This is concerning news. Nigeria is failing to meet its obligation to supply a specified amount of electricity to the Republic of Niger. If Niger proceeds with damming the River Niger, it could result in a complete loss of electricity for us. This situation is reminiscent of the issues Egypt is facing with its neighboring countries. The agreement between Nigeria and Niger concerning the River Niger includes provisions for electricity supply. Nigeria has been supplying electricity to Niger as part of a bilateral agreement aimed at fostering cooperation and preventing the need for Niger to dam the River Niger 1 Like |

The measure has caused the country’s electricity production to fall by 30 to 50 per cent and forced state-owned power company Nigelec to impose planned power cuts that can last several days, especially in Niamey. This was disclosed by Niger’s Energy Minister, Haoua Amadou, in an interview with AFP after complaints by its citizens and an improved adoption of solar energy sources. Recall that Nigeria suspended much of its electricity exports to the West African nation as part of regional sanctions against the junta that toppled civilian President Mohamed Bazoum in July 2023. https://www.alexa.ng/2025/04/federal-government-of-nigeria-cuts.html |

This action may prompt Niger to build dam on the river Niger thereby cutting source of water to Nigeria since the upper course of the river is in Niger republic. Penny-wise, pound-foolish decision

TimeManager:Ignorance!!! There is an MOU agreement between Niger Republic and Nigeria that says that Niger Republic should not dam or block the water in River Niger that flows through their country so that Nigeria would use the water to generate electricity and in turn supply some to Niger Republic. If tis action by Nigeria is true, then Niger republic now has the right to construct a dam over River Niger; and Kainji dam would go dry in weeks. Then Nigerians will realize the foolishness in this act when the time comes |

In other words, you are saying Tinubu the bulaba crooner and buccaneering ballot box grabber is too kind and too nice, he has so much empathy than Mother Teresa. You know, till 2day I had never looked at it that way. Now, I know its because of his kindness and the goodness in his heart that's why he forfeited the 460k as Bobo Chicago. Brendaniel: |

That’s under another govt. Which istration was it? Didn’t Niger have an agreement with and how is that now? Nigeria is not in any fix, agreements are until they are not especially if it was made in bad fate. The eletricity supply should be cut to 2% not 40% and Niger can now build their own dam if there’s any truth to the so called agreement and it’s not a scam. lordm: |
