The driver and conductor of a BRT bus have fled for their lives, abandoning engers to their fate, as a BRT bus caught fire at Maryland, Lagos State, on Saturday morning.smiley
Our correspondent, who was at the scene of the incident, said that the vehicle departed from Ikorodu en route to CMS when the sad incident occurred.

As of the time this report was filed, emergency responders, including officers of the Nigeria Police Force, the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA), fire services, and local security personnel, arrived at the scene to contain the blaze.

Firefighters at the scene.
One of the engers on the bus told our correspondent the fire started as smoke from the driver’s side.

According to her, the engers initially thought the smoke emanated from other buses; however, the slight smoke soon worsened, immediately sending them into panic mode.

“As soon as we saw that the smoke grew bigger, we immediately rushed off the bus before the fire ignited”, she said, adding that none of the engers sustained any injury.

She added that the driver fled the scene immediately after the fire started.

“The driver and the conductor ran away. They didn’t even wait to see what would happen to us.

“Definitely, they knew what happened. They knew the bus was bad before putting it on the road and risking our lives,”
she alleged.

I'm glad they escaped.
Thank God for their lives.
I once had this encounter five years ago, not many people survived in that bus. I think we were only five that managed to escape. I had to break through the windows of the bus, though I injured myself and began to bleed in the process. I lost all my clothes in my travel bag. I'm still psychologically haunted till date.
God thank you for sparing my life till now. I have seen things in this life

Not driver’s and conductor’s fault as they are just employees. Besides, a good advice to anyone in situations like that is the same attached below. grin

All those red BRT buses aren't road worthy anymore. They've been operational since the days of Fashola and ought to be retired by now.

If you've ever heard the cranking sound they make whenever the driver is changing gear you'll wonder why people still enter it.

We don't value lives in this country. Everyone is just out to make money at the cost of human lives.

I miss this area but not wishing to relocate back again ! Not everyone must get rich in Lagos.
Every destiny has where it’s success is tied to. Can’t forget how difficult it was to make a living in Lagos then, since 5yrs I relocated to Ogun state, I have been living like a king in a very peaceful area.
Though! I still miss Lagos for it’s fun life

This is not Brt bus naw. It is one of the rickety red buses that ply Ikorodu road. Also, as it is shown in the pic, the bus is not even on the net lane beside it.

The transportation system in Lagos is insane.
If we talk, they'll say we should not criticize Lagos.

Agberos everywhere, yet, people see nothing wrong with the failed system of transportation. Buses in Lagos are unfit for human beings, but people would rather defend failure and mediocrity.

On VIO, yes those useless lots would never hold those buses.

On the buses being scrapped off the road, na still Nigerians go cry about two things:

1. What alternative was provided for the drivers. Their means of livelihood has been cut short
2. If many buses fall in this category, and there is a short fall in number of available commercial buses and in turn a heavy wait time to get buses or people being stranded for long hours, Nigerians are still the ones to shout that the whole thing was not well thought out.

Then government should be proactive and get new buses with Hire purchase for the owners and scrap out the old buses. It's something they can do and still see their money back but they are all thieves.

Most of this busses are death traps na God dey save us
