university should “in isolation disapprove of what is commonly allowed outside”, Daura reportedly responded that that was “a matter of ignorance on the part of the general public.”

“On Saturday, the students union disco party was held as scheduled and about 3am, about nine MSS students came in with clubs and other weapons with the intent to cause trouble,” the committee said in one of its minutes.

‘EL-ZAKZAKY’S ROLE IN THE FRACAS’

El-Zakzaky, who was the secretary-general of the MSS in 1977/78 session, was quoted as telling the committee “he was a party to the peaceful demonstration and not the violent one”.

Asked where he was the night the fracas occurred, El-Zakzaky reportedly said he came back from town at about 5pm, left his room at about 9:15pm for the central mosque “for the usual Saturday discussion” (and) was back about 11pm where he met Sheriff Abuna, Abdullahi and Usman.

“He continued that when he was woken up at night, himself, Sheriff, Abdullahi and another person all rushed out. An alarm was rasied and Abdullahi was arrested and taken to the security office. He itted that he followed him to the security office and was back to his room at about 3am,” the report read.

The report added that after his interrogation, Abdullahi, who also served as the committee chairman, said he believed “the attack had originated from Ibrahim’s room as most of the people identified with the incident came from his room.”

“Other of the committee the same views and believed that Ibrahim was one of the brains behind the trouble,” it added.

ETICS2019 POLLS: LETS DO THE POLITICAL ARITHMETIC

Copied from: Habib Bello

The last one month has been turbulent for both the ruling party APC and the opposition PDP.

PDP suffered a humiliating defeat in the Ekiti governorship election losing to APC. With that victory, APC has cornered the whole of the South-west block.
From 2015 till date,PDP has lost 12 states to APC making them the new opposition party in the land.

But in a series of defections which the Benue state Governor started last week, APC lost three states to PDP in a bounce. They are:
Benue, Kwara and sokoto in that order.

With these political re-alignments, let’s examine the chances of these two major political parties in the country in the coming general elections.

First, what is the constitutional requirement for an outright victory in a presidential election?
Apart from winning the highest number of votes, a candidate must also win 25% of the total votes in two-thirds of the 36 States and the FCT to ensure an outright victory. Two-third of 36 states equals to 24 states.

After the current defections, here is how things stand
APC now controls 22 states while PDP controls 13 states with APGA controlling 1 state.
APC has 100% control of the South-West
85% control of the North-East
85% control of North-West
70% control of North-Central
90% control of the Federal Capital Territory controlling 5 out of the 6 area councils(Local Governments)

Let's also not forget that APC won Abuja in the last presidential elections.

Even though PDP controls Gombe state, APC won Gombe in the last general elections.

While PDP controls
95% of south-south
95% of south-east
30% of North-Central
0 % of south-west
25% of north-west
0% of north-east

If APC can retain these 23 states and win majority votes there, all they would need to ensure victory in the general elections is the required 25%of the total votes in two more states they currently don’t control.

APC will be looking at Gombe, Sokoto, Kwara and Taraba States.

On the other hand, PDP would have to make up grounds in 11 states and also win in at least two major political zones(North-West, South west or Southeast and win 50% of at least two other zones to ensure victory.

A win for PDP in the south-south and south -east alone will not be enough.

In of control of geo-political zones, APC has the advantage of controlling zones that have larger ed voters, namely Kano in the North-west and Lagos in the South-west.

That means PDP would have to present a presidential candidate that is more popular than Buhari in Kano and Lagos to have any chance of wrestling those two zones from APC

For instance, the votes in Kano, Lagos, Oyo, Borno and Niger states will erase the total number of votes in the entire south-east and south south.

This means APC only needs to maintain victory in their stronghold of Northwest, South-west and North-east to get 50% votes in the North central where they currently control 70%.

Meanwhile, PDP has a tougher task of re-claiming the North-west, South-west and North-east and then get at least 50% votes in North-central while retaining South-east and South-south

The Three Abba Kyari And The Confusion Of Personalities by abdussalam(m): 1:25am On Aug 28, 2015
Ever since the announcement of Abba Kyari as the new Chief of Staff to the President was made, we've seen some folks of the google age confusing him with other personalities with similar name. Some bloggers aren't helping matters either. They're the main propagators of the confusion.

