Optometrists and Physiotherapists are doctors in other countries. Why are Nigerian doctors this territorial?
One heals your eyes and the other heals your body, why are they not doctors?

But Pharmacist don't do half of what doctors do
Pharmacist training and education isn't even up to half of the volume of what doctors have to go thru...
.why on earth will they be fighting for same medical doctor title and pay grade ...

Even those with PhD in academics can be saying they wan same pay grade with a consultant oncologist or gynaecologist. its absurd...they don't do the same thing

..sounds like witchcraft to me...

There is something called "healthcare team collaboration", read up on it.

Pharmacists study Biochemistry, Pharmacology, Anatomy, Physiology, so what do you study that we don't study ?

Pharmacists education in Rx school is being expanded to 6 years to incorporate clinical and patient-oriented education and clinical care, hence the introduction of the prefix Dr. followed by (Pharm.D).

In USA, Medical Doctors write their name as Dr. followed by (MD). Pharmacists Dr. followed by (Pharm.D).

That is how it is done because they're both clinical scholars.

What's so special in another person bearing doctor as name?

In other climes, you might meet a doctor and won't even know he is one because he is being addressed by his name even by the nurses. Your first name should always be the priority.

, we the engineers will soon start agitating to be called doctors(doctors of machines and engines) lol.
But jokes aside, the real doctor title owners are the Phd guys, medical doctors borrow or stole the title. Thier real title is physician. With some being GP(general physician)

This is normal in a country where a business becomes minister of health

Another politician’s optometrist pikin don pressure in papa to be addressed as a doctor hence the whole country must share the confusion.

If we fight for the same pay as Doctors, that is because we get a 6 years training as well.

Fight for a higher pay for Doctors should be your concern.

Pharmacists are drug scientists but are now being brought closer to patients.

The NUC directive has already been implemented. Im sure NUC had broad consultation even with the Ministry of Health before implementing it. Nothing can be done anymore. Your lamentations are quite unfortunate and very late.

In USA, Pharmacists are approved by American government to use Dr. prefix.
This is bilshit . The fact is you can't diagnose and manage patient. If like take the Dr title. For your info even in the US where pharmacist are addressed as pharm D it's a first degree course. Medicine is never a first degree course in the US.
Does us Pharmd receive same pay as the mbbs ? The salary gap is wide bro

Na only Naija dem dey raise shoulder.
Raise shoulders like lawyers.
Nigerian Lawyers have this same attitude, meanwhile majority of them are charge and bail and are very poor.

No time to explain things.

Let me make it clear:

Whatever pharmacists read in all their existence on earth is child's play compared to what doctors consume.

I mention pharmacists cos their own don dey too much.

One once challenged me here on a similar issue and went about erroneously asserting that a stethoscope is used to measure blood pressure. I wish I can dig out that page and paste it here.

I'll stop there.

This NARD position is one of the reasons our health sector in Nigeria is in shambles.
Imagine a position of medical practitioner!
It was your choice to be a medical practitioner so, why envying other medical professionals?
The NUC should bring on courses on medical management to design roap and effective execution of quality health sector in Nigeria and deliver Nigerians from the hand of these egoistic doctors in Nigeria

While I acknowledge your perspective, I do share a different view though, every professionals involve in the patient care are important because they collaborate with each other to improve the outcome. well.
See trying to stylishly make it look like everyone's job is equal because they collaborate is downplaying the role of medical doctors....

Some pple sit in office and just dispense drugs they are told ...... While someone combines a whole lot of medical data, to diagnose a sick person, determine what will make them well and many times have cut them open to fix them....cut women open to bring out babies when they can't naturally deliver, replace organs, cut open the brain, etc.. Yet you want to downplay their role because they work with drug dispensers...well done....I acknowledge you too

simple87:

That said, the medical consultant still remain the head of the multidisciplinary team and should endeavour to take input from other professionals including the Pharmacist who is knowledgeable in drugs and drug interactions to improve the outcome, this is the way it is being practiced in the developed world
a medical doctor knows all a pharmacist knows..he's the one prescribing the drugs in the first place....making it sound like pharmacist knows drugs and drug interaction and the possible physiological response than doctors is laughable ....

You can keep sugarcoating the issuing to sound inclusive ...the fact is ....none off the other medical professionals does half of what doctors do.....it's a truck-load of traaaásh to be doing less than someone and be saying you want to get paid the same ....

simple87:

. A Pharmacist spending 6 years would study more courses before graduating thereby having more depth in patient care that ultimately improve outcome which also add to the success story of the team, therefore why should anyone be against this..
you are totally wrong....oga..google is not even far from you..... the course content and training of medical doctors is far broder and than that of pharmacist, physiotherapist etc co....

As in...do you know what it takes to become a consultant after graduating ...u are comparing what's not comparable.....

What are u saying....even doctors earn PhD separately as many of them function as clinical experts and academics....

Earn you doctorate naaaa....but u don't do what medical doctors do yet what to earn their wage becos u got a Dr title behind your name....and u expect them not to get agitated . That's downplaying their role.....

So there is a justification for that, everybody is a healthcare team member.
But the US pharmacist would have spent straight eight years to do it. It's in 9ja people are obsessed with titles. In many countries, dentists are technically Dr, but don't use the title. In 9ja you will see Pharm. Adebayo, Engr. Okonkwo, Arch. Audu, etc.

Right from time, any medical qualification conferred the Dr title. Not so for other health care fields. Govt should focus on training care professionals faster and better. We need loads of them. Not about even longer years and titles.

Australians train Pharmacists in 2 years, if they already have a sound 2.1 BSc in Biochemistry or such chemistry-heavy courses.

I tire my Brother.
Their agitation is baseless.
In the outside world those profession's are regarded as Doctors in their field.
Why the agitation?
Some Nigerians are so narrowly minded and clueless.
If they don't like it, they should resign.

Collaboration?? This is funny..... How does dispensing drugs you are told dispense make your job the same as those who determine if the drug is needed and even have to cut pple open to save them?

6 years.?? Are they the only ones spending many years in school......how does the six years equate to what physicians have to learn and train for to become consultants ...
Google is your friend ....pharmacist course content in their whole years in school doesn't measure up to what doctors learn in 100level to ordinary first MB exam , let alone clinicals (part 4-6).....

Until pharmacist can cut into brain, a heart, the stomach, to fix a person, ....combine a lot a physiological, biochemical, and anatomical ques to determine what's up with a patient, claiming they should get paid the same as professional who clearly do more than them is a comic relief

In as much as I respect Doctors so much.
This particular point is baseless.

For instance no patience confused a PhD Holder with a Medical Doctor.

Even in Engineering where everyone (computer, civil, electrical, mechanical, agricultural, Machantronics, to mention a few) are called Engr.
there was no confusion in the role

Who ever wants the medical Dr title and the salary scale of a doctor should pay the price and do the job......

.so why did they leave nurses, medical lab professionals, and other medical related jobs out of the equation?

Spits!!

Medical doctors are physicians. They aren't the custodians of the title "Doctor".

So, why should physicians be called doctors and physiotherapists not be called doctors?
