Nigeria’s Democracy Has Failed, We Must Explore New Governance Models - Agbakoba (5328 Views)

bodeyX: What did YOUR own senator and representative say about this when you discussed it with them as part of the 5th Amendment to the 1999 Constitution ed two years ago? The 5th Amendment included devolution of power to generate power and distribute it, among other federalism initiatives. What are YOUR own senator and representative doing about returning to regional government in the ongoing 6th constitutional amendment? Do you know what happened to the LGA autonomy that was applauded last year as ebilokan moving us back to regional government, like the return to the colonial era national anthem? 1 Like 2 Shares |

Chibuzoc:So what are you suggesting? A clan-based system like Somalia? Hasn't done them much good. A ruling family like Saudi Arabia? Won't work here. It works there because of their history. I'm not saying Saudi Arabia is wonderful - it's not. But it's a functional hell (unlike Nigeria, which is a dysfunctional hell). 1 Like 1 Share |

budaatum: The Yoruba political system strongly emphasises good government; if the Alafin failed, he was usually executed. Due to the strong Yoruba institutions, the Fulani army couldn't penetrate Yoruba land beyond Illorin. Nigeria can never work. How can you operate a country with Sharia law in the North and Secular law in the South? It can never work, even if they tried. Democracy has enabled insecurity, Sharia law and overwhelming poverty. 2 Likes |

sulaak:How about the recognise the differences? E.g., a federal/confederal system like that Switzerland – in which the regions are very strong? |

tunjijones:I think it's a good idea, but it won't solve our problems overnight. |

anonimi: Regional govt is better than this nonsense we are practicing now. All the burden of governance on on the fg alone, it's too much for one person to handle |
tunjijones(m): 8:32pm On May 20 |
JuanDeDios: Nobody is saying it wld solve all our problems or solve it over night, but we will see a path to progress and the country will gradually advance. Or are you seeing any headway with in this country at the moment. Haven't you notice that each govt gets worse than the previous one. Even the Peter obi that the youths and Igbos are clamoring for wld not have any meaning progress with this form of governance.. |
JuanDeDios: 8:34pm On May 20 |
tunjijones:I can't argue with that. I'm just saying it won't banish corruption or change the attitude of our politicians - our greatest problems. 1 Like |

tunjijones: We have regional governments already with the 36 states and 774 LGAs having clear responsibilities. If ebilokan and APC are clueless about governance they should resign and let PDP return us to prosperity from high employment productivity in a private sector driven economy. Ariwo kọ ní music. Balablu chochocho propaganda is different from proper agenda governance results. thisweekng: 1 Like 2 Shares |

JuanDeDios: Yes I know, but instead of people holding only the fg able, the governors and governor general too wld be able and each region will develop at its own pace. And there will be healthy competition amongst all the regions. There will not be free monies in the center for governors to share again. Each region will generate her wealth and utilize it to better her people. 2 Likes |

Nigeria Democracy didn't fail.. just some unscrupulous elements overusing the power freely given by the people to capture the State.. in order to control everything therein And the more they try to capture, the more they plunge the people into more misery.. That should tell them alot.. but they never listen. |

Winner take it all. so on point. Nigerian President control everything. The Executive, The Legislature: National Assembly, Judiciary, LGA, Media, INEC, Armed forces, DSS, Police, MDA appointments. As such, Undermines the Federal Character principles of equal representation without recourse. There was a country, indeed. 2 Likes |

anonimi: There will be a governor general for each region which the governors wld be reporting to. The governor general will oversee the activities of the regions. Because of the power in the center and because the fg controls all the resources, I think that is what gave Nigerians the mindset that everything has to come from the fg. That the fg has to be held able for everything. Even a bad road in a street, it's still the fg that wld be blamed for that |

I disagree with Agbakoba! There is nothing wrong with Federalism which we seem to be practicing! However, the application of the federalism structure is not fully implemented! Federalism in a nutshell entails states being structured as a nation inside another nation just the same way California or Michigan is structured inside USA! California just like other states in US have their own police, they control their resources, have their own ports, provide their own electricity and generate the IGR which they give a certain percentage to the centre! However, what is practiced in Nigeria is totally different! Policing is central Electricity before now was central Resource control is central Ports are centralized If we must achieve a true federalism structure,we must do so in it's entirety and not patch patch! |

External affairs should be concentrated in the hands of the president with a strong military for regional influence (Africa). Each state/region should develop independently. |

All of you got it all wrong The problem is with these blackmen who are our leaders They are really really sick The level of corruption is so shocking that you begin to wonder if it is our constitution that empowers them to loot. Democracy is not the problem The same thing with religion, it is not the problem. Here they are twisting it to perpetuate all manner of ills Mining they have also used this one to commit all manner of horrific atrocities, same minerals that are mined in some other countries without any noise in peace. |

tunjijones:GBAM! This is the only form of governance that can truly work in a multi-ethnic country like Nigeria. |

Maxymilliano: "Agbakoba noted the absence of a strong opposition in the country, saying many politicians are more interested in grabbing power than in nation-building". For those who say that we should copy China, it's the same power grabbing politicians that will stay and stay in power and not want to leave. I don't think it's the governance system, it's rather the way it's practiced. The same Nigerians that call for change will end up abusing the next adopted system. The federal system will work well for us but many of our governors are lazy and would rather wait for allocation from the FG. |
