The Lagos State Government has slammed the member of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Ushie Uguamaye, for stating that “Lagos is smelling.”

In a chat with our correspondent, the Director, Public Affairs of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources, Kunle Adesina, stated that despite seeing Lagos as smelly, the corps member still goes about enjoying the night life the city has to provide as seen in her TikTok videos.

He said those who hold such view are actually the ones who troop into Lagos in droves to put undue pressure on the infrastructure in the state.

“They can always say whatever they want to say, but what they fail to realise is that it is the same people who come into Lagos in droves, in thousands on a daily basis, that make a mess of all the steps that the state government is always putting in place. Yes, they are the ones.

“When we say there should be no street trading, they are the same ones who carry backpack on their back, who come into Lagos with no family, no kind of lineage, or where to put their head at night and sleep. They are the ones selling at the bus stops or even in the traffic. They are the ones mes the roads with open defecation. They are the ones who engage in it, and at the same time they turn around to accuse the government of not doing what is right.

“They are the same people who make a mess of all the programs and plans to put in place, and when you try to even use the long hands of the law on them, people keep shouting, the government is too draconian. You are applying force.

“You can’t stop them; they will tell you they are citizens of Nigeria which allows free movement, free exit for everybody. There is no law that says ‘Mister, you cannot come from Sokoto or from Anambra State to Lagos.’ You can’t stop them.

“Their influx is part of what has put some of the undue pressures on our social social infrastructure. So me, I won’t be the one to to be propagating all the nonsensical thought she talked about. I’ve seen several pictures of the lady in night clubs and all the rest, enjoying herself in the same Lagos,” he said.

Further speaking, he said despite what such people think about Lagos, global organisations have always rated the state in good light.

On the corps member’s claim that the cost of living in Lagos is too high, Adeshina pointed out that the situation is not peculiar to the state alone.

He said, “If you say things are too expensive, global recession is not only about Lagos. I the last time I had opportunity of traveling. What you normally buy for $1, when we went there, they were selling for five, six, 10 dollars. When I asked the people, they said, well, it’s not only in Nigerian, the issue is global.”

He said the life on the island and places like Lekki is not meant for everyone, just as he urged people to live within their means.

Finally. Lagos fighting back.
This girl did not know that Lagos was smelly when she was eating that 65k dinner at a fancy Lebanese restaurant, beside the smelly Lagos lagoon, she posted on tiktok. Not once did she cover her nose in the video..

She should be redeployed to Sokoto, go to clubbing at night, and be taking her 25k Uber there. Sokoto people will really love to use the vlogging skills she displays on her tiktok . grin

Maybe one day, she will also call her own state government of Cross River to order, abi na only Lagos (the best governed state in Nigeria) that needs to be called out ni. We all know na agenda cheesy

Her state of cross river is also one of the parasites state sucking most from the VAT. Yet she open mouth begin dey criticize Sanwo Olu.

Go after Tinubu, we don't care, but leave our sanwo Olu for us.

Some criticisms, irrespective of the manner they were presented, are meant to be taken in good faith and used as a mechanism for improvement. Not to be unnecessarily defensive and insulting. That Lagos is smelly is nothing anyone can hide and whoever tries to rationalize that is not ready for progress. I the first time I entered Lagos in 2002 for a gospel crusade, the smell that greeted me then at Ojota is something I can never forget. 23 years on and the smell is still very much there. The same 23 years in some other countries and you'll barely be able to recognise the landscape due to high tech infrastructural development!

Yet, Tinubu is a terrible leader. A crate of egg has no business with tending towards 7k! That's a basic metric that shows he has failed.

I used to buy an egg for .10cent like 2 years ago but today it's .15 cent. Should president Tinubu also be blamed for that?

Nice to see Lagos pushing back. They usually let issues like this slide. I wonder why the girl did not call out her own state governor like I saw on her trending video where she left inflation matters and instead went on a rant about how lagos was smelly and filled with potholes, yet her tiktok videos are full of her enjoying night life in lagos and eating at posh restaurants in the same smelly state.

If I were that girl, since Lagos is smelly, and for the sake of my mental health, I would just relocate to another state that smells of Lavender and strawberry. I hope she won't miss the dirty December and the smelly lagoon she posted on her tiktok though grin

Lagos State officials only know tribalism and bigotry as their core job descriptions. Unfortunately, most of them are not from Lagos State nor were they born in Lagos State.

In the US, yes, we blame Trump's current economic policies! In Nigeria, the fact speaks for itself.

You speak in of US dollars (my assumption is apt). We measure your success by your ability to make your citizens access basic protein. Things are worse off under him. I wonder why I'm even engaging you on a simple issue. Abeg free me.

In 1972, Lagos was described as the dirtiest capital city in the world. In 2025, they have used tribalism and division to divert you from the real issues. Mega city indeed. Both residents and governments are to blame.

I hope authorities step up to their responsibility and stop these mindless blame game. This is an inspiring video from Bangladesh where the youth decided to clean up the city. They have corrupt and irresponsible politicians who like to the buck. It starts with you and I, we are all responsible for taking care of our environment.

As at 1999 even, that would have been true. I the days of the molues.

Tinubu came up and changed everything. He created the modern Lagos we have now. However, Onitsha, Owerri and Aba are now the king of dirtiestness.