In case you don't know, there are three different people answering that name in the public space in Nigeria. It's not unusual that such occur especially in Northern Nigeria. I know three different people by the name Yusuf Ali for example. You'll recall the mistaken identity situation that heralded the announcement of the manifest of the ill-fated Dana Air crash in 2012. People had already started paying condolence visits to the residence of the Yusuf, an Ilorin-Born Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN). We also have a Yusuf Ali as an Editor with The Nation Newspaper. Neither of them was on the flight. It's definitely another Yusuf Ali. So, it shouldn't come as a surprise that Kyari's identity is getting people confused.

The Three Abba Kyaris
One is a retired Brigadier in the Nigerian Military
Two is a top ranking serving officer of the Nigerian Police Force in Lagos
Three is a seasoned with over 30years experience in the private sector.

Their Profiles

Brigadier Abba Kyari
Abba Kyari (born 1938) is a retired Nigerian Army Brigadier who served as Governor of the now defunct North-Central State, Nigeria after it was formed from the Northern Region during the military regime of General Yakubu Gowon.

Abba Kyari was born in 1938. He attended Borno Middle School and Barewa College, Zaria. In 1959 he enlisted in the Nigerian Army as an Officer Cadet. He attended the 12th Regular Officers’ Training School, Teshia, Ghana (March 1959 - September 1959) and then the Mons Officer Cadet School, Aldershot, England (October 1959 - March 1960). He held various appointments in the army, including Platoon Commander and then Transport Offices in the 1 Brigade Transport Company, Second-in-Command and then Commander in the Nigerian Army Artillery, commander of 1 Brigade, Kaduna and Commanding Officer 5th Battalion, Nigerian Army, Kano.

During the outbreak of violence against the Igbo people in Northern and Central Nigeria in 1966, Abba Kyari assisted Igbo soldiers in escaping from Kaduna, including Major Samuel Ogbemudia, who later was appointed Governor of Mid-West State in September 1967 following the state's liberation from secessionist Biafran forces. General Yakubu Gowon appointed Colonel Kyari Governor of North-Central State in July 1967. As governor, he commissioned a master plan for the Kaduna metropolis, but in practice the plan was not followed by his successors. He was not tolerant of the free press. For example, in April 1975 he strongly attacked the New Nigerian for publishing a picture of officers attending a conference that mainly showed junior officers. Towards the end of Gowon's istration, Kyari was a cautious advocate of return to civilian rule.

Kyari led the Northern delegates to the 1994 National Constitutional Conference, and was appointed Chairman of the National Defence Committee of the conference. After retiring, he was appointed to the board of directors of First Bank of Nigeria, Standard Alliance Insurance and Merchant Bank of Commerce. He became Chairman of Gamah Flour Mills and of Alif Engineering and Construction.

Ogunyomi Sangogbamila wrote...

WHEN President Buhari dies, he would be honored and eulogized as one of the most selfless Nigerians of his generation.

He would be ed as a war hero who still carries war injury shrapnels in his legs. He would be ed as the Brigade commander who sent Maitasine packing and saved Nigeria from Chadian invaders. People will talk about the former petroleum minister who doesn't have a common petrol station not to talk of an oil block.

WHEN Buhari dies, we would him as the Honorable officer invited by his colleagues to lead a government to reshape Nigeria after politicians took us on the path of ruin 79-83. Buhari will be ed as a tenacious democrat who tried and failed 4 times to be president and stood by the electoral and judicial system.

WHEN he dies, he would be ed as the transformational president in difficult times again when our nation was sliding into economic and political anarchy. A man who lived a spartan, exemplary life unlike many of his peers.

No matter the level or your hatred for him (simply blind hatred from ethnic and religious bigotry) if he should die today, they would not make your father president. They would not give power to your brood of haters. The constitution will enthrone the next in line.

Buhari is 74, a grand old age you need to pray to your God and live well to attain. By the grace of the guardians of our destiny Buhari would not die now but will live to complete the work he started.

But should he even die, only HONOR and GLORY await him. His place in history is certain. WHAT ABOUT YOU you despicable, vile people with your miserable hate filled lives? What awaits you at death? Are you certain of tomorrow?
