*This Is Not for Civil Servants: A Mockery Masquerading as Marketing*

There is a rising phrase in the marketplace of modern Nigeria. It is not born out of wit or wisdom, but from the dark wells of mockery. “This is not for civil servants.” That is the line, now stamped on car ads, promoted in social media skits, and tucked beneath the lips of the self-satisfied elite. It began with an Abuja car dealer who, in his bid to sell exotic cars, decided to insult an entire class of working Nigerians. What he called a catchy line is in fact a sneer, a slap in the face of decency.

Yesterday, I watched a video that pushed the mockery even further. A young man stood before a pen of rams, advertising them for the Eid celebration. The prices he mentioned were obscene, starting at 3.5 million naira. For rams, not elephants. With confidence soaked in arrogance, he smiled at the camera and said, “This is not for civil servants.” And the crowd laughed. People reposted the clip. Some added emojis. No one seemed to pause and ask, “What exactly are we laughing at?”

We are laughing at our nurses. At our teachers. At our clerks and secretaries. We are mocking those who keep government schools open, who record files, who monitor roads, who issue documents, who teach children how to write, read and think. We are laughing at those who have served this nation with decades of loyalty and have almost nothing to show for it. It is not funny. It is cruel. It is psychological torment clothed in humour.

More disturbing than the mockery is the mindset it reveals. It reflects a culture obsessed with wealth at all costs. We now measure human worth by bank balance, not by value, virtue, or contribution. It is the reason prices of basic things are bloated intentionally. It is the reason many now sell products not to meet needs but to manufacture social classes. A ram becomes a symbol of status. A price tag becomes a tool of humiliation.

What message are we sending? That honest work leads to disgrace? That civil service is a punishment? That the only way to earn respect is to become a millionaire, no matter how?

The damage is deep. When the phrase “this is not for civil servants” becomes a national joke, we are saying that labour is laughable, that discipline is a mistake, and that only crookedness deserves comfort. If this continues, a time will come when even the air we breathe will be branded, "Not for civil servants."

We must reject this culture. We must remind ourselves that wealth is not virtue. That ridicule is not wit. That every man who earns honestly deserves honour, not pity. The civil servant may not wear designer suits or drive a foreign car, but his place in the nation’s story is sacred. His sweat oils the engine of the country.

We need to stop laughing and start thinking. Above all, we need to start correcting. If civil servants cannot afford this or that, it means many things are wrong. Hopefully, someday soon, they won’t say, “This babe is not for civil servants. He cannot marry her.”

How much do I thank the writer for the well articulated write up. Our society is fast sinking and those with good motives are not being regarded.

In nigeria, poverty has become a criminal offence .

Once you are poor, you become a crime suspect.

The civil service used to be a honourable job until nigeria/APC happend.

In our today's Nigeria, everybody just want to make money by all means possible.
Even the civil servants are not serving anybody but their pockets.

well-done OP as you've brought it more light.

That's what our society has become. Civil servants had never have it rosy in this country, only that Tinubu worsen their plight.
That's the mindset of the now average Nigerian. It will get to a point that they will start saying it clearly that of you don't have money, you don't deserve to live.
We worship money, mock hardwork, discipline, virtue and other good morals and we are complaining of increased criminality, overpriced goods and services etc.
We can't eat our cakes and still have it.
We either continue like this until we end up consuming ourselves or we retrace our steps and start building a livable society.

This is also the reason our government is like this and we can't do anything as a people because we talked as if we're better than them but in reality we don't trust ourselves not to do worse than them.

It shall be well with us

It is sad.

The real middle class in Nigeria has been eviscerated and replaced with corrupt and criminally minded persons such as mid-level politicians and thier hangers-on, fraudsters, drug dealers, corrupt public workers and other people who get money through illegal means. It is these class of people that apc points to as evidence of a growing economy.

The apc even mocks honest work.

Come 2027, bat must go.

APC and Tinubu destroy the dignity in labour. Encourages criminalities due to the anti-peoples policy and evil agenda.

Our society has sincerely debased to a horrible status and we all are to blame worse of all our religious institutions!

Some weeks ago, someone told us Jesus hate the poor. Some others are busy making them "Pastors". "Knights" and "Elders" all in the bid to share in the crime/corruption infested pockets!

Even a top politician once ridiculed hard work with the political talk "They will labour till they die" and we hailed him!

Today we are encouraging youths to get rich by all means or die trying!!!

@valentino057996, Do not blame this guys, they are only marketing their business. Civil service use to be one of the best job in Nigeria, University graduate always dream of ing the civil service, minimum wage was so good in the 90s that a civil servant can afford 3 bags of rice, compare that with what we have today. Blame politician who destroyed the service, civil servant are not paid well, to collect gratuity wahala, some retired civil servant die without receiving it, let talk about pension, some are owed for month or even years, civil servant are so poor that some basic amenities they can't afford. When this marketers say it not for civil servant, did they lie .

Well can you afford it if you are a civil servant? That's what's more important, not writing epistles in outrage
tk003(m): 12:09pm On May 19
This is what society turns to when merits is replaced by nepotism. It gets to a point where things and figures that of values to societal functioning, uprightness, hardworking and true value are turned into mockery by the same nepotic figures.

We are at that level now.

You missed the point the OP is making
He was referring to how the lingo has now become mainstream that it is even being used in relation to rams
The bottomline is that civil servants are now being painted as synonymous with poverty. Saying "this is not for civil servants" for a wide range of goods and not just cars imply that civil servants are at the lowest rung of society. We know that this is not true. Civil servants are typically middle classs to upper middle class and upper class of society. So when rams are being described as "not for civil servants", what the seller is saying is that a large and critical section of the society are too poor to afford his goods. That's bizarre
